Inquest: Thomas Lynch
Owing to the courtesy of Mr. B. Lipecomb, coroner for the district, in refusing us a copy of the depositions taken at the inquest held upon the remains of the late Mr. Thomas Lynch, we are unable to present our readers with official particulars thereof. But from what we can learn, it appears that the deceased had partaken of a hearty supper and retired to rest about 10 o’clock on Saturday night, 9th of August; Mrs Lynch retired about an hour afterwards, when the deceased complained of being unwell, and expressed a desire to go to the next room and lay on the sofa, which he did. Mrs. Lynch noticing a change in the deceased, called one of her sons, who immediately attended, and the deceased called for some tea. The young man set about making some tea as quickly as possible, but in the interim, the deceased began to froth from the mouth, and before the desired beverage was prepared had expired. The day before his death, he (deceased) was at Mr. M. Keating’s the greater part of the day, and seemed in his usual lively spirits.

Obituary:
The Late Thomas Lynch
In our last issue, we gave a passing notice of the late Mr Thomas Lynch, who departed this life suddenly at his residence, Clairmont, Gegedzerick in the district of Manaro on the night of Saturday last. We now proceed to lay before our readers as detailed particulars of the life of the deceased as we have been able to gather. The deceased was born in the county of Westmeath, Ireland, in the year of 1812 where he remained under parental care till he reached the age of manhood. In the commencement of the year 1835, when at the age of 23, he took an active interest in the party politics of Ireland, and became “suspected” of insurrectionary motives. A few months afterwards, by means of a girl named Mary Morris, who had been bribed to give false evidence against him, he was impeached, and upon her evidence against him, he was seized upon in his father’s dwelling-house by a strong body of police, and taken into custody. He was first tried for treasonable offences at Castle Pollard, and the same night sent, under strong escort, to the county goal at Mullingar here he was placed upon his trial, on the first day of the Assizes, before a grand jury, charged with treason and abetting insurrection. Perjury and bribery effectively did their job and Thomas Lynch was transported for life. The gist of the evidence upon, which he was apprehended that he is in company with one hundred other men, visited, at night, the residence of the master of the girl Mary Morris with the intention of abstracting firearms there from: but his relatives now on Manaro, and who were at the dwelling-house of the deceased father on the night he is said to have been connected with the alleged marauding party, deny the truth of the girl Morris’s statement. However, in 1835 he went from his native land, he arrived in New South Wales in 1836. Before proceeding further, it may be stated that so great an interest did the late Mr. Thomas Lynch take in the party politics of his native land, and so esteemed was he by his fellow-countrymen, that he was unanimously chosen captain of a body of over one thousand picked men. On his arrival in New South Wales, he was assigned to Colonel Blomfield, of Denham Court, near Camden, who found the exile to be, in every respect, an industrious and trustworthy man. In fact, so perfect was the confidence of Colonel Blomfield in him that he (the colonel) sent him to Manaro to manage the pastoral property at Coolamatong, where the late Mr. Thomas Lynch resided for many years. In 1851 he married Miss Ellen Cane, a native of Limerick, Ireland, and he settled down to a steady hard working life at Coolamatong, still in the employ of the Messrs. Blomfield, As soon as the Lands Acts of 1861 came into operation, he quitted the employment of the Messrs. Blomfield, and availed himself of the provisions of the Alienation Act. By dint of perseverance, industry, and upright conduct, he gradually got on till he became a substantial yeoman, and at the time of his death, was possessor of nearly 1000 acres of freehold land. It would be invidious on our part to attempt a resume of his life on the Manaro; for it is well known to every resident in the district that we have no need to add one word in exposition thereof. If a political battle for the greatest good to the greatest number was fought on the Manaro, he was to the front among the Liberals, as thoroughly Australian in his views as ever he had been devoted to the country from which he had been expatriated. We can say, in conclusion, that his loss, as a warm-hearted friend and good counsellor, will be missed by many on the Manaro; and the absence of his cheery voice and lively manner will long be fly by members of his own class. He was, in every respect, that what was termed the noblest work of God- an honest man; and it will be long before his place is filled in the district. His last appearance in the political world was on the occasion of the contest between Mr A. Moriarty and Mr W. Grahame for the representation of the electorate of Manaro in Parliament. Those who watched the contest will not fail to remember how manfully he spoke out in the cause of Liberalism at Buckley’s Crossing and other places wither he accompanied Mr Moriarty; nor will it be forgotten by those who attended the dinner given to the defeated candidate, on the 16th March 1872. how bravely he (the late Mr Lynch) accepted the defeat of his candidate. On that occasion , he occupied the Vice-Chair; and when proposing the health of Mr. Moriarty he was warmly applauded for the open-spoken manner in which he referred to the contestant particularly so when he said: “ They had all honourably fought the battle, and he knew when the time came they would fight it again.” Later in the evening, a little episode in which the deceased took a prominent part will not be readily accepted by his friends or those who attended the dinner. It was when a few turbulent spirits had endeavoured to create disorder that the late Mr Lynch, rising from his seat, and seeking the chair upon which he sat threatening to “Tipperary” the disorderly few, and that, restored comparative quiet.

