Hi Judy,

Thanks. The registration entries before 1856 were church registry entries usually baptisms so without actually seeing the certificates it is very hard to know.

Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] question re convict assigned to Richard Guise

Hello Pattrick
I have a ticket of leave passport (No 43/394 dated 4 April 1843) for my ancestor James Hartley (arrived Speke I on 18 May 1821 to Macarthur at Sutton Forest) which states "allowed to travel between the Murrumbidge and Sydney in the service of Mr Richard Guise Imr (?) for 12 months on the application of Mr Guise." I was wondering whether the Richard Guise (junior) in the Monaro Pioneer Register was the same Richard Guise. The internet only brings up Richard (Monaro Pioneers) and the death of Richard Guise as the earliest burial into the Liverpool cemetry. James Hartley's ticket of leave (dated 7 March 1836) indicates alteration (30th October) from him remaining in Goulburn to Yass. Is there any record of Richard Jnr's assigned convicts with his Yass property (or other properties), especially given the travel reference in the passport the name of James Hartley? Any enlightenment on this would be appreciated.
Thank you
regards, Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,

Everything thing we have is already displayed on the website, unfortunately there is no reference to your convict.  It is most likely Richard Guise Junior was the right person.  There may be records in the state or national libraries that could help.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian
Thanks for your reply. I've had the ticket of leave passport since 1987 but only just got the family history out of storage and thanks to internet (which wasn't around back then) I got all excited in checking the Guise family in relation to the info on the passport. There's a difference between assumption and confirmation so I will keep looking further afield. Thanks for your help.
regards, Suzanne

Hello Ian,

I haven't emailed for some time but I regularly read the Monaro Pioneers. My maternal g/grandfather, William Hayes married Sarah Anne Morris in 1888, her parents are down as William Morris and Anne. Anne's surname was Goodwin and they married at Sutton Forest on 13th June 1866,I will send the certificate copy as an attachment. I hope that this will fill in some gaps and probably start a new branch of investigation. Do keep up the good work.

Ian,

I have just visited your informative web site and note that some reference is made to my great-grandfather, Edmund Hewison, who was the early Town Clerk and Engineer at Cooma Council. I also understand that he was the first school teacher in that town, from old copies of his death notices retained by myself. He passed away whilst owner/editor of the Moss Vale Scrutineer in 1913. I have an original photograph taken of Edmund whilst seated at his desk and of which a copy may be of interest to yourself and associates, and in which case I can download. I have included it in a self-published book of my childhood whilst growing up in Hurstville (titled Crossed my Mind). I have included some small information regarding my great-grandfather, but it may not be of sufficient interest or quantity to be of much use to you. However, if thought to be, I will happily forward a book for your interest - no obligation, of course. I might add, that I am 76 and live at Tweed Heads on the far NSW north coast.

Regards, Frederick Hewison

Hi Fred,

Thank you for the information and the offer.  We would be delighted to display a photo of Edmund. I have created a Pioneers Index entry for Edmund, please let me know if you detect any errors or omissions. Any further information would be most gratefully received. Incidentally, I live in Sylvania and you would hardly recognise Hurstville now.

Regards, Ian

Hello Ian,

I hope these don't take too long to download, especially if they don't prove of much interest. On page 1 of the relevant "Descendants of Edmund Hewison" you will see that Edmund had a daughter Emmeline (in which case, she was one of my great aunts.) On page 2 (3) it is recorded that she married Gustave "Gus" F. C. Miller whom I always knew was the MLA for Monaro - a position he held for a record thirty years. I confess though that I was never aware of his exact relationship and I must admit also that this incredibly astounding information that you have forwarded me has in the words of the young, "Left me gob-smacked." Thank you immensely. If you care to receive a copy of my book there is a small section relating to that era. If you are interested, forward your postal address and I will gladly send a copy. I will also enclose any additional information I can find in the old family album.

Regards,

Fred Hewison

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the images, I have added them to the Hewison page. We have no physical library unfortunately so we are not able to use your kind offer of a copy of your book at this time.

