First Generation

1. Edmund Hyde, son of Joseph L. Hyde and Nancy Walker, was born on September 9, 1824 in Stockport, Cheshire, England, died on February 26, 1891 in Bombala, NSW1 at age 66, and was buried in Bombala Cemetery, NSW Church of England section.

Notes: The following information was supplied by Barry Hyde <barlin33-at-eftel.net.au>

History of Edmund Hyde 1824-1891
(Compiled from historic data, residential maps, letters, Will and 'Word of Mouth' and a little bit of 'Reading Between the Lines').
Edmund, born to Joseph Hyde, Cotton Mill Manager, and Nancy (nee Walker ) on 9 September 1824 in Stockport England, received a basic education and spent his youth learning the shoemaking trade. At 19 years of age, he married Mary Coy, born 9 April 1826, on 3 September 1843 and they had three daughters whilst in England. Julia, born January 1844; Eliza born in 1850 and Mary Elizabeth, born 1853. He became active in manhood suffrage for votes, etc and decided to leave England without family in late 1852 to escape from being arrested for his activity. . Edmund paid passage on a ship but slept in and it sailed without him. On board the ship were his luggage and possessions as well as the majority of his savings that had been given to the Captain for safekeeping. Fortunately for Edmund and his generations that followed, and unfortunate for the passengers and crew, this ship was lost at sea with no survivors.
There was a Barque named Marie that was wrecked off the Victorian coast with all hands and passengers lost around about this time. It is possible that this was the ship Edmund missed.
Edmund caught the next ship, the
Northumberland that left Liverpool on 23 November 1852 and landed in Launceston, Tasmania, on 19 February 1853 with sixpence in his pocket, a basic education and the knowledge he'd gained in the shoemaking trade that enabled him to find work in his trade.
On 5 April, 1853 he gained a berth on the ship, Nautilus, at Launceston, sailing to Melbourne, where he again picked up work in his trade before heading for NSW to visit his brother, Joseph (1809-1893), who migrated and settled in Lochiel earlier in 1849. After visiting Joseph, Edmund took up a Publican's Licence at the 'George and Dragon Inn' at Cathcart for a short time before leaving for Bombala in 1854 to check out the gold diggings in that town.
He found that he was better off continuing in his trade as shoemaker and with the purchase of a small shop with residence, Edmund brought his wife Mary and their three daughters to Bombala. They arrived on 16 June 1855, sailing from England on the Golden Era.
On 18 April 1856, Mary gave birth to a daughter, Rose Trevor followed by Edmund Jnr (born 26 September 1857), William Francis (born 15 August 1859), Albert (born 18 May 1861), Martha Alice (born 9 April 1863).
Julia, his eldest, married James Reid on 7 January 1864 in Bombala.
Another son, Charles, was born 25 February 1865.
Being a man of enterprise and vision he established, in about 1865, a Leather and Boot Business, at the corner of Maybe and Forbes Sts with Tannery Sheds situated at the end of Forbes. The Tanning Pits for curing the hides were located at the top end of Forbes St that later became the property of the Exhibition Society, where the cattle yards were situated.
His youngest child, Silas Augustus, was born on 29 September 1867.
On 2 October 1875 Edmund added a Saddle and Harness Shop to his other businesses, purchased from J. P. Conlon (Bombala Herald) at the corner of Maybe and Cardwell Sts, (with residence accessed via a lane running behind the shop between Cardwell and Bright Sts). The address was 43 Maybe St and it employed thirteen hands. . This was added to his other businesses.
Mary Elizabeth married Phillip Brassington on 5 October 1870 in Bombala.
Eliza married Robert Bruce Wallace in 1870 in Bombala.
Rose Trevor married John Allen on 13 April 1875 in Bombala?

