Note from the new (temporary) Editor

Hi Folks,

I am saddened to have to tell you that Michelle Edwards, our newsletter editor, has reluctantly relinquished her role in the Monaro Pioneers Project due to work and family demands.  I am sure all of you regular readers will know and appreciate what a magnificent job she has done over the last few years in compiling and publishing our regular newsletter.  Pattrick and I personally would like to thank Michelle for her efforts and support and hope she will again be able to be part of the Monaro Pioneers project in the future.

Thank you Michelle

Position vacant:

If anyone is interested in taking on this role, please let me know.  No pay, some effort involved - sounds attractive does it not?

Interesting request

Hi Ian,
Just to keep you up to date.
They are obviously conducting a massive undertaking.
I submitted William John Lawrence (Lawrie) Robinson / Rixon family. I am probably too far removed for any DNA - if necessary, would you be prepared to put out a call to closer rellies?

Subject: Fromelles Project Update - Request for Family Tree [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
(the project to indentify the remains of those diggers recently found in the mass grave in Fromelles, France)

UNCLASSIFIED

Hello All,

Please find attached the latest correspondence from us here at the Australian Fromelles Project Group. This letter and associated material has been provided primarily to request your family tree. Please read the enclosures carefully and return Enclosure 2 to us by mail or email by 28 August 2009.

As we have only your email address on file, we've sent this correspondence electronically. For others with registered mailing addresses, a little over 1100, we have sent this correspondence via surface mail.  Well, actually I should say that we're in the process of sending this mail as we are busily printing, collating, folding, enveloping and sending the 1100 items.  Thankfully, the three of us make the task somewhat faster than it could have been. We should be finished this mail-out by Wednesday next week.

There are some 242 addressees to this email, so please excuse the impersonal greeting on this email and the attached letter. Sending 242 individually addressed emails, while desirable, would unfortunately delay sending this correspondence to all of the families registered with us. Nonetheless, the content of the correspondence is identical for everyone who has registered with us.

Best wishes from all of us and good luck with compiling this information.

Regards,

Subject: Joseph Hyde family tree
Dear Ian
I have gone through the family tree and made some adjustments to my Tree also as Certificate i ordered turn up but i have one Problem i was wondering if you can help with. This person is Ida Rose Power Born 1877/1870 in Eden NSW and Died 1956 in Sydney NSW aged 86 years which if you take 86 from 1956 gives her Birth Year Abt 1880. Her parents are Ann Hyde and Thomas Power according to your Tree. A search of Birth Death and Marriages From 1840 to 1893 her marriage year produces No Birth records for a Ida Rose Power / Ida Rose Hyde Her Mother ( Death Certificate which i have a Copy of ) Died in 1928 and her children's names are listed but there is no Ann mentioned at all. and the informant for her death was Thomas Went her son in law who married Ethel Power who by birth date would be the younger sister of Ida so one would think they would know. Ida and James Spears Marriage certificate( Have Copy) does not list their Parents nor place of birth. But Ann Power Mother of the bride gave permission for the Marriage as Ida was under the age of 21 years. Can you shed any more light thanks
Jim

Hi Jim,

Sorry I am unable to shed any light on the puzzle you have highlighted. The only reference I have is her death index entry which clearly shows her parents as Thomas and Ann. I do have a possible theory though (no proof of course) - it is possible that Ida Rose was in fact Louise Emma who was born in 1875 and seems to vanish thereafter. It is quite possible that Ida Rose chose those names because she disliked her birth names - the use of false names being quite common in those days.
Louise Emma Power would certainly have been underage in 1893. Does the
certificates you have shed any light on the fate of Louise Emma?
Regards,
Ian