Subject: The Nadin Family from Candelo

Dear Ian

I noticed an error re John Nadin son of John and Mary Ann Nadin nee Youde.  He is shown as being born in 1862 in Eden NSW, and dying in 1877 aged 15 years.

He was born in Manchester 29 Jul 1852, came to Port Phillip Bay in 1852 aged 6 mths.

Kind regards, Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Thank you for the information. According to the NSW BDM Index there was another John Nadin born 1862 to a John and Mary A Nadin in Eden, can you tell me if this person is also son of John Nadin  1830-1896?

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian

It is rather complicated.  The John born in England was evidently not baptised there.

The parents had him baptised here: V1852287 42A/1852

NADIN

JOHN

JOHN

ANN

The family was in Victoria in 1852, arriving on the "Chasley" December 1852. The registration of the birth of Arthur Nadin was a mixup:

Arthur was registered on the Birth Certificate by his father as John.  His father's occupation was given as dairyman, aged 33 years.  The first son, John, born in England in 1852 was 11 years old at the time but as he was ill and crippled perhaps his father wanted to call the new baby John.  Or it could have been an error.  I have a copy of the birth certificate.  He was always known as Arthur Ernest, he was married as such and died as such, 22 Feb 1947 at Kyogle. On 29 Mar 1863  Arthur Ernest was born to John and Mary Ann Reg No 07448, and he was baptised on 17th August 1864 in the Bega Parish. (Church of England Index of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for the South Eastern Corner of NSW), he was baptised as Arthur Ernest. Any furher help I can supply, please let me know.  Attached my notes on Arthur.

Cheers, Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for letting me know.  I would appreciate any further information you can contribute.

Hi Ian
I was looking at the Monaro Pioneers web site and have an interest in a family but couldn't find who the contributors were. My interest is Margaret Ann Mead, Daughter of William Arthur Mead, person 83. Margaret married Archibald Clyde McLennan in 1948. Archibald, known as Clyde was born in 1920 and served in the Australian Army. I am looking for anyone with family ties to Margaret and Clyde McLennan.
Many Thanks, Lisa McMurray – Canada

Hi Lisa,

Unfortunately we have no known contact for this person.  He has been included in our database simply because of his marriage to Margaret Mead and we have no knowledge of his parentage.

Dear Ian

I have recently found your website which is very interesting, congratulations on a great effort. I am a bit of a family history 'nut' and have done a lot on my own family. A very close friend of mine who passed away from cancer 2 years ago had little knowledge of her family and I helped her to find her ancestry just prior to that time. The family tree is listed under Davidson on Ancestry. I found that she is a great grandaughter of Edward Alexander Crawford (b1864 in Cooma). Here however we have the skeleton in the Crawford family closet. Edward left Mary (Venables) to have a second family with Emily Elizabeth Peasley and this is the family my friend comes from. I have attached my information which you may want to add to your data base. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Here is the ancestry chart for my mother, Jean Barbara Godfrey, daughter of Military Medal recipient WW1 William Edgar Godfrey, born Candelo, 1890. William's father Andrew James Godfrey's birth father was John Gillett but the man whom Eliza Doyle married and raised him was William Thomas Godfrey. I can send you his details too. Please find attached a photo of William Edgar Godfrey during WW1. Hope this can be included in the Pioneers of the Monaro district alongside Samuel Josiah Williams' ( Andrew Godfrey married Margery Williams, Sam's daughter).

There will also need to be a correction in the RUSSELL section. Robert SMITH (1864-1939) was not the son of John SMITH & Mary Ann (WHOLOHAN). I obtained the birth certificate of Robert SMITH b.1864 Nimmitabel.  According to his birth certificate, Robert SMITH was born on 8 May 1864 at Coolamatong and was the son of John SMITH, cook, of Coolamatong, 39 years, born Derby ENG and ‘Mary late McLeary late Turner’, 43 years, born Louth IRE. John and Mary were married on 24 May 1858 in Sydney and had an older son Joseph Thomas, living.  [Ref: NSW Birth Certificate 1864/007732] I obtained the death certificate of Robert SMITH d.1939 Cooma and buried CE Cemetery, Cooma. According to his death certificate, Robert SMITH was 77 and born Cooma. He was the son of John SMITH, cook, and Mary (TURNER). He married Ellen RUSSELL when he was 27 and at the time of his death he had six children living and one son and one daughter deceased. [Ref: NSW Death Certificate 1939/014432]