Edmund Jnr married Esther Bellchambers on 14 September 1878 in Bombala.
The goods produced from his businesses were much in demand and travelled to Sydney and Melbourne as well as being distributed throughout the local Monaro District. Assisted by his sons, Edmund, William and Albert, these businesses proved quite lucrative and he decided to expand the site in Maybe St into a sizeable General Store (about 1880) adapted for a wide range of wholesale and retail trade and also purchased a large Timber Yard. All enterprises at the time were of the most commodious in the town. The times being favourable, and being a man who gave strict detail to business, Edmund had acquired a considerable amount of property, as well as his businesses (eg Bombala Gold Fields 51 acres, 1 rod - Volume 132 Folio 35, purchased 17 February, 1858 for 51 pounds, 5 shillings) and was an active member of the local Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) as well as being a Justice of the Peace and Licensing Magistrate.
He also acquired property at Broadwater and Dubbo.
William Francis married Mary Anne Foster (Cummins) on 8 June 1880 in Bombala.
Albert married Minnie Gordon on 6 September 1882 in Bombala.
Martha Alice married Alfred Hardacre in 1883 (approx) in Bombala.
Indications are that Edmund had his money, and possibly mortgages, with the
Australian Joint Stock Exchange.
Edmund retired from active business around 1885 leaving the management of the businesses to his four sons, Edmund Jnr, William Francis, Albert and Silas, who was an Accountant. He travelled for a time and for several years, because of ill-health, living on his property at Broadwater and finally, under medical advice, took up his residence in Dubbo, the climate being favourable to his malady of severe asthma that he had suffered for several years.
Silas Augustus left Bombala in 1889 for Western Australia where he married Alice Louis York on 10 September 1891 in Northam, WA.
Edmund decided to return to Bombala after visiting Sydney but detoured via Broadwater and spent time with brother Joseph at Lochiel. He had to remain down the mountain till he regained sufficient strength to return to Bombala in 1890.
He left an intricate Will, dated 3 July 1890, and 'in a nutshell interpretation' leaving his estate in Trust until his wife, Mary's death, granting her the full use of the family home and an allowance from the Trust of two hundred pounds per annum. At the time of her death all the Estate was to be converted to cash and 2/3rd's shared between those sons that had reached the age of 21 years (all 5 sons had exceeded this age) the remaining 1/3rd to be divided equally amongst the remaining children or their children if parent deceased.
A Codicil was added on 18 February 1891 decreasing Mary's allowance to one hundred pounds per annum.
Edmund's last days were spent with his eldest daughter, Julia Reid of Bombala, and he died on 26 February 1891. He was interred in the C of E Cemetery, Bombala, where the
IOOF members formed a guard-of honour then marched in full regalia before the hearse. Mary had all his personal correspondence and photos buried with him. He left a surviving immediate family of a wife, 5 daughters and 5 sons.
Hyde St, Bombala was so named for Edmund's contribution to the District.
William Francis and Mary Anne Hyde looked after Mary until she died on 3 February 1893 at RPA Hospital, Camperdown NSW. She was buried at Waverley Cemetery.

The Estate value at his death was 10,404 pounds (a princely sum in those days).
The selling of businesses and assets, divided as per the Will, would have left a reasonable amount of money for the 5 sons but their source of employment would have gone and unfortunately for the whole family, two things happened that could have affected their inheritance.
1. The collapse of the Australian Joint Stock Exchange Bank on 20 April 1893.
2. The freezing of the sale of land and property in 1903 as Bombala was being considered as a likely site for the ACT.

