1. William Law, son of Andrew Law and Agnes Milne Or Mill, was born in 1811 in Edinburgh, Scotland (lived in Campbells Close, Cowgate), died on April 15, 1893 in Cranbrook, NSW1 at age 82, and was buried on April 16, 1893 in St. Stephen's Church of England, Penrith, NSW. The cause of his death was Senile debility.
Notes: The following information supplied by John Law [pam.john.law@bigpond.com] WILLIAM LAW
William Law appears to have been born in Edinburgh, spelled Edinborough in Convicts' Index, Scotland in 1811. His parents were Andrew Law and Agnes Milne or Mill. He had an older sister Christian who married John McKay on 8th November 1827 and an older brother James.
On the 11th December 1826 William was tried with four others for House Breaking. The charge on him was not proven but on the 7 January 1828 he was tried and found guilty in the Edinburgh court for House Breaking. This, I think, means the attempt of stealing took place during the day. He already had two convictions in the lower court on 19 July and 25 August 1827. He was sentenced to fourteen- (14) years transportation to NSW. At the time he was only sixteen (16) years of age.
Research of William's FIRST trial in SCOTTISH RECORD OFFICE revealed the following from the file, Ref.AD14/26/80.
DANIEL LANTWHELER, tailor, DANIEL McLAREN, mason, WILLIAM LAW, brass founder, MARGARET DESLEY alias DUGGAN, and ANN WESTWATER were indicted and accused of HOUSE BREAKING and RESET of THEFT. On the 5th October 1826, watches and clothes were stolen from the house of James Smith Mack, a solicitor, in Howard Place, near Edinburgh. Some of these stolen clothes were found by the police in a raid on the room, rented and lived in by Lantwheler, McLaren, Desley and Westwater. William happened to be visiting (not for the first time) and was trying on a pair of stolen trousers. The two girls were out at the time but were apprehended on their return soon after. Suspicion is the reason given for the police raid. All except William were found to be wearing stolen clothes at the time of their arrest.
William, in evidence, stated that he was 14 years old. He was born in Edinburgh. He followed the occupation of a brass founder. He resided with his father Andrew Law, a tanner, in Campbell's Close, Cowgate. He stated that he knew McLaren for about 5 months, Lantwheler about 2 months, Desley about 5 or 6 months but he did not know Ann Westwater. He had visited their room a couple of times but knew nothing about the stolen items. In the past he had been in the Police Office upon suspicion but had never been punished for stealing or receiving stolen goods.
The jury found Lantwheler and Desley guilty of theft by house breaking and of being habitual and reputed thieves. They were sentenced to transportation for life.
Ann Westwater and McLaren were found guilty of house breaking. They were each sentenced to transportation for 14 years.
The case against William Law was not proven and he was dismissed from the court.
Up date - July 2008 Further research has found that William's family and neighbour provided him with an alibi. This information is contained in a law book volume called :- Reports of Proceeding in the High Court of Justiciary From 1826 to 1829 by David Styme, Esq. Advocate. MDCCCXXIX. The gist of the alibi is as follows:-
In his declaration William stated that he went down to Leith at 10 o'clock, got a horse to hold at Newhaven at 12 o'clock, sat for 2 or 3 hours on the stone pier, returned home about 5 o'clock, remained about half an hour and had his dinner, went out again and walked by himself in the Meadows till it was dark, as he had nothing else to do, came home again, it might have been half past eight and did not go out again. However his mother, Mrs Agnes Law/Milne, his brother, James, sister Christen and a neighbour, Mrs Bell gave statements that he was at home by half past six and did not go out again. They were all sure of the night in question because Mr Milne, owner of a brassfoundry, James' employer, was to visit that night to take William into his employ but was otherwise engaged so was unable to do so.
