George Garnock
The Rock and Bukalong c1846

GEORGE GARNOCK was the first representative on Manaro of a family well known in Cooma as the proprietors of The Rock Estate, seven miles from the township, and at Bombala as the owners of Bukalong Station. George Garnock, in 1846, became the owner of the Mount Pleasant Run, of 6 500 acres, adjoining Bukalong, which he AFTERWARDS acquired. He had four sons-John, David, William and Charles, the latter of whom acquired from the late Mr. J. A. Sellar in 1901, the grazing property known as "The Rock." Following his death, some years back, "The Rock" has been managed by his son George.

George Garnock born 1796 at Glasgow, Scotland, came to Australia in 1825. He was overseer for Macarthur at Camden. He married Rose Anne Kyle at Mt Piper. Her father was a stockman there. Their soms were Charles, John, George, David and Andrew William. Their daughters were Jane Ann, Mary and Sarah Ann. George Garnock settled at a place called Mt Misery, which he renamed Mt Pleasant. After his death in 1874, his sons formed a partnership and bought more land, including Bukalong, from the Boucher Estate. George and Rose Ann Garnock's descendants still own and live on these properties.

In the BDM records George's surname is spelt Garnack.

George's Headstone - This single headstone is on private property, north east of the Bukalong Homestead, in the Bombala District. George, his son George, and his daughter Mary were all buried under the single headstone mentioned above, the re-interred in the Bombala Cemetery.

Book: Bombala Times - News and Notes page 23 25/2/1916 Mr A W Garnock informs us that 400 men are now working on the Nimmitabel - Bombala Railway, and earth works are fast approaching completion at Bukalong. Three gangs of men will move onto Bukalong run next week. page 32 7/7/1916 Mr A W Garnock has been informed that work on the Bombala Railway Station will be commenced on Monday week. A steam navvy is to be set to work on the hill near the bridge. The works at the Bukalong Station Yards and Platform are fast approaching completion. Plate laying will be started at Nimmitabel next week.

Book: News and Notes Bombala Times 1912-1920 page 50 16/5/1919 The talk of the town during the week has been the magnificent offer made to the committee of the Bombala Hospital by Mr and Mrs A W Garnock, of Bukalong Station. Mr and Mrs Garnock have offered to build and equip a new and up to date ward at the Hospital, to be known as "The Garnock Bukalong Station" ward, and needless to say the offer has been accepted.

15/8/1924 Mr A W Garnock was inspecting the erection of a gate on his property at Lindfiel, when he slipped and fell, breaking his leg near the hip. He will be confined to bed for some time.

Yesterday morning Miss Jane Garnock died at her residence "Stradone", Burton Street, Bombala, aged 71 years. Deceased was a native of the district, having been born at Mount Pleasant, where she lived with her parents and other members of her family for many years, and afterwards at Bukalong where her parents died at an honourable age. When the property was divided up a few years age Miss Garnock and her sister came to Bombala to reside, and have lived happily at "Stradone" ever since. Miss Sara Garnock is the only sister, and Messrs. John and William Garnock the only surviving brothers. The funeral will leave the residence this afternoon at 2.30 for the Church of England Cemetery.

20/3/1914 Reginald Charles David Garnock and Howard Arthur Marks have been admitted to practice as Solicitors in NSW.

BDM Bombala Times 1912 - 1920 page 59 12/9/1919 Captain Reg Garnock, of the Rock, Cooma, is to be married in Sydney on the 17th instant. Miss Garnock, of "Stradone" has gone to the city to be present at the wedding.
