Monaro Pioneers Newsletter

2017 Number 01

 ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A LETTER FROM KELLIE

“A site like Monaro Pioneers is not built by a handful of Researchers/Administrators.”

A site like Monaro Pioneers is built by hundreds of people who all chip in that bit of "knowledge" they have and the rest of us just try to match it all up to make one BIG Tree.

I have worked on many sites and donated millions of hours, only to see those sites get to 'size' where they close off and begin charging  a "membership" fee etc to access the data and research that I supplied for free.  Not just me either. I know of many researchers who gave up 'helping' because they ended up having to pay to access data they researched and supplied for free. Not to mention  the hundreds of people who also end up having to pay for 'work/data' that was supplied free of charge.

Many moons ago when I began helping on Monaro Pioneers that was the ONE thing I kept checking and asking about...will it always be FREE?

Today we have a database that pretty much spans the world, is growing regularly and is FREE for everyone.  The Admins work to keep it FREE but it is YOU people who help to keep it growing.

Each month in the newsletter people thank the Monaro Pioneers site. Today, I would like to thank each and every one of YOU for taking the time to sign up, join in and supply those bit's of data that none of us would ever know about,,,,unless YOU told us.

Monaro Pioneers is built by ALL of you. I thank you for that and I am sure everyone else does too.

Merry Christmas to you all and keep it coming.

It might only be one change or one bit of information BUT in a tree ONE change can mean all the difference!

If you can, please chip in that bit of "knowledge" in the form of BDM certificates, newspaper articles, etc which will help Monaro Pioneers to continue growing and keep the MP Team off the streets.

CURRENT CORRESPONDENCE:

PRENDERGAST

From: Barry and Jenny
Sent: 2017-01-29 12:48 PM
Subject: Greetings from Jennifer Wood(nee Prendergast)

Dear David,

Greetings from the beautiful Whitsundays in Queensland.

I will be visiting Cooma and staying at Woodvale cottage Cooma from 28 February until 2 March 2017. I am a Prendergast descendant and would love to meet other Prendergast/Pendergast descendants who live in the Monaro area

How would you suggest I do this? Do you have a family history group that meets regularly in Cooma? Where does the group meet please?

I have a very exciting year coming up with a visit to Ireland where I have been invited to deliver a paper on the Prendergast/Pendergast family at a Conference in Nenagh, Tipperary May 2017.

I am documenting the Prendergast trail from the Sydney, the Hawkesbury, the Monaro, the Victorian High Plains and East Gippsland. This video will form part of the paper entitled ”The quest to find Prendergast family” that I will deliver at Nenagh.

I am delighted to let you know that I will also host a High Tea on 30 May, 2017 at Enniscorthy Castle to say thank you to the kind people of Enniscorthy who honoured me with a Welcome home civic ceremony in July 2015. I was touched by their kindness and wish to repay the gesture.

In 2015 I was awarded a RADF Grant to travel to Ireland to research my Prendergast family history. I attended the genealogy Summer school at University College Cork before travelling to Dublin and whilst residing at Trinity College, undertook a bespoke Archives visit of Dublin and with experts in tow, visited the various repositories there. These included the Registry of Deeds, National Archives and National Library of Ireland. I also visited Glasnevin cemetery and viewed Prendergast ancestors graves.

I was honoured to be the only Australian to be invited to the launch of the Catholic Parish Registers. I met the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and passed on the well wishes from the people of Australia.

I posted a blog www.prendergastfamilyhistory.wordpress.com  that you might be interested to view. It details my Prendergast family history journey so far.

Warmest Whitsunday Wishes,

Jennifer Wood(nee Prendergast)

Thanks for the update Jennifer.

Monaro Pioneers

Dear David,

Thank you for your email and for offering to post my email in the Monaro Pioneer’s Newsletter. It is great that it will be published this week in time for my Cooma visit.

There may be  Prendergast/Pendergast family members who would like to meet up with me while I am in Cooma who can help fill in some of the gaps I have. Please feel free to pass on my email details to them.

I would especially like to solve the mystery disappearance off all Australian records of Catherine Prendergast. Catherine is the mother of John Prendergast/Pendergast one of your Monaro Pioneers.

If you would like to post the link to my blog on your Newsletter that would be greatly appreciated as it will fill in my background for anyone interested. It is www.prendergastfamily.wordpress.com

I will ensure that I am at the Cooma Library Tuesday 28 February in the afternoon. Thank you for supplying the contact details.

Sadly, I will leave Cooma on Thursday 2 March and miss the Cooma/Historical Historical Society meeting.

