ADAMINABY , OLD ADAMINABY AND DALGETY CEMETERY RECORDS

From: Bill Leane

Sent: Friday, 3 July 2015 9:42 AM

Subject: Adaminaby , Old Adaminaby and Dalgety cemetery records.

Hi,

This note is to advise that the Lake Eucumbene (Adaminaby and Old Adaminaby), and Dalgety Chambers of Commerce have agreed to a joint project to make the cemetery records of those districts available on a searchable website. This facility will have the best available council records, and a plot location tool to enable a precise location for the selected plot.  We will include a capacity for corrections etc, and an associated web-page for the placement of stories, photos, and documents related to the graves and internees, for use by family reunions, etc.

We hope that this facility will enable modern generation to visit and take an interest  these historic locations, and provide a depth of engagement with place and personal connection that has not been available in the past.

We have many visitors to our cemetery who are frustrated at the poor access to grave information, especially the location of unmarked graves.

I am hopeful that we may be able to reach a wider community of interest with the support of your site. You may wish to offer advice on entering this undertaking.

Thanks, Bill Leane

Treasurer,  Lake Eucumbene Chamber of Commerce

NATIONAL LIBRARY OF IRELAND: Exciting new resource for Irish Genealogy announced

This is pretty amazing for anyone wishing to research their Irish family history. The entire collection of Catholic parish register microfilms held by the National Library of Ireland will be made available online – free – from the 8th of July 2015 onwards. On that date, a dedicated website will go live with over 390,000 digital images of the microfilm reels on which the parish registers are recorded. The National Library of Ireland has been working to digitise the microfilms for over three years under its most ambitious digitisation programme to date.

The parish register records are considered the single most important source of information on Irish family history prior to the 1901 Census. Dating from the 1740s to the 1880s, they cover 1,091 parishes throughout the island of Ireland, and consist primarily of baptismal and marriage records.

Subject: Grant Reunion

Hello David,
I was pleased to receive your email. Thank you for the promotion - I have received emails from descendants who accessed the information on the Monaro Pioneers website.
Are you planning to attend the reunion?

I am hoping that this reunion will afford us the chance to record details of our family lines to the present day children. We appreciate the opportunity the website affords us to spread the word so that hopefully we will achieve this task.
My apologies for the time lapse between emails but we have been refining the plans for the reunion.
I am sending two attachments with this email.
The first is the planned program for the Grant Reunion on the 3rd, 4th and 5th November 2015 at Wyndham NSW.
Please circulate this information to as many descendants as you have contact with. Also if you have any documents on the Grants, which you would be willing to share, please bring it on the weekend. We plan to have a copier (as original documents are precious) and the copies would be added to the displays.
Work on the grave of Henry Grant at the Wyndham Cemetery is planned and will be dedicated on this weekend and the second attachment is a request for donations for the cost of this work.
Is it possible to add both these attachments to the web site?

Hello David

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sue Zammit and I live in Gisborne, Victoria. My fathers mothers family were the Smith family from Braidwood NSW. The father was Joseph Smith Born in 1843 in Pinxton, Derbyshire England. He married in 1867 in New Zealand to Mary Jane Granger She was born in 1853 in Surrey, England. They went on to have 16 children. The moved to Braidwood New South Wales, Australia in 1891 and Mary Jane went on to have another3 children, one of which was my grandmother Ethel Dorothea Louisa Smith. One of the Smith girls married into the Willoughby family that was settled in Braidwood. That is where the reunion starts. The Willoughby reunion is to be held at the RSL Club in Braidwood on 26,27,28 Sept 2015 There is a Facebook page under Willoughby reunion. I was wondering if you may be able to put a notice on your web site adverting for any descendents of John Willoughby and Mary Ann Mills. She was a half cast aboriginal. I have loads of information on the whole family if your are interested. I can be contacted at email suzyq14@bigpond.com There should be a very healthy turnout as the Willoughby clan is huge.

Many thanks for your time, hope to hear back from you .

LAWLESS/ THOMPSON

From: Kevin O'Brien
Sent: Tuesday, 30 June 2015 11:13 PM
Subject: John Lawless/Sophia Thompson Marriage circa 1848

Hi Ian,

I have been perusing the Monaro Pioneers website and am seeking further details of the claimed marriage between John Francis Lawless (I 14463) and Sophia Thompson (I 14464).

This is recorded as being at Little River, near Bredbo, but the date is uncertain (either 1848 or as one of the notes claims 1842).  But I note there is no formal reference attached, and I have been unsuccessful with NSW BDM in trying to track this down as there does not appear to be a formal record.

