DAVID & ANNIE BELL
SPRING FLAT

David Bell married Annie White at Applegarth, Dumfries on the 17th January 1834.

Their first child Jane/Jean was born at Lockerbie, Dumfries on the 29th August 1834.

Their exact year of arrival in NSW is currently unknown, (Shipping Records searched at Kiama Family history Centre) however their second child, Mary, was born on the 19th December 1836 and baptized on the 11th April 1837 at St Andrew’s Church, Sydney.

At this time, David was an Overseer on a property, Shancamore, which was situated at Mulgoa.

When Mary was baptized the family’s abode was shown as Sydney.

By 1838, the family were on the Monaro where David was Superintendant of Gunningrah for John Terry Hughes. Claire Schofield, in her book, Bombala Hub of Southern Monaro, stated that David Bell came free on the Lusitania and was an upholsterer in George Street Sydney in 1828. This is incorrect as in 1828 our David Bell was still in Scotland.

When daughter, Elizabeth was baptised, David was a Settler on the McLaughlin River. The family’s abode as Spring Flat first appears on Robert’s baptism details in 1844. David now calling himself a Grazier.

In 1848, a lease application had been made by David Bell for 10 240 acres on the McLaughlin River.

By 1849, David Bell’s name appeared on a list of 172 squatters whose lands had been surveyed and then published in the Government Gazette. With his total of 10 240 acres it would appear he had made a good choice of grazing land. On the 27th April 1854 David acquired the land know as
Spring Flat.

He made certain his run was secure when he paid 160 pounds for 160 acres around his house on the

9th August 1854 following an application dated 18th April 1854 for the land now legally available to him.

In 1865 Spring Flat Station consisted of 7200 acres; capacity 350 cattle; charges 26 pounds, eight shillings and twopence.

David & Annie remained at Spring Flat where they reared a family of nine children.

Annie Bell died on the 12 July 1873, aged 60 Yrs. She was buried on the property beside her two sons, Robert and David.

Following the death of Annie, David married Elizabeth Fitzpatrick who was much younger than himself. They were married at St Matthia’s Church Bombala on the 12 September 1876. They had one son, Robert Bell.

David Bell died on the on the 8 February 1886. He too was buried on the property.

He left an estate valued at 12 400 pounds. Apart from Spring Flat he had two properties in Bombala.

Land and premises which were occupied by Dr Robert Eddie and a Chemist shop and dwelling occupied by N.E. Earl.

The Bell headstones, which have been transcribed, are on private property belonging to the Garnock family. I believe the paddock in which they are situated is still called the Spring Flat Paddock.

Elizabeth married Edward Taylor at Kameruka. They had a family of six. She died on the 13 March 1938, aged 80 years at Skeleton Creek near Glen Innes and was buried in the Glen Innes Cemetery.

It is worth noting that Annie Bell had a brother and sister who also came to NSW. Her brother, William White, settled in the Wilberforce/Windsor District. His descendants are mostly in Northern NSW.

Sister, Elizabeth, married Robert Jamieson in England and settled in the Bendoc/ Delegate district

where many descendants still remain.

First Generation

1. David Joseph Bell, son of Joseph Bell and Unknown, was born in 1811 in Dumfries, Scotland, died February 28, 1886 in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW1 at age 75, and was buried in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW.

Notes: David Bell, was born in Dumfries but establishing the family to which he belonged has to date not been proven as there were numerous Bell families in the vicinity of Applegarth. On his death certificate his father was named as Joseph Bell but no Joseph has been found who had a son called David within a probable time frame.

The family first settled at Mulgoa where David was employed as an Overseer on a property known as Shancomore. (Source: Mary's baptism certificate.)

From, "Wells Geographical Gazeteer of Australia" Shancomore was situated in the Parish of Bringelly, county of Cumberland NSW at the junction of Bringelly Creek with the Nepean or Cowpasture River.