The Lord Advocate instructed the jury to weigh up the conflicting stories. William said he was out but his family said he was in. They, the jury, should be cautious of accepting the evidence given by the prisoner's own family. He questioned whether or not William would have been able to share in the stolen property if he had not taken an active part in its abstraction. William had been arrested while trying on stolen clothes.
William's Advocate, Mr Leslie Melville, in his address to the jury stressed that William's family had been called as witnesses because only "near family would know if one had been at home on any particular occasion. Their stories had been strengthen and confirmed by the severe cross-examination they had under gone. The slight discrepancies were but additional proofs of it being no made up story between them" and "that the poor little boy had just made a mistake" about the time.
The Lord Justice-Clerk in his charge to the jury stated that he did not know of another instance where the plea of alibi was contradicted by the prisoner's own declaration. The evidence had to be weighed carefully as the neighbour's evidence may have been influence by conversations with William's family. Mr Milne should have been called to clarify and give weight to the alibi. If the jury had any doubts at all the the prisoner, William, was entitled to the benefit of them.
As William was found not guilty and dismissed from the court, the jury believed the alibi or thought there was enough doubt to do so.
The full report can be found at -
William was convicted of two offences in the lower court, probably Edinburgh Burg Court, on 19 July and 25 August 1827.
Research of William's SECOND trial in SCOTTISH RECORD OFFICE file, Ref.AD14/28/18 give the following information. WILLIAM LAW, blacksmith (note change of occupation), was indicted and accused of theft by house breaking. On 10 th November 1827. Items of clothing were stolen from the house of Reverend Patrick Clason in Bucclecuch Place, in or near Edinburgh. On the same day, about noon, Roderick Grant, a policeman and William Southerland, a night watchman met two boys, one carrying a parcel, going up the Cowgate. The two boys turned and ran. Grant and Southerland gave chase. The two boys escaped but had to throw away the parcel. This was found by a girl of 8 years, one Janet Hay who took it to the Police Office. It was found to contain some of the stolen articles from the Reverend Patrick Clason and wrapped in a printer's apron. Meanwhile Grant met William Law at the foot of St John's Hill. When William turned and ran, he chased and apprehended him. William was searched on the spot and a black silk handkerchief, (one of the stolen items was a black silk handkerchief), was found in his pocket. Michael McCabe, in evidence, stated that the apron the stolen goods were wrapped in was one he had given to William some days before the theft. William did not admit to the offence.
The jury found William guilty of Theft aggravated by his it being a habitual and reputed thief and his previous it convictions of theft. He was sentenced to transportation for 14 years.
Clearly William associated with persons involved in crime. He was once sent to Bridewell. This may be a prison for young offenders. Apparently he was not always able to find work in his chosen occupation. He did have the support of his family. He lived in his father's house and his mother Agnes Mill, his sister Christian and his brother-in-law, John McKay, gave favourable evidence in court. Robert Grant, the policeman, was involved in both indictments and Police questioning.
A family story, handed down through his son, Alexander tells of William using his Brass founder skills to make keys for thieves, but that he never took part in any robbery. There is nothing in the records to refute the story. Indeed all the evidence against him was very circumstantial .
At sixteen William was 5 foot 2 inches tall, with freckled: complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and had a small scar on his right eye-brow.
He had been trained as a brass founder's boy and later as a blacksmith. Convicts with such skills as these were highly prized in the colony, as they were in short supply.
William arrived in Sydney on the ship "ELIZA" in 1828. This was her fourth trip and not her last.
On his arrival in Sydney he is assigned to Mr George Druitt of Mount Druitt. It would appear that he served seven years with the Druitt family because in 1835 he is granted his Ticket- of-Leave. A Ticket of Leave was granted within that time-span if the convict had only one or two masters.
On the 8 July 1836 William made application to marry Ann Westwater, a convict under bond. This was a regulation for all marriages where one or both parties were convicts. The application was successful and they were "allowed" to marry. The marriage took place on the 6 October 1836 in the Parish of St John, Parramatta.