Dear David or Barbara,

I discovered this site today and have found it most helpful. I have been attempting to sort out the Goward clan for many years. I am a descendant of Mary Taylor who married John Goward, James Wright Goward(snr) and Mary Ann Denny's 4th child. You may not know that Taylor was her married surname and that she was in fact Mary Ann Willis, younger sister of Lucy Willis who married James Wright Goward (jnr). Lucy and Mary Ann were daughters of Lewis and Mary Ann Willis. The younger Mary Ann Willis married Alfred John Taylor in 1878, had two sons (the youngest was my grandfather), then husband and wife parted company. Mary married John Goward (bigamously), had 4 more children (Alice, Ernest, James and Elsie) and then married again after John was killed by a stroke of lightning. Mary Ann and Lucy's mother's maiden surname was Patterson and she was an Irish Famine Orphan. Her name appears on the Hyde memorial to the Orphans.
I hope this information is helpful.

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for passing this email onto me, I have updated the database and website.

Hi Michelle.

I am a descendant of Michael Heffernan who went to Nimmitabel in 1850. I have always wondered why and find a Johanna Heffernan there married to Morgan Thornton. Do you have a contact for the Thornton line please I need to find out more about her. I also believe that Johanna was sponsored to Australia buy a Michael Heffernan.

Hi Michelle

I have just started entering information I had researched on my family tree about 15 years ago onto Family Tree Maker, and have been amazed at how much information is at my fingertips on the internet these days. I found the Monaro Pioneers website when looking for information about my ggg grandparents, John Murphy and Mary Albon Thomas, who I knew to live in the Monaro district in the 1860s-1880s. I was delighted to find not only them, but also another branch, Richard Johnston and Ann Robinson.  I would love to subscribe to your newsletter, and although my research is very basic compared with that available on the database, I do have photos of Richard and Ann Johnston (albeit not great quality), plus their son Samuel Johnston and his wife Elizabeth Moore. I also have copies of some birth/death/marriage certificates which I am happy to scan and email to any interested contributors.
Can you please let me know what I need to do to receive your newsletter (eg donation).
Many thanks,
Melissa Blythe

Dear Patrick,

I have attached here a baptism certificate of my ancestor who was working on Boro station so it says on her certificate. Whilst she does not have a birth certificate, it states that she was teh daughter of a John Mills, also thought to be a John Milne.  It says on her death certificate that she was born in Goulburn, but that can not be sure. I am wondering if you have any clues as to what station she may have worked on, who her parents were, what her tribe was. I would so appreciate any help you might afford me.
In advance, I thank you!

Hi Lindsay,
Sorry, we no information on your ancestor's family or the station she is identified with. The certificate states the district as Araluen which is usually linked with Braidwood so I suggest you try the local historical society for that area.

Ian, in doing some work on my Susan and William DENT family I found a bit in a letter written by Susan to her grandson Mephi JOHNSON (son of James) dated 29th November, 1885, about a gun accident in the Lawless family who were also living in Bombala. I did a search of Lawless on the Monaro Pioneer to see if I could identify the person killed in the accident and the only possibility was "Sarah Anne Lawless was born in 1874 in Bombala, NSW and died in 1885 in Bombala, at age 11." The descendants may not know the following, which is the reason I'm passing it on.

"A nother great shock in Bombala today Mr. Lawless was up heare to see Wille to prepare a grave for his daughter I don’t know if the accidence was done last night or this morning but the son had the gun in his hands and was acting with it and his sister was going out of the door and he pointed it at her and let it off and shot her in the breast and killed her on the spot there is trouble for that man and woman the funerell will be tomorrow "

Subject: MONARO PIONEERS - Correction of Information for William Charles Darragh & Mary Gertrude Nadin

Hi Ian,

I would like to correct the following information on the Monaro Pioneers website about my great great grandfather William Charles Darragh (son of John Joseph Darragh and Annie Farrell) and my great great grandmother Mary Gertrude Nadin (daughter of Arthur Ernest Nadin and Rose Bridget O’Toole). The Monaro Pioneers website states that Mary Gertrude Nadin married William Francis McGee Darragh (son of Felix Darragh and Alice). However, this is incorrect – Mary Gertrude Nadin (daughter of Arthur Ernest Nadin and Rose Bridget O’Toole) married William Charles Darragh (son of John Joseph Darragh and Annie Farrell) on 29 October 1907 at the Catholic Church in Kyogle NSW. She died on 25 June 1908 - 4 weeks after giving birth to my great grandmother Mary Gertrude Therese Darragh from puerperal fever (a childbirth related illness).  After the death of my great great grandmother, William Charles Darragh did marry Mary Rose Byrne – however this was obviously his second marriage not his first, as indicated on the Monaro Pioneers website.

