First Generation

1. Duncan Davidson, son of Andrew Davidson and Janet Rearie, was born in 1816 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was baptised on July 17, 1816 in Brae of Pitfodels Banchory Devenick, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, died on October 4, 1881 in "Mannafield", Towrang Near Goulburn, NSW1 at age 65, and was buried on October 6, 1881 in Mortis St General Cemetery, Goulburn, NSW Grave 449. The cause of his death was Suicide by hanging.

Death Notes: The jury on the Inquest into the death of Duncan Davidson returned the following verdict - "That on the 4th October 1881 at Mannafield, the deceased, Duncan Davidson, died from hanging; and that such hanging was bought about by deceased's own hands while in a state of great mental depression." The depression was most likely brought on, mainly by loneliness, after the death of his wife some 15 months earlier.

Notes: Duncan and Jane and their first 2 children, Andrew and Margaret, migrated to Australia aboard the ship "Percy" 1841 and were just one family of 25,000 unassisted and assisted Scottish immigrants who migrated to Australia in the years 1832-1850. The "Percy" departed Greenock, Scotland on Friday 21 May 1841 and arrived at Port Jackson on Saturday the 28th August 1841. The shipping record declared the family was brought out by Gilchrist and Alexander, who received £43 .

From 1844 the Davidson family lived for around 17 years in Veterans Flats on the Mulwarree River. Veterans Flats derived its name from the 7 veterans' allotments of 100 acres, each fronting the Mulwarree, made available to veterans of wars from the early 1800s and/or in the NSW Veterans Companies. The allotments were not so productive and most were sold to Andrew Gibson in 1837 and became part of his Tirranna (Aboriginal for 'Swiftly running waters') Property which gave its name to a village, and the locality. That is why some of Duncan's children were shown as being born at Tirranna and others were shown as being born at Veterans Flats as both names included the same place. (Tirranna, which grew to 12,900 acres by the 1880s, is now around 5000 acres, and is still owned by the Gibson family. The famous Tirranna races were a premier social event held annually from 1855, at a track close to the where Goulburn Airport is now located, and then from 1906 to the mid 1920s on a track on part of Veterans Flats, to the west of the Mulwarree, serviced by a siding from Tirranna platform, on the Goulburn to Bombala line, for ease of access by the public.)
Duncan Davidson moved his family to Towrang (aboriginal for 'Shield') in about 1861 and he eventually owned a total of 322 acres in Towrang, one portion of 52 Acres, one of 108 acres, one of 42 acres (all adjoining and called Mannafield) and three separate portions each of 40 Acres.
Occupation: 1872 Postmaster, Mannafield (at Towrang) near Goulburn. He was appointed Postmaster on August 1, 1869 and remained in that position until March 1881. His occupation was also listed as farmer, Mannafield (Towrang), Goulburn as well as being Postmaster.
Davidson's main property, Mannafield, shared its name with a Railway Station called Mannafield Platform, which butted onto the property. It was at this Station that Thomas Hall (son-in law) began his Railway Career. The rail line went through the middle of Duncan's property after he sold 12 acres to the Railways in 1866 through which the Great Southern line to Goulburn was built and which opened together with Mannafield platform in May 1869 and this platform was in use until the new Towrang platform opened in 1881, 1km north of the 'old' platform .
The name Mannafield may have derived from the food use the local Ngunawal people would make of a whitish sugary deposit formed by insects on various trees, most notably the 'Manna Gum' (E. viminalis). In good seasons, up to nine kilograms of this important food could be obtained from a single tree. However as Duncan was living at Mannofield (sometimes spelt Mannafield in Scottish Church records) near Aberdeen, Scotland, at the time his first son Andrew was born, this was the more likely inspiration for the choice of Mannafield as a name for his property at Towrang. The name Mannafield became associated with the locality (including the rail platform and postal district), but after his suicide Towrang became the locality name.

Notes: Mancel Larkin had a golden brooch that she thought Margaret's mother had pinned to her dress when she left the UK. Inside the brooch was a plait of golden brown hair. We now know Margaret travelled with her parents (Duncan and Jane Davidson) from Scotland; so the brooch is more likely to have been given to Jane by her mother Catharine Fisken (nee Reid).

More about Margaret:

• She lived in Bemboka, NSW.

