My mother was friendly with her too and I remember that Sr M Alphonsus lent her a book on the life of St Therese. She also told my mother that she could train any kind of voice. Maybe they were talking about me. I don't know, but it didn't eventuate I'm afraid."

"Sister M Alphonsus (Rosamund Linnegar) was another well known name in Perth musical circles. Born in NSW, she entered the West Perth Mercies in 1902. She was endowed, it is claimed, with rare gifts as a singer and , as a teacher, was able to develop the tiniest voice to full tone. She was especially noted for her success with adult choirs and students. Her ex-students are said to have adored her, and to have regularly visited her until her death in 1943."
Article from the 1943 Catholic newspaper "The Record".
Death of Sister M Alphonsus - St Brigid's Convent, West Perth.
Friday 4th June, witnessed the close of the earthly career of a well known Sister of Mercy, Sister M Alphonsus, of St Brigid'd Convent, West Perth.
The deceased sister was a native of NSW, and spent her early years in Bombala and Yass. She entered St Brigid's in 1902, and began then the work that she continued until a few weeks before her death. Sr M Alphonsus was endowed with rare gifts as a singer. To the honour and glory of God she devoted her great talent, turning her back on those worldly allurements that the worldly minded seek after with unquestionable zest; sacrificing the honours of high musical achievements to live the life of a Sister of Mercy.
Her work as a teacher bore fruit that extended far and wide throughout this state and earned for her a place of importance in musical, educational circles, notably in the world of song. Her choirs ranked with the best of choral societies and were ever ready and willing to serve in the cause of religion and charity.
Joyousness and gaiety of spirit were two outstanding qualities in her life. She was most sympathetic towards the needy and afflicted and in the capacity of giver of balm to sore hearts she drew souls to God.
A few weeks before her death, she entered St John of God Hospital for medical treatment but the seal of death's Angel was on her, and she received the call home on the First Friday of the month of the Sacred Heart.
A solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Brigid's Church, His grace the Archbishop presiding, attened by Rt. Rev. Monsignor Moloney and Rev. Father Reidy. The celebrant was Father Kelliher, assisted by Father O'Connor and Father O'Farrell. The Priests Choir sang the Mass. A large number of local clergy was present, and St Brigid's Church was filled by members of the various Religious Orders and by friends and pupils - past and present, of the deceased sister.
The cortege moved from the Church en route for Karrakatta, and was well attended. Very Rev. Father Moss read the obsquies and gave the last blessing. At the graveside also were Rev. Father Reidy, Rev. Father Perrott, S J., Rev. Father Ryan, OMI and Rev. Father Kelliher. The last rites were performed with solemnity and dignity, committing to earth the mortal remains of Sister M Alphonsus. Her personal form has been removed from our midst, but her name will long be remembered by those for whom she worked and sacrificed herself that in all things God might be glorified.
May she receive the reward of her life of sacrifice, and may her soul rest in peace."

She remembers Sr Mary Augustine walking along the cloister entrance of the Convent near the music room with her Rosary beads in her hands waiting on the next music pupil arriving. She states Sr Mary Augustine was a very gifted Music teacher, who prepared her pupils for examinations of the Trinity College of London and the NSW Conservatorium of Music. Many students received Licentiates in pianoforte and singing. She remembers her as a very dignified woman, somewhat reserved and very dedicated to the welfare of her students. She taught music in the 'Green Parlour' which she kept in immaculate condition. She remembers her as a perfect lady and a very prayerful member of the community. She was very slim and of very pale complexion - she took the part of Lazarus being raised from death by Jesus very realistically in the scriptural plays performed in the early days.
1952 Newspaper article notes a former student of Sr Mary Augustine - Miss Helen Kerr who performed in musicals around Australia for the J C Williamson Company. "It would give Helen great joy to know her first singing teacher, the kind Sister Mary Augustine of St Mary's College, Gunnedah, could hear her, for it was there that she gained her first knowledge in singing and voice production."