Please add me to your newsletter subscribers. I am stuck on a family history problem. Is there someone I can ask please? My great grandmother Catherine Conley (married name Stores) was born in Tumut  in 1848. She is the daughter of Daniel Conelly, a tradesman / shoemaker, and according to Catherine's death certificate, Mary Ann Healy. According to Catherines'  baptismal certificate her mother was Mary Tracey. They lived in Gilmore Creek at the time of Catherine's birth. Daniel and mary/Ann had four children including Catherine.  I would be so grateful for any knowledge of the family or any suggestions as to how I might find out more.

With thanks, Donna Gibbs

Hi Donna,

The attached file contains what we have on the Connolly (Connelly, Conely, Connelley, Connolley) family. There are lots of gaps so this information is only preliminary and you may be able to add to or correct what we have.

Regards, Ian

Thanks very much, Ian. There is a lot of helpful information here and some I can expand a little. I will work on it and get back to you. I am still uncertain about Daniel Conelly's wife's name - it seems likely Catherine, their daughter's baptismal certificate which has Tracey as the surname (abode Gilmore Creek) is correct. The info on her death certificate  giving healy as her maiden name was provided by a son-in-law so may be less accurate. But maybe there were two wives? Not sure. Will let you know if I find out. If anyone could look at one of the other children's birth certificates that might clear it up.

Thanks again, Donna

Subject: Addition to the John G Belcher / Thomas Power family tree's

Hi Ian,

Not hugely significant but I would like to make an addition to the John G Belcher / Thomas Power family tree’s. No 7. Of the Belcher tree:

Robert Edward Belcher marries Elsie J Devine and they are listed as having one female child decease Elsie M in 1915.  There is also a second female child that dies in 1919 Maisie E Belcher

Births Deaths and Marriages record:

15398/1919

BELCHER

MAISIE E

ROBERT E

ELSIE J

JUNEE

Robert Belcher’s family also appear as number 22 on Thomas Power’s family tree. Also Elsie’s mother first name is Mary Anne (also written as Mary Ann) not just Mary and her maiden name is Coughlan as I have a copy of their marriage certificate. And I can prove this also with death record of one of Daniel and Mary Anne’s other children John

25440/1967

DEVINE

JOHN BYRNE

DANIEL

MARY ANNE

COOTAMUNDRA

As you can probably guess I also descend from one of Daniel and Mary Anne children.

Many Thanks, Katie Devine

Hi Katie,

Thank you for the information.

Regards, Ian

Thankyou for updating their records – final one they are also number 35 on Joseph Henry Chalker family tree.

Thanks again, Katie

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Gillespie Family

Hello
my Grandfather was a grandson of Thomas Gillespie. I have some additional information and would like my Grandfather's details included in the Gillespie lineage please from the excellent Monaro Pioneers Website,
"Michael married Elizabeth Winter in
1 April 1844 in Scots Church, Pitt Street, Sydney, NSW. Elizabeth was born in 1814 (disagree)and died in 1886 in Bega, NSW2 at age 72. Another name for Elizabeth was Eliza. " Elizabeth Winter dob 5 Jan 1821 was sister to Ann Winter dob 2 Jan 1823 -wife of Daniel Tindall also on the Monaro Pioneers site. Their parents were James Winter and Elizabeth Hastings. James was a convict from Ashtead Surrey convicted of larceny and transported to Australia. James Winter  (Farmer and Cook}  aged 30 years, trial 17th October 1815 Surrey Quarter Sessions, crime : petty larcency, he arrived in Australia 24 April 1817 on board the convict ship "Shipley".  Elizabeth Hastings/Hasten/Haslen/Easton arrived in 1800 on "Speedy" (as Haslen) tried in 1798 in Maidstone Kent. She had an "irregular alliance" ( as Elizabeth Easton) with George Howe who started the first newspaper in the colony and had several children 1803-1810. She married ( as Elizabeth Hastings) James Winter 16 Aug 1819. When she died, aged 42 in 1828 the two sisters Anne and Elizabeth are placed in the Parramatta Orphanage and their Father James Winter is living at Kent Street , Sydney.