Samuel Marsden, the Minister who married them is well known in history for his belief in harsher treatment of convicts. He has been some times referred to as the "Whipping Parson".

A little side story to William and Ann. I found a death of William LAW son to the afore mentioned who was born and died in the Female Factory, aged about two. Don't hold me to the date but it was about 1831 and he died 1833? Marsden baptised him and then did his funeral service. Sad little tale. A William Law was born to Ann Westwater in 1835 and a William Law died in 1855 age 21 years. This was probably Ann and William's son.
George DRUITT was not happy that William was to marry Ann and made a complaint to the Governor stating his disapproval. To which the Governor wrote back and not in so many words told him, to butt out and mind his own business as William was now a free man and could marry whom ever he wished. William asked Geoege Druitt for permission to allow his future wife Ann to live on his estate. Druitt refused so William decided to find employment elsewhere. In order to retain William's service or out of sheer spite Druitt tried to influence the Governor into making the decision not to grant permission for the marriage.
I was aware that he was very good at his trade and a very conscientious worker.
Up-date 2004 11th May 1846 from the Colonial Secretary's Papers:- In a petition by his wife, Ann for her daughter, Isabella Westwater aged between 14 and 15 years, to be placed under her care from the Protestant Orphan School, William Law is mentioned. A recommendation by Willbour Midj…… states him to be excellent and industrious tradesman (Blacksmith) and capable of looking after the child.
Apart from the birth of the children little is known of the Family.

It is now known from official records and newspaper reports that William and Ann with their children, except Anna moved to Back Creek near Wolumla on the NSW South Coast about 1857. As Anna Married James Mills at Penrith in 1859 it is most possible that she did not travel with them. Nor can we be completely sure of Andrew who would have been about 17 years.
In the 1859 Eden electoral roll a James Law was residing at Back Creek. Is this William in error? Or a relative of some kind? A relative living in the area would give an explanation as to why the family moved. Another suggestion is that the depression of 1854 may have forced William look for cheap land for farming to supplement his blacksmithing. He now had growing lads who could certainly pull their weight.
In the 1867 National Directory of NSW there is a W Law and a J Law residing at Back Creek (Eden). This J Law could be the fore-mentioned James Law or James, William's son.
In 1865 and 1866 William purchased 3 blocks of conditional Crown Land.
In 1866 he was on the committee for the Wolumla School.
In 1866 and 1868 he was involved in court cases involving stolen cattle. He was either a witness or the injured party.
In 1876 he placed an advertisment in the Bega Standard offering a reward for a stayed mare.
The 1878 Greville's Official PO Directory list him at Back Creek Wolumla.
In 1879 Frances, William's son was placed in the Gladesville Asylum by a court order.
In February 1884 Frances was given leave of absence on trial for 3 months to live with his mother. This was extended to 6 months and he was discharged on 26 Nov 1884.
It can be assumed that Ann moved back to Castlereagh area between 1879 and 1884 to be near her son and that William travelled with her or arrived soon after.
On the 15 April 1893, William died at Cranebrook. He was buried in the same grave as Ann who had died in 1887 at St Stephen's Cemetery, Penrith. Their Headstone reads: -
''In affectionate memory of ANN LAW a native of Edinburgh who died June 2 1887 aged 78 years. A pilgrim through this vale of tears The desert path she trod Till Jesus called her ripe in years Traveller ----- home to God. WILLIAM LAW husband of the above died April 15 1893 aged 82 years At Rest.

ANN WESTWATER Very little is known of Mary Westwater and Francis Pierce (Percy, Percival) the parents of Ann Westwater. While it was the custom in Scotland in those times for the wife to retain her maiden name after marriage, one wonders why Ann used the family name of Westwater instead of Percy. Their place of living is unknown. One assumes it was some where in or near Edinburgh.