Notes: LYNCH, THOMAS (JOSEPH) (1860-1921), soldier, was born on 11 September 1860 at Coolamatong near Cooma, New South Wales, son of Thomas Lynch, storekeeper, and his wife Ellen, née Kane, both from Ireland. After attending St Patrick's College, Goulburn, he enlisted in the New South Wales Artillery on 18 January 1879. By 1885 he had been promoted sergeant and he served during the Sudan War with the field battery of the New South Wales Contingent. After training on 9-pounder guns issued in Suakin the battery moved to Handoub on 17 April and until returning to Suakin on 14 May provided mounted men to accompany the 20th Hussars on patrol. On 17 May the contingent left for Australia and at Colombo Lynch was disembarked for treatment of enteric fever.
In 1886 Sergeant Lynch topped the first course at the newly established School of Gunnery at Middle Head, Sydney. From February to July 1887 he was an assistant instructor there and qualified as master gunner, 3rd class. He married Louisa Maria Johnson at Watson's Bay on 14 February 1888; they had no children. On 1 January 1894 he was promoted master gunner, 1st class (warrant officer) and was appointed assistant fire-master, New South Wales Field Artillery Regiment.
After the outbreak of the South African War Lynch was commissioned second lieutenant in the New South Wales Citizens' Bushmen and on 1 April 1900 was promoted lieutenant. On 13 July he was transferred to the New Zealand Battery of the Rhodesian Field Force. He was invalided home in October but in April 1901 returned to rejoin the Citizens' Bushmen. Allotted to the Royal Army Service Corps, he was promoted captain and appointed transport officer of Colonel St George Henry's column. In August he was invalided home again and on 14 January 1902 became assistant fire-master, and in October regimental sergeant major, Royal Australian Artillery (New South Wales). From 1 June he was quartermaster, with the rank of honorary lieutenant, on the Administrative and Instructional Staff. Promoted honorary major on 8 May 1913, from July he was adjutant, 6th Field Artillery Brigade.
When World War I began Lynch was appointed brigade major, 2nd Light Horse Brigade, Australian Imperial Force, on 17 September 1914. The brigade embarked from Egypt on 16 May 1915 for service on Gallipoli; on 10 June Lynch was seconded for duty as camp commandant, 1st Division Headquarters, but on 23 June he was admitted to hospital with conjunctivitis. He remained on Gallipoli, through the heavy fighting in August, until the evacuation to Egypt in December. Suffering from general debility, Lynch embarked for Australia on 3 March 1916 and on 14 April was discharged from the A.I.F. He then resumed the appointment of adjutant, 6th Field Artillery Brigade, Australian Military Forces and from 1 January 1918 he was temporarily brigade major, 5th Infantry Brigade Area. He was promoted major in 1919 and retired in 1920 as an honorary lieutenant-colonel.
Lynch died of pernicious anaemia on 30 November 1921 and was buried in the Catholic section of Randwick cemetery. He is remembered for his leadership, training and administrative qualities in war and peace and for active service spanning Australian involvement in three wars.

Mother and Child Drowned.
News was received in Cooma on Wednesday of a melancholy drowning accident at Little Plain, near Coolamatong, by which a well-known and highly respected resident, Mrs Primmer, and one of her daughters, were drowned. It appears that the little girl, six years of age, and her elder sister went to a water-hole on the selection in front of the house - a pool whose depth never seems to have been suspected. The younger child, in playing about, fell in, and though her sister tried to drag her out, it must have been quickly drowned. The sister, naturally failed to realise the full danger, or even that the child was probably then beyond rescue, ran to the house and told her mother of what had occurred. The poor woman at once rushed to the waterhole in a distracted state, and not finding any trace of her child’s body, began a wild search in the water reckless of consequences to herself. Suddenly she got beyond her depth, and as she was unable to swim she too was drowned. There was no help nigh at the time, Mr. Primmer being absent from home delivering wheat in Cooma. Later on Mr. George Tasker and a nephew of Mrs. Primmer called at the house, and from the information gathered from the children they went to the creek. Here they made a search and found the bodies of the mother and child at the bottom of the waterhole. Our correspondent at Berridale writes that quite a gloom has been cast over the community by the sad affair, for Mrs. Primmer was well known and highly esteemed. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Owen Lynch of Bulgundra. She leaves a widower and a large family of young children, who have thus been suddenly bereft, and left to mourn their irreparable loss. A magisterial inquiry will be held by Mr. Love, P.M. and Coroner, on Saturday, as Mr. Hepburn, Coroner for the District, is away. An order for burial was given, however, and the funeral took place to-day (Thursday). It was largely attended by sympathisers from far and near.

