George Thomas Higgs
20 October 1838 -
25 January 1914

This Photo of George Thomas Higgs has been taken
through the glass and it has been developed on glass.
It has never been taken out of the original frame.
We have the original on the wall of our home and as far
as I know it is the only one. This is the best that I have
as I do not have a negative or another photo.

Notes: John was a soldier in the 1/12th (East Suffolk) Regiment on Foot, which served in Australia from 1854 to 1860. He was a member of the 12th Regiment that had arrived in Melbourne aboard the Empress Eugene on 6th November 1854 and had left for Ballarat on the 27th November. In 1854 one company of the 1st Battn, which had proceeded to Cork, embarked there on the 18th January in the freight ship "Gloucester," and sailed on 20th for Van Dieman's Land. The second division of the regiment, consisting of 2 companies, under Captain Atkinson, embarked at Cork on board the transport "Empress Eugenie" on the 28th July, and disembarked at Melbourne on 6th November. The Commanding Officers were Lieut. Colonels Kempt and Percival.

"The 12th Regiment arrived in Australia in 1854 when there was the threat of war with Russia, and internal instability and social unrest on the Victorian goldfields. The men of the 12th Regiment were called upon on two occasions to aid the civil authority. The companies stationed at Melbourne were part of the force that attacked the stockade at Eureka.

John Cridge defended the Crown at Eureka in 1854. During 1855, 165 soldiers deserted in Victoria. This was the highest desertion rate recorded in Victoria. In comparison, 1857, with 96 deserting, was the next highest. These figures are not accurate, as many were not reported to the police!! John Cridge's desertion was reported. His record states:
REGISTRATION NUMBER: 3298RANK:
NAME: John CRIDGEAGE:19 HEIGHT: 5'5"COMPLEXION: Fresh
HAIR: Dark brown EYES: Grey
ENLISTED: PLACE: - DATE: - BIRTH PLACE: Westhatch, Somerset

REG DATE PLACE REMARKS 12th Ballaarat 16 . 8 . 55
The actual Gazette: Victoria Police Gazette, Publication Date Friday, August 31, 1855, Melbourne, Victoria, page 199 reads:
"Deserters from H.M. Service

No 2874, Private William STUBBS, 28 years of age, five feet 8 and a half inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, a native of Stanford, Essex, labourer; took with him regiment shell jacket and black cloth trousers, and

Melbourne, 28th August, 1855"

The upsurge in desertions after 1854 can only suggest the lure of gold, and the unpopularity of the military after the action at Eureka in December 1854.

An extract, supplied by the Numeralla History Group, probably from the local newspaper of the time states: " February 26 (1917) Death of John Cridge of Numeralla, aged 84 years. Two plaques at Numerella Cemetery register the burial of John, his wife Mary, their daughter Francis and sons George and Raymond. Mary's brothers, John and George, George's wife Hannah Mary (nee Stephens) and their son William Edmond, also have a plaque in their memory. The plaques were put in place by the Numeralla and District Community History Group. They have also produced a book titled "In Those Days" Numeralla-Countegany-Peak View and Surrounding Areas.