By 1839 they were on the Monaro. According to Claire Schofield in her book "Bombala, Hub of Southern Monaro," David Bell, in 1839 was Superintendant of "Gunningrah" for John Terry Hughes, a merchant and brewer of Elizabeth Street, Sydney. This was correct as their fourth child was born at "Gunningrah" in 1838. However a correction must be made at this point as Claire stated that David Bell came free on the "Lusitania" and was an upholsterer in George Street, Sydney in 1828 \endash this is incorrect as in 1828 our David Bell was still living in Scotland. "Gunningrah" was 25 square miles of open forest country on granite and whinstone. Hughes did not live on the station which supported nineteen residents. Buildings were six slab huts, one woolshed and one set of stockyards. Sheep numbered 4051, cattle 1244 and horses 25. Twenty acres had been cultivated and sown to wheat." (Ref. Commissioners of Crown Lands Itineraries: Lambie, Monaro1839-45- Archives Office of NSW) . When Elizabeth was baptized David was shown as a Settler on the McLaughlin River, Maneroo. Spring Flat was on the McLaughlan so it appears the family had already moved to the area where David was to eventually apply for a land grant. The family's abode as Spring Flat first appears on Robert's baptism details in 1844. David's occupation, Grazier.

1848 (Agnes' Baptism) he was shown as a Settler, Spring Flat. In "Bombala, Hub of Southern Monaro" David was listed as Licencee and Superintendant of Spring Flat. A lease application had been made by David Bell for 10 240 acres on the McLauchlan River. ( Ref. "Squatting on Crown Lands in NSW" by J.F. Campbell

On the 27 April 1854 David was given the land known as "Spring Flat" in the Maneroo District, County of Wellesley. (Ref. Letter from the Society of Australian Genealogists, Sydney 1975.)

In 1849 David Bell's name appeared on a list of 172 squatters whose lands had been surveyed and then published in the Government Gazette. With his total of 10 240 acres it would appear he made a good choice of grazing land. He made certain his run was secure when he paid 160 pounds for 160 acres around his house on the 9 August 1854 following an application dated 18 April 1854 for the land now legally available to him.

1851 10th March David applied to purchase 160 acres at Spring Flat in the district of Maneroo. He was to pay 160 pounds by 26 April 1854. Ref. Return of Applications to Purchase Portions of Runs of Crown Lands beyond the settled district.

1865 Spring Flat Station 7200 acres, occupant David Bell, capacity 350 cattle; charges 26 pounds, 8 shillings and 2 pence. Ref. Bailliere's NSW Gazeteer and Road Guide Melbourne 1866

David and Annie remained at Spring Flat where they reared a family of nine children.

Annie died on the 12 January 1873 at "Spring Flat" aged 60. She was buried on the property beside two of her sons. When David died in 1886, he too was buried there. This cemetery is now on private property but the headstones were transcribed for me some years ago.

I have sighted a Bible presented to Annie by David in 1859. The inscription read: "Spring Flat 5 July 1859 Presented to Annie Bell by her fondly attached husband David" This Bible was in the possession of Alice Godber of Orbost, daughter of Annie Bell and James Godber. It was my impression that Alice wished to have this Bible buried with her but whether this happened is not known.

Death Details - Annie Bell

Annie died as a result of heart disease, aged 60. No doctor was named as attending her. The informant was David Joseph Bell, her son, of Spring Flat. Burial took place on the 15 July at Spring Flat. The Minister was John Wilson, Presbyterian. Witnesses to her burial were Andrew Agnew McKeachie and Alexander McKeachie. (Source: Death Certificate) Of David and Annie's nine children, the following were baptised outside Maneroo. Mary 11 April 1837 Parish of St Andrew's Church, Sydney by John McGarvie Robert, 3 April 1844 Parish of St Matthew's, County of Cumberland by Wm. Hamilton Margaret 10 April 1850 Parish of Portland Head, County of Cook by Geo. Macfie

Following the death of Annie, David married Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, a woman much younger than himself.

Marriage Details 2nd Marriage:

David and Elizabeth were married on the 12 September 1876 at St Matthia's C.of E. Bombala. David was listed as a Grazier residing at Spring Flat. The only details for Elizabeth were her usual place of residence, Spring Flat and that permission was given by her father, Michael Fitzpatrick, for the marriage to take place. (Elizabeth being under 21) Witnesses were J.H. and Eleanor Morgan.

