Description: Death of Mr. P. Cullen.

As briefly reported in our last issue (says the Queanbeyan "Age") the death took place on Tuesday, 16th inst., of Mr. P. Cullen, who was in his 70th year.
Until the previous Friday deceased was enjoying his usual good health, but contracted a cold, and pneumonia developed, resulting in his death as stated. The late Mr Cullen was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, coming to Australia some fifty years ago. He has resided with his wife and members of his family in Queanbeyan and district for the last fifty years, during which time his honest and straight forward life made for him a host of friends throughout the district, who mourn his sudden death. He leaves a loving wife and family, the members of which are'97 Mrs Bates (Canberra), Mrs McKenzie (Sydney), Mrs J. Rolfe ("Box Hill," Tangmangaroo), Mrs J. McGrath ("Clear View," Burrowa), Miss M. Cullen (Queanbeyan), and Messrs Jack (Newcastle), Joe (Sydney) and Patrick and Bernard (Queanbeyan). The funeral took place on the afternoon of the 17th, and was largely attended, the Rev. Father Haydon officiating at the graveside, and after the burial he made touching reference to deceased's life and work. He was, he said, possessed of an honest heart, and led an exemplary life. He was a faithful husband, a loving father, and a true friend to all who knew him. As such we can but remember him. The members of the Holy Catholic Guild, of which deceased was a member, attended and acted as pall bearers. The mourners at the graveside were representative of the whole town and district, testifying to the esteem in which the late Mr Cullen was held. Messrs. O'Rourke Bros. had charge of the funeral arrangements. We join with those throughout the district in offering to the bereaved family our sincere sympathy.

Hi Helen,

Roy Kevin Bradley (Chalker/Whittaker) was born in 1914 in Queanbeyan.  Mother Elizabeth Jane and no father listed ...

Now this where the real challenge comes in...  William "Edward" Chalker (b25/12/1870 - no death yet) married Elizabeth Jane Whittaker (b1877) in 1895 in Queanbeyan.   Roy Kevin as you know dies under the surname Bradley so it can be assumed that his Mother, Elizabeth Jane Chalker nee Whittaker was the person who married William Henry Bradley in 1915 Queanbeyan.  Was she a widow by then, a divorcee or what?  The MP database has William Henry Bradley married to Elizabeth Jane Chalker (b1875 Cooma) but now I think that must be incorrect and I have changed the database to reflect this new assumption.

My "guess" as I don't have any certificates to prove my theory is Elizabeth Jane Chalker nee Whittaker was separated from husband "Edward" Chalker and was having a relationship with William Henry Bradley from about 1904 until they married in 1915.  Four children were born to Elizabeth Jane Chalker with no father listed:-

Mary Emma (Mollie) Chalker (married as Bradley) b1904 Parramatta.
Alexander John Chalker (WW2 and Married as Bradley) b24/12/1907 Queanbeyan
Ruth May Chalker (married as Bradley) b1910 Queanbeyan
and Roy Kevin Chalker who dies as a Bradley.

Now that leaves William A. Chalker/Bradley who is registered ...

There is a William Ardsley Bradley who died 13/9/1965 in the ACT and is buried in Woden close to Elizabeth Jane.  Could this be the William A. Chalker born in 1901?

Yes according to his death notice ..

DEATHS
BRADLEY,.William Ardsley, Sept. 13th at Canberra. Late of 119 Causeway. Son of the Late William Henry and Elizabeth Jane Bradley, brother of Lottie (Mrs A. Blewitt), Grace (Mrs S. Lewis), Molly (Mrs A. Reid), Alexander John, May (Mrs Herbert), Kevin,
Lily (Mrs W. Reid) and Darcy. Aged 64 years.
"At Rest."

Which begs the question who was his real father?

If you check the MP database now, I believe we have the correct information and all the right children.