I will happily post my email to the MP Facebook group.

I have emailed the Snowy Monaro Regional Council Interim General Manager Joseph Vescio and am hoping to meet with him to talk about my trip to Ireland in May. I have not had a reply yet.

I have asked him for a letter addressed to the people of Ireland inviting them to come to Australia and to walk in the footsteps of their Irish ancestor’s who were transported to Australia and whose descendants helped make Australia the fine Nation that it is.

This letter would be presented to the Chairman Wexford County Council (similar position as an Australian state premier) Paddy Kavanagh who is the special guest at my High Tea in Enniscorthy. Cllr Kavanagh has already accepted my invitation for May 30th.

There will be a few noted genealogists invited as well.

Warmest Whitsunday Wishes,

Jennifer Wood(nee Prendergast)

Description: From 'The Scrutineer & Berrima District Press', 20 April 1898:

ROBERTSON.  An inquest was held on Friday afternoon at the Royal Hotel, before Mr A D Badgery JP (coroner), and a jury of 12, touching the death of a young woman named Selina Burgess, a domestic servant; who died at the hotel early that morning.  From the evidence it appears that deceased stated to the groom on several occasions that she was tired of life, and would take a dose of some thing.  On the Wednesday evening she retired to bed saying she was unwell.  Next morning she was so ill that she had to remain in bed, and was attended to by Dr Wilson, who resides at the hotel.  In answer to enquiries she denied having taken any thing.  That night she admitted to Dr Wilson and Constable Westropp having taken some 'Rough on Rats' from out of a box on the mantelpiece of Mr Graham's bedroom.  The doctor was in constant attendance but she died about 4 am on Friday morning.  The medical evidence was to the effect that the illness and death of deceased was due to some irritant poison such a  s phosphorus contained in 'Rough on Rats'.  The jury returned a verdict to the effect "that deceased died from the effects of a certain poison, 'Rough on Rats,' self-administered."  Deceased's father and mother arrived at Robertson on Saturday morning, when the deceased was buried in the Robertson cemetery.  The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr T E Bursill.  Deceased was only 16 years of age, and only five weeks in employ.

Description: From 'The Tumut & Adelong Times', 30 November 1943:
Death came to the home of Mr and Mrs W Earnshaw, of Adelong, on Saturday night last when Mr William Earnshaw sr, father of the aforementioned, passed on in his sleep.  Mr Earnshaw has been living in retirement for some years, and although his health has not been exactly robust yet he enjoyed life in his quiet way.  He was 71 years of age at the time of his death.  Born at Goulburn, Mr Earnshaw followed many pursuits in his lifetime and moved about the country a lot.  He married in Narandera quite early in life and then came to make his home in Adelong.  For many years he was an employee of the Gadara Shire Council.  Three children in all survive him, they being William, with whom he was resident, Emily (Mrs Reub McGowan) and Jack, who also lives in Adelong.  The funeral was conducted by the Rev C B Alexander on Monday last, when friends and well wishers of the family followed the hearse to the last resting place.  Boston Bros were in charge of the funeral arrangements.  On behalf of this paper we extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives on the sad loss have sustained.

From 'The Wagga Wagga Daily Advertiser', 18.12.1943:
The death took place suddenly on November 27 of Mr W Earnshaw, at the age of 71 years.  Born at Goulburn, he was an old and respected resident of Adelong, and he and his wife reared a family of boys and girls Emily (Mrs R McGowan, of Sydney), and William and Jack (Adelong).  He worked for many years for the council and was an able and honest worker.  When he retired he lived the remainder of his life with his son William, at whose home he died.  Mrs Earnshaw died a few years ago.  William, the eldest son, served in New Guinea and returned home a few months ago, being discharged medically unfit.  The interment was in the Church of England cemetery, the Rev R Alexander officiating.  Messrs Boston Bros were the undertakers.

Description: From 'The Goulburn Post', 27 August 1948:

ERENSHAW, Emily Agnes. - The relatives and friends of Mr Ernest [sic] Erenshaw, 9 Addison St, Goulburn, are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of his dearly loved wife, the late EMILY AGNES ERENSHAW, which will leave St Saviour's Cathedral tomorrow afternoon (Saturday), after a Service commencing at 4.45 pm, for the Church of England Cemetery, Goulburn.

From 'The Goulburn Post', 30 August 1948:

The death occurred of Mrs Emily Erenshaw, of 9 Addison Street, Goulburn, at the District Hospital on Friday after a lengthy illness.  The late Mrs Erenshaw was born in Braidwood 57 years ago, coming to Goulburn with her husband in 1933.  She is survived by her husband and a son, Leo, of Blackheath.  The funeral took place on Saturday after a service at St Saviour's Cathedral.

