Mary Ann worked as a housemaid for a couple at Roseville and for a time ran a boarding house in Newtown. At some time she must have had a trip to Fiji where she contracted Dengue Fever. In her old age she became a little demented and was placed in Rydalmere Mental Home, where she died a few years later. She was admitted under the name Mary Ann Beveridge, and was then living at 18 Piggott street, Dulwich Hill. There must have been something in her possessions showing her correct birth name as when she died she was registered as Mary Ann Babbage, a name that had not been used by the family for decades. Sadly she was buried in a pauper's grave at Rookwood. Her medical notes state that she was ' restless and fidgety, and has no idea as to her whereabouts, the day, date or year. She is rambly and rather confused.....is absorbed in vague delusions of persecution and so on'."
