The Bega Budget 19 February 1908:

"Mr Jack Barber commenced business this week as a general blacksmith in premises in Auckland Street opposite Whyman and Books coach building establishment. Jack is well known in the district, and is a young and enterprising tradesman, who served his time locally. His shop has all the equipment necessary for turning out first class work and he should speedily establish a business and "weld" his customers to him."

Death Report John E.L. Barber: Bega District News 1946:

"Mr John Barber, who died at his home in Gipp Street Bega, was the youngest son of the late Mr & Mrs Thomas Barber, many years ago well known residents of North Bega. His father was a Carrier on the Tarthra-Bega road. John was apprenticed in the blacksmithing trade, and afterwards carried on business in the line for many years in Auckland Street. Subsequently he was a blacksmith on Kameruka Estate for a while until his health obliged him to give up work. He was recognised as an expert tradesman Years ago he was prominent in horse racing, and bred one or two good ones, one of which Sir Frit, won races in Sydney. He was a man held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He had been ill for a long time and the end came as a happy release. He was twice married, his first wife, who was the youngest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Russell, of Jellat Jellat, dying early in their married life, and subsequently he married the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Underhill, who survives with a grown up family. The funeral service to the Church of England on Monday was attended by many relatives and old friends. Mt Thomas barber, butter factory Manager of Victoria is an elder brother and Mrs Harry Kirkland of Bega and Mrs Wes Brown of Liverpool, sisters."