4. Thomas Gillespie (Michael1) was born in 1847 in NSW7 and died in 1897 in Bega, NSW8 at age 50. Thomas married Margaret Perry in 1872 in Bega, NSW.53t
Margaret Perry was the daughter of Peter Perry/Pirie and Elizabeth Ann Brown (her parents Elizabeth Ann Brown and William Brown I haven't been able to trace). She was the daughter of convict Peter Pirie.
Burrell male convict ship carrying 192 prisoners, from 26 June 1830 to 3 January 1831, sailing to Sydney, New South Wales. 3 brothers on board.

The brothers  appear to work on farms after arriving in Australia. When Peter earned his “Ticket of Leave” he married in July 1839 calling himself Peter Hepbarn PERRY , Musician ( of Twofold Bay). The Perry family settled to the South of Sydney and appear to work in the timber getting game. They also associated with Bushrangers (Goulbourn)and had some minor infringements listed. The family continued to be listed as Perrys. I think the Thomas Perry in the Monaro Pioneers listed with dob 1811 may well be younger brother Thomas Perry.

from the Monaro Pioneers site. Thomas married Margaret Perry in 1872 in Bega, NSW.

( I have that Margaret Perry died 25 Jan 1901 Bega Hospital )

F    viii. Maud Gillespie was born in 1889 in Moruya, NSW.63

don't know who Alfred was but my Grandfather was Albert Ernest Gillespie(aka Ben) dob 6 Jun 1880 and died 30 Mar 1945, Southport Qld
He married Marion Elizabeth Yaun on 8 Jun 1918, Upper Nerang Qld. They had 1 son and 4 daughters, of which my Mother, Margaret (named after her Father's Mother Margaret Perry )was the eldest girl. An Aunt has a portrait of the red-haired and bearded Thomas Gillespie and dark-haired Margaret Perry. Alex worked with Ben,had diabetes and died young and Ben brought Jane, May and Maud to Qld  when their parents died. Ben was a grazier and cattle farmer.
I can provide details of the decendants of Ben and Maud and some for Alex and May and Jane if that is appropriate, hope this may be of interest to Gillespie relatives

Subject: For the monaro web site

Hi Ian. I would like to ask you some questions, and to supply you with some answers to blanks on the pioneer web site.

First can you or some one out there tell me exactley where abouts is Gygederick located. The lands department told me Gyederick was a town 2km east by south of Berridale. Jeffs creek never had a population, so was never a town. But is a water course 5 km long near Gyederick. All my Great Grand fathers children were born there.

Now for some answers to put into  your web site.

Mary Jane Martin married Thomas Kennedy  4th March 1866 in the Roman Catholic church Tarraville Gippsland Victoria.(561)

Thomas Kennedy was the son of Maurice Kennedy and Mary Mc Grath. Born in Tippirary.Ireland.

Mary Martin was born in Tyrone Ireland.About 1843 Father Thomas Martin a Ships Captain. Mother Mary.

In 1867 a daughter was born Mary Ellen Mabel in N.S.W (8448)

Then on 30th December1867 Mary Jane Kennedy nee Martin married James Bennett in the Roman Catholic Church in Cooma N.S.W (2067) His parents are Roley Bennett. Mary Tyrell

On the 3rd March 1869 a son was born named James Bennett.(9760)

1884 Mary Ellen Kennedy married a Tammy Ahyet  Cooma (5783)

1886 William AhYet was born.(26447)

1916 Tammy AhYet died in Cooma N.S.W

In the Gygederick cemetery there is a grave for James Bennett's 1st wife Marry Gilligan born in Drymnabay Queens County Ireland she left behind 4 Daughters. She died on the 4.12.1859 aged 47 years.