In 1826 at the time of Ann's trial, she stated her parents had died when she was young. The court appears to accept this statement as true. They were not called forward as witnesses. They may have died by this time. Perhaps they lived elsewhere in Scotland and were unaware of Ann's plight.
Ann Westwater was born about 1809 at Cannongate in Edinburgh Scotland. Her convict papers state that she had been trained as a nurse and a housemaid. This may not be true as I think that the trade or calling column was filled in as a guide to allocation on arrival. Certainly her trial notes give no information of her occupation. The trial, of course, was only interested in proving that she was of "bad" character.
On the 11 December 1828 Ann was convicted in the Edinburgh court for house breaking. Although it was her first offence she was sentenced to 14 years transportation in NSW. Ann was 16 years old and unmarried at this time.
Research of Ann's trial in the SCOTTISH RECORD OFFICE unearthed the file, Ref.AD14/26/80.
DANIEL LANTWHELER, tailor, DANIEL McLAREN, mason, WI LLIAM LAW, brass founder, MARGARET DESLEY alias DUGCAN, and ANN WESTWATER were indicted and accused of HOUSE BREAKINC and RESET of THEFT. On the 5th October1826, watches and clothes were stolen from the house of James Smith Mack, a solicitor in Howard Place, near Edinburgh. Some of these stolen clothes were found by the police in a raid on the room, rented and lived in by Lantwheler, McLaren, Desley and Westwater. LAW happened to be visiting (not for the first time) and was trying on a pair of stolen trousers. The two girls were out at the time but were apprehended on their return soon after. Suspicion is the reason given for the police raid. All except Law were found to be wearing stolen clothes at the time of their arrest.
When Ann was arrested at 12 noon on Saturday 7th October, 1826 in the company of Margaret Desley alias Duggan, she stated that she was 12 years of age and that her parents had died when she was young and since then she had lived in different places in Edinburgh. Five days previously she had gone to live in a room with Margaret D. at the house of Mrs Marshall in Halkerston's Wynd. Lantwheler and McLaren were also in residence in the room by this time. One of the regular visitors to the room was William Law.
It seems that Ann and William were both, at least "street-wise". Ann has learned to live by her wits and take food and lodging where she can. It appears that she has no close relatives to rely on. At the trial Ann give her age as 12 years although Ann would have been 16. William gives his age as 14. More than a year later at his next court appearance William again states he is again14 years old. Perhaps they hoped the court would be more lenient if they were young.
Convict records state that at sixteen Ann can read but not write. This combination of being able to read but not write occurred among people who used the bible as an important part of their religion. They had a use for reading but not writing. Ann's religion is simply listed as Protestant.
She was 5 feet 2 inches tall, with fair freckled complexion, Hazel-grey eyes and reddish-sandy hair.
Ann arrived in Sydney on the female convict ship the 'PRINCESS CHARLOTTE.' in 1827. This was not the only trip for this ship.
On her arrival Ann was assigned to John Connor of Sydney.
Up-date 2003/4 from Val Hanlon. Sydney newspaper listed her as "a runaway, 16 years old" in 18287 but whether this was from her assignor, or from the Female Factory we have not yet ascertained.
Convict records (reel 2278 2/B211) show that Ann Westwater, as a third class convict was punished by a 24-hour confinement for fighting in the Female Factory on the 5th February 1828. See notes on "The Parramatta Female Factory."
21/7/1831 Ann Westwater was included in a list of Female Prisoners returned to the Service of the Government at Bathurst. She was returned from D.A.C.G. Howard, "having no further occasion for her service" and applied for by Mr J Sutter. Did she go to Sutter? This reassignment came only one month after her baby Isabella was born in June 1831. As Isabella was baptised on 29.8.1831 in Bathurst, this would place Ann there, presumably living with Caesar McAlister, at that time. However as Isabella was again baptised in April 1832 at St John's Church, Parramatta, it would appear that Ann was by that time back at the Female Factory.