From 'The Goulburn Post', 20 September 1948:

Labour Stalwart Passes - Mr Allan Fraser, MHR, writes: The Labour Movement in Eden-Monaro has suffered a severe loss with the passing of Emily Agnes Erenshaw, wife of Mr Edward Erenshaw, of Addison Street, Goulburn. To thousands of Goulburn electors she was best known for her unfailing work for the Labour candidate on polling day. No matter what the weather or the state of her own health, she took her place outside the booth and, with her husband, was an unceasing worker throughout the day in distributing voting cards. She knew a large proportion of the voters by name and had a smile and a word for all of them. But though this was the sphere of activity in which Mrs Erenshaw was most generally known, it was only a small part of her all-the-year round work for the Labour cause. She was constant in her attendance at ALP branch meetings, a leader in the Women's Auxiliary, and active in all the work of the party. Prior to coming to Goulburn 13 years ago, Mrs Erenshaw had been equally act  ive in the Braidwood district.

Indeed, for me she represented an inspiration to service because she was unselfish, cheerful and undaunted whatever the situation. All those who came in contact with her will agree that she was of the salt of the earth, and there will be the deepest sympathy for her husband for they were inseparable companions with ideals and interests truly shared. The late Mrs Erenshaw, who was born at Braidwood, was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph Yeats. Both her parents were also natives of the district, her father having been born in Braidwood and her mother in Araluen. Mrs Erenshaw was aged 57.

The Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, expressed great regret at the passing of Mrs Erenshaw whom he had known personally for many years. "Mrs Erenshaw," he said, "was a splendid citizen, always ready to help a good cause. Her work for the Labour Party will be long remembered and her memory held in honour."

Her husband, the late Robert White, predeceased her by 11 years.  Three sons and five daughters survive.  They are: Messrs Bob, Ted and Charlie White, of Bungendore, Blanche (Mrs E O'Connell, Canberra), Mary, Lena (Mrs Harold Lee, Bungendore), Eileen and Elsie (Mrs Les McIntyre) (Queanbeyan).  Mrs Frank Gee, of Goulburn, and Mrs Sheedy, of Tharwa, are sisters, and Messrs E Erenshaw (Goulburn) and J Erenshaw (Adelong) are brothers of the deceased.

The funeral cortege left St Gregory's Church, Queanbeyan, for the Catholic cemetery, Hoskinstown.  Rev Fr Egan officiated at the graveside.

OBITUARY

MR. CHARLES SHURMER

Mr. Charles Shurmer, an old and widely respected resident of Goulburn, died at his late residence, Mayor- street, early on Wednesday morning of hemorrhage of the brain. He had been in indifferent health, but his death was unexpected. Additional sadness is lent by the fact that his widow is also seriously ill, having been confined to her bed for many months.

Mr. Shurmer leaves a family of five daughters--Mrs. A. Larcombe, Mrs. B.

Smith (Ballina-street), and Misses Eva, Jessie, and Florence, all of Goulburn.

The late Mr. Shurmer was born at Bangalore (Komungla) in 1853, and during his 68 years of life passed through some stirring times. He spent some years on the Araluen goldfields, and had several encounters with bushrangers, of whom he often discoursed in later years. Eventually be settled in Goulburn, and for some time carried on important contracting for the Goulburn City Council, later being associated with Mr. Campbell in a furniture business. A short time since he retired from active pursuits. The body was interred this afternoon in the C. of E. portion of the general cemetery.

Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 19 September 1941:

MR JOSEPH READ - The death occurred on Monday night last at his late residence of Mr Joseph Read, Wattle Grove, Sutton.  The late Mr Read was 63 years of age and had lived in this district all his life, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs Hugh Read, who were amongst the pioneers of the Canberra and Queanbeyan district. Being a sheep and wheat farmer of more than average ability, the late Mr Read built up a very fine property and was a very successful breeder of fat lambs. His advice and experience of farming were frequently sought and his ideas in these matters are reflected in the well-managed property he has left behind. The late Mr Read had not been in the best of health for some time during the past eight months has been under constant medical attention but despite every care and attention from his family, gradually became worse. He is survived by his widow, four daughters and five sons, Geoffrey having been on active service since the beginning of the war.  The funeral service wa  s held on Wednesday afternoon in the St John's Church of England, Canberra, and was largely attended. The Ven Archdeacon Robertson officiated at the graveside after having held a service in the Church.  Mr M H O'Rourke had charge of the funeral arrangements.

