Comments (Power, John b. 1799 Ireland d. 6 Sep 1872 Wyndham, New South Wales): I’m finding your website fantastic and it’s been so helpful in my research

On the Breens. My soon to be wife Maree, is descended from Daniel Breen who married Mary Anne Byrnes but his son Michael Joseph married Emma Jess who was John George Jess’ daughter.

Working up from John George Jess’ wife Jane Power, Jane’s father is supposed to be John Power who was a convict from Ireland landed in 1822 on the Prince of Orange but I simply can’t find a record of him being on this ship. Are you able to provide some sort of verification?

Rob Isaacs

Hi Rob,

The information we have is as supplied to us and we have no documentary evidence of John Power’s arrival.  I recommend you look at the following link for more detail on him and his family and a contact to discuss further.

Subject:  Found old bank book

Hi Ian,

I was wondering if you may know any of the family descended from John Nichall(?) Woodhouse?

Years ago I helped demolish a house next to Tea Gardens near Nimmitabel and we found a rolled up bank book in behind the wall that was being used as a mouse house. I rescued the book and have had it ever since and always wondered if I could find an interested relative. I just came across the Monaro Pioneers site and thought I would see if you might be able to assist?

The bank book dates back to 1938/39 and was with the Commercial Bank, Jindabyne branch. It is fascinating as it states the names of all the individuals and business's he dealt with.

I hope someone can help find a relative. Otherwise would a local museum be interested? I would prefer to find a relative.

Thanks,  Libby

Hi Libby,

I suggest you put the details and perhaps a photo of the book on our Facebook page.  I am sure you will attract some interest that way.

HIGGS/MOORE

From: Anne Hibbard
Sent: Friday, 22 September 2017 7:52 PM
Subject: Mary Higgs, George Higgs and Sarah Moore

Dear Monaro Pioneers,

Thanks so much for your very informative website.  I do have family who were Monaro Pioneers and are on your website.  It’s wonderful to have all the genealogies together like that for reference.

I’m a descendant of George Higgs   great, great, great grandfather   (1799-1862) MP48358    and Sarah Moore MP48359.    (great , great, great grandmother)

Sarah Higgs 1842-1882  (great great grandmother )   MP172446

George Stephen During   (great great grandfather ) MP250209

Catherine Higgs (great grandmother)  1871    MP250212

If you are interested I can add Catherine’s descendants.

I have had shared DNA matching with trees  with two different people on Ancestry.com ,  one for George Higgs and Sarah Moore

and another with Sarah Higgs.  So I’m pretty confident these are my family.

However ,  I’m still not sure if Sarah Moore was originally Hopkin/s or not as I’ve been trying to work out why people think the Sarah Moore that married George Higgs was Sarah Hopkin.  There are a few inconsistencies with her death certificate and George’s request with marriage with Sarah Hopkin.   DOB, place of birth. (Campbell Town not Parramatta,  1803/8 not 1799)    I’m struggling to see why people jump to match them together other than everyone does it.

I did note on your website something interesting.

On your page for my great great grandmother Sarah Higgs (1842) MP172446   your site says

2] Roman Catholic, with sister Mary, 20 February 1849. BORN 27 December 1842
Sarah's double baptism is one of the recorded facts which ties this family together - without it there would be very little to accurately connect the George and Sarah HIGGS family and the George HIGGS and Sarah HOPKINS family as one family group.

I have been trying to verify this second Catholic  baptism which would in part add credence to the linking of Sarah Moore with Sarah Hopkin as Sarah Hopkin’s mother was and Irish Catholic Convict from Dublin.  Hannah Birmingham.

I tried to search on ancestry.com for the Catholic baptism but to no avail.

I thought then I would try and find Mary Higgs birth details who was supposed to be baptised with her sister, my great great grandmother.