In 1834 the Superintendent of the Female Orphan School stated in a letter to the Colonial Secretary, that Ann Westwater, laundry woman, went before the Magistrates, was punished and returned to the Factory, for misconduct. She was being paid 7 pounds per annum for her work at the Orphan School.
We know that at her marriage in 1836 she was listed as a 3rd Class Prisoner in the Parramatta Female Factory. However, the marriage banns state she was "of good character!" By 1836, when Ann Married William Law, she appears to have had two children. Isobella was born in 1831 and William in 1835. Both of the children were born in the women's factory at Parramatta. Many convict women in service were sent to the women 's factory when they became pregnant, especially if they were not married. This practice was purely for economical and medical reasons. Because of the name William and the date 1835, one would guess that this is William Law's son and thus the two had been living together before they were married in 1836. Both Ann's and William's death certificate state the death of 1 male and 1 female. A William Law aged 21 years-died 10/12/1855.

26th August 1831. Ann was transferred from the service of D.A.G.Howard of Bathurst to Mr J. Sutter, the former having no further use of her service.
2nd July 1834. Ann was classed as a laundry woman. She was again returned to the Female Factory having been before the Magistrate's Court and punished.
10th July 1837. Ann's daughter Isabella Westwater, aged 6 years was listed as a pupil in the Female Orphan School.
11th May 1846. Ann Law (nee Westwater) petitioned for Isabella to be returned to her care. She was between 14 and 15 years of age. She should have been apprenticed out of the school 12 months prior to this but she had been in very delicate health. She had been at the Female Orphanage since 1834. The correspondence indicates that the petition was not successful.
23rd December 1851. Isabella Westwater, Ann's daughter, was deserted by her apprenticed master or employer, Mr Betts. The court could not find him as it was thought he had gone to the gold diggings. She was placed in the Protestant Orphan School. She was thus re-allocated to Sarah Bainbridge in the Illawarra. Her age was given as 16 (?) and was apprenticed for 3 years as a house servant. Sarah Bainbridge lived at Bulli, ran a dairy, was a widow and a protestant. She had a recommendation from George Langley.
19th February 1854. Sarah Bainbridge petitioned for Isabella to be returned to the Orphan School as her circumstances had changed and she could no longer provide employment (apprenticeship) for Isabella. The correspondence indicates that she was not able to return to the school and she was to find her own way in the world.

3. Andrew Law (William1) was born on July 12, 1840 in Mulgoa, NSW,9 was baptised on August 23, 1840 in Church of England, Mulgoa Parish, NSW, died on July 11, 1927 in Adaminaby, NSW10 at age 86, and was buried in 1927 in Church of England Section, Adaminaby Cemetery, NSW. Another name for Andrew was Andy.
Notes: Andrew Law was born on the 12 July 1840 to William Law and Anne Law (nee Westwater). He was baptised in the C of E church in the Parish of Mulgoa in the county of Cumberland. His mother, Anne, was 31 years of age. She had been transported to Australia from Edinburgh, Scotland for 14 years in 1827 for housebreaking. His father, William, was 3 2(? )years of age. He had been transported to Australia from Edinburgh for 14 years in 1828 for the same offence. He had received his Ticket of Leave in 1835. He and Anne were married on 6th October1836 by Samuel Marsden, the 'Whipping Parson'.
Andrew was the second born child but the first boy. Little is known of Andy's early life and indeed most of his life. However he must have grown up in the Penrith area, gone to school there and helped in his father blacksmith shop.
"Andy Law arrived on the Monaro with two thorough-bred horses just after the Hall Gang broke up. He took up with a local widow and settled down there. He never talked about his past or his family." So the story goes. However whether it was the late 6O's, early 70's or late 70's is not known yet. We do know that he was there by 1880 because his son, Arthur was born then.
Some family stories tell of late night visitors, who slept in the barn and were gone by early light. The children were ordered not to go out of the house at these times and not to talk about it to anyone.
