First Generation

1. Patrick Clifford, son of Patrick Clifford and Mary, was born in 1799 in Schahies, County Kerry, Ireland, died on February 17, 1865 in Rose Valley, Cooma, NSW1 at age 66, and was buried in Rose Valley Cemetery, NSW.

Notes: Patrick Clifford arrived on the Mariner in May 1827 and was assigned to Alexander Mcleay. He had been sentenced to life for rape. He does not appear to have been included in the 1828 Census, which would suggest that he was working on one of McLeay's many stations. McLeay did have a station on the Monaro plains in 1828 but Clifford was not listed there. Around 1835 when Clifford obtained his ticket of leave he was working in the Yass district for, I suspect, the Dutton brothers who had land at Yass and also (by 1837) a pastoral lease in the northern Monaro. By 1838 this station was called Rosebrook. Over the next two years the Duttons acquired a number of other Monaro stations, including Myalla. Patrick Clifford was their supeintendant in 1839/40. He was probably there as early as 1837 when he married Bridget OHare, whose family, and their partner, John Stanton were then occupying an adjacent run called Nudrum. When the Dutton brothers left the district in 1840/1 Patrick Clifford took over Nudrum and by the mid 1840s had renamed it Rosebrook or sometimes Rose Valley.

Patrick was only married once to Bridget O'Hare. She outlived him. They were, as far as I can discover, childless. Their obituaries do not mention children and BDM Registers are also silent about children.

Patrick Clifford sponsored a number on his relatives to come out as settlers including nephews P J J Clifford and Daniel Clifford. Honora Clifford was probably one of these relatives but I have not been able to discover when she arrived.
