1. Andrew Hartigan Tyrie, son of Thomas Tenant Tyrie and Eliza Hartigan, was born on September 14, 1833 in St Peters, NSW,1 was baptised on October 13, 1833 in Scots Presbyterian Church, Sydney, NSW, died on March 31, 1907 in Urialla, Queanbeyan, NSW2 at age 73, and was buried on April 2, 1907 in St. Thomas' Church of England, Carwoola, NSW. The cause of his death was Chronic Bronchitis.
Notes: Surname spelt Tyrle on death index
In March 1866 the Clark/Connell gang of Bushrangers held up Laurence Harnett's Rosebrook Station, and according to a witness named O'Sullivan, Andrew Tyrie was one of the men who remained outside during the robbery. (The Parker family worked on Rosebrook station at the time, and the fact that Andrew Tyrie had married the Parker's daughter, Ann Sarah Stevens, in 1854, would have made him familiar with the layout of the station.
Soon after Andrew Tyrie was gaoled for cattle stealing. After serving his sentence at Berrima Gaol, he was released and returned to his old haunts to continue cattle stealing. However the Queanbeyan Age newspaper of May 10th.1866 reports that he was yet again arrested and committed for trial at the Cooma Police Court on a charge of stealing a grey horse, the property of John Feagan (Phegan) of the Googongs.
Committal of Andrew Tyrie, For Horse Stealing:
Queanbeyan Age newspaper 6th. November 1866.
The Monaro Mercury reports the committal of Andrew Tyrie, well known character, at the Cooma Police Court, on the charge of stealing a grey horse, the property of JOHN feagan, of the Googongs, near Queanbeyan. Feagan and his son distinctly swore to the horse branded HF near shoulder as being their property; he was lost on the 22nd. or 23rd. of December last; he never strayed nor could be kept away by being in the stable, paddock or hobbled.
Edward Montague Battye, Inspector of Police for the Cooma district, being sworn, deposed:
"On 23rd.March last, about noon, I was near the prisoner's residence, about a quarter of a mile from his place, when I observed a man on foot leading a grey horse, saddled, and also a girl driving another grey horse that had apparantly lately been hard ridden; I approached them, and when within about a couple of hundred yards a man jumped on the saddled horse and made away at a gallop up the side of a mountain close to the prisoner's place. I ordered the police to give chase, and to bring the party down to me to the prisoner's residence. The girl I spoke to I believe was the prisoner's step-daughter; he, the prisoner, was shorlty after brought to me by the police; he was riding the horse now outside the Court, and which has since been claimed by one Feagan, of Googongs, the police then informed me, in the prisoner's presence, that on their approaching him he galloped away from them, and that they had to threaten to shoot him before they caught him. I asked the prisoner why he galloped away; he said "I was out looking for a horse. I had no charge against the prisoner at that time, and told him so. I at once released him. I was not aware the horse he was then riding was a stolen one. When I returned to Cooma I found that the horse the prisoner rode, in every way corresponded with the horse stolen from Feagan. I consequently gave instructions for the seizure of the horse and apprehension of the prisoner."
For the defence, witnesses were called to prove that the horse had been left at Tyrie's place by a man who gave his name as Fletcher, and was a stranger, said to be the man who was shot by the police at the Gulf. Bail allowed, himself in 600 pounds, and two surities in 200 pounds each.
Note. Bushranger William Fletcher was shot by Constable Miles O'Grady during a raid at the Gulf Diggings(Nerrigundah) by the Clark gang on 9th. April 1866 and died of his wounds a few hours prior to Constable O'Grady, who had been shot by Thomas Clark.
An entry in the "New South Wales Directory 1867" by Samson records two sons of Andrew Tyrie as being sheep and cattle owners. But at that time his sons Joseph and William, would have been 4 years old and not yet born, respectively. William was born in 1868. It is apparent that Andrew Tyrie could not record the livestock in his own name, due to his criminal past. It seems from this evidence that Andrew and family and friends unknown were the owners of 33 horses, 135 head of cattle and 1860 sheep.
