First Generation


1. Robert George Britt, son of Matilda Britt, was born on April 10, 1836 in Battle, Sussex, England, was baptised on May 15, 1836 in Battle, Sussex, England, and died on September 3, 1911 in Adaminaby, NSW1 at age 75.

Notes: Robert arrived in Sydney Australia when he was four years old (as at 10 April 1840) on board the "Marquis of Hastings" with his mother Matilda and Matilda's new husband, James HILDER. Charles, nine months (as at 1 Feb 1841) was also listed as a child of Matilda.
NOTE: Charles BRITT was also base born, that is no father recorded.

Robert's future wife, Sarah HILDER (age two years) was also on board with her parents, Eli HILDER and Mary (nee PLAYFORD)
Robert's mother, Matilda, had Robert four and a half years before she married James HILDER.
In actual fact Robert's wife Sarah's father Eli HILDER and Robert's stepfather James HILDER, were brothers. Three generations of the HILDER family were on the "Marquis of Hastings" . The parents of Eli and James: Henry HILDER and his wife Keturah (nee HAINES) were also on board

Robert married Sarah Hilder, daughter of Eli Hilder and Mary Playford, on June 19, 1861 in Cawdor near Camden, NSW.2 Sarah was born on February 12, 1839 in Mountfield, Sussex, England, was baptised on February 19, 1839 in Mountfield, Sussex, England, and died in 1902 in Adaminaby, NSW3 at age 63.

Marriage Notes: married according to the rites of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Robert signed with his mark. John SMITH and Ellen SMITH were witnesses.

Notes: Sarah was two years old when she arrived in Sydney on February 4, 1841 on the "Marquis of Hastings" with her parents Eli HILDER and Mary (nee PLAYFORD). Also on board were Eli's brother James and Matilda (nee BRITT), the mother of Sarah's future husband.

2. George Eli Britt (Robert George1) was born on July 3, 1862 in Razorback, NSW4 and died in 1939 in Gundagai, NSW5 at age 77.

George married Ada Clark, daughter of Thomas Clark and Elizabeth, in 1884 in Goulburn, NSW.21 Ada was born in 1869 in Yass, NSW22 and died in 1900 in Adaminaby, NSW23 at age 31.

Private McCARTHY was first in everything that was needed and displayed wonderful coolness throughout the Battalion's tour of duty.'

Funeral Notice
The death took place in the Narranderra Hospital on Tuesday 22nd December of an old and respected resident of this district in the person of Mr James William Britt at the age of 78 years.
Mr Britt was a native of Cooma and came to Corobimilla in 1914 and took up land in that district,
his first year in that land was one of a big drought, and some months before it broke (in May 1915) the great war broke out.
Mr Britt was ever ready to help in the various movements in Corobimilla for the welfare of that centre and he and his family made the acquaintance of a large number of friends.
About seven years ago Mr Britt came to Narrandera to reside and remained here until the time of his death.
Deceased is survived by a family of three sons and five daughters.
The sons are Alfred (Corobimilla), Walter (Manfield Victoria) & Arthur (Wollongong)
The daughters are Gladys (Mrs T Crowe, Narrandera), Miss Annie Britt (Narrandera), Sarah (Mrs. T Dawes, Bowral), Muriel (Mrs. J Shinfield, Dubbo), Iris (Mrs A Macdonald, Corobimilla), Edna (Mrs J Loyd, Leeton)
He is also survived by two sisters Mrs Tozer (Adaminaby) and Mrs Venables (Cooma)

James married Mary Ann Cridge, daughter of John Cridge and Mary Higgs, on May 15, 1889 in Cooma, NSW.56 Mary was born in 1869 in Braidwood, NSW57 and died in 1930 in Narrandera, NSW58 at age 61.