THE MELANCHOLY DROWNING ACCIDENT.
MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY ON THE BODIES.
THE INFANTS PITIFUL STORY.
Mr. M.S. Love, P.M., and Coroner, held a magisterial inquiry at Little Plain, near Berridale, on Saturday on the bodies of Mary Primmer, and her daughter Margaret Ann Primmer, who were drowned in a water-hole near the house of Phillip Primmer.
Phillip Primmer, farmer, deposed that Mary Primmer was his wife, 27 years of age and Margaret Primmer, his daughter, 6 years of age; he last saw them alive on Monday 27th March, when he left home for Middlingbank; he returned next day at 9 p.m. and saw his wife and daughter lying dead in the house; the hole in which they drowned was used for obtaining water for the house; it was unfenced; his wife left no property and had no separate estate.
Senior Constable Filan deposed that when it was reported at Buckley’s Crossing that Mrs. Primmer and her child had drowned he came to Little Plain and saw the bodies; he reported the death to the Coroner; the water-hole was about 7ft deep, and from 6ft to 8 ft wide.
Julia Maud Primmer, a sister of the deceased Margaret Primmer, stated: My sister went to the water-hole for a teapot of water and my mother went down and fell in after her; this was before dinner; mother was in the house when Annie (Margaret) went for the water; I went with Annie to get the water at the creek and she fell in; I sung out to mother and came half way up to tell; my mother went to the hole and went in; I did not see them come out of the water; I told Esther Tiller about it; nobody else was at home but Sonny (brother, aged 2 years) and Baby (sister aged 15 months).
Mary Ann Tiller, wife of John Tiller, deposed that she lived about 300 yards from the Primmers, at Little Plain; at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday 28th March she saw Mrs. Primmer alive; witness left for Coolamatong about two miles distant and returned about 4.30 p.m., when her daughter told her of the disaster; she made search and found the bodies, on which she sang out, and Tasker came from her son’s place; the bodies were then taken from the hole; witness identified the bodies after death.
Mary Esther Primmer, aged 13, daughter of William Primmer (niece to the late Mrs. Primmer) deposed that little Maude Primmer had told her of the accident; she went to the creek and saw the three children sitting on the bank; Maude, Stephen Emanuel, and the baby were all on the bank; it was then that Maude told her that her mother and Annie were in the water; witness could see no sign of the bodies; she told her mother and afterwards the bodies were taken out; she brought the children away from the water.
George Tasker, labourer, deposed that he was passing Little Plain on Tuesday afternoon 28th March, and saw the deceased, Mrs. Primmer, at her house; she appeared to be all right; he went to Wm. Primmer’s about half a mile away and when returning about 5 o’clock he heard Mrs. Tiller sing out that she believed Mrs. Primmer was drowned; he went to the waterhole and searched for the body with a stick, but could not find it; he then brought William Primmer, and they succeeded iin bringing out Mrs. Primmer’s corpse; the child’s body was next found; both were fully dressed; the bank of the hole was sloping on one side and steep on the other; he saw no footprints of any one slipping in; he reported the matter to the police; the bodies were recovered at 7.15 p.m.
Mr. Love found that Margaret Annie Primmer was accidentally drowned on 28th March, and that her mother, Mary Primmer, was drowned at the same time and place whilst attempting to rescue her daughter.

Obituary James Flanagan
"Though not unexpected, Narooma received a shock when word got around on Friday afternoon last, 12th April, that Jim Flanagan had peacefully passed away. Born at Wamban, Moruya in 1870 he came to Narooma first in 1890 when his parents had the Narooma Hotel. As a young man he became prominent in athletics, winning prizes at Bermagui, Dry River, Narooma, Bodalla and Moruya. In 1904 he went to New Zealand to take up farming. In 1908 he returned to collect his wife-to-be, Eliza Lynch, of Dalgety. He did well in New Zealand and in 1923 retired to live in New Plymouth where he reared three sons; Harry, deceased, Bill of Narooma and Albert (Brother Vincent), teaching at Marist Brothers High School at Kogarah. For the sake of his wife's health he returned to NSW in 1928, finally settling at Narooma, where his wife predeceased him by ten years. Since Mrs Flanagan's death his sister, Mrs Coman, has cared for the family and was in constant attendance right till the end. Mr Flanagan's health commenced to fail two years ago and he has been subject to severe heart seizures ever since. He was a wonderful father and did all in his power to give his boys some of the advantages he himself was denied in his youth. He was buried at Narooma at 2.30 pm on Saturday, Rev Fr McGee officiating."
