William Bodycott

Newspaper notice of William Bodycott senior clearing sale in 1887.  It would have appeared in the Young Witness. They moved back to Bemboka to live with Robert and Edward.

The death of Mr William Bodycott. 24th April 1907.

The death took place on Wednesday evening, 24th ultimate at Bemboka near Eden of Mr William Bodycott, after a very short illness at the age of 76 years. The deceased and seemed a strong can hearty old Man, and was at the show but lifting to great a weight caused a strain which ultimately caused his death.

Mr Bodycott was the possessor of a genial and happy disposition, and his death is universally regretted.

The deceased was a native of Warwickshire (England), and came to the Young district over 40 years ago, residing at Wombat for upwards of 19 years. The remains were interred in the Anglican portion of Bemboka Cemetery on Friday last. The deceased leaves a widow, ten children, 50 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren -- -- -- many of whom residing in the Young district to mourn their loss.

Obituary.
Mrs Ann Bodycott.

The late Mrs Ann Bodycott who died at Bemboka, last Tuesday night at the great age of 93 years, was born in Warwickshire England and came to Australia in 1855 in the sailing vessel Anna Maria which took nearly six months on the voyage.

Upon arrival in Sydney, Mrs Bodycott went Woolongong where she resided for about 20 years.

From there she moved to Young. After living at Young for 20 years she went to Bemboka where she had resided ever since.

A family of 8 survived -- Mrs Briggs (Temora) Mrs Hopwood (Young) whose son is the editor of the Daily Witness. Mrs Griffin ( Murringo) William (Queensland) James (Young) Joseph (Orange) Robert and Edward (Bemboka) -- three children predeceased Mrs Bodycott -- one son and two daughters.

The remains were interred in the Bemboka Church of England Cemetery on Thursday. The Reverend E. J. Holmes Candelo conducted the service.


The death of Mr Thomas Bodycott. Sunday 3 May 1893 (i)

Deaths. We have to record the death on Sunday last, of Mr Thomas Bodycott, a well-known and respected resident of the town.

The deceased was, until about two years ago, one of the most robust men to be found anywhere.

About this time he suffered from an attack of then prevalent complaint, influenza, eventually resulting in consumption, which at length carried him off a comparatively early age.


Obituary of Mrs Elizabeth Hopwood died 30 January 1925. (iii)

The death occurred at midday today at her son's residence in McLerie Street, of Mrs Elizabeth Hopwood, widow of the late Thomas Hopwood, who died suddenly about seven years ago. The deceased was a very old residence in the Young district and was widely known and respected.

She was born at sea in the sailing ship "Anna Maria" of the Cape of Good Hope in 1857, her parents being bound from England to Australia. She came with her parents Mr and Mrs William Bodycott, to Wombat when 15 years of age, her father having taken up land there.

The journey in those days was very arduous, and was performed on horseback or in a cart.

Her wedding to the late Thomas Hopwood was the first to be celebrated at St Matthew's Wombat. She came Bemboka with her husband to Young where she has resided ever since.

The deceased was well known for her great kindness and charity to the sick and distressed among her friends and acquaintances.

Last Monday she was stricken with an apoplectic seizure, and never regained consciousness. The family and relatives were hastily sent for. She died peacefully today.

Three daughters and two sons survive: Mrs J. A. Grafton, Sydney; Mrs F. R. Finn" Glenrock" Young, Mrs H. F. Webb, Wombat Street Young; Thomas" Balmoral" Young; and Frank Henry, editor of the Young" Daily Witness".

The deceased's mother died only last year aged 94.

The sisters and brothers are Mrs Griffin (Murringo), Mrs Briggs (Crowther), James Bodycott (Young), Joseph (Orange), William (Toowoomba), Robert and Edward (Bemboka).

The funeral leaves her sons are residence in McLerie Street at 2:30 PM tomorrow for St Johns, hence to the cemetery.


The obituary -- Mrs Anne Griffin. -- July 21st 1941 (vi)

A resident of the Murringo ever since her marriage 60 two years ago, Mrs Anne Griffin, relict of the late William Henry Griffin died at midnight on Sunday in the Sacred Heart Hospital to which she was admitted a fortnight ago.

The deceased was a daughter of the late Mister and Mrs a William Bodycott and was born at Shellharbour 81 years ago. She was 19 years of age when she married Mister William Griffin the ceremony being performed at Young. Her husband predeceased her by 19 years.

During her long residence at Murringo the late Mrs Griffin won a reputation for her deeds of charity and hearse services as a bush nurse were in great demand and highly appreciated. Her passing will be mourned by a wide circle of friends.

The late Mrs Griffin leaves five daughters. Her only son, William, predeceased her.

Her daughters are Mesdames T Curtis (Bribbaree) M Parkman Murringo, Roy Sutherland, J. Ryan (Stanmore) M. Cummins (Riverstone).

Messr's William and Robert the Bodycott who reside respectively at Toowoomba and Bemboka are brothers of the deceased, and Mrs Briggs (Young) is a sister.

There are 31 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

The remains were taken to St Mary's Church last night and mass for the repose of the deceased soul was celebrated this morning. The funeral left this afternoon for the catholic portion of the Murringo Cemetery, where the burial took place beside the grave of the deceased late husband. Paterson Brothers made the funeral arrangements.


The obituary of Mr James Bodycott. -- -- -- died 18 Jul 1940 (vii)

After a long illness extending over four years, death claimed a highly respected and a very old resident of Young in the person of Mr James Bodycott who passed away at his residence in Wombat Street at 6-15 am yesterday morning.

In the past 3 1/2 years the deceased had been bedridden and his death was not unexpected.

The late Mr Bodycott was born at Shellharbour 76 years ago, and came to the Young district as a child with his parents who settled at Wombat and lived in the district ever since. In his younger days deceased followed the occupations of miner, shearer and general labourer He was married at Young in 1890 to Ada Emily Hopwood, who survives him together with the family of four sons and three daughters, viz William (A. I. F., Broadmeadow), Thomas (Young), James (A. I. F. Palestine), Raymond (Urunga); and Mrs J. Dooley (Murringo) Miss Ivy Bodycott (Young), and Mrs E Menzies (Ganmain). One daughter Ada, predeceased him in 1914. There are also ten grandchildren.

Mrs E Briggs (Young) and Mrs A Griffin (Murringo) are sisters; while brothers are William (Toowoomba Queensland) and Robert (Bemboka).

The funeral took place this afternoon from St Johns Church and was largely attended, the remains of being laid to rest in the Church of England portion of the cemetery. The reverend A. C. King officiated in both in the Church and at the graveside. Paterson Brothers carried out funeral arrangements
