Notes: Thomas Underhill was a convict who arrived in the colony, at Port Jackson, on the 28th July 1831 aboard the ship "Exmouth". The ship had sailed from Woolwich in England on the 2nd March 1831, a voyage of 148 days. Thomas had been tried and convicted at the Warwick Assizes on the 27th March 1830 and sentenced to transportation for life. He was 15 years old.
Following his arrival he was employed as a blacksmith at Cowpastures near Campbelltown. In 1833 he rode overland to Goulburn and then to the Monaro district and on to Twofold Bay and finally to the head of the Kiah River. He was the first white man to travel through the districts in that route. He obtained a job as a blacksmith at the Imlay Brothers shipbuilding business at their whaling station at Snug Cove which is the present site of Eden. He then became a steersman in the Imlay's whaling fleet but eventually moved to Bega to help build the Imlay's station at Tarraganda where they bred horses, cattle and sheep. He was the first to drive a bullock wagon to Dry River and first to plough Pandula Flats where he grew turnips.

At Port Stephen's John Jaggers procured a covered wagon and bullocks - the only means of transport for a family. This covered wagon proved to be their home for about 15 years. They arrived at Double Creek Bega in 1851 where father had the job of shepherd on a portion of one of Finlay's holdings in that area. This inland route they traveled was general to avoid coastal waterways and rivers. There were no made roads or bridges. Travel was very slow. Bathurst was the oldest settlement over the ranges dating from 1815 and was not gazetted as a settlement until 183. It was still in it's very early stages when the Jaggers family arrived in 1843.
Goulburn was the next settlement but there were many stopping places in between. These stopping places governed by the prevailing rivers and creeks to provide water for the travellers. At the bigger settlements wells and pumps were installed.
Elizabeth was 12 years of age when they reached Goulburn.
They continued their journey to Cooma Nimitabell, the route for those aiming at the South Coast, and Bega was reached in 1851. They settled at Double Creek where John Jaggers acted as shepherd for Finlay's sheep for some few years.
Further down the Brogo River by a few miles another settlement - the 'Carver' or 'Angeledale'. Here Henry and Sarah Kirkland had come to rest with their seven children having migrated from Northern Ireland in 1837, three years earlier than the Jaggers who had migrated from England in 1833.
James Kirkland the son of Henry and Sarah, a tall fair haired man with keen blue eyes met the brunette Elizabeth Anne and they fell in love. 'I adored his blue eye's', Elizabeth would say 'and that golden bouncing hair!'
James was working on the Monaro. Having a blacksmith's forge then was the equivalent of a garage in the late 1900's. The upkeep of transport was quite a business. In September 1855 the two, James and Elizabeth (18 years old), decided to marry.
Accompanied by her older sister Louisa and brother Henry, Elizabeth set off on horseback to meet James near Cooma. A small weather board Anglican Church 2 miles this side of the present site of Cooma, was the nearest and only church with an Officiating Rector - Reverand Walter Ricky. There they were married.
Elizabeth spoke of the intense cold of that September day. Of how her breath formed icicles on her veil and her legs and feet were so frozen that on alighting she had difficulty to stand. There was a 'packhorse' track only up the Brown Mountain.
John Jaggers left the job at Double Creek to open a store at Tarragand. At the end of that same year 1858 he moved his store to Carp Street and extended his Business.
In Gipps Street was another business sign "John D Mangan, General Letter Writer!" many were unable to write their own business letters. He later ran evening classes or night school. John Jaggers eldest daughter Louisa married John Mangan and they lived in the district for many years.
John Jaggers was a deamer and a poet. a quiet influence for uprightness in the community.
He passed on in 1877.