I looked at the reference for Mary Higgs on your website  in this family.MP57426     I saw there was a reference for her birth certificate. with  NSW BDM Index   V18471700 32A/1847

I looked up ancestry.com and found a Mary Higgs with exactly the same NSW BDM Index   V18471700 32A

However although in same area  it was for different parents,  Not  George Higgs and Sarah  but Jesse Higgs and Ann

Mary Higgs

Birth Date:

1847

Birth Place:

New South Wales

Registration Year:

1847

Registration Place:

Aruleun, Braidwood, New South WalesAustralia

Father:

Jesse Higgs

Mother:

Ann

Volume Number:

V18471700 32A

I am wondering if there is any proof  that  this joint baptism  of Sarah and Mary Higgs in the Catholic Church in 1848  was for my great great grandmother Sarah Higgs  with parents  George Higgs and Sarah

I would really like to know who my great great great grandmother Sarah Moore who married George Higgs  was, and also learn more about the rest of my family who spent so much time in the Monaro region.

Thanking you,  Anne Hibbard

Hi Anne,

I agree, the link to Sarah Hopkin(s)  is tenuous to say the least.  I have not seen any documentation to support the double baptism argument so am not in a position to adjudicate either way.

However, given that Sarah Hopkin(s) was born July 1st, 1799 and appears to still be having children with William Moore (according to LDS transcriptions) after the first born to George Higgs (Oct 20th 1838) would add weight to your doubts.  I think that Sarah Hopkin(s) would have been a most remarkable woman, if in fact she was the wife of George Higgs because their last child was born March 12th, 1851 making her nearly 52 years of age which at that time was highly usual for a woman to still be bearing children.

I will change our records accordingly.

If you have any copies of BDM certificates I would be most appreciative if you could send me a copy to add to the individual’s records in our database.  I would also very much appreciate any information you can provide on Catherine and her descendants.

The pioneers index entry for George Higgs does list the contact information for the contributors of the Higgs information so you might try contacting them to discuss your request.

Regards, Ian

Subject: Suggest a change: Hopkins, Mary Elizabeth (I98359)

Hello Ian ... I am working on some old land records in Bega (in the main shopping area). The MP website has been so helpful for sorting out relationships where there were several part owners.

Regarding Mary .. her date of death was 19 Sept 1942 (“aged 66 years”).

This is the only death for a Mary Brown in 1942 at Bega

Her husband’s name seems to be spelt “LaW...”  (this is also the spelling on the Old Deeds I am looking at).

The death notice indicates issue from second marriage of a daughter Beryl (though there is nothing in the births index up to 1916).

There is a 1942 marriage of Beryl Alexander Brown to Charles Phillip Cumberland (at Bega). If it is this person MP231184  then he married a year after he enlisted. He apparently died 21 Feb 1999  (Ryersons)

Beryl Alexander Cumberland died 17(?) August 2011 (there is apparently an Obit in the Bega District News 30 Aug 2011 ... but I don’t have access to it)

Sorry ... these last bits unsubstantiated and so may not be of use to you.

Ian, when someone on the FaceBook page asks for help and no relatives answer within a week or two, I sometimes do a bit of research and post things like screenshots of relevant BDM index entries; or bits from the newspaper.  Should I also be sending this information to you? ... or do you use helpful FaceBook page posts to add information to your database?

Thank you again for all the hard work

best wishes ..Liz

Hi Liz,

Thank you for the information.  Sorry for the delay in my reply, my email system has been causing me some problems.  If you do add information to Facebook, please send me a separate copy as I am unable to monitor Facebook on a regular basis.

Description: From 'The Cumberland Argus', 10 March 1954:

FLAGS flew in Chestnut Road, Auburn, on a sunny October day in '45, when a great welcome home awaited Private Carlyle Clarence Smith (45) and his eldest son, Private Keith Smith (24), returning after three and a half years together in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Smith, a former railway guard, and his son, enlisted together, reached Malaya with the first Australian contingent, were captured together, endured hell on earth together. Often desperately sick and despairing, the father was devotedly nursed by his son. Last week, the son again sat at his father's bedside in the Repatriation General Hospital, Concord, where the flame of life, long dimmed by prisoner of war camp suffering, feebly flickered and was gone.