Hello James OKeefe,

Your genealogy user account has been activated.

Ian Harvey

Hi Ian,

Thank you so much for that...

I have been able to check only a couple of details this morning.

I am overdue for a visit to the Queanbeyan Museum & Historical Society..

I am following through on research of my own family (from Michael O'Keeffe of Tharwa).

His story is directly linked to his wife's family (Mary Gallagher, sister of Patrick Gallagher of Erindale) & niece of Michael Gallagher (of Lanyon & Erindale).

Michael Gallagher's story is also intertwined with Mary Keegan (orphan, from Mullingar, Ireland - MG bought her to Australia with he & his wife. Mary Keegan married Joseph Matthew Oldfield & was matriarch of that large family.

If you have any connections or knowledge of those family to pass on, it would be greatly appreciated.

I believe I may gain even more from the info of Eroll Scarlett-Lea's family history notes & book "Queanbeyan District & People", but haven't been able to resource a copy in Sydney yet.

Many thanks - I appreciate all the work behind your website/databases ect - well done.

Jock O'Keefe

Hi Jock,

Are you able to provide more details of the Gallagher's so that I can make the connections in our database please?

Regards,  Ian

Hi Ian,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.

The basic details that I have are as follows;

Michael Gallagher B: approx 1805 Irishtown, Westmeath, Ireland D: 1898 Queanbeyan

Worked as a groom and gardener to Charles Levington of Levington Park in Mullingar.

M - Elizabeth Moran B: approx 1813 - Killucan, Westmeath, Ireland? D:1885

Son - John Gallagher B: approx 1830 Irishtown D: 1841 on board ship to Aust.

Nephew - Patrick Gallagher B:1857 Irishtown D:1928 Queanbeyan M: Catherine Wall (1865-1946)

Niece - Mary Gallager B: 1860 Irishtown D: 1955 Sydney M: Michael Doyle O'Keeffe (B: 1861 Conna, Co Cork, Ireland -D: 1947 Sydney)

There is a line used in the book "Canberra" by W. Davis Wright - that states "He (Michael Gallagher) married, at 25, Elizabeth Moran, whose people were in the employ of Mr Cunningham, of Lanyon". The timeline for the Gallaghers arrival at Lanyon (see below) would suggest that other Morans came later. But I would be very interested to know (& be in contact with) if there was a Moran family from Mullingar already in the area prior to 1842.

I have pulled out a little of what I know (some of the accounts are conflicting & misleading) to give a brief picture of 'our' Gallaghers. Obviously by continuing to dig deeper on my research I would love to be in contact with any persons also checking Gallaghers, Oldfields, Morans etc - to fill out more of the big picture.

Many thanks,  Jock O'Keefe

Michael Gallagher (and family) in Australia

The Australian founding father of the maternal line (from Pop’s parents) appears to be the uncle of our Great Grandmother - Michael Gallagher of Mullingar, Ireland as uncle to Mary Gallagher, who married Michael O’Keeffe in 1892.

Michael Gallagher, who hailed from Irishtown, Mullingar (various sources) in County Westmeath in Ireland. He is documented in the shipping logs as having arrived with his wife Elizabeth (Moran) in 1842 - with no children between them – on the ship “Palestine”. They had, unfortunately, set out from Ireland with their last surviving son, John, who perished on board soon after departure. The couple had previously lost another 4 sons in Ireland.

Michael and Elizabeth Gallagher were immediately engaged to work (hired while on board ship with Davis) for Mr William Davis (on behalf of James Wright)  at “Lanyon Homestead, Queanbeyan”. He had made a favourable impression on this gentleman on the voyage from Southampton. Mr Davis was the father-in-law of Lanyon’s owner, James Wright & travelling there with his own wife & children.

(Ship’s documents detail this & also additional details of their young (orphaned?) companion, Mary Keagon/Caigon*)

Notes;

James Wright had married Mary Davis in 1838.

Lanyon was sold to Andrew Cunningham in (approx.) 1847 – after a period of insolvency but not outright bankruptcy by James Wright. It continued then to be one of the most prosperous & successful properties in the area. The buildings & original homestead (Built by Michael Gallagher) still remain as a tourist attraction/destination run by the National Trust.

[There was a Cunningham that travelled on the same ship - The Palestine in 1842 - listed as a shepherd for work on the Molonglo Plains]

Michael Gallagher continued to work for James Wright at Cuppacumbalong - and was an esteemed foreman, builder & formal garden designer. He remained in his employ until 1854 – when he moved to work his own lease at Waniassa Estate.