1878-79 Official Post Office Directory \endash Nimmitybelle Bell, David Farmer Spring Flat They had one son, Robert Bell, who was only five when his father died. Robert was virtually raised by his half-brother David Joseph Bell and family. When David died, Elizabeth married Edward Taylor at Kameruka NSW. They had a family of six. Source: Marriage Certificate & information from the late Sheila Barber)

Death Details \endash Elizabeth Taylor nee Fitzpatrick:

Elizabeth Taylor died on the 13 March 1938, aged 80, at Skeleton Creek near Glen Innes. Cause of death was Malignant Cachexia, Carcinoma of Caecum, Chronic Bronchitis. Her parents were Michael Fitzpatrick, a Labourer and Fanny Barton. She was buried in the C.of E. portion of the Glen Innes Cemetery on the 14 March. Children living: Robert 56 \endash 1st Marriage 2nd Marriage - Martha 51; Amos 47; Mary 44; Henry 42; John C.J. 39; 1 female deceased \endash (Source: Death Certificate)

It would appear that David had been well educated. He wrote with a fine hand as can be witnessed, by his signature, when he signed his will despite his seventy years. He left an estate valued at 12 400 pounds.

His will gives the impression, that he became a very unhappy and bitter man. The wording in the following section, certainly conveys that impression to me.

"…… in the first place to pay my wife, during her life and while she shall continue my widow, twenty pounds per annum, payable quarterly from my death and to pay each of my daughters now living and my grand-daughter Annie Rolls, the daughter of my daughter Agnes, now deceased, the sum of five hundred pounds each…."

Agnes was still alive at this time so it would appear she had been disowned by her father. The other two major beneficiaries were his surviving son, David Joseph Bell and his five year old son, Robert.

Death Details - David Bell:

David, a Grazier, aged 76 died from natural causes at Spring Flat, near Bombala on the 8 February 1866. He was seen by Dr Eddie the day prior to his death. The informant was Thomas Barber, son-in-law of Bombala. Burial took place at Spring Flat on the 10 February. Witnesses to his burial were \endash John McKeachie and David Binnie. The Minister was W. Gardner, Presbyterian. His father, according to his death certificate, was Joseph Bell. (Source: Death Certificate)

We learn, from his will that David Bell had two properties in Bombala. Land and premises which were occupied by Dr Robert Eddie and a Chemist shop and dwelling occupied by N.E. Earl.

From information passed to me by the late Sheila Barber, then President of the Bombala Historical Society, David at the time of his second marriage, gave his father as Robert Bell and his own Christian name as Hugh \endash these facts were not on the transcript of the marriage certificate obtained by me.

The following information was given to me by Alice Godber who in turn was told these facts by her mother, but to date they have not been proven. However, I must hasten to add that Alice had a wonderful memory and was of great assistance to me when I first became interested in family history several years ago. To date I have been able to prove that much of that early information was accurate.

David was a student at Edinburgh College. When they first arrived in NSW they took up country in the Cow Pastures \endash David was an Overseer on their arrival but did not own land in the Cow Pastures. David had convicts working for him and once a year he took a trip to Sydney for supplies. On one trip he took a convict with him and while in Sydney, the convict got drunk. He was given 32 strokes and his back was cut and bleeding. David got a salve and patched him up for the return journey.

David lost several thousand pounds in a bank which collapsed. He had been warned that the bank was on the verge of collapse but chose not to heed the warning.

He was known as a man "whose word was law."

When Annie died he apparently began drinking heavily. He was supposed to have asked for one girl's hand in marriage but her mother stepped in and said, "No. Why Bell, you have two daughters older than her." His second wife, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick was said to have been sold to him for 60 sovereigns.

More about David:

• Occupation: Overseer at " Shancamore ", Mulgoa NSW, Superintendant at Gunningrah, Monaro NSW, Grazier.

David married Annie White January 17, 1834 in Applegarth, Dumfries Scotland, daughter of Robert White and Jane Jardine. Annie was born January 7, 1812 in Applegarth, Dumfries, died July 12, 1873 in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW2 at age 61, and was buried in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW.

