The Oliver family moved to Rooty Hill during WW1 due to the strong anti-german feelings in country towns (Mrs Oliver being a von Rozynski). They settled in Rooty Hill on a poultry farm.

1948: Bombala Times: "Whilst visiting relatives at Katoomba, Mr Joseph Oliver, died in his sleep on 23rd February, though he had been medical treatment he was getting well and on Saturday he had taken part in a rifle shoot - a sport in which he had long been interested. Mr Oliver who was born at Delegate 83 years ago settled at Rooty Hill in 1914 as a poultry farmer and retired in 1940. Mrs Oliver, a member of the Rozynski family died in 1937. Joseph's remaining sister is Mrs Mary Murdoch of Glenfield. The surviving children are Ronald, Stella (Mrs Markley), Linda (Mrs T Hancock), Joseph, Agnes (Mrs Lee), Enid (Mrs A Sergeant). Mr Oliver was a son of Mr & Mrs William Oliver who were among the pioneers of Presbyterianism in Bombala District and was ordained to the eldership of the St Mary's and Rupertswood charge and later joined the session of Auburn."