I have also obtained a copy of John Byron's Last Will and Testament which revealed John Byron was an Apothecary with the 3rd Brigade Horse Artillery, located at Fort William, Bengal, India.  John Byron was killed in action on 21/12/1845 during the Battle of Ferozeshah, north west of India.  I do not know his date of birth.  In his Will he details at length how his then wife, Elizabeth McCarty left him abruptly in 1839, by running off with one of their servants, and how this devastated and embarrassed him.  He continued to pay Elizabeth Byron support money up until his death, so that in his life time, she would no be a burden to the pubic.  In 1841, John Byron formed a loving companionship with an native named, Bebee Chunchal @ Bebee Mudharo, (called Byrne), Mary, @ Charlotte, to whom he left everything and named her as Executer of his Last Will and Testament.  John Byron only left Elizabeth Byron one rupee.

JAMES

On 2018-07-25 09:20, Heather Stevens wrote:

Hi Ian

I went to Mitchell Library and checked William James's children's births. I am going to make changes to my tree based on the following:

1) John James, (supposedly the son of wife Mary Lewis) 1829-1829:  birth is not in the index. Looked at death JAMES JOHN 977/1829 V1829977 13: Burial John James St Johns Parramatta 11 May, 5 years, free child [JAMES JOHN 977/1829 V1829977 13 and 8482/1829 V18298482 2C INFANT] Since he is 5 years old when he died and there is no record of birth, I have deleted him.

2)  Jane James b.1845  parents are William James and Mary Ann McNight of Concord, servant (RC Parramatta) [ JAMES JANE 1382/1845 V1845 1382 62 WILLIAM MARY A ] so I have deleted her (note I am assuming she is the same as JAMES JANE 1033/1845 V18451033 145 WILLIAM MARY A which is the reference in your tree)

3)  William James b1852 parents are William and Mary Ann Kenny of Figtree farmer, RC Wollongong.  [JAMES WILLIAM 1787/1852 V1852 1787 121A WILLIAM MARY A ] so I have deleted him from my tree

4) Mary Jane b1851 [2345 V68]  parents are William and Mary Ann Kenny of Figtree farmer, RC Wollongong, so I have deleted her from my tree

5) Christina Ann b.1854 [1915 121A]  parents are William and Mary Ann Kenny of Figtree farmer, RC Wollongong, so I have deleted her from my tree

6) Mary Ann b 1843 and Samuel b1845 - I have changed the place of their births, and Mary Ann's death to Baulkham Hills. 'Baulkham Hills' is in the funeral register for  Mary Ann, and the baptism of Samuel. There is 'of Windsor Rd' is in the baptism of Mary Ann, and Windsor Road goes through the hills district. William is 'farmer' in the births of Mary Ann and Samuel. It sounds like his land was very close to the O'Hara family - I must check on that sometime.

I'm not sure about the 'Hamilton' in George Hamilton James. Where does the Hamilton come from? He is 'George' in his baptism and in his father's will, but I don't know anything else about him.

I hope that this is some help for you.

Hi Ian

Thank you for allowing me to look at Monaro Pioneers.

Could a correction please be made to the site?

There are 4 people that I can see who have incorrect information:

·         William James 1808-1878 , ( MP29859 )

·         his wife Mary Ann O'Hara  (1814-1867) (MP32765)

·         William James James (b 1833) (MP29861)

·         his wife Mary Dod (1838-1867) ( MP196203 )

There seems to be confusion with the two wives.

I am looking at William James 1808-1878 ( MP29859 ) because I am interested in his wife Mary Ann O'Hara (MP32765). I have researched  the O'Hara family extensively and I was interested in finding out what happened to Mary Ann.

Monaro Pioneers has Mary Ann's death as 1867, but this is actually the death of Mary Dod (MP196203) , the wife of one of William's son's William James James (MP29861) (b 1833, mother Esther Beckett).

It is obvious from Mary James nee Dod's death certificate (attached) that she is the one who had been abused by her husband and I would assume it was her who had run away, especially as the newspaper articles all have the name 'Mary', not 'Mary Ann'.

