Relatives' Desperate Effort - Nurse Malone's Death

Happy and bright, Nurse Lily Malone last week was moving about the Kurri Hospital, looking after the patients assigned to her care, cheering one here, soothing the pain of another there, and generally earning for herself the reputation of being the bright, cheery girl that she was .

Early on Sunday morning she passed away to her long last rest, while some where on the long, rough road that leads from Sydney, her sisters, racked with anxiety, were rushing to her bedside as fast as the ingenuity of man could bring them.

Taken ill on Thursday last, nobody for a moment thought that there was anything serious, and it was not until late on Saturday that any idea of the real truth was realised. When it became apparent, however, that there was little hope of her recovery, the Matron set about the almost impossible task of notifying her sisters who lived in Drummoyne. the Matron eventually contacted them through the Drummoyne Police.

Arriving after a long and difficult journey, the sisters found Lily had died. The only consolation they had however, was that she had lapsed into unconsciousness, and even had they been with her she would not have recognised them.

Pioneering Family

nurse lily Malone comes from one of the pioneering families of the State, her father, the late Mr John Malone, having run the coaching service that connectsTarago, a small station on the Goulburn-Cooma line, with Braidwood. In later days the coaches were, of course, done away with, but in the early days, when the State was in the making, the coaches carried the mails and passengers.