When Robertson Selection Act came to be in the early 1860’s Michael Gallagher was free to purchase & establish his own property. He chose an area of 200 acres near Tuggeranong that he named “Erindale”. This property remained part of the Gallagher family for the next 70-100 years (sheep farming was still taking place in 1972 – whereas the farm & plant had been sold off in 19__?)

The area was vast enough to now contain two whole suburbs of Canberra – Monash & Gowrie – with the central site of the original homestead now appearing as the “Erindale Community Centre”.

*Mary Caigon (as her name appears on the shipping records – she is alternately referred to as Keagon/Keegan) arrived “under the care” of Michael and Elizabeth Gallagher on the “Palestine” in 1842.  She was also immediately taken up for work as a ‘farm servant” to work at Lanyon Estate.

Her story continues and then is interwoven with the Gallagher & O’Keeffe families. Mary Keegan soon married Joseph Oldfield who had been one of the longest serving and trusted Lanyon employees, under James Wright, as a shepherd and then the farm constable (Lanyon had it’s own jail). Joseph had previously been a convict assigned to James Wright but had proven his worth in rounding up other runaways/absconders.

The Oldfields went on to have eight sons as Joseph proceeded to take work with the Cunningham owners and later selected his own land at ‘HalfMoon” in the Naas district. THERE IS EVIDENCE OF JOSEPH OLDFIELD OWNING ADJOINING PROPERTIES WITH Michael O’Keeffe, James Wright and the De Salis families.

Next step, that I can find, is Michael Gallagher sponsoring his nephew - from Mullingar, Co Westmeath - Patrick Gallagher to Australia in 1880, aboard the 'Devon'. Patrick was also from Mullingar, Westmeath & was 25 at arrival - listed as a 'labourer' (hard to transcribe ?).

Michael Gallagher could have been between 60-75 at that time & ready to 'hand over the reins' (if Erindale was operating at the time)but I haven't been able to find an establishment date for the station as yet. The timing & arrangements between them is vague until i find more info on that.

Patrick Gallagher is listed as the sponsor for Mary Gallagher then in 1886 - Michael G is listed as being resident in Yarralumla, Queanbeyan. She then arrived in December 1886 aboard 'Port Victor' (needs checking?).

In 'Canberra' by W. Davis Wright (He devotes 2 pages to Michael Gallagher) it states that (Michael Gallagher) "sent home for a niece & nephew, who did their duty by the old couple and stayed with them to the end. The farm (Erindale)was left  to the nephew".

Prior to this Michael O'Keeffe had arrived in Sydney in 1879 on board the Strathleven, aged 20 - also listed as a labourer from his native place - Coona, Co Cork, Ireland.

Michael Doyle O'Keeffe was sponsored by his cousin, Pat Dinan (?). His mother was also a Doyle & there are Doyle connections to be checked in the Southern NSW area. There is no record of his movement from Sydney to Queanbeyan area.

He is later listed as a grazier in Tharwa. Property listed as 'Fog Hill', Tharwa.

Michael O'Keeffe appears to have sold that property (under hardship) in 1904, but does not 'appear' again until property & residence listings in the south-west of Sydney between 1912 & 1915.

After that are the facts as gleaned from NSW BDM....

Michael O'Keeffe married Mary Gallagher in 1892.

Following children all born (registered at) Queanbeyan;

Elizabeth O'Keeffe - born 1893

Peter - born 1895 - died early - interned at Queanbeyan Cemetery

Joseph - born 1896 (cant track him at all?)

Catherine - born 1898

Michael O'Keeffe (Our grandfather) - born 1901

Mary - born 1904

Thank you,

Regards,  Ian

Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 13 June 1934:

SYDNEY, Thursday.  Before Justice Boyce in the Divorce Court to-day, Margaret Adelaide Kirchner, of Molonglo, Canberra, made application for the access to the three children by her previous husband, Ewen Gordon Bingley.

Bingley opposed the application, stating in an affidavit that when he returned from a shearing trip in 1931 he found that his wife had sold up all the furniture in the house at Queanbeyan and taken the three children and run away in his motor car with Thomas Vivian Kirchener.  It was 12 months before he located his wife.  Kirchener was committed for trial on a charge of stealing the car.  The children were running about without boots and were in tatters.  Subsequently, the husband and wife were divorced, and the woman married Kirchener.  An affidavit for the wife denied that the children had been in a neglected condition at Albury, and stated that Kirchener had been discharged on the car stealing charge.  His Honour granted Mrs Kirchener access every second Sunday af  ternoon, but directed that the children should not be brought into contact with Kirchener.  "There was no one else in the world to take the place of a mother," said His Honour.  "No matter how wicked the woman was the child could not believe that she had lost for her own children that love which only the mother could give."