For that reason, I think the following note does not apply to William James and should be placed in the son William James James's page:
'James: My wife Mrs Mary James having left home nearly a fortnight ago without provocation of any sort, this is to caution the public that I will not be responsible for any debts she may contract. Signed by William James of Wargiela 10.4.1865. Yass Courier 12.4.1865.'

Similarly, the following note does not apply to Mary Ann O'Hara and should be placed in Mary Dod's page:

'Yass Gazette on 2 November 1867 indicates that William James may have been guilty of Domestic Violence.
An inquest into the death of his last wife  Mary James indicates that he may have baeten Mary often and badly when they lived in the bush and was the reason she left him.
A quote from the Inquest Jury states "The Jury desire to express their opinion that the conduct of the deceased's husband, both to deceased herself and their children has been most inhuman and deserves their highest censure.".'

I think the confusion arises from an Ancestry tree which previously had the above notes with Mary Ann O'Hara, but now has been transferred to Mary Dod! I myself had copied it into my tree and when I checked the source recently I noticed it had been changed! I am glad that Mary Ann O'Hara was not abused by her husband - she had gone through enough already!

Could you please remove the date of death 1867 Yass from Mary Ann O'Hara. It is actually Mary Dod's death. I don't know when Mary Ann died  - it's a shame she isn't in the death index for Yass.

It is very interesting to see the marriage between Mary Ann O'Hara and William James 20 Jul 1852 at Yass, but again I suspect this is an earlier marriage of the son William James James, because 1)Mary Ann's maiden name was not Barbar, it was Wheeler, and 2) Mary Ann's husband James O'Hara was still alive.

Which brings us to Mary Ann O'Hara's parents and husband. She was born about 1810, her father was Thomas Wheeler of Richmond (Atlas 1 1801) b. abt 1762- d.1820. I don't know her mother's name. Just before Thomas Wheeler died he remarried and this woman married again just after he died and poor Mary Ann was sent to the orphan school. In 1830 she married James O'Hara (1812-1871) at Parramatta by Father Therry, and sadly soon after that the extended O'Hara family were convicted of receiving stolen goods from bushrangers. Mary Ann's husband was sent to Norfolk Island and Mary Ann, with her sister in law Mary O'Hara (my ancestor), and Mary O'Hara's grandmother Mary O'Brien were sent to Moreton Bay. Mary Ann returned in 1839 andsome time later she and William James developed a relationship and they had their baby Mary Ann baptised 1843 at St Pauls church Castle Hill - in the register is the notation ,"Mary Ann O'Hara wife of J.O'Hara discovered afterwards".

Regarding Price, Eliza Winston ( MP32759) who supposedly is Mary Ann's mother. I shake my head in wonderment when I see Eliza Winston Price in people's trees. Where-oh-where does this come from? Please, please remove her - send her back to ol' Virginia where she belongs please.

I hope all this makes sense. I have a public Ancestry tree ('Palmer and Stevens Branches') with more information about Mary Ann O'Hara. If you like I can send you an invitation so you can see it. I will be going into State Library next week and will check William James's children's births.

I have attached Mary James nee Dod's death certificate. Interestingly it looks like the coroner started to write 'Dod' for her father's name but then changed it to 'Due' [?].

I would appreciate it so much if you could make those changes. You may quote my name for the source if you want to.