Clive Law writes, - "Andrew was always Andy to me. Anything I have heard about him came from Lester Giddings who married Iris, Andy's grand daughter. Andy left Sydney, aged 18, driving a bullock team, went to Forbes, and rode with Ben Hall, and when raided by police Andy put his coat on backwards to hide his shirt and sneaked through the police lines. There are gaps, which need answers. I don't have them but considering the times, who knows. Later at Alum Creek, when married to Margaret, she was Granny to everyone, some riders called late one night. Andrew told Margaret to stay inside, he came back later and said somebody would stay in the shed overnight and next morning they were gone, supposedly some of the Kelly Gang. When Andy was about 8O he rode a young horse into Cooma. A car went past and made a noise. The horse bucked but Andy sat him as though in a rocking chair. Margaret was the local mid-wife. A rider would come in the middle of the night. She would mount a horse and gallop off over the hills to help." Research into Ben Hall and his gangs activities indicate that it was possible that a young "currency lad", an Australian born son of convict, could have rode with the Ben -Hall gang for a short time and then returned to a more lawful way of life.
Edgar F Penzig, author of "The Sandy Creek Bushranger", a well-researched account of Ben Hall's life, states in a section headed "Carcoar mail robber":-
"September 19 (1863). It was a Saturday afternoon when Johnny Gilbert, John O'Meally, and another bushranger who had a handkerchief with holes cut in it for his eyes and mouth covering his face, positioned themselves on the road about a mile fom the township of Blaney. Undoubtedly they intended to rob the Carcoar mail. (pp 62).
After relating the story of the mail robbery, under the heading, "Identity will never been known", the author states: -
"It will never be known who this person was. It certainly wasn't Hall, who never covered his face at any time. Possibly it could have been someone like Patsy O'Meally, or any one of the several other bush louts, who joined up for one or two robberies and then returned to more peaceful pursuits". (pp 64).
In two other incidents, the Araluen gold escort, March 13,1864 and the Newbriggen Inn hold-up, March 27, 1864, one of the gang members was not identified. To use Edgar F Penzig's words, "...while the fourth masked man who was armed with Gilbert's revolving rifle and a revolver, kept guard outside, never once entering the inn. Undoubtedly he was another of those "one time only bushrangers" who appeared at various times with the gang." (pp129).
Research also shows that on a number of occasions, Hall and/or his gang were surprised by troopers/police at night, generally the early hours of the morning. On a few occasions prisoners were taken but never all of them.
Thus while it is possible that the stories of Andy's involvement with the Hall gang may be true, there is no tangible evidence. Individuals are left to make up their own minds on this matter.
Some of Andy's brothers and sisters, James, Elizabeth, Margaretta and Alexander were also located in the south coast of NSW in the early 70's. Perhaps they wanted to escape the "taint" of convict parents. Certainly Andy went to much pains to keep it from official records.
Some family stories suggest that he had arrived before John Geraghty died in 1878. He helped out around the place as John Geraghty was ill and apparently was well settled in before Geraghty died.
Margaret Geraghty (nee Venables) had eight children when her husband died. The youngest was less than a year old. John Thomas was the eldest boy at 14 years. Andy Law would have been some protection for her family.
Stories from the Geraghty side of the family show much dislike for Andy Law. There was family bitterness because of their perceived loss of their inheritance. As one descendant put it, "Andy Law walked in and took over the property that our father had worked so hard for."
John Geraghty's will stated that all his children were to receive one equal share of his property on their coming of age. Margaret, his wife was to receive one share if she did not marry. John Thomas was to appoint an executor approved by Laurence Harnett if he, John Thomas, was under age. Margaret with the help of her brothers, James and John Venables, was able to obtain administration of the estate.
Perhaps the Geraghty children saw this as wrong and that Andy may have influenced Margaret. There is no official record of a marriage between Andy and Margaret. But family members believe that Mr. Green, a lay Preacher in the area, would have married them at some time. Although Margaret was called "Grannie" by her Grandchildren Andy was always known as "Andy".