Jonn Allan Richardson married  Adeline Tickle in Saint Pauls church Cooma N.S.W  18.3.1904 Fathers name Samuel mothers name Sarah Phillips.

James Bennett Jnr all his children are already on the pioneer site.

Hope this imformation fills in some of the gaps on the site and may be of help to others.

Thanking you, O.W. Richardson

Hi,

Thank you for the information. Do you have any information on the 4 daughters mentions for James Bennett and Mary Gilligan?  I think I have identified two (Catherine and Mary Anne) but the other two elude me so far.  Do you know when the family arrived in Australia? I have created a Pioneers Index entry for Mary Jane Martin. This email has been copied to our newsletter editor so I am sure there will be someone in our readership who will be able answer your questions on Gegedzerick ( Gygederick).

PS.There is also the connection between the Moffats( it) of the area  and there intermarriage with the Williams family.  I believe that there is also a Clan Moffat website which would be most interested in the Moffatt/ Moffitt information as it appears that there is little  information about this branch of the family.

Subject: Cooma family - Shingles/Venables

Hi Patrick,

I've been researching my husband's family and did in the past contact you with the limited details I had but to no avail. I have now got a few extra details that might help as everything seems to come back to the Cooma region. Edna Merle Shingles was born around 1920 either in Cooma or later came to live in Cooma.  Her mother was unmarried at the time and very young when she gave birth to Edna.  Her mother went on to marry a Venables when Edna was 2 (around 1922).  Her stepfather never adopted Edna as she was not his child. She had one half sister and several half brothers but never spoke much about her family and we believe it was because she felt out of place as she was illegitimate. My mother in law believes her sister was named Thelma and when I located an Isabella May Shingles who married an Isaac Venables in 1922 the names did seem familiar to her and the dates seem to mesh. Edna Merle Shingles married Reginald George Anderson (who we believe had changed his name) in 1939 in Cooma.  They are listed as 1195/1939 and their first child Ronald Anthony was born on 15 November 1939.  As they were the 1195 marriage listed in NSW in 1939 we are left to wonder if Edna was pregnant at the time. Can you help me at all with any of these further details? It is a bit of a mystery but I definately seem to have an illegitimate Shingles daughter from Cooma in the family tree.

Thanks, Ellani Anderson

Hi Ellani,

Thank you for the information.  I have republished the webpage for Joseph Frederick Shingles to reflect these new facts. Please let me know if you detect any errors or omissions.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the update, as soon as I have confirmation I will pass it on to you.  I am trying to locate the birth/death certificates for Edna.  The other details I have for you are as follows: Edna and Reginald had three children

Ronald Anthony

Melody died aged 18 (from pancreatic cancer I believe)

Carol

Reginald, Edna and Melody are buried at Point Clare cemetery.

Can I ask if you have any contact or further details on Leslie Venables?  I am wondering if his family would have any further details on Edna or can confirm any of these details and maybe give us some light on the subject of her husband who had changed his name to Reginald Anderson before they married.

Thanks, Ellani Anderson

Hi Ellani,

Any contact information we have would be shown on the Venables or Shingles web pages.  David may have an address in his newsletter distribution list.

Hello Pattrick,
Just going through some papers, and found this small article, last paragraph sounds familiar!

C.M.E. 11 Jan 1898  Nimitybelle,
"The town is enveloped in blinding smoke from the bush fires raging in the direction of Coghill's Flat, Kydra and Mountain Top.

A thunderstorm broke over the town this afternoon, out of which 25 points were recorded, and which improved the great volume of smoke,
and which no doubt, is something to quench the fires. The weather during the last few weeks has been very oppressive, the thermometer

showing daily fro 90 to 100 in the shade, the latter figure being much in evidence. The McLachan River has ceased running and creeks and

lakes are completely dry; the grass is plentiful, but dry; the water is the only drawback. Every appearance of rain setting in now  9/2/98

Dear Ian,
I have just been reading through the newsletter and noticed the comments re Blewitt and copywrite. I do not wish to butt in but wasn't sure if you knew the copywite laws on genealogy...In fact "facts" cannot be copywrited. Dates, names, places of birth and death CANNOT be copywrited,,,ONLY the format/style someone  creates to display them in. Facts belong to all of us and are not intellectual property as noone thought them up or designed them,,,they are just facts.
Stories added into someones tree, written by said person can be copywrited,,,BUT NOT the FACTS contained in the story. (just the style-intellectual input/setup- of the story). I hope that makes sense to you. I see from your reply there was no issue of copywrite anyway, but just thought for future reference it may be helpful to know.

