ELLEN AND PAUL BELL FAMILY

Paul Bell was born in 1847 in England. He came to Australia working as a deck hand on a ship from England in 1867 at the age of 20. Liking Australia so much he decided to stay, taking jobs as a drover and working on cattle stations.

Paul later purchased some land in Queensland (1870) In 1879 he married Ellen Hart in Warwick. He farmed his land for 4 years where two children were born John and Reg.

He then sold his land in Queensland and took his family to the north inland of New Zealand in 1883 and bought a dairy farm. He settled in New Zealand for 14 years where nine if his children were born. Hugh, Martha, Nillie, Gertie, Mary, Elisabeth, Dorothy and Ida. Martha passed away at the age of 2 years after contracting a fever.

After being in New Zealand for 14 years he decided to return to Australia, this time he came to Sydney, from there he travelled to Goulburn by train where he purchased a dray and horses, and continued on their journey by road to Nimmitabel.

Here Paul purchased land at Kybeyan calling the property ‘Belmont’. For a few months they lived in tents, while a house was being built, this building is still standing and is in very good order.

Charlie the youngest was born in Cooma, the year they settled at ‘Belmont’

‘Belmont’ was in the Bell family name for 65 years, running sheep and cattle, and growing crops. Paul and Ellen Bell later purchased a house in Rosewell, Sydney, where they retired leaving the family to manage the property. Paul died in 1933 and Ellen in 1939, they are buried at Rookwood cemetery, Sydney.

All the family of Paul and Ellen are deceased, their 3 grandchildren are still living.

First Generation


1. Paul Thomas Bell was born in 1847 in England, died in 1933 in Roseville, NSW at age 86, and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW.1

John married Adarina V Sutton in 1929 in Cooma, NSW.5

   2 M    ii. Reginald William Bell was born in 1881 in Queensland,6 died on February 28, 1948 in Chatswood, NSW7 at age 67, and was buried in Mittagang Cemetery, Cooma, NSW.

   M    iii. Hugh Bell was born in New Zealand.

   F    iv. Martha Bell was born in New Zealand and died in New Zealand. The cause of her death was Fever - 2years old.

   F    v. Nellie Bell was born in New Zealand.

   F    vi. Gertie Bell was born in New Zealand.

   F    vii. Mary A Bell was born in New Zealand and died in 1927 in Chatswood, NSW.8

   F    viii. Elizabeth A Bell was born in New Zealand and died in 1916 in Chatswood, NSW.8

   F    ix. Dorothy Emma Bell was born in New Zealand and died in 1961 in Chatswood, NSW.4

   F    x. Ida Bell was born in New Zealand.

   3 M    xi. Charles Herbert Bell died in 1974 in NSW.9

Second Generation


2. Reginald William Bell (Paul Thomas1) was born in 1881 in Queensland,6 died on February 28, 1948 in Chatswood, NSW7 at age 67, and was buried in Mittagang Cemetery, Cooma, NSW. Another name for Reginald was Rex.

Reginald married Violet Harriet Evans on July 6, 1914 in Nimmitabel, NSW.,10 daughter of John Evans and Harriett Ann Smith. Violet was born in 1891 in Nimmitabel, NSW,11 died on February 12, 1966 in Cooma, NSW at age 75, and was buried in Cooma Cemetery, NSW Methodist section.

The child from this marriage was:

   M    i. Rex Bell .

Rex married Eileen Rolfe.

3. Charles Herbert Bell (Paul Thomas1) died in 1974 in NSW.9 Another name for Charles was Charlie.

Charles married Ethel A S Tozer in 1933 in Cooma, NSW.12

Children from this marriage were:

   F    i. Marie Bell .

Marie married Allan Stokes.

   M    ii. Allan Bell .
