• He served in the military as a Private, number 8354, 4th Field Ambulance, 1st AIF from July 12, 1915 to May 27, 1919 in WW1. Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on 20 December 1915.
• He was awarded the Military Medal. 'This Private showed special courage and coolness near BULLECOURT on the night of 7th May 1917. He was knocked over by a shell, which also wounded a comrade. He remained under heavy shell fire dressed the wounds and conducted the patients to a dressing station and reported back to his post. On the night of 10th May 1917, this private was buried twice during a bombardment, and though suffering from shock and bruises, showed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty by carrying on with his work for 24 hours, till relieved.'