Hi there Ian

My name's Matthew (currently in New Zealand) and I'm related via my mother (an Allcock/Alcock) to the family that Judy Winters wrote her book about.  My mother's Great great great grandfather, William, was Frederick Alcock's brother in Tardebigge.  I was there just a few days ago actually and my mother grew up in Redditch, just a few km from where Frederick lived prior to looking for his brother-in-law in NSW.

I am particularly interested in Judy's book from the 1990s, 'Tardebigge to Tantawanglo' and wonder if there's anyone at all that might have a copy.  With 7 or 8 generations of Alcock's I think this is fairly remote!

Many thanks

I notice the link to Aboriginal research on the website is broken.  Do you know where I can find information on Aboriginal families from the Tumut area in the 1850s?

Thanks in advance,  Annie

BTW this is a terrific research site - though I 'm sure you've been told that many times before!

Hi Annie,

Thank you for letting us know.  The link has been restored.  I suggest you try the Tumut Historical Society to seek the answers you want.

Hi Ian

I just went onto the George Reid family tree and most of it is no longer there and I can't find it anywhere else.  I clicked on my great grandfather Richard Reid (son of George) and it does not take you to his family (wife and children).  I had a lot of information there that I have probably lost now.  Maybe there is some why to access it that I am missing?

Regards, Kristine Howard, Cooma

Hi Kristine,

Please check again, it is all there again now.

Great thanks a lot Ian.

A Margaret Allcock was interested in the Pooley family her great grandmother Grace Stevens grew up with Fred and Emma Pooley at Summer Hill and the Royal Hotel in Cooma.  Emma was an Evans and Grace was her niece.

I am currently working on the Pooley history, the were quite significant on the Monaro, they had the coaches and mail contracts from Goulburn, Gundaroo, Queanbeyan, Cooma and Bombala and also Tarago, Bungendore, Braidwood, Majors Creek, Araluen and Moruya in the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s.  I think they probably will need to have their own separate family site.

Kristine

Thanks Christine,

Hello Ian,
I was just looking for a map of Gegedzerick and Berridale area, when an article appeared about the Monaro Pioneers, and I saw the name JAMES JACKSON JAMIESON.

He was my father's grandfather on his mother's side.

My father is REGINALD FREDERICK RUFF.  He is 94 years old.  He lives at The Entrance on the Central Coast, NSW.

History briefly:

Reginald Frederick Ruff's mother was ALICE MAY RUFF nee JAMIESON

MALCOLM McGREGOR b.15.3.1797 married ISABELLA McILCHERE b. 19.7.1815
Both from Campbeltown, Argyl, Scotland.  (Branches of this McILCHERE family still reside in Campbeltown).
Malcolm and Isabella married 1836, and on 24.8.1838 they sailed on the 541 ton barque the Portland for Australia, with their 2 small children Mary and James.
They were the first of this family to arrive in the Colonies.  They were free immigrants.

When they arrived Malcolm was 41 and Isabella was 23. They lived in Gegedzerick, and many of their descendants apparently still reside in the area.  They had 9 children, 2 named Isabella, who didn't reach adulthood.  Isabella died in 1852 aged 37 yrs, on the same day her youngest child, also Isabella, was born.  All buried in Gegedzerick cemetery.

Their 3rd child, Agnes McGregor b. 21.5.1840 married John Peter KOELLNER at Rocky Plain 1868.  He was born in Baden Baden, Germany, 1835, and arrived in Australia 1844.  Agnes died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Sidney Bottom, Cooma in 1906.

They had 8 children.  Their daughter MARY AGNES KOELLNER b.6.12.1869 married JAMES JACKSON JAMIESON at Cooma 29.8.1890.

They had 6 children:
* Alice May JAMIESON
Herbert James JAMIESON
Frederick JAMIESON
Ethel Mary JAMIESON
Cecil Wilfred JAMIESON
Doris Evelyn JAMIESON

Alice May married BERTIE FRAZER RUFF.  They had 2 sons Reginald Frederick (my father), and Ronald James (deceased).

As I said, dad is now 94 and doing fairly well for his age.
My husband and I are going to visit friends on the Mornington Peninsular and thought we would take a look at Gegedzerick and visit the cemetery as I know dad would be very interested.
Hence, as I said before, I was amazed when I came across the Monaro Pioneers article.