Description: From 'The Catholic Press', 25 July 1907:

DEATH OF ALLAN McKEIG.  On Monday afternoon week a young lad named Allan McKeig, son of Mr Sandy McKeig, of Jeir, near Yass met with an untimely end.  He was evidently thrown or fell off his horse, for he was found some time after in a dying state, only living for a short while after being picked up.  It appears the young lad was suffering from whooping cough, and must have commenced to cough whilst riding along and became powerless, for some of the goods that he was sent to purchase were found some distance away.  Great sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs McKeig.  The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and was largely attended, the scholars from St Augustine's boys' school walking in front of the hearse as a mark of respect to their schoolmate.  The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery, the Rev Father O'Reilly officiating at the grave. RIP.

Hi Ian,

I believe that the list of children for John & Rebecca THURSTON should be amended as follows:-

Include:  Henry H. Wakeling/Thurston, born 1884 in Cooma.

Exclude:  Henry William Thurston, born 1903 in Bega.

The attached Notes explain my reasoning.

Please let me know what you think.

Regards, Robert Ward.

Hi Robert,

I agree with your conclusion about Henry H. Thurston(Wakeling).  As for Henry William, I suspect he is in fact Arthur Maurice Thurston born 1895 but as yet I am unable to verify my presumption.  Arthur Maurice enlisted in the 1st AIF in 1916 and was subsequently listed as a deserter but later found to be seriously ill in Cooma Hospital which led to him being discharged medically unfit.  Why Arthur Maurice (Henry William) would want to enlist in the 2nd WW under an assumed name is open to speculation.

Regards, Ian

Description: From 'The Queanbeyan Age', 29 July 1869:

MELANCHOLY FATAL ACCIDENT.  A sad and extraordinary fatal accident occurred on last Saturday at Spring Flat, Back Creek, Gundaroo, the remarkable feature of the case being that a child five years old felled with a tomahawk a tree of considerable dimensions which came down on a younger child, a sister three years old, causing her instant death, and severely crushing the hand of another little playmate.  The details of the case are as follow: The deceased, Maria McMullen, was the daughter of John McMullen, farmer, of Back Creek.  On the morning of the sad event Mrs McMullen was confined, and the deceased and her brother were sent away to the care of a neighbour, a Mrs Read, who resides about a quarter of a mile from the McMullens.  At Mrs Read's residence, the two children from McMullens were joined by three of Read's children, aged respectively six, four, and two years, and the whole party began playing together.  Mrs Read, noticing a tomahawk in the hands of the elder McMullen, a boy five years and three months old, took it from him; but soon afterwards at his request gave it back to him for the purpose of cutting her some firewood.  Mrs Read's attention was next attracted by the screaming of children, and on hastening out of doors she found, about a hundred yards from her house, the deceased Maria McMullen lying under a fallen tree, the branches of it pressing on her chest.  Mrs Read lifted the branches sufficiently to extricate the child, who merely moaned and then died.  Mrs Read immediately sent one of her own children to the father of deceased, she herself meanwhile carrying the dead child and her own infant in the same direction, and met him on the way and delivered up to him the deceased.  It was not until then that she noticed that one of her own children was severely hurt, and upon inquiry found that the tree had caused this injury also. The right hand and fingers were completely crushed, and the poor little thing, only four years old, was suffering intensely.  Dr Morton was sent for the same night, and hastening to the locality dressed the wounds of the little sufferer.  Being on the spot, Dr Morton, in his capacity as coroner, on the forenoon of the following day, held an inquest on view of the dead body of McMullen's child.  On a careful examination of the body, it is strange to relate, no external marks of violence were found, no fracture of any of the ribs or other bones, and no marks of bruises or contusions.  The tree which on being cut down had caused the death of the child was also examined by the jury, and was found to be 27 inches in girth where cut through.  After hearing the evidence, which was in substance as above the jury returned a verdict — accidentally killed.

