Hi Ian

I was hoping you would be able to put this picture in the next newsletter with a request for anyone who may be able to identify it.  We believe it is Edward Rolfe, circa 1908.  If anyone can confirm, contradict or in any way help I would be most grateful if they could contact me via email.

By the way - when is the next newsletter expected to go out?

Best wishes, Sheena Johnson

Subject: Additions to Venables & Osmond family trees

Dear Ian,

Herewith are some additions and changes to the family trees of both Thomas Venables and John Osmond, which are lodged on the Monaro Pioneers' Website.

I'm pleased to say that I can now supply the hitherto missing particulars of the death of CARLYLE CLAUDE ASPREY OSMOND (born 18 July 1893) --  the second son of Fanny Jane Venables (1863-1896) and her husband, George James Osmond (1864-1955). He died (while on vacation) at Surfers Paradise, Queensland, on 18 August 1969, and is buried in the Garden of Memories at Surfers Paradise cemetery.

Also, the date of the birth of his spouse, MONA MAGDALENE MULLEN, needs to be amended to 11 February 1897 (at Warrandyte, Victoria). Mona died on 29 December 1975, at Reservoir, Victoria.

I am greatly obliged to Peter Osmond and Sue Morissey for supplying the above information.

Finally, the two family trees currently omit the names of all the SIX offspring of the sister of Carlyle Claude Asprey Osmond, namely STELLA TAMZEN MURIEL SYBIL OSMOND (1890-1991), and her husband, John Wilfrid Gibbes. They are in chronological order:

1. Sheila Mary Jamison Gibbes  (born Redfern, NSW, 1907; died Northbridge, NSW, 2002), did not marry.

2. Frederick Jamison Gibbes (born Mosman, NSW, 1909; died Wahroonga, NSW, 1981), married, North Sydney, NSW, 1943, Audrey Olive Mavis Hill (1920-2004).

3. Lola Rosamund Gibbes (born Inverell, NSW, 1911; died Campbelltown, NSW, 1973), married, North Sydney, NSW, 1942, John Rex Giles (1916-2002).

4. Alice Geraldine Gibbes (born Inverell, NSW, 1913; died North Sydney, NSW, 1989), married North Sydney, NSW, 1947, Cyril Sydney Cockerill (1915-2005).

5. John Jamison Gibbes (born Inverell, NSW, 1916; died Camperdown Children's Hospital, NSW, 1925).

6. Mary Gibbes (born Newcastle, NSW, 1929), married North Sydney, NSW, 1953, Walter Joseph Harrison (1928-2000).

I trust that all this information is of value and look forward to its incorporation in the relevant family trees.

Best regards, Stephen Gibbes

Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for the information, the website will be updated as soon as possible.

Subject: Re: Newsletter Distribution List and Kameruka Estate, Candelo, NSW

Dear David,

Could you please include me on your newsletter distribution list as soon as you are able.  I notice  from the Monaro Pioneers  website a recent addition in the name of Samuel Josiah Williams. He is a direct relative  being related to my grandmother( Ida M Williams) who was born on Kameruka Estate, Candelo and Married Ernest F Blake  ( See Page 2 of 6)  May I ask who submitted the information so that I can contact them to compare notes as I  have different information. There is also the connection between the Moffats( it) of the area  and there intermarriage with the Williams family.  I believe that there is also a Clan Moffat website which would be most interested in the Moffatt/ Moffitt information as it appears that there is little  information about this branch of the family. Re Kameruka Estate:  From what I know  this was run by Frank  Foster up until recent times. The Estate was sold. to an Englishman.  What I was wondering was what has become of the historical records, photographs, and especially a very old  Bible which was once  housed in the Kameruka Church but appears to have vanished.

Thank you in advance for including me on the newsletter distribution list.

Kind regards, Dennis Blake, Grandson of Ida M  Blake( nee Williams)

Hi Dennis,

I am the one responsible for the information displayed on our site for the family of Samuel Josiah Williams.  I am also responsible for compiling the information we have so far on the Moffit (att) family. I came across this Williams' family whilst compiling our list of ANZACs and have tried to fill in the blanks as best I could.  The Moffit's are still earmarked for further research when I can get around to it. I would be most grateful if you could add further information or correct any errors you detect.