Margaret married James Wilton, son of Charles Wilton and Hannah Lucas, on May 6, 1857 in St. Saviour's Church of England, Goulburn, NSW.30 James was born in July 1835 in Polsham, Somerset, England, was baptised on July 31, 1835 in St. Cuthbert's Church, Wells, Somerset, England, died on July 22, 1926 in Bemboka, NSW31 at age 91, and was buried on July 23, 1926 in Kameruka Cemetery near Bega, NSW. The cause of his death was senility.

Notes: James came to Australia in 1849 (arriving Melbourne) when he was 14 y.o. on the "Sir George Seymour" with father and mother (Charles and Hannah Wilton) and settled in Braidwood NSW.

James and Margaret had a hotel in Captain's Flat (NSW) during the gold rush. The park in Captain's Flat has a lithograph of the Miners Arms Hotel (already very old in 1901). There were at least three hotels from at least the 1880s: Miners Arms; Captains Flat Hotel (run by Mrs M.A. Goggin in 1880s, but not the original owner; replaced in 1938 by a new one of same name); and the Silver Age Hotel. They made good money, sold out and went by bullock dray to Bemboka (3 Mile Flat) where they bought a large property.

Mancel Larkin remembers her great grandparents when they were very old. James was tall and very gaunt. Margaret was a large woman in black sitting in a chair and rather cranky.

He is listed as a farmer in 1872 as at 3 Mile Flat Brown Mountain.

He then took up a position as Station Assistant at Mannafield Platform (later renamed Towrang) on the Southern Line in June 1869 one month after the line opened on May 19 1869.
During his connection with the Railway service he filled almost every position in the Traffic Branch.
He was Station Master at Douglas Park, Glenbrook, and Fairfield and subsequently at Hurstville.
He served as Station Master at Glenbrook 1877-1885 and Hurstville from 1888 till his retirement in early 1910. For many years he was President of the Traffic Sick and Accident Fund, and was one of the members of the Railway Institute since its inception.
-------------------------------
This piece of information comes from Mr Cremer, Historical Officer of Australia Post.
"Before Federation, the Railways and Postal Services were both controlled by the New South Wales Government and railway officials in country towns were expected to do both jobs without extra pay.
The mail was dropped at Glenbrook by the Travelling Post Office officials but the Station Master, Thomas Hall, refused to accept responsibility and left it lying on the platform.
In response to local protests, a Postal Inspector reported that, "All trains stopped at Glenbrook to take on water, and that residences were being erected in Glenbrook in all directions."
The Inspector reported that he thought there should be a Post Office at the station and so, on 1st March, 1882 the same Thomas Hall became Glenbrook's first Postmaster with a small allowance above his railway salary."
-------------------------------
Thomas Hall was responsible for establishing the Gardens on the platforms of Hurstville Station, mainly rose gardens. The high quality and variety of blooms attracted a good deal of attention.
The Department of Railways conducted an Annual Garden Competition and Hurstville won many "First Prize" Certificates.
On March 2 1912 Thomas Hall was elected as Alderman for Penshurst Ward on Hurstville Council serving till October 7 1914. Thomas past away whilst still holding office as an elected Alderman

However the cost of attending Teachers College in Sydney was beyond the family, so he went to Nimmitabel to help his older brother Les expand his business.

Les was a larrikin; he had a betting stand at the races, drove a Ferret sports car, and ran the billiards room. He married hotelkeeper Alex Mudies daughter, Alvina Gertrude Mudie in 1914. They had four children, Lorna, Victor, Norman and Nola, who all went to Nimmitabel School.

In 1900, Les, Mr E Poole, was mentioned in the Bega Standard, as making "as usual, an excellent Master of Ceremonies for the Ladies Cricket in Bemboka".

In 1924, Mrs Les Pooles Worthy Gold ran in the January meeting of the Bega Jockey Club and won the Presidents Handicap with a short head finish between the Nimmitabel mare and a Morans Crossing mare owned by Luke OBrien, Maid of the Desert.

A report in a 1937 paper has Les coming from Nimmitabel to play golf at Bega. He complained about the condition of the golf course "not enough stones and too many trees on the course I will send some stones down."

Mrs Alvina Poole died in Sydney in January 1943 after a long illness. Les bought property at Tathra, in 2002 Dr Browns rooms, and eventually moved down there to be with his brother Andy. Ernest Leslie Poole died in Bega in 1956, aged 61.

Andy was born at Bemboka in July 1888, the 5th child of Edward (Ted) Poole and Anna Jane Wilton. He was a good student and became a teachers assistant at Bombala and Bega, but could not afford to go on to further studies to be a teacher. He worked on Stations in Queensland until moving to Nimmitabel, where his older brother Les had a stock and station agency. Andy & Les formed a partnership, Poole Bros Pty Ltd. Rugby League was a favorite sport and he was known as a Ist class referee.