Kellie
Hi Kellie,

Thank you very much for that very interesting piece of information.  I am much better informed now and I am sure our readers will also appreciate your input.

Hi Ian,
Just on a side note. I live in Queanbeyan on the next corner from the Riverside Cemetery..as we know alot of it was washed away during floods and alot of what is left is decaying. If anyone would like photo's of headstones (what is left and readable) I would be more than happy. I actually began taking photo's of some of the worst ones a while ago and saving them on my computer. I also have access to ihr.com.au which has quite alot of NSW stuff if anyone needs something checked..(it has the full lists of 1807/71 and 1878/79 Electoral Rolls, plus 1903 , plus certain land leases/purchases etc.

Subject: Alfred Reed & Margaret Schofield m.1879

Hi.

Note you have Alfred as the son of George Joseph Reed & Annie Millington. George was born in 1845.  George & Annie married in 1875.  Alfred would have been born circa 1855-60.  Doesn't seem logical that George & Annie would be his parents.  If anything, Alfred could be a brother of George Joseph's?  Requires further research for sure.

Regards, Don Herbert

Hi Don,

Good point, well spotted.  I shall investigate.

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian.

Here's another mess I found yesterday (and I don't mean just on the Monaro site).  I'll call it out the long way to assist you.  Again.  This is how my data records the events, so that doesn't make it absolutely right, of course...

Bridget BELL - is actually Bridget Bishop, dau. of Michael Bishop & Catherine Maloney.  Her mum Catherine later married Roger Bell.  She may well have been raised by Roger, but maintained the surname Bishop.

Bridget's first child (illegitimate) was Mary Anne Bishop, raised as a Murphy.  She married John Thomas LIDDELL (some record Liddle, which does seem to be incorrect).  Mary & John died in Victoria, with 4 issues.  Some researchers have John Thomas Liddell's wife as Mary Isabella Murphy and so on.  Just can't be right.

Bridget married John Murphy and had 7 children.  Why dau.s Catherine & Bridget's DC record the father as James I don't know.  It's either an error, or may refer to their eldest brother James, or even their grandfather?

Dau. Mary's DC records the father as John.

Son James as John.

Son John as John.

Son William as John.

Son Edward as John.

Son Martin as John.

John Murphy's parents were James Murphy & Mary Maloney.  I wonder if Bridget's mum was related to husband John's mother?  Husband John was previously married, but to whom is unknown.

Bridget later married John Reynolds, following the death of husband John Murphy.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Don

Hi Don,

Well that certainly was a challenge to sort out but thanks to your help and prompting I think I have it fixed now. I have attached a file for Catherine Maloney showing what we now have in the database.  Please let me know what you think.

Hi, Ian

I have just checked this website and found an error that needs attention. Under William Russell,  Edwin Russell is listed as the second child. Edwin Russell was my Great Grandfather and I have done heaps of work on his family. Edwin is not the son of this William. My Edwin does not appear to be related in any way to this William Russell family. All his descendants – many generations- are intertwined in this chart but should be entirely separate.

Edwin was born c1837 in Westbury, Buckinghamshire, England. His parents were William Russell and Eleanor “Helen” Franklin. Edwin travelled to Australia on the “Euphrates” in 1855. He married 2 sisters, 1- Sarah Brown and 2- Charlotte Brown. Edwin’s son, William Edwin Russell, was my Grandfather and his son, Percy, was my Father.

Joan

Hi Joan,

Thank you for bringing that error to my attention, I have rectified our records accordingly.