The entry reads:-
Joseph Tyrie - Tinderry, Captains Flat. Horses 20. Cattle 100. Sheep 1500.
William Tyrie - Tinderry, Michelago. Horses 13. Cattle 35. Sheep 360.
Andrew Tyrie became a very flamboyant and colourful character in the Jingera area, But it all ceased when the Clark brothers were arrested on 27th. April 1867, in the Jingera Ranges. Their trial began 28th. May 1867 before the Chief Justice, Sir Alfred Stephen, and they were found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. On 25th. June 1867, at 9.00am., and witnessed by about 100 people, at the gallows at Darlinghurst Gaol, the Clark brothers were hung. Their deaths closed the chapter on the New South Wales bushrangers, as they were the last. Andrew Tyrie was lucky in that when the Clark Gang was arrested, he was serving time in Cooma Gaol, otherwise he may have been implicated with them in their demise. After their deaths, he settled down to a more stable way of life.
On the 4th. May 1854 Andrew Hartigan Tyrie married Ann Sarah Parker. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Gifford Pryce and was witnessed by Daniel DFriscoll and J. Russell. It was Ann Sarah's 2nd. marriage.
Andrew Hartigan Tyrie died on 31st. March 1907 and was buried by the Reverend H. H. Henderson, Presbyterian Minister, on the 2nd. April 1907 at Carwoola Cemetery NSW.
The following is an extract from Freeman's Journal: Saturday November 1, 1862.
Apprehension of Tyrie
The notorious Jingera Mob is fast becoming broken up, a third of the gang having been apprehended and caged by the police on Monday last. The apprehension is due in this instant to the forsight and vigilance of Mr. Markham, the Superintendant of the police for the Southern District. The particulars as far as we have ascertained and which we doubt not will be found to be correct, are as follows, on Monday 20th inst, Superintendant Markham being on his way to make an official inspection of Braidwood sub division of police, passed Tyrie's Stationat Jinera in company with Constable Cleary one of the attachment of police stationed at Cooma. It has long been known that the vigilance of Braidwood police was generally evaded by Tyrie always having saddled horses in attendance to expedite his flight in the moment of alarm and that he assumed various disguises to escape recognition and Superintendant Markham apparantly entertaining the opinion that Tyrie would show out when the police had passed directed Constable Cleary to return, enjoining him at the same timeto keep off the road and get as near to the hut as he could without attracting attention and if he observed anything suspicious such as saddles on horses in the vicinity to make a rush at the place and if possible effect a siezure. Cleary returning carried out the instructions of his superior officer to the letter and got sufficiently near the hut while unobserved as to lead him to believe that he was upon the right scent. On his nearing the hut a person who was thought to be Tyrie came out of the hut and in a hurry to make a bolt for itattempted to put a bridle on his horse but could not get it properly fixed. Determined, however, to give the trooper a run for it Tyrie clapped spurs to his horse and tried to race off as he was but the animal was not tractable and he could not get under way far enough to double the constable who captured him.
The prisoner was securely handcuffed and taken to Queanbeyan lock up where he will be brought up to answer some of the numerous charges of cattle stealing upon which warrants have been issued for his apprehension.
Braidwood Observer.
Tyrie, Andrew ( from Whiskers Hill Online)
Not properly a bushranger, mentioned here as he was a principal of the later Jingera Mob. The Jingera Mountains and contiguous areas, a wilderness remote from law enforcement, had been the haunt of bushrangers from the earliest times - ' Jingery Jack ' is the first ' leader ' identified; Jacky Jacky ( Westwood ) found a home there - and a close community formed by inter-marriage and cattle raiding parties created a particular problem for the authorities. The Clarke Gang is only the most famous example of the area's capacity to create trouble.
Tyrie was arrested on Antill's Primrose Valley station at Christmas 1859, but must have escaped. He was not caught again until 20th October 1862, when Superintendant Markham, on his way with Constable Cleary of Cooma to make an official inspection of the Braidwood subdivision of police, passed Tyrie's station at Jingera.