Finally, I would just like to say what a fantastic resource the Monaro Pioneers website is – it is a credit to all those involved.
Thank you,
Amanda Clark.

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for bringing that discrepancy to my attention, hopefully now we have the information displayed correctly.

Ian

Good afternoon Ian,

Hi my name is Marleen Irish (nee Anderson). I am currently researching my family tree and believe I have found one of my ancestors on your website (wonderful detail). My ancestor is Mary Galbraith McKinnon (Great Grandmother). At the time of her marriage to Fredrick Mary would have had a six year old daughter called Heather McKinnon (DOB 27/1/1920). Marys’ parents were Norman McKinnon & Flora McNeill McKinnon (nee Galbraith).
Marys’ DOB is 22/9/1902 at Echuca Victoria (per Echuca registration records).
My main query is whether there were any children as a result of this marriage, as there were no lineage details on Frederick.
Thanks so much for any assistance you may be able to give in regards to this.
Yours truly
Marleen Irish.

Hi Marleen,

We have not been supplied with any offspring information for this family as yet. But the NSW BDM Index does show a daughter Elizabeth who died in 1930 in Sydney.

On her death registration in 1916 her parents are given as Thomas Baragry and Harriet Hunt but when I checked the records in Ireland I found a Patrick as her father.
I believe that she may be a sister to Denis Baragry born 1834 in Tipperary as listed on your webpage.
I have the Parish and Townland of Denis in Tipperary from the Griffith Valuations of 1851 if anyone is interested. Do you have a contact for this family at all please?

I am not sure if I am contacting the right source, but I wanted to inform someone who has researched the Bellchambers family name/history of something I have recently come across. My mother recently got sick, had surgeries, and we placed her in an assisted living. When her "valuables" were taken out of a lockbox, I found a document which was very interesting. It is a document/certificate granting Robert Bellchambers citizenship in the U.S. It is dated March 14, 1869. It is the original document of citizenship with seal and signatures from the state of New York. My grandmother was a care giver to Mr. Bellchambers many years ago, and then also to his sister Roberta Bellchambers. When my grandmother passed away, I am sure she passed her documents on to my mother and this is how she came to have them in her possession. I wondered if there were any family still living who are relatives of these specific Bellchambers. I did not see these specific names on the website. Contact me if someone has an interest in this document. Thankyou

 Hi Linda,

We have no information on these two individuals you reference below. Are they associated with Bellchambers families on our site?

Hi Ian,

Re. Venables - Richard - Thomas & Ellen - Edward - Catherine - Frederick -line
Great work on the MP website & newsletter - such a wonderful resource! Thank you all.

Dorothy Mulvihill (nee Crane) asked me to email you these old photos for inclusion on the relevant Monaro Pioneers sites. I scanned many photos for her & picked out some which you may be able to include on the Venables page. Some are unknown, so hopefully someone out there may be able to identify them. Hope these attachments come through OK. Please let me know. If you require more information, Dorothy's email is: dorothymulvihill@hotmail.com or I may be able to help as well.

I will send a separate email with the Venables photos as there are quite a few!!

Kind regards,
Maree Myhill

Thank you Maree,

Regards,
Ian

Hi Gavin,

I use the software package called Legacy to manage the Monaro Pioneers Database. The process is simple, you send your contribution to me and I add it to the database and republish and webpages that are impacted.

If you can supply your information in a gedcom file I would appreciate it. If that is not possible then any format will be OK.