Hi Ian,

I have just been given a pile of papers that belonged to my Grandfather Eli Abraham Lovelock. Amongst it all there are a huge number of "Australian Worker's Union" receipts etc for a James Bryant dated from 1888 through to 1912. The areas concerned are all over Australia and I cannot find the connection to our family tree. There must be a connection somewhere as we have all these papers. Can somebody who is connected to him shed light on this for me and if so I will send a copy of all these papers to them. Some are very fragile and require delicate handling. Thanks and keep up the good work as this is a brilliant site.

Cheers, Mary Pipe

Hi Mary,

Sorry, I don't know of any connection unfortunately. Do you have any old photos that might be useful to our project?

Firstly I would like to say what a wonderful site you have. It is so informative and easy to manouvre around. I would however, like to make a small correction. You have William Frederick Livingstone as having a second marriage. William is my grandfather (paternal) and I can confirm that when he died (15.12.1940) he was still married to my grandmother - Phyllis. I have a transcription of his death certificate. Phyllis died in Sydney on 29.05.1977. If anyone can give me any information regarding the Tyler/Hammond/Livingstone families it would be greatly appreciated. I am only just starting my research and the Monaro Pioneers has been so helpful.

Kindest regards. Diane Steedman

Subject: Minor correction to Tozer file

Dear Ian

Hi. My name is Sally Easterbrook, and I'm the granddaughter of Mary Agnes Tozer from Jingera. Mary is  the daughter of William Edward Tozer (no 16) and Ellen Margaret Corey. I have a small correction for you please. You have my grandmother's marriage listed under Mary Alice Tozer (1897-1964), who is the daughter of Albert Edward Tozer (no 7). Mary Agnes Tozer from Jingera married George T Ross on 22/12/1924. Mary was 17, George 25. Marriage Cert ref no 1924/017404. George was the school teacher at Jingera school from the mid 1920's to 1939.

I have just spent a couple of days in the State Records Office at Kingswood looking at the records from Jingera, Jerangle and Anembo Schools. While by no means complete, they provide an interesting social history of that small area, particularly the feuding that went on in the early 1900s between the folk at Anembo and Jerangle. They contain maps, usually hand-drawn, of where families lived and some snippets of life as it was at the turn of the C19th. I would be very happy to contribute a history of Jingera, Jerangle, Anembo and Norongo Schools if it would be appropriate for the site, as I live only 15 minutes drive from the Records Office and could go back and gather more detailed information. (I have only really been looking at my own family to date). Would this information be useful to you, and at what date would you like me to stop? The records are divided into pre-1939 and post 1939, I have only looked at the pre- 1939.

Also, have you heard of a property in the Captain's Flat area called "Whiperick"? George Ross was living there at the time of his marriage to Mary Agnes, and I'm assuming it must be reasonably close to Jingera /Bredbo / Captains Flat, to have allowed him to meet her. Looking forward to hearing from you sometime.

Regards, Sally

Hi Sally,

Thank you for correcting that error for us, the Tozer file is now updated. We would be very grateful if you could provide the school histories for our project.  The extent of the information has no limit so your own time is really the only limiting factor.  Obviously the more information the better. Unfortunately, we have no information on the property to which you refer.

Subject: Charles Solomon

Hi Pattrick,

I’m a little confused. I read the article on Charles Solomon(Monaro Pioneers) and think he may be a relative of mine, but I can see how at present.

The Charles Solomon I am related to is the husband of Selina Cohen and son of Vaiben Solomon (1798- 21 Jun 1860).

Charles was born 30 Nov 1842 in Sydney and died in Sydney 08 Jun 1915. He married Selina Cohen in 1862 and they had 10 children:

Rebecca born 1864 in Cooma

Lewis S born 1865 in Cooma

Kate born 1868 in Cooma

Henry Hyam born 1870 in Cooma

Reginald William born 1872 in Cooma died Sydney 1951

Maurice C born 1875 in Cooma died 25 Dec 1905 in Sydney

Maida E born 1877 in Cooma

Sara born 1880 in Cooma

Eliza R born and died in 1882 in Sydney

Clifford born in Cooma in 1884 died 1974

Any ideas?

