1. Mr Henry Septimus1 Badgery, born 1803 in Hawkesbury; died in 1880, son of Mr James Badgery and Miss Elizabeth Lundie. He married (1) in 1827 Miss Margaret Dixon; (2) in 1834 Miss Mary Ann Reilly.

The eldest son, Henry Septimus, was born in 1803, and with his brothers (who married and had no issue) and father, owned properties at Shellharbour, near Wollongong, and were the first to explore Kangaroo Valley. Then, in 1821, they acquired property at Bong Bong. From 1824 or 1825 they formed stations at Nerriga and shortly afterwards at Jillamatong and Araluen in the Braidwood district. Henry, in 1830, sent two of his men to take up Warragaburra in the Bega district. Joseph Bartley and Michael Dunn, as hut keeper, arrived with three hundred heifers at this new station. However, a few days later
Michael Dunn was killed by the blacks.
Henry reared a large family at his Sutton Forest (Bong Bong) property and earned the reputation of an explorer of some note, being the first white man to enter Araluen Valley. He made several attempts and successful ones, to penertrate the interior, where he also established stations. He was a JP for many years but took little interest in politics. He was ever ready to assist movement for the good of the localities in the districts to which he belonged. He died in 1880, aged 78. He was twice married, leaving by his first wife, three sons. By his second wife he left nine sons, and of these, in 1888,
seven were living - John Alexander, Andrew Delfosse, Henry Septimus (Jnr), Frederick Durham, Edward Hamilton, Frank Arthur and Charles Lundie.

The Cathcart connections with the Badgery family come from Henry Badgery, who had McLeay's Flat up until the early 1850's. Henry used his McLeay's Flat Run for fattening his cattle, driven from his other vast holdings, and also his breeding mares, which provided him with the Badgery Family's many famous race horses.
Mr James Thomas2 Badgery, born 1835 in Moss Vale District, NSW; died in Exeter, Moss Vale District, NSW. Notes: BDM Notices Bombala Times 1912-1920 page 31 26/5/1916 Mr J A Badgery, who recently died at Exeter, in the Moss Vale district - where he was born in 1835 was the son of the late Henry Badgery, born on the Haskesbury in 1803, and grandson of the late James Badgery who came to NSW in 1795, bringing a shipload of live stock from England.
Notes for Mr William Badgery
Book: Bygone Days of Cathcart, page 184
McLeay's Flat was in the care of Henry's son William, a son from his first marriage to Margaret Dickson. (Family tree spells Dixon). William (1832-1870) married Margaret Martin in 1853, daughter of James Martin, Archer's Flat. William di not have the love for the land that his father and brothers had, so by mid 1850's McLeay's Flat was sold, and by 1858 William was licensee of the Australian Arms Hotel, Bombala.
William and his wife Margaret rebuilt the modest inn in solid stone and it became the town's meeting place. Well known for excellent cuisine and genial hosts, providing dinners for Masonic Lodge members and Sporting Clubs. Margaret possibly being the brain and brawn behind the venture, as she carried on the business and reared her family there, up until her death.
William followed his grandfather James and father Henry's love of racing and gambling with his two horses Black Prince and Sailor Boy, challenging them publicly against all comers over a two mile course.
The only name of Badgery now on the Monaro is that of Badgery's Swamp, Cathcart.

Henry Septimus Badgery (Jnr) was born at Sutton Forest on 9th December, 1840. He was educated at Goulburn Grammar School and remained there until he was fifteen, under the tuition of Mr David Patterson, a well known and successful school master. He first set out to work on his father's station learning all that relates to stock life, becoming a noted horseman and rough rider. Up until 1864, Henry engaged himself in rural life, the knowledge thus obtained proving of excellent service when he established the well known stock and station agency. He first, in 1864, took out an auctioneer's license
and set up as a salesman of all kinds of stock in his native place, Sutton Forest. He was most successful.
In 1869 he married Miss Julia Pitt, daughter of Mr G M Pitt, a well known stock and station agent of Sydney. Henry went to Maitland in 1840, and there shortly joined the partnership with Mr J E Wolfe in a stock and station agency, subsequently admitting into it, Mr J N Brunker. Mr Badgery took an active interest in the progress of his new centre and was elected as an alderman with a large majority over his opponent. He gave valued assistance to sufferers from inundations at the time of the flood in 1876. Mr Badgery became very popular and on the death of Mr Stephen Scholey, MLA for East Maitland, Mr
Badgery was elected on 5th June, 1878, to the vacancy. On the dissolution in November, 1880, he stood for Monaro, and was elected for that constituency on 2nd December, 1880, and again at the following election on 14th December, 1882. On 7th October, 1885, he was appointed Secretary for Works in the Dibbs Government. Parliament dissolved the same day and Mr Badgery in accordance with a promise made, on this occassion, stood for Camden and was defeated. He was a hard working and conscientious member, ever attentive to his duties in Parliament and the wants of the constituency. His defeat occured on 31st
October, 1885. He became juniour partner in the well known firm of Pitt, Son and Badgery. He took up residence at Summerhill and still maintained his country house at Sutton Forest. He was a JP. He was a father of four sons and two daughters.
