1. Joseph Blaxter, son of Joseph Blaxter and Hannah Guyton, was born circa 1828 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, died on April 25, 1901 in Eden, NSW1 at age 73, and was buried on April 26, 1901 in Eden Cemetery, NSW Church of England section.
Notes: Information from Colin Blaxter:
Of Joseph's early life we know very little, save that by the age of 21 he was employed as a Waterman, probably on the Rivers Wensum and Yare, which partly encircle Norwich and provides access to the Broads and the sea at Yarmouth. We know he was of the Protestant faith and could neither read nor write. Joseph also had a sister, Mary Ann b. 1832.
1848 his life took a turn for the worse. Convicted at the City and County of the City of Norwich Quarter Sessions on the 12th of July 1848 for stealing books from Blakenham Church, Norwich, for bread, he was sentenced to be transported for 7 years. This may not be the only offence he committed as reference is also made to stealing a Looking Glass.
It would then appear that Joseph was held in custody for a considerable length of time while awaiting transportation. This may have been aboard one of the hulks moored at Woolwich. During this time Joseph may have got himself tattooed, as the Surgeon's Report mentions that his "breast (was) covered with letters and figures" as well as the "upper part of arm and part of the arms".
On the 05th of July 1850, the Nile II, under the command of George N. Livesay, Master, sailed from Portland to London, subsequently sailing from London on the 16th of July for Van Dieman's Land. Of the voyage the following facts are known: there were three hundred male convicts embarked, thirty pensioners, twenty two wives, forty six children, five passengers and thirty one crew. The Ship's Surgeon was John Kidd. One death is recorded, a male convict. The voyage took ninety days, stopping at Gibraltar for water and provisions. The Nile was ship rigged, 763 tons, 133.5 feet long, 32.5 feet in the beam with a draught of 21.5 feet. She was laid down in Sunderland in 1849, and so would still have been a new ship by the time Joseph came aboard.
The Nile arrived at Hobart Town on Thursday, the 3rd of October 1850. Joseph, who was described as being five foot, five inches tall, of fair complexion, clean shaven, light brown hair and sandy eyebrows, commenced his term of incarceration under the Probation System.
Whilst by no means a model prisoner, his offences during the next four years were hardly capital crimes. On Monday, the 21st of April 1851, he was found guilty of 'misconduct in being in a Public House during Divine Service on Sunday'. He was awarded seven days solitary for that indiscretion !. A year later on the 19th of July 1852 he was accused of 'misconduct in being in company
with a transported and absconded offender' for which he received three months Hard Labour.
It was during this period that Joseph appears to have worked at the sheep station "Dunrobin" at Ouse, in the central Highlands. "Dunrobin" was owned by Walter Angus Bethune, a Scotsman who by all accounts was an enterprising and successful merchant and trader. On the 9th of November 1853, whilst in the district of Franklin, Joseph was again found guilty of misconduct and sentenced to one month's Hard Labour. He was also not to return to the District.
It is not known exactly when Joseph left Hobart but it would appear to be after the 21st of October 1854, this being the last date entered on his Conduct Record. He made his way eventually to Eden, on the south coast of New South Wales, whereupon he took up employment as a sawyer. On the 30th of May 1864, Joseph married Mary Ann Maria Stone, the daughter of John Thomas Stone and Mary Ann Parker, at the Anglican Church, Eden. Joseph and Mary subsequently had nine children, seven girls and two boys from 1866 to 1884.
During his life at Eden, Joseph may also have found employment as a bricklayer, as reference is made on his son's (Joseph Henry John's) death certificate to this occupation.
Joseph died on the 25th of April 1901 from cancer of the bowel and was buried on the 26th of April 1901 at the Church of England Cemetery, Eden. His wife survived him by another 18 years, passing away in 1919 at Randwick in Sydney.