As to your questions, I don't have any answers I'm afraid, however you could try the Bega Historical and Genealogy Society or the Pambula equivalent. They may just be able to shed some light on your quest.

Regards, Ian

Hi,

Just correcting you on something in this information. My father is Francis George Bales and he was born in 1931 not 1930 as stated. He also died in September 2005 leaving behind his six children and 15 grandchildren. He joined his wife Carmel who passed away on December 1, 1997 and grandson Matthew John Seckold who passed away on December 27 1991. Very sadly missed by many who loved him.

Dear Ian

I stumbled across the Monaro Pioneers by accident and saw the names Faber and Howell.  My grandmother was the daughter of Theodore Harmann Faber and Florence Anna Louisa Rochfort.  I would be interested to hear of anyone who is currently researching the Howell/Faber family. I will be away for a week or so, actually meeting up with some of the Faber family.

Hi Judith,

Any specific contributors to those families would be listed as contacts on their respective web pages if we had any. Any queries or additions/corrections can be sent to me as I manage our database and website.

Hi Ian,

Just a correction to the data on Albert Edward Hutchison b. 24 March 1929, son of Lionel Hutchison and Agnes Vera Tribe.

Firstly there is no ‘W’ initial in his name.  Secondly his marriage was to Nancy Lee   NSWBDM 15997/1953 not Heather Joyce Goodwin.    Albert and Nancy are my husband’s parents.  Nancy is the daughter of John Lee and Eleanor Bates and was born on August 21, 1931.  They did marry on 5 September 1953 at Parramatta. Thanks for your site as I have been able to trace many relatives from it.

Hi Yvonne,

Thanks for letting us know of these discrepancies.  They will be rectified shortly.

Subject: Family Tree of Tracey (Woodward)

Hello Ian,

My name is John Joseph Woodward.  I am a fifth generation descendant of Thomas and Bridget Tracey whose family history I have just noted on your site, to my very great delight.  My father, Alfred Maxwell Woodward  died on 18th March, 1967, at Hillsborough (and not at Hamilton as indicated on your site).  Perhaps the reason for the record showing that he died at Hamilton is because that is where the office of births, deaths and marriages is located.  My father had five siblings of whom only three (Mary Irene Woodward, Allan Francis Woodward and John Joseph Woodward) are mentioned in the genealogy.  He also had a sister named Margaret Woodward and another sister named Helena Woodward (whose other names and details are unknown to me).  I was named after my uncle, John Joseph Woodward who died tragically at Parramatta in 1942, when he was hit by a train as he was returning from the war in Europe. As the site correctly notes, my father married Mary Mullins at Scone in 1951.  My mother died at New Lambton on 13th December, 1997, aged 68.  I hope this assists you with the genealogical records which you maintain.  If there is anything further with which you think I may be able to assist you, please feel free to contact me either by email or at the office of Turnbull Hill Lawyers (Tel: 02 49048000 or on 0403054411 or on 49421114) where I am a partner.

Yours faithfully, John Woodward

Hi John,

Thanks for the information, we are pleased you have found our humble site to be of benefit. Any further information would be gratefully received.

Good afternoon Karen, Terry & Ian,

I attach birth & death transcriptions which I have just received;  all are for children of Mary McTavish and Peter Phillips, making 8 (eight) in all as against 7 (seven) noted on Mary's death certificate.  I'm guessing this is because Thomas was dead before Mary.  Do you agree?

It would appear that indeed Mary was born in Scotland, or North Britain as one of the transcriptions states - she was also Mactavish & McTarvish & McLavish, which we all understand.  To date I haven't found Mary coming in to the country, but that search will haveto wait a while longer.

I hope this helps with your research & adds just a little to the incredible amount of work which has already been done & which has been shared so generously. Henry & his wife Mary are still on holidays, recuperating from illness, so I'm sure he'll be best pleased with our work to date on his behalf.

My best regards, Pam Birchall (Graham)

Subject: Keevers / Inskip: Help & Correction?