I will forward a photo of James Jackson JAMIESON.
Regards,  Jan Blenkinsop
Thank you,

Regards, Ian

Description: DEATH FROM FALLING INTO FIRE
A little girl, fifteen months old, daughter of Austin Tritton, came to her death on Wednesday under these circumstances : The child's parents reside next to the Manchester House, in Monaro-street. On Tuesday morning, about 10 o'clock, the child's mother placed her on the floor whilst talking to a neighbour at the door. The deceased shortly afterwards got to the fireplace, and fell in on some smouldering ashes, at the same time pulling over a can of cold tea, which fell into the fire and created a great steam. An elder sister, seeing what had occurred, threw a bucket of water on the deceased, believing her to be on fire. The child's mother took the deceased from the fire. Her clothes had not ignited, and she was but sligtly scalded and burned about the face, neck, and shoulders. On Wednesday morning, however, the child died from the effects of the shock to her system.  Queanbeyan Age.

I've just gone through my family name BEILEITER that you have on the website. I have dates that you have only the years and some dates that are different. Most of the dates I've got are via birth certificates or direct contact with the family so also some birth locations can be filled in. Would you like me to send you the differences that I have. Do you want the birth dates of the people that are still living?

Thanks,  Alan Beileiter

Hi Alan,

Yes please, any more detailed information you can provide would be much appreciated.  Yes also to the offer of complete dates for living people.  Our system will only display surname and initials for living people for privacy reasons even though we may have more complete details in the DB but for future researchers benefit it is essential that we have as much information as possible.

Please send the information and any copies of certificates to me and I will do the rest.

Regards,  Ian

Ian

I’ve attached  printed out sheets of all the Beileiter’s that I have in my family tree. I believe that I’ve covered all of them unless they have just been born. The BDM certificates that I have (about 80) is too big a file even zipped to send (about 80mb) so if you give me your address I’ll send a disc to you if you like. The sheets that I have sent only show 1 spouse and there are several with more than 1 so I’ll try to let you know them. If you find any mistakes I would appreciate you letting me know as I know there are others with slight differences than I have and in these cases I’ve tried to prove that what I’ve got is correct. If I can help in any other way please also let me know. One thing that I would like to know is what area does the Monaro cover from where to where as I’ve other relos that I’ve traced that could be in the area.

Thanks,  Alan

Hi Alan,

Would it be possible to get a descendants report for the Beileiter family starting with John George Beileiter (Johann Georg)?  That would make it much easier for me to work through it and make all the connections.

Regards,  Ian

Ian

I’ve attached a PDF file of Decedents of Johann Georg Beileiter let me know if this helps and if you would like any further info. If you can fill in any other info that I do not have please let me know. Also if you find any mistakes again please let me know it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,  Alan Beileiter

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the report, there is some conflicting information and quite a bit in the MP Database that you don't have.  I can send you a gedcom file of the new MP version of the Beileiter's if you require it.

This would appear to be contrary to the marriage recorded for Mary, to a B[asil] Honan. I believe that this Mary was the daughter of an M. E. Ryan, as per this article in the Windsor and District Gazette of 6 Jul 1955, which has Basil as the brother-in-law of the bridesgroom:

Windsor and Richmond Gazette (NSW : 1888 - 1954), Wednesday 6 July 1955, page 3

"District Wedding

RYAN BROWN

St. Monica's, Richmond, was chosen for the wedding recently of Pauline Rita, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. ('Bob') Brown, of the Lowlands, to Phillip Michael, only son of Mr. M. E. Ryan and the late Mrs. Ryan, of Nelligen. Rev. Father Madden officiated.

The bride looked charming as she entered the church on the arm of her father. Her frock featured a guipure lace bodice, with a high collar, and long sleeves pointed at the wrist. The skirt was of nylon net scattered with guipure lace flowers, each centred with a seed pearl. A pearl tiara held in place her three tiered finger-tip veil. She car ried a bouquet of white rose buds, tuberoses, lily-of-the-valley and mock orange. The bride was attended by a school friend, Mrs. Ken Perks (Glenorie), as matron of honour, gowned in blue hailspot nylon, and a cousin, Miss Betty Shepherd (Braid wood), as bridesmaid, gown ed in lilac hailspot nylon. With headdresses of nylon, they carried posies of cream roses.

