First Generation

1. Charles Cootes, son of Emily Cootes, was born in 1821 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, was baptised on April 15, 1821 in Attleborough, Norfolk, England, died on August 16, 1881 in Bombala, NSW1 at age 60, and was buried on August 18, 1881 in Bombala Cemetery, NSW Church of England section. The cause of his death was Chronic Phthisis (Tuberculosis).

Notes: Charles was a private in the 77th Regiment of Foot. At this stage it is not known when Charles enlisted. The 77th was in Nova Scotia (1846), England (1848), Malta (1854), and the Crimea (1854). The 77th embarked from the Crimea for England 15 June 1856, arriving 23 July 1856. The Regiment spent less than a year at Aldershot and Dublin where it received orders to embark for Australia and on 1st June 1857 its personnel sailed from Kingstown ( Dun Laog haire). It is presumed Charles met and married Eliza in Dublin while the Regiment was stationed there. After a stormy voyage they landed at Sydney on 30 September 1857.
Charles and Eliza's first child, Elizabeth Mary, was born in the Victoria Barrracks, Sydney, two weeks after their arrival.
The Regiment's period of service in Australia was short, and early in 1858 it was ordered to prepare for a tour of duty in Hong Kong, however due to the mutiny in India its destination was changed. On 20th April 1858 the Headquarters of the 77th sailed for Calcutta in HMS Megaera and the remainder of the Regiment followed in the Raby Castle a few days later. They landed at Calcutta on June 13 1858.
Charles was stationed at Fort William, Calcutta from the 1st July to 31st October 1858 before the Regiment was moved to Benares (1559-1860). Here Charles and Eliza's children Charles and Emma were born. Charles also spent the period 1st January 1859 to 31 March 1859 in hospital.
At some stage prior to 1861 Charles, Eliza and Elizabeth returned to Australia possible due to Charles' being discharged, being in poor health. He did not complete his 20 years so did not earn a pension. It is presumed that Charles jnr and Emma died in India.
After leaving the army Charles and family moved to the Monaro where he was variously employed as a labourer, ostler and farmer. He resided at Currawong, Dundundra, Maharatta and Bombala.
Charles died in Bombala in 1881 of Chronic Phthisis (Tubercoulosis) and was buried in the CofE section of the Bombala Cemetery on the 18th August 1881.
Notes on the 1st BATTALION, 77th REGIMENT OF FOOT
The Regiment was also stationed at Hazaribah (1860-1862), Allahabad (1863-1864), Bareilly (1864-1866), Peshawar (1867-1868), Nowshera (1868), and Agra (1869-1870). The 77th left India for England in April 1870.
The Regiment was known as the 1st Battalion, 77th (the East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot (1787-1881), then the 2nd Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment (1881-1948), now part of the Queen's Regiment.
Its emblem is the Price of Wales Plum. Battle Honours - Seringapatam (1799), Ciudad Rodrigo (1812), Badajoz (1812), the Peninsula (1813-1814), Alma (1854), Inkerman (1854), Sevastapol (1854)