“My” Charles Solomon would be my first cousin 3 times removed. His father Vaiben and his brother Emanuel were transported in 1818. Emanuel is my great, great, grandfather and he is extremely famous in Adelaide. There is much written about Emanuel Solomon and his relatives in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, but little about the later generations that stayed in NSW.My Sister and I are struggling to come to grips with this HUGE family and would love to know where all the pieces of the jig-saw fit.  Hope you can shed some light.

Best Wishes

Jenny Cowen

Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the inquiry, I can certainly see where the confusion arises.  We do have Charles Solomon in our database married to Selina Cohen in 1862 but with parents of Samuel and Rebecca.  The key link is the reference to the two boys Harry Hyam and Lewis Samuel in the article on our website.  It is definite there were 2 Charles Solomon's who died in 1915 as recorded in the NSW BDM Index, 1 in Cooma (the one in our database) and 1 in Sydney (yours).  Do you have any documentary evidence that your Charles Solomon married Selina Cohen?  Such as a copy of the marriage certificate which should show who his parents where?  Charles' death certificate would also list his children as further evidence.

Hi Ian,

Not sure if you have this info? Could not find in Pioneers!

Allow me to introduce myself.

My Name is Leon Bell, my father was Leon Bell also (Formally Bellchambers). The Son of an unwed Mary Ann Bellchambers Prior to her marrying Benjamin James Rixon. (See Birth Certificate attached which I got from Wollongong BDM in 1999 when down at Mittagong doing some research).

Also there was my father’s sister, May Clarice Bellchambers, born out of wedlock!

May was born 1888 (Berrima #18057), married James Buttenshaw  29/11/1911. To save writing as you may have some details already? Please advise via return email, or phone, if you require more info. Although it is not stated on my father’s birth certificate, my late mother told me that my father’s father was Edmond Bell a wool buyer? As a young boy this info went in one side and out the other!

Although it seemed strange to me that a Bell, should have had a child with a Bellchambers surnamed lady? Maybe this is why my father dropped the Bellchambers from his surname?

See attached some details of an Edmond Bell, could this be my father’s father?? I would appreciate any information or help you can provide (Especially photo’s).

Kind Regards, Leon Bell Jnr

Hi Ian
I am enclosing a print of Thomas Tracey's family in which I have highlighted variations on what is currently shown on the Monaro site. Some are merely dates but there are several corrections to be made viz.
1. Remove last para. of note on Thomas (except the first sentence). Mary married Thomas Stokes.
3(iii)Thomas Patrick did not marry
3(vi) Patrick married Ada Gates not Amy Cootes - see 12 on my print
10 (i) & (ii) Children of Bridget (as per death transcript) were Martin and Margaret not Ellen & James
18. Bridget and John McDonald had at least two more children & possibly more. I will check this further.

At 14 on my print I have highlighted the changes mentioned in John Woodward's email (today's newsletter) and at 40 I have added the  son referred to in Wayne Mara's email. Keep up the good work. The site is certainly of great value to the many interested but we can do without the small selfish minority who threaten legal action  as the solution to their perceived problems.

Subject: Hines family history

Dear Ian,

Could you please let me know if you cover the Kiama area. If so would you have any information on the family of William Alexander Hines and Sabina Hukins. They would have been in the area about 1856 - to circa 1867. They had several children born in Kiama at that time.

Julie Campbell

Hi Julie,

Sorry, Kiama is part of the Shoalhaven area and as such is not part of our scope of interest.  However, because of family connections we do have many families from the Shoalhaven in our database.  Unfortunately, the individuals you refer too are not known to us.

Regards, Ian

Subject: September Monaro Pioneers Newsletter

Hi Ian,

It doesn't seem that it is now possible to answer people direct who write into the newsletter like we use to be able to.  In reply to Dennis Blake's enquiry ( his ancestor being Samuel Williams) regarding the whereabouts of the Kameruka Records, the Bega Valley Genealogy Society has been given all these records

Regards Pat Raymond - Research Officer BVGS

Hi Pat,

Sorry about the fact that contributors email addresses aren’t included in the newsletter but I suppose it comes back to protecting people’s privacy and the like and not wishing to expose anyone to the Spam merchants.

Regards, David