The bridegroom was at tended by his brother-in-law, Mr. Basil Honan (Nelligen), as best man, and Mr. George Brown, as groomsman. Receiving the guests at the R.S.L. Hall, Richmond, the bride's mother chose a black green tie silk frock, with white, close-fitting hat, and black accessories, and a shoulder spray of cream rose buds and lily-of -the- valley. She was assisted by the bride groom's sister, wearing a wine wool suit, with black accessories and shoulder spray of cream rosebuds and slipper orchid. The beautiful wedding cake was made by Mrs. S. E. Brown, an aunt of the bride. Some guests travelled from as far as Nelligen, Bateman's Bay, Ulladulla, Kiama, Berry, Connell's Point, Ryde, Horns by and Gosford. Leaving for the honeymoon (spent touring by caravan to Queensland), the bride wore a ming blue velvet frock, with black accessories. The future home of the happy couple will be at Kiama."

I hope that this makes sense.

Thank you David,

Hi Ian, since my last note, I have discovered that John  Brodie is half brother to my William Henry Bryant, same mother, john being the older brother, another brother Benjamin was also transported for life Elizabeth Gore(brodie, bryant, condell) has 3 out of 4 sons transported, John Brodie, was a witness at William Henry Bryant's wedding,  how do I go about letting the family of john brodie know this information, I am quite happy to pass on all the info I have to them. also the 1st wife of Anthony Bryant was Mary Ann Weblyn, I miss that out before, have just got back into the Bryant side, hence all this information. John Brodie took the name of Bryant, he was charged under Bryant with the alias of Brodie

regards robin buck

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the information.  This email will be included in our next newsletter and hopefully that will reach the Brodie family.

Can you provide any details on Benjamin?

Regards,  Ian

Hi Ian,

I have a little more info Benjamin (born 1815)  was arrested and tried at Northampton Assizes on  11 July 1836 as was sent to Australia for life per ship Norfolk, he was tried and transported as Gore his mothers maiden name, but is seems he was a full brother to William  (born 1819), Thomas James ( born 1820 )  and Frederick Joseph (born 1823)

Frederick arrived in Australia 21 December 1858 on the ship Forest Monarch he was sponsored to come here by his brother Benjamin, on the ships documents Benjamin was given as Benjamin Bryant a brother of Singleton but in immigration Deposit Journals  he is Benjamin Gore

Elizabeth now had 3 sons as convicts in Australia

apparently John Bodie advertise in Sydney Morning Herald looking for Henry Brown, (ship Susan) William Henry Bryant (Henry Tanner) And Benjamin Gore (Norfolk) saying that if they contacted him they would hear something to their advantage, it seems that William did, as he was in the Monaro area not too long after, I  don't know who Henry Brown was.

this is all I have for now

Hi Ian,

I am looking for info on Charlie Wilkie, son of Annie Burgess. I can not find any proof Charlie was aboriginal other than on his death certificate and as you know this can come down to the opinion of the person giving the info at the time (in this case his son). Is it possible to find the person who put this information up on the web page to see if they have actual proof.

As a family member I have followed through with this information but cant seem to find any verification any where. The name Wilkie doesnt appear to be known among the aboriginal people of the area either and it has been suggested the original Charlie Wilkie may have not been from the tribe stated on your web page.

Its a stretch I know but I always figure asking again and again cant hurt because one day someone might actually have some info they are willing to share.

Thank you for your time on this.

Description: From 'The Canberra Times', 5 January 1944:

MOORE-BOOTH.  St Johns Church of England Canberra was the scene of a pretty wedding on Saturday, December 18, when Thelma, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs C H Moore, Ainslie, was married to Geoffrey Charles youngest son of Mr and Mrs W Booth, the Causeway.  The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Robertson.  The bride who entered the church on the arm of her father chose white cloque cut on classical lines and trimmed with silver.  The long silk net veil trimmed with lace was held in place with a topknot of Christmas lilies and orange blossom.  She carried a bouquet of Christmas lilies and carnations.  The bridesmaids were Misses Laurel and Lois Booth, twin sisters of the bridegroom.  They wore pink figured net over taffeta.  Their shoulder length pink tulle veils were held in place with matching flowers.  They carried bouquets of blue and pink delphiniums.  The brother of the bride Mr W Moore was best man, and Mr Ken Mullins groomsman.  Mrs Robertson presided at the organ.  The reception was held at Wilkie's Tearooms Manuka, where the bride's mother, wearing an ensemble of blue figured silk with matching shoulder spray, received the guests.  She was assisted by Mrs Booth who wore a black ensemble with a shoulder spray of mauve sweet peas.  The honeymoon was spent in Sydney.  For her travelling frock, the bride selected a dusty pink Canadian crepe ensemble with white accessories.