Hi Michelle

I have just been checking out the Monaro Pioneers website again. Haven't looked for a while but I see that you are still the contact for the newsletter. I used to receive it but haven't for a year or more. I have sent a few emails to find out what had happened but have had no replies.  I've had this email address for quite a few years now so feel that this is not the problem. Anyway, not to worry why, I would like to receive the newsletter if it is still going please.

Thank you

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Barker and Gottaas

Hi Ian,
It’s me again.

Another family for you
BARKER
William Barker, born Lolworth, Cambridgeshire, UK and christened 16 Oct 1815, son of Thomas Barker and Rachel Maltpress Married Mary Gilson 13 Oct 1850 Lolworth, UK.  Mary Gilson, born Kings Ripton, Huntingdonshire, UK, christened 20 Jan 1828, daughter of Abbot Gilson and Sarah Harrold (his second wife).

Shipping records give Mary’s mother as Mary, but that would be her stepmother – Abbot’s third wife. I note in the Gottaas register Mary’s surname is given as Gibson. I originally made the same mistake when transcribing handwritten records, and I have had both names, Gilson and Gibson, from professional transcription agents. Going back to the UK sources – the St Cath’s index is alphabetical. I have a photocopy of the Marriage Registration and it is quite clearly handprinted in capital letters. It is definately Gilson.  William and Mary are listed as living with his parents at Lolworth on the 1851 Census.

William and Mary came to Australia on the Meteor, departing Southampton 17 March 1853 and arriving in Sydney 3 July 1853.  Children of William and Mary
Samuel - b Lolworth c 6 March 1853. Died on voyage to Australia 1853.
Sarah – b 18 June 1854 – Wanniassa. (Marriage and Death details give birthplace as Tuggeranong, Queanbeyan, but Queanbeyan Christening Register states Wanniassa.) m Elias Gottaas 12 Dec 1876 moved to the coast circa 1904 d 20 Aug 1930 Bimbaya. Cause of death Cerebral Haemorrhage, Senility . Buried 21 Aug 1930 Candelo.(Have transcription Death Cert). Her obituary appeared in the Cooma Monaro Express Mon 1 September 1930.
William – b 1 June 1857 – Jinderbine (Cooma Christening Register) m Annie Muir 1882 Cooma. d 1939 Bega William’s family are listed in the book Bega Valley Pioneer Register. I would only be copying out details from there, but can do so if required.
John – b 12 Jan 1861 Bullumbalong d 1866
Thomas – b 6 Dec 1864 Biggam m Jessie Hay 30 Jan 1889 d 31 Dec 1938 Bega.
Charles – b 13 Oct 1866 Biggam (Caretaker of School of Arts in Adaminaby).

William’s occupation is given variously as Ag Lab, shepherd, farmer, miller and labourer.
William Barker died 23 Feb 1883.

Cooma newspapers unavailable, but the Queanbeyan Age on 6 March 1883 gave it one sentence:
"An old man named Barker accidently fell into a waterhole near his residence at Biggam, near Cooma, and was drowned before assistance could be obtained." Coroners Inquest recorded "accidently drowned". He was buried 26 Feb 1883 at Round Plain. (Have transcription Death Cert)
According to the Probate Index Mary Barer died 13 Feb 1890, but I have been unable to find a corresponding Death Certificate. (If anyone has it I’d love a copy!)

A few additions for Gottaas
Elias –also known as Louie occupation is also given as Carpenter and ship’s carpenter. d 9 Aug 1894. Cause of death – Inflammation of bowels. Buried Round Plain 11 Aug 1894.

Children of Elias and Sarah
William – died 18 Oct 1956 at Bemboka
Thomas Barker – died 6 May 1951. Buried Candelo.
Selina Louisa – died 20 May 1968. Buried Candelo.