When Andy registered his son, William Francis', birth he claimed to have been born in Boston USA. He also claims to have married Margaret at Candelo on the 10 May 1882. No official record has been found to date. Did the record get lost or did he make up the story to complete the registration form?
A reason for Andrew Law's secrecy and inventiveness of his past and his failure to officially marry Margaret Geraghty (nee Venables) is that he was previously married. Research into the bdm of NSW shows that Andrew Law, Bachelor, Labourer, of Blakeney Creek married Margaret Rielly, Spinster of Blakeney Creek on 8th May 1865 in the Catholic Church of Yass NSW. The witnesses were John Purcell and Elen Egan. A check with the St Augustine's Parish records of the marriage show that he was born at Mulgowa and his father was William Law, a blacksmith. There is no doubt that this is our Andrew Law. Further research over the next 20 years, 1865 to 1885 reveal no birth of children to the couple and no death of Margaret Law. There is a Margaret Law listed at Yass in the 1901 census.
A resent check of the bdm of NSW shows that Andrew Law and Margaret Geraghty (Garretty) were officially married in 1923.
Andy seems to have been quite a character. He certainly made an impression on people. Even today his block of land is called Andy's. Mervyn Venables writes "The Parish map shows Portion 29 to Andrew Law. This is where they lived and is still referred to as Andy's."
The land office Goulburn states: - "The name Andrew Law appears on some portions on the first editions as a lessee or a holder of an incomplete purchase. However those lands apparently were transferred by him prior to becoming freehold. That name also appears on some blocks in the adjoining Parish of Flinders (portion 11 on the first edition and portion 52 on the second edition of these cancelled maps)."
This seems to indicate that Andrew acquired land in his own right. It will be interesting to compare Geraghty blocks with Andy?s if it is ever possible.
Anthur Luton, son of Florence Alice Luton (nee Law), writes: --
"They, grannie and Grandfather, were living about 2 miles from us in a wooden house at a place called One Tree Flat, not far from a place called Shannon's Flats. They had a few sheep, but Andy as we used to call him, used to do a bit of rabbit trapping, but he was very old and bent then and didn't catch many. It has been said that he was a bullocky and once drove down George Street in Sydney. We went to Adaminaby to live in about 1920. They followed soon after and lived near us."
His sister, Glad Davis (nee Luton) writes, "As for Grannie and Andy (as we kids always called them). I wouldn't know how long they lived along Alum Creek-, just assumed they always lived there- never heard of any other place. Andy had a farm - don't know how big. But he retired when he went to Adaminaby. He had broken a leg (don't know when) but think it was from a horse fall. He had to use a stick to walk. Apparently Grannie was the local mid-wife around Alum Creek." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Information supplied by John Law <pam.john.law-at-bigpond.com>
Resent research a given a clearer picture of Andrew life. From 1840 to 1856 he lived in the Castlereagh area. As he did not learn to read or write, there is some question of his schooling or lack of it. In 1857 he probably moved with his father, mother and his siblings to Back Creek near Wolumla South Coast NSW. From 1864 or earlier until at least 1874 he lived or was based at Blackeney Creek near Yass as this timeline shows. 1865 - He married Margaret Reilly from Blackeney Creek. 1869 - He is mentioned in the 1869 NSW Police Gazette with reference to Blackney Creek. 1872 - He was the informant for the DC (Reg No 1872/7327) of his sister-in-law. Mary Marshall nee Reilly. 1874 - He and his wife Margaret Reilly were witnesses at Robert Reedy's wedding (Reg No 1874/4258). 1878 - The Greville's Official P O Directory list him at Back Creek Wolumla. 1880 to 1886 - His four children are born to Margaret Geraghty nee Venables. 1888-9 - He was on the Monaro Electoral Roll at Alum Creek Adaminaby.