Notes: Annie was born at Applegarth, Dumfries, Scotland. She was baptized on the 7th January 1812 at Applegarth, the daughter of Robert White & Jane/Jean Jardine. She married David Bell at Applegarth on the 17th January 1834. Their first child, Jane, was born in 1834 at Lockerbie, Dumfries.

It would appear that they left Scotland for Australia shortly after the birth of this first child as the next child was born here in 1836. Their exact year of arrival has not been found despite searches of shipping records. Steerage passengers were not always listed individually, records often simply saying " 24 steerage passengers on board." A search of Shipping Indexes was carried out at Kiama Family History Research Centre.

Notes: THE BINNIE FAMILY

This information has been supplied by Beverley Moore [bevmoore-at-melbpc.org.au]

In September 1853, John Mudie, was employed as an Overseer on the property "Burrangandra" Maneroo.

At that time "Burrangandra" was leased by Dr James Binnie. Dr Binnie, according to the Government Gazette of 1848, leased the property which consisted of 4 square miles with a frontage on the Numeralia River and carried both sheep and cattle. James did not reside on the property. There were 189 cattle, 2400 sheep and 8 horses on the property.
(Source: Government Gazette: 30 September 1848)

On a map, published in "Discovering Monaro" by W. K. Handcock, "Burrangandra" was shown to be adjoining "Curry Flat."

Further evidence to support this was found on a Parish map of Nimmitabel where a creek named Moodie's Hut Creek was shown running from near the Monaro Highway into Bobundarra Creek. It was quite common in those days to name creeks and landmarks after the shepherds who worked in the vicinity.

Cooma Monaro Historical Society provided the following information regarding the property.

In 1848-49 Donald McPhee lodged a caveat against the lease held by James Binnie. McPhee at this time held a lease on 18 000 acres at Mila. In 1871 McDonald & Campbell had 2560 acres under the name "Burrangandra," on which they were running 3000 sheep. When we were endeavouring to establish the location of the property the locals referred to the McDonald land probably having been "Burrangandra," "The Town & Country Journal" on the 21 June 1890 listed a large number of runs in NSW which would cease to be Pastoral Leases. "Burrangandra" was among these.

WHO WAS DR JAMES BINNIE?

James Binnie was a Doctor whose family came from Crichton near Pathead, Scotland. He spent some years in NSW - the exact date of his arrival is not known but if the information on his son's marriage certificate is accurate then it was c1838. He returned to Scotland, unknown when, where he died, on the 24 January 1870 at Edinburgh.

Pathead is a small town situated near the border of the counties of East Lothian and Midlothian (the county in which Edinburgh is situated.)

Background:

James, was the son of James Binnie (Binney, Binny) and Isabel Chirnside who were married on the 14th October 1780 at Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland. James was christened on the 11 July 1796 at Crichton. Other children known to be born to James and Isabel were: Agnes Binny christened 28 October 1781 Crichton; married David Robertson 6 February 1807 at Cannongate, Edinburgh.

Sophia Binny christened 26 February 1783 Crichton; married Crawford Barclay 29 December 1804 at Crichton.

Christian Binny christened 15 August 1785 Crichton Isabel Binny christened 21 October 1787 Crichton

Elizabeth Binny christened 15 February 1791 Crichton

Margaret Binnie christened 20 October 1793 Crichton ; died 8 September 1854 61Yrs.

William Binnie christened 25 December 1800 Crichton

There were two other sons, Thomas and John who died in infancy.

Marriage Details:

James Binnie married Margaret Hills 17 December 1825, Parish of Crichton, county of Midlothian. There is a second entry regarding this marriage - 19 December 1825 at St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh. (Source:. International Genealogical Index).

This William Robertson was probably the son of Agnes Robertson (James' sister.)

When visiting Scotland in 1986 we drove through Pathead. Whilst looking for a graveyard we came across a sign - "Old Kirk, Crichton" - which led us to the old church and graveyard. Fortunately it was not large and after a short search we came across the Binnie headstone. It was almost impossible to read, however with the assistance of some stone rubbing we were able to clearly decipher the writing.