Notes: The following information was supplied by Barry Hyde <barlin33-at-eftel.net.au>
Like his brothers, William would have probably received a college education and as a youth and young man he was quite a sportsman, excelling in local sport in Bombala, particularly Athletics (e.g. Pole Vault); Cricket, where he was an opening bat and bowler; and Rugby Football where in 1891, at the age of 32, he was part of a team that played against a visiting English team. He was also known for his feats of strength being reported to have lifted a dray full of men off the ground with his shoulders. It was also noted in the Bombala times that William was an accomplished singer, performing in local concerts.
After his schooling he acquired the skills of a Saddler and he and his older brother, Edmund, worked in his father's businesses that were rapidly expanding
William (age 21) married Mary Anne Foster (age 19, born 15 August 1861) on 8 June, 1880 at St Mathias C of E church Bombala. Witnesses were Albert Alfred and Esther Hyde.
There is no information to date of where William and Mary lived. Because of his father's prosperity and his own position, William would have provided an adequate home in Bombala for his wife and forthcoming children.
When his father retired in 1885, he left the running of the businesses to four of his sons, Edmund Jnr (age 28), William (age 26), Albert (age 24) and Silas (age 18).
Businesses were a Tannery and Boot Factory (by 1865), Saddle and Harness Shop (1875) at the corner of Maybe and Cardwell Sts that was later converted, around about 1880, to a wholesale and retail General Store and somewhere in between 1865 and 1880, a large Timber Yard.
By 1885, William and Mary had one son Percie (24 October, 1881, died 1885) and two daughters, Adela Elvira (born 23 August, 1882), Idalia Daisy Myrtle (born 27 July, 1884). Other children followed at regular intervals: Victor Edmund (born 29 December, 1886), Horace Roland (born 27 November, 1889).
Brother Silas (age 22) had left Bombala and gone to Western Australia in 1889.
On 26 February 1891, father Edmund the Elder died, leaving a Trust Estate where the remaining sons would continue to run the businesses with accommodation and a dowry for their mother until her death.
Being the oldest son, it is presumed that Edmund Jnr and his family would have moved into the family home with his mother at 43 Maybe St, Bombala.
In that same year (1891), William and his brother, Edmund Jnr, helped form the first Municipal Council of Bombala. Other members were: H. M Joseph (elected Mayor); E. N. Plowright; F. E. McKenzie; M H. Hart; J. Mudie; W. H. Davis and J.H. Morgan.
He became a Member of Mountain Masonic Lodge, Bombala, on 6 June 1892 (rose to the rank of Master on 10 January, 1898).
Another daughter, Claudia was born on 15 October 1892.
The Tannery Building was destroyed by fire and the brothers lost a great deal of money fighting a losing battle with the Insurance Company.
On 3 February 1893, Mary (Coy) died at RPA Hospital Camperdown and was buried at Waverley Cemetery. All assets then had to be sold, as per the Will and divided accordingly (see Edmund Hyde history for details). William's share was 1,287 pounds. He stayed on in Bombala and had three more children: Frank William (born 17 December, 1894), Alma Mary (born 21 July, 1897) and Henry Harold (born 1 October, 1900).
William and his brother, Edmund Jnr, started up a Saddlery Business but with declining trade together with the collapse of the Australian Joint Stock Exchange Bank on 20 April 1893, it saw the bulk of William's savings vanish. He stayed in Bombala till 1901 then took his family to Goulburn where Adela (age19) married Arthur Wheatley (3810/1901) in that same year and Victor was confirmed 3 August 1902 at St Nicholas C of E.
. Mary Coy went with them, as she was particularly fond of Mary Anne (William's wife).
The family, less Adela, left Goulburn in 1906 and journeyed to Temora.
Another son was born, Arthur John on 22 April, 1907, and they remained in Temora till about 1913-4.
On 19 November 1913, Victor Edmund (age 27) married Margaret Jean McArthur at Millicent, Sth Australia.
Finally the remaining family journeyed to Sydney, acquiring accommodation at 238 Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Forest Lodge, NSW.
In 1914 (108/1914) Horace Roland (age 25) married Ethel Sinnett in Sydney.
In 1917 (approx ) Idalia Daisy Myrtle (33) married Anthony Benenati in California, USA.
In 1919 (5242/1919) Alma Mary (age 22) married Robert Vincent Cork in Glebe, Sydney.
In 1919 (1379/1919) Claudia (age 27) married Percival Schomberg in Glebe, Sydney.
In 1920 (1524/1920) Frank William (age 26) married Patience Longfield in Glebe, Sydney.
On 14 July 1924 William became a Foundation Member of Taxteth Masonic Lodge in Annandale and was Chaplain in 1924-25 and 1930.
On 10 April 1926 (6257/1926) Henry Harold (age 26) married Thelma Margaret Noakes in Nth Sydney.
In 1929 (16418/1929) Arthur John (age 22) married Nellie Broomhead in Glebe, Sydney.
William Francis died on 9 April 1931, at the War Memorial Hospital, Waverley, NSW. The witness was Henry Harold Hyde (age 30) of 374 Annandale St, Annandale. His funeral was held at St Bedes C of E, Drummoyne on 11 April 1931 and he wore his Masonic Regalia and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney. There was little in his Estate, with no known Will and without any probate.
Mary Anne Hyde lived to a ripe old age of 97 years, living first with Harold, then with Nellie Hyde (Arthur's wife) and finally with Alma Cork at Leichhardt where she joined William in his burial plot at Rookwood Cemetery on 17 January, 1956.

William married Mary Ann Foster, daughter of Martin Cummins and Mary A. Clark, on June 8, 1880 in St. Matthias' Church of England, Bombala, NSW.67 Mary was born on August 15, 1861 in Cooma, NSW,68 died in 1956 in Leichhardt, NSW69 at age 95, and was buried on January 19, 1956 in Rookwood Crematorium, NSW.