Orbituary
The death took place in the Narrandera Hospital on Thursday last of Mrs Mary Ann Britt, wife of Mr James W Britt of Corobimilla.
Mr & Mrs Brittt and family were at one time resident in the Junee district and came to Corobimilla, where Mr Britt engaged in farming operations about 18 years ago. During her residence in this area Mrs Britt earned the respect of all who new her, she is survived by her husband 3 sons and 7 daughters.
The sons are Messrs Alfred & Walter (Corobimilla) & Arthur (Narrandera)
The daughters are Miss's Annie, Iris & Edna (Corobimilla), Gladys Mrs T Crowe (Corobimilla) Sarah Mrs. T Dawes (Leeton) , & Muriel Mrs. J Shinfield (Milvale)
She is survived by 17 grand children
The funeral took place on Saturday last when the remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Narrandera Cemetery, before the funeral left the chuch the ven Arch Deacon Rawling held a short service which was largely attended.
The bearers were Messrs Arthur & Walter Britt, C Dawes and J Britt (Nephew)

"OBITUARY Mrs G Crowe
A long time and well respected resident of Narrandera, Mrs Gladys Mabel Crowe, died at the Narrandera District Hospital on January 12 at the age of 87 years.

Born at Kiandra in 1896 she was one of a family of eleven children belonging to Mr and Mrs James Britt.

She lived and went to school at Adaminaby before the family moved to Mitta, where she met and married the late Mr Thomas Robert James Crowe in 1913.

Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to Corobimilla where they remained until 1932.

During her residence at Corobimilla Mrs Crowe was a keen tennis player and enjoyed immensely dancing, playing the piano and singing.

After moving to Narrandera to reside in 1932 she took a keen interest in the Church of England Women's Guild, of which she was a foundation member.

Her husband predeceased her in 1943.

Mrs Crowe possessed a happy, gentle nature which endeared her to family and friends.

For the past three and a half years she had been a resident of the Narrandera Nursing home, where she was held in high regard by staff and fellow patients.

After breaking her hip she was admitted to the Narrandera District Hospital, where she remained until her death.

Surviving her are a family of ten sons and daughters..
There are 28 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.

Evidence of Mrs Crowe's popularity and the high esteem in which she was held in the community was seen at her funeral on January 16.

St Thomas Anglican Church was filled to capacity for the service conducted by Canan W.J. Fenn.

Interment took place at the Narrandera Cemetery. Bearers were her sons Reg, Ron and John Crowe and grandson, Tony Crowe.."

Gladys married Thomas Robert James Crowe, son of John Anderson Crowe and Annie Bevan, on February 19, 1913 in Church of England Mitta Mitta, NSW.70 Thomas was born on November 15, 1892 in Junee, NSW,71 died on September 2, 1943 in Narrandera, NSW72 at age 50, and was buried in Narrandera, NSW.

Notes: Thomas was a noted horseman. One day he was doubling his cousin Billy Sinclair home from school on horseback at full gallop. A cow was lying beside the road and they decided to jump it. The cow got up as they were going over and threw the horse and riders. Tom was taken home unconscious by the neighbours in a dray.

Tom's occupations included horse breaker, wheat agent and carrier.

He enjoyed tennis and playing the piano and piano accordian.

He suffered from high blood pressure and died from this complaint on September 2 1943 leaving Gladys with ten children to raise. Tom is buried at Narrandera.

   F    vi. Annie Elizabeth Britt was born on December 8, 1898 in Adaminaby, NSW73 and died in 1952 in Narrandera, NSW74 at age 54. She never married and had no children.

   M    vii. Walter Haddon Britt was born on January 12, 1901 in Adaminaby, NSW75 and died in 1974 at age 73.

Walter married Mary Ellen Dinan.

   F    viii. Sarah Hilda Britt was born on August 30, 1902 in Adaminaby, NSW76 and died in 1979 at age 77.

Sarah married Clement Alphonso Dawes, son of Walter Ernest Dawes and Mary Ellen, in 1929 in Narrandera, NSW.77 Clement died in 1974 in NSW.78 Another name for Clement was Clem.

   F    ix. Muriel Matilda Britt was born on October 27, 1904 in Adaminaby, NSW79 and died in January 1991 at age 86.

Muriel married John William Shinfield, son of Henry Shinfield and Susan Ann Commons, in 1930 in Narrandera, NSW.80 John was born in 1895 in Bombala, NSW81 and died in 1955 in Bathurst, NSW82 at age 60. Another name for John was Jack.

   F    x. Iris Eileen Britt was born on May 27, 1907 in Adaminaby, NSW and died on February 15, 1993 at age 85.

Iris married Alan Stuart McDonald in 1942 in Leeton, NSW.83

   F    xi. Edna Marion Britt was born on August 2, 1909 in Adaminaby, NSW,84 died on August 17, 1998 in Sydney, NSW at age 89, and was buried in Bathurst Cemetery, NSW.