Kind regards, Heather Stevens

Description: THE LATE MRS. JOHN CLEVERDON
The venerable resident of Olney street whose death, at the age of 92, we briefly recorded yesterday as having taken place that afternoon, at 1.30, had had a remarkably healthy life till very latterly, and also a very interesting history. She was the last of the first family of the Coddingtons, who came out from the Old Country, landing in Sydney shortly before the wreck of the Dunbar.
There are relatives In the Murrum burrah district. A widow when only 18 (her husband was killed by a falling tree, leaving one daughter) , she also lost her second hus band, Mr. Whitechurch, after adding five more children; and.at 32 she made her third marriage, and there were six more children 12 in all. Recently Mr:and Mrs. John Cleverdon happily celebrated their diamond wedding. We announced yesterday that the funeral was to leave for the Murrumburrah cemetery on Friday, but the relatives afterwards decided upon to day for the funeral, which left the residence at 12.30 for the Anglican cemetery, Murrumburrah.
Two of the first six died. The survivors are Mr. Chas. Whitechurch, Young; Mr. Page Whitechurch, Coota mundra; Mrs. William Pilon, Sydney; Mrs. Will Harris, Queensland; Mr. John Cleverdon,Combanlng; Mrs. G:. H. Waters, Cootamundra; Mrs. Ben Williams, Tubbul; Mr. Arthur Cleverdon, Grogan; Miss E. Cleverdon, Cootamundra; Mrs. F. West, Barmedman.
Deceased was a native of England (nee Lucy Coddington). After being on the land at Tubbull Mr. and Mrs. Cleverdon retired to Murrumburrah for four years, and came to Cootamundra about twelve years ago. Deceased's 92nd birthday was on the 8th of this month. Until recently she used to sit up and do fancywork; and some of it was in the non-competitive section of the last Murrumburrah show. It Is Interesting to say that when the couple were alone of a night with the newspapers and books, the grand old lady did most of the reading out.

Description: Drowning Fatality.
On Saturday morning a man named John Nosworthy was found drowned in the Binda Creek, near the bridge, and within a few hundred yards of Funny Hill homestead, by Mr. A. Carr. It appears deceased had been in the employ of Messrs. Garr Bros; for about 8 years. He went into Binda last week, and left for home on Thursday night. On Friday his dog arrived home, which fact caused a little anxiety and a search was made, resulting as above stated; It is surmised, that deceased missed his footing when crossing the hand bridge and fell between the railing, probably being rendered unconscious, as by all accounts he had slight marks on the head as if he had struck against some hard object. He was 54 years of age and unmarried.
Mr. S. L. Cox, J.P., District Coroner, held an inquest at the Royal Hotel, Binda, on Sunday, when a verdict of found drowned was recorded.
The remains of deceased were interred in the Church of England portion of the Binda cemetery, on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. H; E. Hetherington officiating at the grave.

Description: WEDDING.
The Rev. W. H. Beale officiated at a quiet wedding which took place at the Rockdale Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 22, when Mr. Ernest Lamb Place, only son of the late Mr. John Robert Place, of Arncliffe, was married to Miss Elizabeth Alice Nosworthy, fourth daughter of Mr. John Nosworthy, of Arncliffe, formerly of Goulburn.
The bride was dressed in white silk, trimmed with lace and orange blossoms, and a streasth and veil, the latter being the same as worn by the bridegroom's mother. The three bridesmaids were Miss Essie M. Place, sister of the bridegroom, and Misses Eflie and Gladys Nosworthsy, nieces of she bride. The best man was Mr. A. C. Nosworsthy.
The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a gold blue enamel and pearl true-lovers' knot brooch (similar to the one his grandfather gave his bride), and to the bridesmaids he gate a gold brooch with a ruby and pearl horseshoe. A reception was held at Merrilla, the residence of the bride's parents, after which refreshments were served in a large marquee on the lawn.

JAMES/O’HARA/DOD

Thank you Heather, your requested changes have been made.

Regards, Ian

Hi David,

Just a short note to thank you for putting me in touch with Meika loofs Samorzewski, from Hobart. Meika is a descendent of the Irish Sheehys, one worked for William Adams Brodribb, on his property at Bullanamang, near Bredbo during the 1840’s, as did my great great grandfather Hugh larkin an Irish convict. Much has been written about many of the Pioneers of the Monaro, but it seems that little has been recorded of the early convict shepherds who were often sent miles from the main camp or homestead, and where early contact with the first people, theNgunnawal and the other tribes, often befell men like my ancestor. We would be pleased to hear from any of your readers in regard to those early shepherds.

Best regards