Children of Selina Louisa Gottaas and Robert John Ball

Norman Elias- b 19 March 1905
Amy M – b 21 Nov 1906
Vera – b 5 July 1908 Married Vic Heffernan

Hope this is of some use
Sue

Subject: MARY ANN OWERS - 1848 to Unknown

Dear Ian

I have been scanning through the website Monaro Pioneers, specifically children of Abraham and Alice Owers. My Mary Ann Owers married William Walsh in Braidwood 1869. They would have been my paternal great great grandparents. I am wondering why Mary Ann does not appear as a child of Abraham and Alice in the Monaro Pioneers. I have attached a copy of her Baptism for your information.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
Kaylene Hardley

Hi Kaylene,

The information on Mary Ann Owers is not included because until now we have not been aware of her existence. Our material is derived from contributions or by our own research and in this case neither has happened yet.

Perhaps you might care to contribute her tree information to rectify the omission. There was no attachment unfortunately.

Ian

There is an IGI entry for James. Apparently he died on 30 Jun 1909 buried the next day at the old cemetery (Pioneer?) in Tumut.  None of James' siblings seem to have left Sydney. This is why I'll get his death or marriage certificate - to ensure we have the right James. Assuming it is, I wonder why someone would leave Sydney and take up residence at Lacmalac - a wee place at the best of times.

Hi John,

Sounds good to me, I shall change our records. There is no way that James could have been born in Tumut as there was no white presence in the area until well after that date. I have no means of knowing where the 1817 Ireland information came from but now that is obviously wrong. I can find no Index entry for James' death, have you seen a certifcate for that date?

Were there any other children from Thomas and Susanna who pioneered the Monaro/Tumut area?

Ian

Subject: RE: James Day 1815

G'day Ian

First Families shows the lineage of Thomas Day Snr having a child Thomas in 1795. Thomas (Age 21) married Susanna 1816 (Age 18). She died 1832. He remarried 1833. Before that they had 6 children (BDM NSW) dates from 1818 - 1827 (James). (I can find no BDM records relation to the birth of Thomas from a Samuel.)

My wife is a direct descendent of Benjamin Day (b1860 d1939)- one of James' 11 children. Benjamin's birth record shows James Day/Mary Jane Harmer as parents - so that establishes her provenance on Jame's side of the equation.  Your question is valid though and we are constantly faced with this puzzlement when we attack the family history. I guess I can ask you what proof have you that James was born in 1815 in Ireland? I note that IGI has him born in Tumut about 1815. The answer lies in his death certificate which I will get. Susanna Stubbs also published her memoirs - a copy of which is in the National Library. I've requested a copy. That might throw a bit more light on her children.

Hi John,

Could you please explain why you claim that the James Day we have who married Mary Jane Harmer was born 1827 and not about 1815-17? I can see from the existing research that Thomas Day and Susanna Stubbs had a child James born January 5 1827 but I don't see any evidence of this James being the husband of Mary Jane Harmer. Do you have evidence to support James Day (1827) being the husband of Mary Jane? Also from what I can see most researchers have Thomas Day who married Susanna Stubbs as the son of Samuel Day.

I don't profess to know the details of this family but we need to be sure before we make such changes.

Ian

Hi Ian

I believe this is an error in your genealogical record. James was actually born in 1827 in Sydney. Son of Thomas Day and Susanna Stubbs. One of several children. Grandfather/grandmother were second fleeter. - Thomas Day/Mary Clayton.

Hi Ian,

http://www.monaropioneers.com/Bower-James.htm

I notice you have the wrong surname for the mother of Anna Elizabeth "Bessie" White (wife of Herbert John Bower) on the above page.

It should be Anna Younger KERR. I attach a copy of her parents' marriage certificate. I have a lot more information about the family if you are interested.

Also, I'm interested in where I might expect to find the headstones of the senior Bowers who died at Candelo.

Kind wishes,

Bruce

Thank you for the information, we are certainly interested in any further information you may wish to contribute on the Bower family. I suggest you try the Bega Valley Historical society for the gravestone information.

Regards,
Ian