Andy married the local Bush Nurse, Alice Thomson, in 1922, and a daughter Joan was born in 1923. As a long time Councilor for the Cooma Shire, Andy was President of the Shire from 1938 until 1944.

After Joan married Horace Cochrane in 1946 , Andy & Alice moved to Tathra where Andy again became a Councilor, this time representing Tathra in the Mumbulla Shire. For 17 years he worked in Community Affairs as Secretary of the Tathra Urban Committee, President of the Tathra Jockey Club, and Secretary of the Tathra Beach Committee and Progress Association, the Football Club and original Secretary of the Tathra Bowling Club.
The main road along Tathra Beach is named after him, "Andy Poole Drive".
Andy married the local Bush Nursing Sister in Nimmitabel, Alice May Thomson, in 1922.

When both were single they had boarded at Mrs Adams Federal Hotel and used to walk out each evening after dinner. Mrs Adams remained a close family friend even after she moved back to Sydney.

At first the Pooles lived in the Bush Nurses cottage, but then moved to the western corner of Clarke and Boyd Sts, where they lived for 25 years, looking across the road to Geldmachers Old Mill.

Andy and Alice had a daughter Joan Poole, but sadly lost a son at birth.

Andrew Poole represented the Nimmitabel area on the Monaro Shire Council for many years, attended the opening of Parliament in Canberra and was very good friends with C.W. Bean, the WWI historian.

When their daughter Joan married Horace Cochrane from Toothdale, near Bega, Andy and Alice decided to retire to Tathra, and sold the business to Stan Creamer. They bought a house in Dilkerra Road from Mr Sherlock, and Andy involved himself community affairs, cementing a permanent place in Tathras history. He started or was Secretary/Treasurer of the Tathra Progress Association and Beach Trust, the Bowling Club, Tathra Jockey Club and Lawrence Park, to name a few, and in 1964, in recognition of his active part in community work, the main road along the beach was named Andy Poole Drive.

Alice also became involved in the Red Cross, CWA and the Surf Club. She was made Patron of the Tathra Ladies Surf Club.

The Cochrane family, with four loved granddaughters, moved to Canberra in 1962, and after Alice Poole died in Canberra Hospital in 1964, Andy was persuaded to move to Canberra to be with the family. In 1968, while on a visit to his sister, Mrs Florence Barber, at Bairnsdale, he became ill and died in Warragul Hospital on 2 May 1968.

Andrew married Hilda Mary Copeland in 1913 in Bombala, NSW.511 The marriage ended in divorce in 1919.

Andrew next married Alice May Thomson, daughter of George Thomson and Emma Ann Love, on April 19, 1922 in Hurstville, NSW.512 Alice was born in 1894 in Cooma, NSW513 and died in 1962 in Canberra ACT at age 68.

Notes: Andy married the local Bush Nursing Sister in Nimmitabel, Alice May Thomson, in 1922. Alice was born in Sydney, where her father walked out on the family, so was raised by her mothers family at Rock Flat, Samuel and Emma Love (nee Stopp). When Alice was 14 years old, her mother Emma married John Roche, an hotelier from Rock Flat, and later Cooma and Goulburn.
Alice did her nurse training at Goulburn Hospital, and midwifery at Paddington Hospital, so was a highly trained Sister to run the Nimmitabel Bush Nursing Home, delivering most babies around town, as well as stitching up horrific wounds.

When both were single they had boarded at Mrs Adams Federal Hotel and used to walk out each evening after dinner. Mrs Adams remained a close family friend even after she moved back to Sydney.

He was very badly wounded and in addition had had malaria. He was very bright when he first came on the ship and was hopeful of pulling through. When his condition became worse he was given a blood transfusion and seemed to rally. he was conscious almost to the end and asked me to send his love to his parents and other friends at home. He also said "Padre, you stay by me, don't leave me will you". So of course I stayed with him in prayer till he peacefully passed away. I hope when I come to Sydney I may be able to see his parents and tell them. He was a fine young man and just full of courage. His mates said he very nearly passed away in the field hospital at Moresby but his dogged determination pulled him through. If you see his parents will you please extend to them my deepest sympathies. tell them he was not buried alone, but another lad, and one who saved many of our Australian boys' lives and sacrifice his own, a New Guinea boy who died a few hours after, was buried at the same time, 9 a.m. on October 29th 1942.
