Death of Mrs Thomas Went ... On Wednesday evening of last week, Mrs Thomas Went passed away at her home at Numbugga, aged 83. Deceased was a native of Monaro, and had lived all her life there and in the Bega district, the last 60 years at Numbugga. She had thus been a witness and a participant in the growth of these parts almost since the first white settlement, and she was of the finest type of Australian pioneer womanhood. With her late husband she played a big part in establishing the fine home she has left behind at Numbugga. Until the illness which culminated in death she was a remarkably active and robust woman, and was a regular visitor to town. During her long illness she was devotedly nursed by her daughters and by neighbours, amongst whom Mrs Fouter and Mr John Hukins are deserving of special mention. She leaves a large family, in addition to fifty grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. The sons are Messrs George Robertson (Sydney), William Meaker (Cobargo) and John and James Went of Numbugga, and the daughters Mesdames E McGrath (Lismore), W Went (Tantawanglo), C Haigh (Pambula), W Reidy (Sydney), E Holmes (Numbugga), R Barlow (Byron Bay), R Higgins (Cobargo) and Miss Emma Went of Numbugga. The fine estate which falls to Messrs John and James Went, is a monument to the untiring energy and industry of the deceased and her late husband. She was truly one of the good sort, big hearted and hospitable, a true type of the women who helped to blaze the track in the Australian bush, and so make life much more comfortable and easy for those who follow. Her picturesque personality will be much missed in town, where she was very well known, and in her old home the vacant chair will remind the family of the loving mother who had passed to her eternal reward. The funeral took place to the Church of England cemetary in Bega on Thursday and was largely attended. The remains were encased in a polished cedar coffin, and the arrangements were in the hands of Mr Ryan. Rev Kennedy of Candelo conducted the last sad rites.