Elizabeth was brunette, intelligent and strong willed and deeply religious, Born at Booral in the Hunter Valley, she was a babe in arms when the family moved to Kelso. She was 18 when she married 26 year old James Kirkland in 1855, she had vivid recaollections of their move to Bathurst and other journeys in the covered Bullock wagon which they retained until they reached Bega some fourteen years later. Elizabeth remembers arriving in Bathurst in 1840 which was the oldest established settlement over the rangers, established in 1815.
A child of three at the time Elizabeth remembers arriving in the town which was buzzing with excitement and full of activity, a horse thief had been lynched by a mob. The leader of the mob had been caught, arrested, tried and sentenced to death. On the day the Jaggers arrived, he was about to be hung in the street. Elizabeth, caught up in the excitement, asked her mother could they stay and watch and was rather disappointed when her mother replied "No, we will stay here and pray for the dear man" Elizabeth had a strong sense of fair play, her mother was an expert needlewomen who made dresses for those who could pay, sewing all the tiny frills by hand, especially for the "bouffant" dresses of the day which had bustles. Elizabeth was twelve when the family moved to Goulburn. Her mother was soon engaged by a wealthy woman to make a dress of fussy design and took several weeks to make it. The day after the dress was delivered, madam's carriage pulled up outside the Jaggers door and the lady emerged followed by a maid carrying the dress. Madam then abused Mary because the dress didn't fit. Elizabeth, standing nearby, suddenly stamped her foot causing a hush to fall, faced the woman and said "Don't you speak to my mother like that, you horrid old woman" she later was reprimanded for speaking in such a manner to a client, she never accepted that however, believing that it was the woman's fault for eating too much and putting on weight between being measured and the finishing of the dress.
In her old age Elizabeth lived with her daughter Mary and son-in-law Charles Parbery until her death in 1923.
Elizabeth told her Grandchildren about her life at Double Creek. Of a Sunday the family walked seven miles to Bega to attend Church Services, following wagon tracks or horse trails through the bush, joining up with other families from Tarraganda and North Bega and were sometimes prevented from crossing into town by flooding of the Brogo and Bega Rivers.. They usually took a picnic lunch in a basket which was eaten, after morning service, on the River bank with many other families sharing
the experience.

The cause of his death was enteric fever. Other names for Wilfred were Willaim and William.

Notes: According to the report in the local paper, The Southern Star, he died of enteric fever in Rustfontein Hospital in South Africa in April 1900.
The news cast a gloom over the whole community in which the deceased was, perhaps, better known than any other member of the Bega contingent. Relatives and friends tried not to believe the direful tidings, hoping that, possibly, a mistake had been made. The fact that no official or cabled intimation of his death was to hand lent a ray of hope to their belief, and, moreover, enquiries by Major Bland failed to elicit any direct information...Private Simmons knew of his death before he left South Africa, and this statement removed all doubt on the matter, and confirmed the worst fears of relatives and friends, who are prostrated with sorrow.
It seems but yesterday that we stood amongst the crowd in the local School of Arts and cheered ourselves hoarse in honouring Bega's first unit in the fight for Queen and Country, and amongst the men who stood there on that memorable occasion none looked more fitted to go through the war and return thick with honours than Will Kirkland.

After a Brief illness, Mrs Jane Agnes Brooks, relict of the late Mr G. Brooks of Kyogle, died at her home at Norton Street, Ballina yesterday, age 72.
Mrs Brooks, who was formerly Miss Jaggers, was born on the South Coast. In the early years of her married life she lived at Bega, coming to Kyogle with her husband and family about 26 years ago.
About four years ago she moved to Ballina.
Predeceased by her husband in 1933, she is survived by six sons - Messrs Fred Brooks of Cowra, Harry of Casino, George of Tenterfield, William and John of Kyogle and Norman of Ballina, and one daughter (Anne) Mrs McLennan, Ballina. Two daughters, Mesdames R Wade and A Whyte and one
son Ray, who was killed in the Great War, predeceased their parents.
The funeral will take place in the Kyogle Cemetery tomorrow.