Description: From 'The Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser', 6 March 1928:

The death occurred at Yass on Wednesday last of Mr John McMullen at the age of 88 years.  For the greater part of his life Mr McMullen had enjoyed good health.  In the last six months, however, his health began to fail, and for the concluding fortnight he was bedridden.  He retained his faculties to the last.  A native of the County of Antrim, Ireland, he came to Australia in 1860, when 20 years of age.  He came through to Bungendore, and five years later married Miss Bridget Byrne, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Owen Byrne, granddaughter of the late Mr Michael Dwyer, the famous Wicklow chief, and sister of the late Mother Walburga of the Good Samaritan Order at Tempe.  Mrs McMullen died 17 years ago.  There were eight children of the marriage, and all survive except one, Jack, who was killed at Ypres in 1917.  The others are Messrs Patrick and Owen McMullen (Wagga), Richard McMullen (Carrathool), James McMullen (Goulburn), Mrs S Coulton (Wagga), Mrs A Williams and Mrs A McKeig (Yass).  Shortly after their marriage Mr and Mrs McMullen settled in the Yass district, the husband following farming pursuits for many years.  The funeral took place in the Catholic portion of the Yass cemetery on Thursday, the Rev Father O'Connor officiating at the grave.

Re:  Alice SHEEHY

At present the MP Site shows two Alice Sheehy.

1.    Alice (10181/1876 Cooma) – Father:  John      Mother:  Mary Ann

2.    Alice (10195/1896 Cooma) – Father:  Richard  Mother:  Margaret

Currently you are showing Alice (No.2) as being married to Samuel Harper.

I am attaching two transcriptions –

Marriage of Alice Sheehy and Samuel Harper

Death of Alice Harper (nee Sheehy)

Alice is obviously one of the many children of Mary Ann Rawlings the father of whom is open to question.  Marriage says John Sheehy, the Death says Peter Thurbon.

Would you please make the necessary corrections to the MP site.

Thanking you, and kind regards.  Thanks for taking on such a mammoth, and unending, task.

Hi Ian

I recently joined the Monaro Pioneers website and I find it a vey interesting and important source for people interested in their heritage and family history. I personally have connections with some of the families listed in the website (e.g. Britt, Crisp and Day).

The reason I am writing is that in the section on the descendants of James Delany there is no reference to his grandson Athol James Delany.  He was my wife's step-grandfather and I knew him personally.

Athol was the son of James Thomas Delany and Mary Ruby Pratt and the brother of Nerridah Delany. He was born on 23 June 1919 and died in Merimbula on 22 December 1985 and is buried in the Cooma cemetery.

For the completeness and integrity of the Monaro Pioneers website Athol should be included in the Delany family history.

Kind Regards,  Geoff Britt

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for letting us know, Athol James Delany has now been added to our records.

Can you please advise who he married, where and when?

Hi Ian

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Athol's wife was born Gertrude Lavina Harvey on 12 July 1907. She married Hubert Paul Brady on 18 July 1925 and was later widowed. She married Athol in Jindabyne in 1967.

Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 9 August 1944:

GREEN-JOHNSON - St Christopher's Church, Manuka, was the scene of a pretty wedding on Saturday, July 15, when Edith Agnes, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Johnson, Ainslie, and Pte John Frederick Green, (AIF ret), son of Mr and Mrs J Green, of Cootamundra, were married.  The ceremony was performed by Monsígnor Haydon.  The bride, who entered the church on the arm of Mr W Tracy, chose a gown of white, embossed satin cut on classical lines.  The embroidered tulle veil was held in place with a coronet of orange blossom.  She carried a bouquet of hyacinths and camelias.  The bridesmaids were Misses M Johnson and M Phillips, who were frocked alike in dusty pink flat crepe with shoulder length tulle veils held in place with haloes of sweet peas.  Bouquets of pink camelias and mauve sweet peas were carried.  The groom was attended by Sgt G Harris and Cpl C Taylor.  During the signing of the register, Miss A Hughes sang "Ave Maria".  The reception was held at the Top Hat Cafe, Manuka, where the guests were received by the bride's sister, Mrs C Higgins, assisted by Mrs Green.  The bride's travelling frock was of dusty pink with black accessories.