Eileen Wallace, grand-daughter of Johanna Biilman, remembered her grandmother telling her that the family came out to work on a property that belonged to Johanna'a mother's uncle. Johanna's mother was Elizabeth or Betsy Mudie nee Sime. No link has been found between the families in Scotland at this point in time.

John Mudie, the first of the Mudie family to arrive in NSW was a convict who arrived in 1835 and received his Ticket of Leave in 1840 and Certificate of Freedom in July 1842 - this does indicate he may have been free when he was employed by Dr Binnie.

THE TOWAMBA DISTRICT Pambula Voice November 3 1893

The village of Towamba is situated 18 miles south west and about 30 miles from Pambula either via Eden or Wyndham by road. Eden is the port for the district and a wagon runs regularly between the port and the settlement bringing stores for the people and taking away their produce. Residents of Towamba have one advantage over many of the coast districts. It has regular communication with the market. The harbour of Twofold Bay being accessible in every kind of weather. Some of the dairymen have their own conveyances for running their butter and cheese to market. One of the most important parts of the district is that known as Burragate. It is from eight to ten miles west of Towamba.

Alexander died at Towamba, aged 59, on the 23 August 1883. His death was brought about as a result of Dropsy. Occupation, Farmer and Grazier. Obituary Alice Godber:

" The death of Miss Alice Godber occurred at the Delegate Hospital on Saturday night last. Although she had not enjoyed good health over recent months her death came as a shock to relatives and friends. At the grand age of 93 years, the late Alice Godber was a happy and interesting personality, able to contribute much of interest from earlier times, and blessed with an excellent memory and flair for story telling. She never lacked an audience. Although the Godber family lived for a while in Orbost, Alice later moved to be with her niece, Mrs Percy Reed (Goongerah) who gave her devoted care during her latter years. The late Godbers will be best remembered at their home at Sardine Creek, one of the several boarding houses on the Bonang Highway in the very early twenties.

I had much contact with Alice, Lizzie and Andy particularly when we were living in Orbost in the late 1940's. Many an evening was spent playing cards at their home, except Sunday evenings, they strictly adhered to their belief that Sunday was a day of rest. When travelling the Bonang Highway, it was always a welcome relief to reach their home at Sardine Creek for a break from the constantly winding and usually rough road. They were a family who were very good to my mother and her sister throughout their lives. Alice helped take care of her aunt, Margaret Mudie, (my great grandmother) when she became ill.

In the earlier years, around the turn of the century, the Godber family conducted a Hotel in Delegate. Last remaining member of this Godber family, Alice was buried, near her parents, in the Delegate Cemetery.

Alice was a wonderful help to me when I first began my interest in family history many years back. There has not yet been one piece of information she passed on to me that has been proven to be incorrect.