I would appreciate any guidance you can give me as to how the Pioneers were able to track this down, a copy of any documentation you may hold (or are aware of) and the level of confidence you have in the information.

The importance of this record relates to the assertion in the Pioneer's data base that Sophia Thompson's descendants (via her "marriage" to John Lawless) can trace their heritage back to the First Fleet convict Jane Langley (who married the marine Thomas Chipp).

Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Regards, Kevin O'Brien

Hi Kevin,

The information we have was supplied by a number of contributors and some of their contact details are listed on the Pioneers Index page for John Francis Lawless.  The absence of a BDM Index reference does not necessarily invalidate the union as many "marriages" were defacto or common law in the early settlement days due to the absence of any formal authority or religious presence.  On that Pioneers Index page is displayed copies of death certificates which clearly show that Sophia Thompson was the wife of John Francis Lawless.

McNAMARA

Proposed Change: Family: McNamara,  Michael/McNamara,  Mary (F32648)

Tree: Eden Monaro Pioneers

Link:   http://monaropioneers.com/TNG/familygroup.php?familyID=F32648&tree=MP

Description: I have a Michael and Mary Mcnamara in my tree. They were married 13 Jan 1850 in queanbeyan NSW. Could this be the same couple?  They are listed here as marrying one year later 13 jan 1851. They are also listed as arriving on the "Sarah" in the August of 1851 on this site which is after they were supposedly married in Queanbeyan.

I have their daughters birth certificate registration 1857/010570. Her name was Bridget and she was born 24 Feb 1857 in Woden. Her parents are listed as Michael Mcnamarra(farmer) aged 45 and Mary Mcnamarra (nee  Mcnamarra)aged 30.

Children listed are Patrick aged 5 and Catherine aged 3. This Patrick would have been 44 in 1895 which is the same age as the Patrick who hung himself in that year in Rosedale near London Bridge Burra.

I hope you can help me. I really want to find the real Mary and Michael.

Warm regards and many thanks,  Donna Cash

Hi Donna,

Obviously our records are incorrect, the Mary McNamara who arrived on the "Sarah" could not be the wife of this Michael McNamara.  I will amend our records accordingly. This does not help you in your quest unfortunately.  Do you have a copy of the marriage certificate for Michael and Mary to confirm the date of 1850?  The BDM Index shows 1851 and Ancestry.Com has a number of Trees that show 1851.  These trees however, also show the family in SA so I don't have any faith in their accuracy.  Any additional information and documents you could supply would be most appreciated.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian

I have just returned from a three day trip to Canberra and was able to have a copy all the  McNamara files from the Queanbeyan library with the help of Brigid whitbread who works there. I will have a good look and see if I can work out the correct Mary, michael, etc... And let you know what I come up with. Did you have any luck at your end? Thanks for everything you do.

Kind regards, Donna Cash

Hi Donna,

I will look forward to all the exciting new discoveries you are going to make, your help is much appreciated.  Apart from amending our records,  I have made no further progress at this end unfortunately.

HARTIGAN

On 21/06/2015 20:54, Janise Farrell wrote:

Hello,

I am writing to suggest changes to the entry for Bridget Hartigan, whom you currently have listed as being born about 1820.

I have received Bridget's death certificate and it must put an end to the erroneous assumption that Bridget was the daughter of Dudley Hartigan and Mary Anne Akers.  The breakthrough came when I realised Bridget was young enough to marry again after Edward Moore's death (which we know, thanks to a court case described in The Goulburn Herald/County of Argyle Advertiser, was around 1858). I found that Bridget married Denis Healy in 1864.  Bridget continued to live in Coolringdon with Denis Healy.  (A Denis Healey, shepherd, is listed as living in Coolringdon, Cooma, in Greville's Post Directory of 1872.) Denis Healy died in 1886.

Bridget died on 9 April, 1907 in Dry Plain.  Her death was registered by her son, William Moore of Dry Plain.  Her name is registered as Bridget Healey.

According to the details given by her son, Bridget was 88 years of age at the time of her death.  This means she was born about 1819/1820 (1819 seems more likely when both her marriage and death certificates are considered).  Her father was Patrick Hartigan, a farmer. Her mother's details were 'unknown'.  Bridget was born in County Clare, Ireland, and came to the colony of NSW in about 1839.

Her spouses were given as Edward Moore and Denis Healey.  Her children given as (living) William 60, Mary J. 58, Eliza 53, Anne 51, Edward 48;

(deceased) two females.

The death certificate states that Bridget died of haemorrhage, senile arteriosclerosis.  She was buried on April 12, 1907, in the Roman Catholic section of Mittagong Cemetery.