(The circumstances surrounding that capture are explained in the previous article from Freeman's Journal.)
Tyrie's notoriety is more owing to the clever manner in which he has evaded the police than to the number or grave nature of the crimes he is alleged to have committed. To our knowledge he was in Queanbeyan some months back, and his pretty looking young wife was sitting on the court - house steps, nursing her baby, when she was interrogated by one of the police as to the whereabouts of her husband, to which she replied - "He's in Queanbeyan right now, and it is more than the whole lot of you can do to take him." And they did not take him, for the wife went home that day, and Tyrie was seen following her the next.
(Sydney Mail, 6th November 1862)
Andrew Tyrie was tried at Queanbeyan police court, November 1862 for cattle stealing. A lot of horse and cattle stealing, all over the colony, then and since, was conducted on behalf of the squuatters.
In Tyrie's case it was found difficult to substantiate most of the charges. He was charged with stealing one bullock, the property of Mr. C. York ( GH 15 Nov 1862 ) at Queanbeyan Quarter Sessions. He was convicted of stealing cattle from John Cosgrove and sentenced to 2 years hard labour in Berrima Gaol. ( GH 29 nov 1862.)
Another reference occurs in 1866: i May he was committed at the Cooma Police Court on a charge of stealing a grey horse, the property of John Feagan of Geegongs near Queanbeyan. (SM 19th May 1866)

John Cleary gave evidence of his arrest. To effect same he threatened to shoot him, and when four feet off, drew his sword on him. The arrest was made at Cowra, near Jingera. When 10 miles on the road to Cowra he escaped at 11pm from his horse. He had cut the strap by which he was tied. He had no knife when leaving Cowra. He ran down the hill and he again secured him. He must have got the knife from Francis Goodwin as he was the only man who was close to him after the search. The arrest was made at Glass's house at Cowra. The Clarke brothers were the most famous of the bushrangers that roamed through the area in the 1860's. Although originating from Jinden for a while they were associated with the local cattle rustlers known as the Jingera Mob.
Newspapers of the 1860's mention the cattle stealing exploits of a number of Jerangle residents. There were a number of landmarks, which remind us of the turbulent past. In the Tinderries is a natural stone stockyard known as the 'beef cask', which was used as a holding yard for the stolen cattle. TYRIE"S HILL is said to refer to the hill on which some of the members of the MOB used to keep watch for the police.
From B & D H S Records:-
"The exploits of Andrew Tyrie, a resident cattle thief, brought the assistant superintendent of police to Captains Flat in 1861. Wild Cattle Flat ( south east of Captains Flat ) was chosen as site for mounted police station. Thieves sold cattle from property owners by day and stole them back the next night. Tyrie eluded authorities for 3 years. He kept two horses saddled in the yard facing opposite directions and the hut had a secret compartment in the rafters. Andrew Tyrie was noted for his disguises. John Cleary caught him in 1862, bound him and draped him over his horse to bring him out of the mountains. He escaped when a friend slipped him a knife but was recaptured by Cleary and spent two years hard labour.
The Goulburn Herald 29th October 1862.
" Capture of noted cattle stealers....
William Bryant, alias "Terrible Billy", is under remand from Cooma Police Court on a charge of Cattle stealing. ANDREW TYRIE, well known as the leader of the Jingera Mob, has been apprehended by Constable Cleary of the Cooma Police, and is remanded to Queanbeyan to answer a similar charge. The warrent against him was issued eighteen months ago. The Constable deserves considerable credit for the capture, which he effected with great nerve, and in addition to this , prevented a determined attempt to escape. The Monaro Mercury says of TYRIE, ' Little can be said. It is barely possible to recognise in the small, weak, macerated individual in custody, the man who gets credit for such a notorious character. He has already, we believe, expressed an inclination to "to come it on" on some of the others"