Notes: Extract From 'Fabric of a Family' by Doug Parbery
Henry Kirkland (1860-1949) Harry was born at North Bega on 6th September, 1860 and grew up in the district learning blacksmithing and farming from his father. As a young man, he went to Sydney where he took a job in the Government Printing Office. In Sydney, he lived at 2 Underwood St, Paddington and he led a wild life. He had an eye for the ladies, was handsome and fun loving. In the late 1870s Alf Parbery procured jobs for Harry Kirkland and his step brothers Bill and Edwin Bishop at the Government Printing Office in Sydney. According to my father, Charles Parbery Snr used to relate a trip about the time of his own wedding in 1880 when he took two horses to Sydney for Alf.
They were brumbies which Charles and Dick Crosby had caught wild out of the bush and broken in.
When the boat arrived at Pyrmont, Charles was met by Harry Kirkland and Bill Bishop. They walked up Sussex Street and on to 506 Jones Street, Ultimo, not long after Alf and Agnes had moved in, leading the horses and carrying Charles' luggage. In 1894 Harry married Mary Jane (Ginny) Cronean (1871-1919) at St Mathias Church of England, Paddington.
Ginny was born on the 18th May 1871 at Albion Park, NSW and at the time she met Harry was working as a domestic servant for a family who lived in Ocean Street, Woollahra. She was a very quiet, loving woman who went out very little, preferring to devote herself to her family. Between 1894
and 1902 they had six children. They remained in Sydney until after Harry's father died in 1904, when he inherited the Ten Acre plus the house at North Bega. In 1918 Ginny developed cancer and died in 1919. Ginny was the fourth of 11 children born to Thomas Cronean a labourer who was born in Parramatta in 1837 and Catherine Raftery, born in Wollongong in 1846.
After he married and settled down, Harry became serious and deeply religious. To the embarrassment of his family he would stop a stranger in the street, button hole them and ask if they had given their heart to the Lord? When he and his family moved to Bega, he became a farmer.
Within a few years he built a more modern house to the east of the old one built by his parents which was then used as a barn. The house was knocked down in January 1990. The Ten Acre was an excellent paddock near Kirby's which never eroded in a flood. In the 1919 flood, however, one
section was partly covered by an enormous pile of sand almost 20' deep in places. As there were no bulldozers or graders to spread it, in which case it could have been ploughed in to the very heavy alluvial soil to some advantage, Harry and his son Tiger, who was then 17 years old, shovelled it into drays and carted it back to the river. It took them months.
As Harry became older, his fierce irrational religiousness made it difficult for family members to maintain a normal relationship with him. His grandfather, John Jaggers had been deeply religious, as had his mother been absorbed with it but not to the point of irrationality. He attended church with my Grandparents, Charles and Mary Parbery who often offered him a ride home in their sociable as they almost passed Harry's door on the way to Yarranung. By the time they had crossed the North Bega
bridge Harry and Charles would be involved in a argument about the sermon or some point of scripture, to the thorough boredom of my father and no doubt the rest of the family, who wanted to get home for dinner. In the church and at the graveside on the day of Mary Parbery's funeral he
loudly pronounce, Hallyloolya, at the end of every prayer and each statement from the minister with which he agreed. It was a very rare day and he agreed with most of it! During the 1940s he often called in at Warragaburra to see Mary and I dreaded his fixing me with a glowering stare and asking me if I were saved? At the age of 5 to 10 or so I wasn't sure from what! He would usually button-hole Walf for an hour or more at a time, drumming his religious ideas into him. One year, he even refused
to plant corn in the Ten Acre because he believed that year would bring the end of the world. He was a rabid pacifist and during the Wars preached that the allies should not fight but turn the other cheek.
It was a wonder someone didn't do him in! In fact one almost did! One day, his neighbour Percy Underhill, recently returned from the war, was tossing hay on his own paddock which adjoined Harry's when Harry went over and began abusing him for his ungodly behaviour of going off to war. Percy
was so enraged that he ran Harry out of the paddock at the end of his pitchfork while saying, "Fancy a man spending four valuable years of his life over there fighting for our freedom to save stupid bastards like you!"
Harry married Margaret (Maggie) Charlotte Barber at Milton in 1924. They had no family and Maggie had a hard life with Harry but remained loyal to him and looked after him until his death in his 90th year. Harry was a very strong man. He celebrated his 80th birthday by driving to Tathra (probably
visiting my Grandmother on the way) parking his car at the beach, walking around to the wharf, diving in, and then swimming straight out into the Bay and back to the Beach. A swim of a kilometre or more.
Five or six years later, when my parents were away, I was staying with his daughter Alma Howard in Little Church Street, Bega and we walked across to North Bega to wish him a happy birthday. Maggie told us he had walked out to the paddock, about two miles, carrying a maul, axe and wedges to split wood. He returned about 4 pm none the worse for it.