I have also received the marriage certificate of Bridget Hartigan and Edward Moore. They were married July 14, 1845 in the Church of England of Colamyong (near present day Cathcart, and given in death certificate as Cathcart).  Edward Moore is listed as a bachelor, but Bridget Hartigan as a widow.  Bridget's earlier marriage doesn't appear to have been known to or acknowledged by William in the registration of his mother's death (which does raise unfortunate questions about whether Hartigan was Bridget's maiden name or the name of her first husband).

By the way, I have no information on the McCarthy name currently given for the first husband in the Monaro Pioneers site.

I was always suspicious of the claim (made across the Internet) that Bridget Hartigan was the daughter of Dudley Hartigan and Mary Anne Akers.  There is no birth certificate for her, and there was no line for her in the 1828 census for the Hartigan family.  The only link was that the Hartigan girls moved to the Monaro.  As shown in Bridget's death certificate, Bridget immigrated from Clare in 1839.  It is disappointing to lose a First Fleet 'ancestor' in Thomas Akers, but it is far better to research the right family!

There is a record for a Bridget Hartigan, born 1820, who arrived from County Clare on 16 March, 1839 (on the Alquis, with her brother Michael).  The 'unmarried' in 'unmarried passengers' has the 'un'

crossed out (recall that Bridget was a widow at her marriage to Edward), yet she is listed with the single women.  It is all very tantalising.  However, as the father's name was given there as John, I can't be confident that the record can be attached to our Bridget Hartigan.  Clearly, an important lesson that must be learned is that it is very important to be careful and avoid making tenuous links - or blindly accepting tenuous links.

Kind regards,  Janise Farrell (nee Shanley)

Thank you Janise,  we can add a copy of your certificates to Bridget's record if you care to contribute them.

Regards,  Ian

Hi Warwick,

Looks like you have uncovered a new family that we did not have, not much I can add to your conclusions unfortunately.

Regards,  Ian

Hi again
I knew the Ginn name had a connection that was sitting in the back of my head:

Blundells Cottage

The stone dwelling, now known as Blundells Cottage, was built in 1860 to house Duntroon's head ploughman, William Ginn, and his family (1860-1874). It was then occupied by George Blundell, a Duntroon bullock driver and his family (1874-1933) and finally by shepherd Harry Oldfield and his wife Alice (1933-1958). When Harry died in 1942, Alice took in boarders. This included the Sainsbury family, who lived at the cottage between 1958 and 1961.

Daughter:
 Miss Gertrude Ginn

One of Canberra's oldest residents, Miss Gertrude Ginn, 87, died recently at the home of her niece, Mrs. J. Sharpe, at Banks Street, Westridge.
The deceased had a long association with the district, being born on September 21, 1865, at a cottage now known as Blundells farm, near St. John's Church.
The old home was built by George Campbell, of Duntroon, in 1862, for the father of the deceased, William Ginn, who worked the adjoining river land before selecting property, later known as Canberra Park, north of Canberra. This property is still used for grazing by his grandson, Mr. J. H Ginn.
Following the death of her father approximately 50 years ago, Miss Ginn managed the estate and cared for her invalid mother.
With the establishment of the A.C.T. and the resumption of farm land, Miss Ginn moved to the Berrima district, in the 1920's to a small property which she farmed until 1941, when she joined her niece, Mrs. A. McBain, at Kurrajong. In 1944 she returned to Canberra, spending her remaining days with Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe.

OBITUARY.
MR. WILLIAM GINN, AGED 83.
From week to week we are called upon to chronicle the demise of the old, old residents of this district, whose history dates back to the pioneering days of the district. One by one they answer to their call and pass away off this terrestrial sphere making room for the younger generation to share the worries of the world. Last Friday morning the subject of this obituary notice added one more to those many old residents whose death it has been our painful duty to report during the past few weeks.
Mr. Ginn was among the first residents of Majura, and we question whether he was not the oldest identity living in and around that neighbourhood. Deceased, during his sojourn of about 50 years in the district had won for himself the esteem and respect of his neighbours, with whom he was always on amicable terms.
A man with a constitution of iron, Mr. Ginn until recent years was quite ignorant of ill-ness, and did not anticipate his end was so near, despite his advanced stage in life. For thirty seven days prior to his end he existed on a morsel of burnt biscuits with brandy and water, and during the last six or seven days not a bite of any food touched his lips.
Deceased leaves a widow and four children to mourn their loss. The sons, Messrs. Walter and Henry Ginn, are both farming at Majura. Of the daughters, Mrs. Lawson resides at Moss Vale, and Miss Gertrude Ginn is residing at home. The remains were interred in the Canberra cemetery on last Saturday afternoon, to where a large concourse of relatives and friends gathered.