THE LATE GEORGE BROOKS
The death occured in the Kyogle Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon of Mr George E. Brooks, a past Grandmaster of the M.U.I.O.O.F. The late Mr Brooks was 68 years of age, and took seriously ill about a year ago and was under medical treatment in Sydney and Brisbane for a considerable time.
He returned to Kyogle six months ago and was confined to his home until within the last few weeks when he became a patient in the Hospital. There are few men in the country districts of the State today who have had a longer and more honourable connection with movements that make for the relief of pain and suffering than the late G E Brooks.
A busy man all his life in his business, Mr Brooks has still found time to devote to works of philanthropy. Each man choses the particular class of charitable work in which he can best express his personality, and to Mr Brooks the work of the M.U.I.O.O.F. made a strong appeal whilst he was still a youth working at his trade in Nundle and Bega.
As son of a Lancashire family, Mr Brooks had associated with him in early life some fine old English traditions, which he honoured throughout his life. He was born at Nundle in N S W on October 18, 1863. His first job was to drive the horse at the local mines which set the machinery in operation, and later was employed on the pumping machinery which sent fresh air into the drives that the miners were operating.
After spending some time at the goldfields, Mr Brooks went with his parents to the Tamworth district, where he was employed in local business houses for a time, and was then indentured to the local coachbuilding trade.
Later in life he went into business on his own account at Bega and at once became actively associated with the public affairs of the town and district. Entering the council as an alderman he was in the Bega Municple Council for 9 1/2 years. Mr Brooks also held the position of President of the Bega School of Arts Committee and during one year of his office he was responsible for raising 300 ponds by a carnival in aid of the Institutes' funds.
It was whilst living in Bega that Mr Brooks became actively associated with the M.U.I.O.O.F., and during his 19 years residence at Bega he filled practically all the responsible positions in connection with the Bega Lodge.
It was from Bega that Mr Brooks first went to the annual conference as a delegate, at his own expense. He was elected later as a delegate to the grand annual conference, and attended for many years in that capacity, and thus paved the way by becoming acquainted with the inner working of the M.U.I.O.O.F. for the more responsible office that he was destined to fill in later life.
At the conference in 1924 Mr Brooks was elected a director and then advanced in 1927 to the position of Deputy Grand Master and attained the highest honour of Grand Master in 1929. During the time Mr Brooks held office of Grand Master he visited a great many country lodges.
Whilst living at Kyogle since 1915 Mr Brooks took the same active interest in charitable work as he did in Bega. He was the provisional secretary of the first hospital committee, and filled the office of first president of the Memorial Hospital after it had been opened. During the Great War period Mr Brooks, who gave two sons to the service of his country and the Empire, took an active part in the efforts that were made to provide comforts for the men on active service, and also towards securing them farms and homes when they returned.
Mr Brooks also served a three year term on the Kyogle Shire Council, and his previous experience helped him to give good service to the ratepayers.
In 1931 he retired from active participation in administrative work on the board of directors of the M.U.I.O.O.F. He was a versatile contributor to that Society's' journal under the heading: Random Notes: and to district and city papers. Mr Brooks was associated with the Methodist Church as a trustee and a member for many years. A man in every respect and a brother to all, George Brooks gave a fine lead to the younger generation. Australia needs of his type today.
Mr Brooks leaves a widow and grown-up family. One son was killed in the war.
The funeral took place in the Methodist Cemetery at Kyogle on the following day.

DEATH OF FORMER BEGA MAN IN NZ
Mr. Walter Kirkland, former well known Bega resident, recently died in Palmerston .North, New Zealand, at the of 72 years. He had been a resident of Foxton, New Zealand, before his death, at the residence of his niece, Mrs. Clifton, in whose home he died.
The late Mr. Kirkland was born in Bega, in 1879, and first arrived in New Zealand in 1902. He had been a tailor while resident in Bega and returned to his hometown in 1905. where he married Miss Esther Howard, daughter of the late Mr. & .Mrs. John Howard of Tathra Road.
Some years later the ex-Bega man returned to New Zealand with his wife and daughter where, with the exception of visits to Australia. he remained until his death.
The late Mr. Kirkland lived at Shannon for a number of years, following his trade as a tailor, but in 1920 he went to Foxton and took over the licence of Whyte's Hotel.
As mine host of that establishment for 17years, he became well and popularly known locally and throughout the district.
All his life the deceased was interested in sport, particularly that of horse racing and he was never without an interest in this direction, being the owner of some well-known horses in his time. He was a member of the Foxton Racing Club and served for several years as Steward on that body.
Mrs. Kirkland died in 1933, and four years later deceased relinquished Whyte's Hotel, and he took up small farming at Otaki.
He subsequently returned to Foxton and lived with his daughter for the remaining years of his life, except for a spell of about nine months during 1948, when he went back to Australia. His health showed signs of failing about twelve months ago and he was compelled to enter the Palmerston
North Hospital. Failing to respond to treatment, he had left that institution, however, and was temporarily residing with his niece in Palmerston North, prior to returning to Foxton, when his death occurred.
He leaves one daughter, Mrs. G. P. Rough, of Purcell Street, Foxton, to mourn the loss of a loving father There are four grandchildren and one sister survives him in Australia.

Esther Emma Howard (1881-1933)
Esther Howard married Walter Kirkland (b. 1879), son of James and Elizabeth, in 1905 at Bega. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Madge Kirkland in 1906 and a son Trevor M. Kirkland who died as a baby at Bega in 1908.
When Esther's brother George died tragically in 1909, her husband came to Bega for the funeral because Esther was ill in hospital at Randwick. She survived her illness and the family moved to New Zealand, where Esther died 25 June 1933. Walter had a daughter, Joan, out of wedlock in 1922, and after Esther's death, he married again to Agnes Rebecca Gray in 1935, when he was 47 years old.
He died of cancer of the oesophagus 18 April 1952, after 50 years in New Zealand. His occupation was 'tailor', but he had been employed as a hotel keeper and barman for several years.
