OBITUARY
LATE MRS. GEORGE BARRETT
When Mrs. G. Barrett passed over the great majority on Monday, Aug. 4th. one of our oldest and most highly respected residents was removed from our midst. The deceased lady attained the great age of 88 years all but a few days. She was born in Gloustershire, England, and came to this state about 1838 or 39,with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Arundell, who at first commenced business in Sydney, but later removed to Liverpool, where they had a hotel for many years. She was sent to a private boarding school and received the best education then obtainable. She was married at Denham Court, near Liverpool, and accompanied her husband the late Mr. Geo. Barrett to Bolairo where his father at that time had very large holdings. The first sight to greet her as a bride to Bolairo, was a big corroboree on the plain just below their home. Life on the outskirts of civilisation in those days, when the railway was undreamed of, and roads were few and blacks plentiful, was not a bed of roses and the deceased lady was noted for her wonderful memory and conversational powers, could recount many interesting stories of her early experiences. She passed through a great sorrow at Bolairo, when her second child was lost in the bush and died of exposure at the age of 2½ years. The first crown land offered for sale at Adaminaby was purchased by the Barretts 47 years ago and is known as Inglewood Station, where Mrs. Barrett resided until 5 years ago since when she lived with her daughter, Mrs. Clugston, at "The Retreat" Adaminaby, where she was close to most of her family and was able to receive all the care and attention it was possible to give her. As evidence of her wonderful constitution it may be mentioned that since passing her 3 score years and 10, she had her leg broken once and the doctors despaired of her recovery; still she recovered so completely that she was able to walk about the house right up to the time of her last illness. She had 3 severe attacks of Bronchitis and was given up by the doctors each time. She also had 3 paralytic strokes previous to the last one which was followed by nearly seven weeks of illness, and was the primary cause of death.
Her kind and generous nature as well as her cheery and intellectual manner of conversing caused all who new her to love her and many were the letters and other tokens of Sympathy received by her sorrowing family since her death. Her husband predeceased her by 8 years. Mr. Thomas Arundell of Sydney is her only surviving brother.
Out of the family of twelve those living are :- Mesdames T.S. Hyles, of Goulburn, G. Mackay, J. Power, A. Watkins, J. Watkins, and T. Eldridge, A. Clugston of Adaminaby, and Mr. Chas. Barrett, of Bega. She leaves 60 grandchildren, 110 great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral which was conducted by Mr. Cass. Clugston, although well attended would undoubtedly have been very much larger only for the amount of sickness prevailing and the short notice given. Rev. H.J. Gedney officiated at the grave side and spoke well of the patient and loving disposition of the deceased and her great influence for good in the community.

TERRIBLE DEATH AT CADDIGAT
An old resident mutilated
On Wednesday, Mr. James Power Sen. Met his death in a terrible manner at Caddigat about 8 miles from Adaminaby. The deceased who lives at Caddigat was driving a waggonette to the Caddigat Creamery, when the horses bolted throwing him off the seat on to the pole of the vehicle. One leg became fixed between the circular piece and the swingle bar, and his body was dragged on the ground for a distance of about quarter of a mile when the horses ran across a log about 2 foot high. One of the deceaseds legs going under the log got fast there and was almost torn out of the socket. The horses kept on their mad career until they came to a standstill, their course being tracked by quantities of blood, and portions of flesh which had been torn off the back and legs of deceased.
A son of Mr. Power witnessed the accident, but was unable to catch the horses or render any assistance. Dr. Cassidy of Adaminaby, was at once sent for, and did what he could for the sufferer; stitching his thigh and closing up the torn portion. It was quickly seen that there was no hope of recovery, the injuries being of so severe a nature. The unfortunate man was conscious almost to the last, and died at about 4 O'ηlock the same afternoon, in terrible agony. His groans, while being dresses, were pitiful to hear.
It appears that Mr. Power left Murrumbucca about a month ago to carry on the business of dairying with Mr. Mat Shanley, of Caddigat, and had just got his dairy in working order, with all crops in for feeding the cattle. He was well known on Monaro, and a highly respected, hard-working resident; and his sad end has caused much regret in the district. He is related to the family of Mr. West; his wife being a daughter of Mr. George Barrett, of Inglewood, near Adaminaby. He leaves a widow and nine children, most of whom are very young. At the time of his death one son accompanied him in the waggonette, and conveyed him home. He was 56 years of age at the time of his death. The funeral takes place at Adaminaby today. Much sympathy is expressed for Mrs. Power and family by the numerous residents of the district.
Occupation: Dairy farmer.

Notes: George Mackay was born in 1837 and was a young man when he left the green hills of his birthplace for the attraction of making his fortune in the gold fields of Australia.
In 1860 after his arrival on the ship Lady McDonald, George set forth to the booming
Kiandra goldfields. He walked, carrying his worldly possessions on his back, from Kiama to Merimbula and on to Kiandra.
As a youth in Ireland George had learned the trade of shoemaking and during the day he delved and dug for the precious metal and at night worked till the small hours making boots for the miners. These were sold for the reasonable price of 20 shillings per pair (around $2.00).
While at Kiandra George was joined by his brother Samuel who had sailed on the ship Peerless.
After a successful time at Kiandra George proceeded to New Zealand and was later joined by Samuel on the goldfields of the West Coast of New Zealand.
George then proceeded to Charters Towers in Queensland, however he contracted it fever and was compelled to return to Kiandra, where he was reunited with his brother Samuel.
The brothers, after several years of fairly successful gold mining, joined in a store keeping business at Adaminaby (known in those days as Seymour). It was at this stage that George acquired the land on which he later built the Federal Hotel.
After a term of business George selected 400acres of the Adaminaby plains on which he built his home `Mountain View' and married Sarah Barrctt, the fourth daughter of George Barrctt of `lnglewood'. Through perseverance, indomitable energy, and despite many setbacks, he gradually increased the size of `Mountain View' to become quite a valuable property.
George continued to selectland and acquired a portion of 'Rosedale' (now 'Bolaro'), which he later exchanged for a similar sized acreage on the Adaminaby plains. Frequently he left his family well before dawn to travel to `Rosedale' (14 miles) to begin work at daybreak.
George was delighted if his wool brought 6 pence per pound. All food for the homestead was bought in bulk, and the clothing made by the girls from large rolls of material.
After many heated discussions with his bank manager concerning the intention to invest in land or build the Federal Hotel George won out and built the grand hotel in the heart of Adaminaby. It was burnt down after only a few years of operation and it was George's intention to rebuilt it but it is believed that his ill health did not allow this to happen.
For many years George was an active member of the community, being a JP, a trustee for the School of Arts, showgrounds, racecourse, Church of England School and church lands. He took an active part promoting the success of these institutions and the district generally.
George died at his homestead on November 17, 1917, in his 80th year. His five sons carried on the grazing tradition at 'Mountain View', which was divided between James with `Homeleigh', George S. with `Wyruna', David with `Brick Villa', Samuel with `Springwood', and Norman with the family home `Mountain View'.
Occupation: Shoemaker, gold miner, storekeeper, grazier.
