1. George De Costa, son of John De Costa, was born on December 24, 1839 in Serrai, Greece, died on August 16, 1872 in Bombala, NSW1 at age 32, and was buried on August 18, 1872 in Bombala Cemetery, NSW. The cause of his death was Consumption.
Burial Notes: He was buried by undertaker Robert McLean at Bombala on August 18 1872. No religious service took place (suggesting he was not of any of the denominations present in Bombala).
Witnesses to the burial (from my reading of the certificate) were J.T. Ryan and Charles Ian Knight
Information supplied by Aydan Casey [papandreou@optusnet.com.au]
Notes: George's death certificate has his name listed as "Georgo" rather than George (Georgo being the Greek form for George), and it is noted that he arrived in NSW 13 years prior to his death, suggesting that he arrived in either 1858 or 1859. It is believed George came to Australia in a whale boat.
George married Elizabeth Parker, daughter of William Parker and Mary Devine, on June 7, 1868 in Catholic Church, Bombala, NSW.2 Elizabeth was born on February 21, 1845 in Queanbeyan District, NSW,3 was baptised on July 5, 1846 in Queanbeyan District, NSW, died on May 16, 1910 in Bombala, NSW4 at age 65, and was buried on May 18, 1910 in Bombala Cemetery, NSW.
Marriage Notes: Neither had been prior married, George was listed as a Labourer and Elizabeth as a Servant. The officiating Minister was Charles Bernard Quinn and witnesses were William Bulgary (son of Ghikas Bulgaris) and Kate Reed. George also appears to have been illiterate as he signed only with an x which was noted as "his mark".
Baptism Notes: Reverend. E. Smith (officiating minister of Christ Church
Queanbeyan, and St John's Church, Canberra)
Notes: Surname shown as Cain on Marriage index

Obituary - Dungog Chronicle - 5th February 1937
"As announced in a previous issue the death took place on Tuesday 26th Jan., at Toronto of Mr. Henry De Costa, who had been in ill-health for a considerable time.
The deceased, who was 65 years of age, was well-known in the Dungog District, where he resided, in the dairying industry. About 1920 he moved to Bonville, where he purchased a property and remained for a time, later selling the property and returning to Dungog where he again resided for a number of years, before finally settling at Toronto.
The late Mr. De Costa was an energetic man of kindly disposition, firm in his ideas and views and of sterling character. In his early years he was a noted footrunner in the Monaro district, where he spent his early years.
Whilst residing in Dungog he took an active interest in all progressive movements for the benefit of the town. He was an alderman for some years; a member of the 'Hands across the Sea' Club, during the war years; a member of the Dungog A & H Association; the first secretary of the Dungog Milk Suppliers' Association; a member of the P & C Association, and other bodies. As an Oddfellow he rose to the position of District Master of the Williams' River District - and in Masonic circles he was a keen and respected member.
As Secretary of the local Milk Suppliers' Association, he fought strenuously to further the interests of the dairying industry in this district, and we understand his labours were responsible in no small measure for an increase being granted on more than one occasion in the face of considerable opposition.
The deceased is survived by his wife; one son Oswald (Telegraph Point); five daughters, Elvira (Mrs. Casey, Bellingen), Lyra (Mrs. J. Moylan, Kyogle); Vella (Mrs. Alex Forster, Bandon Grove), & Doris (Newcastle); two brothers George (Bombala) & James (Candelo); also 14 grandchildren.
His mortal remains were cremated at the Beresfield Crematorium. The pall-bearers were Messrs. C. Casey, A. Forster, T. Bamber (sons-in-law) & J. Walker
The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
