Obituary Mr. Henry Agnew
Following a brief illness the death occurred at Cooma District Hospital early on Tuesday, 7th inst., of Mr. Henry Agnew , of Bombala Street Cooma, at the age of 82 years.
The late Mr. Agnew was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Agnew of Cooma, where he was born and where the greater part of his life was spent.
For very many years he was a shearer travelling and working in many parts of New South Wales as well as Queensland. He could speak most interestingly and with first hand knowledge of the early struggles of the Shearing Union, later merged in the A.W.U. and he was personally acquainted with many of the early Labor Party representatives who came to the front in those industrial and political pioneering days.
Mr. Agnew conducted billiard saloons both in the city and in Cooma, and associated with the latter the business of hair dressing, which he later adopted as his livelihood.
He was well known and popular throughout Monaro and was held in the highest esteem by a very wide circle of friends . A well earned tribute to his knowledge of Monaro and of land matters, as well as of men, was his appointment as a mem ber of the Cooma Local Land Board, a position which he filled with credit to himself and advantage to the community.
He married in Cooma Margaret Adams, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Colquhuon, of "Rosedale", Bolaro, and she survives him, also three sons, Leslie, Guildford, James, Leichardt, and John, Cooma, three daughters Mrs. Hassel l (Margaret), Mrs. P Woodger (Jean), and May, all of Cooma, a sister Elizabeth, North Bondi, 11 grandchildren and six great grand-children. A son, Cecil, a brother and eight sisters predeceased him.
The remains were removed to St. Patrick's R.C. Church Cooma, and following a service there on Wednesday afternoon to Mittagang Cemetery, in the R.C.Section of which they were laid to rest in the presence of a large gathering of mourners . Rev. Fr. J.B. Ryan officiated at both church and graveside services and Messrs. John Hassell (grandson), Ernest Blatt man (grandson in law), Phillip Woodger (son in law) and S.J. Dykes were pall bearers. Mr. F.H. Allen had charge of the funeral arrangements.