 Pioneers' Reunion At "Canberra Park"

Pioneering days in the Canberra district were pleasantly recalled when a large gathering of relatives and friends assembled at "Canberra Park," Federal Highway, to honour Mrs. Elizabeth Ginn on the occasion of her 70th birthday.
The home in which the celebration was held, now occupied by Mrs.Ginn's elder son, James, is that to which she was brought as a bride by her husband, the late Mr. Henry Thomas Ginn, more than 40 years ago.
Their marriage at St. John's Church, Canberra, at the dawn of this century, united two well known pioneering families of the district. Mr. Henry   Ginn's father, Mr.William Ginn, was among the first settlers to come into this part, and he established himself at Canberra Lodge, just past where Canberra Park now stands. Mrs. Ginn was Miss Elizabeth Winter, daughter of Mr. John Winter, who, after first working for Mr. George Campbell at Duntroon, later established himself on the property known as Red Hill.
Mrs. Ginn's two sons and two daughters and eight grand-children were among the 40 persons who joined in the birthday feast, and in toasting her future health and happiness.
The sons are Mr. James H. Ginn, Canberra Park, and Mr. William J. Ginn, of Braddon. The daughters are Mrs. A. Trounson, North Ainslie, and Mrs. A. C. Appleby, Federal Highway.
Also present at the party were two sisters of the late Mr Ginn Mrs. Agnes Lawson, aged 87, and Miss   Gertrude Ginn, 81, both of whom reside at Westridge.
Messages were received from Mrs. Ginn's brothers and sisters, Mr. David Winter of Yass, and Mr. William Winter of Parramatta, Mrs. I. Shumack of Kenilworth, Yass, and Mrs. S. Shumack of Peakhurst.
The Canberra Times, Tuesday 21 May 1946 page 2
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Death Of Mrs. Elizabeth Ginn
The death occurred on Thursday of Mrs. Elizabeth Ginn, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A. Appleby Federal Highway.
Mrs. Ginn, who was 85, was born a few miles from the place where she died, on property then known as Red Hill and now know as Gungaderra.
She was the daughter of the late John Winter and Jamima Winter. The late Mrs. Ginn was married to Henry Thomas Ginn in St. John's in 1899 by the Rev. Pierce Galliard Smith, and lived in the district all her life.
Surviving her are four children, Ethel (Mrs. A. Trounson, of Ainslie), Elizabeth Lillian (Mrs. A. Appleby, Federal Highway), James Henry, of Spring Range and William John, of "Dungaroon." Mulligan's Flat.
The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, in St. John's graveyard, following a service in St. John's.
The Canberra Times, Saturday 4 June 1960 page 2

That will do unless you want further updates.

Hi Warwick,

Well done, comprehensively nailed it!  Check the website to see the Immigration list for William Ginn and Family.

Hi Ian (& David)

Having just read the latest Newsletter (thanks to you both for the great job you do) I noticed “Cheryl” who is tending her ill mother, looking for info on FRANCIS. Your reply and help to her was encouraging and helpful, to say the least. You mentioned ‘transcript’ in your reply to her. I wonder if you could reiterate that to her and mention the likes of Marilyn Rowan and Joy Murrin and inform Cheryl that the transcripts are so much CHEAPER than NSW BDM certificates (unless a certificate is required for legal purposes). Marilyn Rowan has ‘happy hour’ (evenings) and during June having Saturday Madness when the transcripts are cheaper than normal prices. Cheryl can also alleviate the cost by requesting just certain information required.

We are all feeling ‘the pinch’ and have to help each other where we can.  Happy ghost hunting to all.

Keep warm, regards,  Lesley (Qld)

Thank you Lesley,

TWYFORD.--In loving memory of my dear husband, James, who departed this life at Korumburra, Vic., February 5, 1912, aged 23 years.

It is not the tears at the moment shed, When the cold turf has just been laid o'er him, That can tell how beloved was the soul that has fled, Or how deep in our hearts we deplore him.

'Tis the tears through many a long day wept, Though alive by his losses all shaded; 'Tis the sad remembrance, so fondly kept, When all lesser griefs are faded, Inserted by his loving wife and children, Isabel Twyford, Catherine Hill Bay.

In Memorium.

TVYFORD.--In loving memory of our dear brother, James. who died, Korumuburra, Victoria, February 5, 1912, aged 23 years. Also, Robert, beloved brother of above, who died in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, August 17, 1903, aged 22 years.

Too far away your graves to see, But not too far to think of thee.

Inserted by their loving brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Harrlet Twyford, C.H. Bay.