Obituary Source: Magnet Newspaper October 4 1930

"The death occurred at his home "Dunblane" Burragate on Monday the 29th September, when Mr David Binnie, J.P. one of the district's most highly respected and esteemed residents, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr Binnie was the eldest of a family of eleven of the late Mr and Mrs Alexander Binnie and was born at Spring Flat, Monaro. He came, with his parents to live at Burragate when he was ten years of age and resided there until the time of his death. In those days, the days of the wild blacks, he early displayed the hereditary spirit of the pioneers, adapting himself to his environment and gaining practical knowledge and experience that materially contributed to his success in later life. As a mere lad he was fearless and adventurous and before the country was opened up by road he used to ride alone from Burragate up what was called the Old Mountain Road but was really an apology for a bridle track, to Spring Flat. He also used to go frequently with his uncle, Mr D.J. Bell, with mobs of horses for sale. He was a great horseman and a keen judge of horses and cattle and was frequently called upon to officiate as judge at various shows in both Victoria and New South Wales. He devoted considerable time and money to the breeding of Jersey cattle and the Dave Binnie breed of Jersey became favourably known far and wide. A man of integrity, hospitable, neighbourly and commanding general respect, Mr David Binnie will be greatly missed in the district of which he was almost a lifelong resident. Forty- nine years ago, he married Miss Eliza Jane Keys, second daughter of the late Mr & Mrs John Keys of Candelo. He is survived by his widow and son Mr D.H. Binnie, Burragate, a daughter Mrs J.T. Mitchell, Pericoe and two grand-children, Gwen and Ella Mitchell."

David married Eliza Jane Keys in 1884 in Bega, NSW.,172 daughter of John Keys and Eliza Cochrane. Eliza was born in 1861 in Wollongong, NSW,173 died May 25, 1936 in Burragate near Eden, NSW174 at age 75, and was buried in May 1936 in Eden, NSW.

Notes: Obituary: Mrs E.J. Binnie Magnet May 30 1936

District wide regret was occasioned by the news that Mrs Eliza Jane Binnie widow of the late Mr David Binnie had, after an illness of considerable duration passed away at her home "Dunblane", burragate on the morning of Monday last. For some time she had been under medical treatment and in the hope of enhancing her chances of recovery, she spent one week in Candelo Private Hospital and five weeks in Bega District Hospital but the malady proved to be beyond remedial skill and she returned home last Saturday and at 2:15 am on Monday, passed peacefully away. Prior to her marriage, she was a Miss Keys, a member of the well known district family of that name. She was married at Candelo to Mr David Binnie in 1887 by the Church of England Minister, Reverend Mr Newth. Children were David Harold and Ethel (Mrs John Mitchell) and grand-children are Gwen and Ella Mitchell, all of whom survive her. Mrs Binnie's husband died at the family home "Dunblane" in 1930. Brothers and sisters of the deceased lady were seven boys and two girls, namely, Margaret Lilly and Mary and boys, William, David, James, Joseph, John, George and Tom. The brothers have passed away but the sisters are living, Mary (Mrs J.T. Collins, Queensland) and Margaret Lilly (Mrs Morton, Sydney.) Mrs binnie's father and mother were both born in Ireland, they were married there and came to Australia ninety odd years ago. At first they stayed at Wollongon,g went to Pambula where most of the family were born and their last home was at Candelo. The father and the mother of the deceased lady came in a sailing boat to Australia and the voyage occupied six months. Mrs Binnie's death has caused a very keenly felt family bereavement and has created a deeply deplored gap in the life of the local community. On account of her neighbourly good qualities, Mrs Binnie was most highly esteemed. Her home "Dunblane" was noted for its hospitality which she and her husband dispensed with open-handed and open-hearted liberality. In the illness of others she was truly wonderful, she spared no effort to alleviate the sufferings of the sick and administer relief. There are few in the locality in which she lived who were not under a debt of gratitude to her for her kindly help to themselves or to relatives in times of need. Her goodness of heart was proverbial. She was well known as a judge in the food section of all District Shows in the Far South Coast and at Orbost and Cann River in Victoria. She was a great supporter of the Bush Nursing Association and took a leading part in the establishment of the Burragate branch and promoting its welfare. Internment took place in the cemetery at Eden on Tuesday morning when the remains were reverently laid to rest beside those of her deceased husband in the presence of a large gathering of town and country residents who had assembled to pay by theira farewell tribute to the memory of one who will be sadly missed by a very large circle of sorrowing relatives and sympathising friends.
