MICHAEL McNAMARA of the Commercial Hotel, is the son of two of the earliest settlers in Queanbeyan. Born in Ireland in the year 1849, he arrived in Sydney with his parents while yet an infant. He was educated in the district and on leaving school became a farmer and grazier. In 1884 Mr. McNamara became the owner of the Commercial Hotel, of which he has since been the conductor. He was made an alderman at the first municipal elections of Queanbeyan in 1887 and has since been twice re-elected. He was created a member of the local branch of the Catholic Guild, and has held the office for many years; is a member of the local Hospital Committee, also of the Jockey Club and various other institutions. He is such a worthy resident and still continues to do his best to advance the industries of the place of his adoption. The Commercial Hotel is one of the oldest-established businesses in Queanbeyan, and under the able management of Mr. McNamara, has become one of the centres of trade.

Served as a Marksman in German Naval expedition to view Solar Eclipse.
He jumped ship in 1894 or 1895 in Sydney and claimed to have been interned as an enemy alien during WWI. Subject to a number of standard Security investigations during WW2, as a potential enemy alien but cleared early in the War of being a danger to National Security.
Marriage: Father was Bernhardt NOFFZ and mother was Alma STUWE on his 1st marriage certificate and Ulma Steive on his 2nd marriage certificate.
He married Emily Maud McTERNAN in 1901 at Michelago NSW. He married Leila ROTH in 1921.
Theodore Noffs claimed that his home in Nemitz was near to Bismark's Holiday Home. He ran away to sea and served in the German component of a joint US - British - German Naval expedition to observe a solar eclipse in the "South Seas".
He jumped ship in Sydney Australia in 1894 or 1895 and went to Kalgoorlie goldfields in West Australia. In 1901 he married a grazier's daughter, Emily McTernan, in Michelago, NSW.
The couple seemed to have spent some time on a farm near Bermagui on the south coast of NSW.
He made a living selling pianos and pianolas throughout country NSW and supplemented his income by hand colouring portrait photos. He claimed to have been interned as an illegalenemy alien during the WW1 yet his wife died in childbirth in 1917. After WW1 he returned to travelling life and sold radios to property owner in the country areas of NSW
He married again to a Leila Roth in 1921. Leila was a descendant of German settlers near Mudgee NSW. In WW2 he was subject to a number of security investigations due to supposed unpatriotic activities.