Hi Ian, David and all

Once more MP has come to my aid – almost! I noted the descendants of William Inskip, an ancestor of the ex’s, and thought I would have a look – but no link. The family history (done years ago by unknown and too me via the ex MIL) has a Charlotte Keevers (1860, Kiama) dgtr of George Keevers & Mary Ann Inskip, but she is not on the MP. Nor can I find any record on BDM. While I have other strategies in progress, I am wondering if anyone can help shed some light.

I also noted the entry below:

Mary Jane Keevers was born in 1869 in Kiama, NSW79 and died in 1955 in Redfern, NSW80 at age 86.

My research suggests this death information is incorrect and that the following is the correct information.

BDM: 4382/1933  ATCHISON  MARY J  GEORGE  MARY A  KIAMA

& from Cemindex:

Cemetery: Kiama General

Family Name: Atchison

Given Names: Mary Jane

Birth Date:

Death Date: 14 Mar 1933

Age: 63y

Remarks: w/James; mother

Portion: Utg

Mary Jane is buried with James.

Thanks again for all the great work. It seems all roads lead to the Monaro (eventually).

Regards, Peter Dabelstein.

Hi Peter,

Sorry, we have knowledge of a Charlotte born 1860, but I have added her to the Keevers family while we await your investigations.

Thanks also for the corrective information, I will update the database and website as soon as I can get some spare time.

Subject: Correction of 2 items of information on the Monaro Pioneers site

Hello,

I am wanting to ask you to correct 2 pieces of information on the Monaro Pioneers site. First to need attention is about my Grandfather, AUBREY ERIC HOAD (Son of JOHN HENRY WILLIAM HOAD and ELIZA CLIFTON)

The information that  AUBREY ERIC HOAD (B 1989 TUMUT) married Miriam Doreen M Clifton (daughter of John Clifton and Flora Sophia Nichols)in Dubbo in 1925 is Correct

What is NOT correct is that he never  remarried again (as stated in the transcripts) to Honorah H Vial In Hamilton NSW. The person who married Honorah H Vial was AUBREY EDGAR HOAD from Armidale.

That information can be substantiated with a copy of an original Marriage Cerificate I obtained from BDM . Marriage Certificate Registration # 1935/004902

The second piece of information I have found to be incorrect is in regards to my Maternal Grandmother GRACE VERA MILLER , daughter of JOHN GEORGE CULLEN AND ANN AMELIA GATES.

It is stated that she remarried JOSEPH MORGAN  in 1939. That date is incorrect as they were actually married in 1949 as per Marriage Certificate registration #16925/1949.

I am hoping these two pieces of information can be rectified.

Kind regards, Michelle Ambrosini (nee Hoad)

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for letting me know of those discrepancies, our website will be updated as soon as possible.

Ian

Subject: Corrections to my account of the origins of Henry Bellchambers

Dear Ian,

After I originally submitted my research on the origins of Henry Bellchambers of Bombala, I received a series of  Emails from June Evans,

who introduced herself as a Bellchamber descendant, from Essex, England.  She assured me that Henry's parents were James Belchamber and

Mary Hubbard from West Hoathly, Sussex. I was strongly berated for sloppy research and  in the face of her reproof, I subsequently altered

my account.  Now, Bret Bellchambers, a direct descendant of Henry Bellchambers, as am I, recalls oral family history that coincides with

my original contribution.  Bret says that his late aunt  had a chart which she showed to him.  It confirmed that Henry Bellchambers' parents

were indeed Thomas Bellchambers and Sarah Best.  This coincides with the inscriptions on tombstones I found in the graveyard of St. Mary's

church, Westerham some years ago. The Best family graves at Westerham are numerous.  The Bests and  the Bellchambers are old Westerham families. I believe that Item 5 on the website concerning Henry Bellchambers should be altered as follows:

"5.  Henry's parents are buried in the churchyard of St. Mary-the-Virgin with many of their forebears.  (Thitrteen forebears are in unmarked

graves). Henry's father is Robert bellchambers.  Robert was married twice.  1)  Sarah Clifton and 2) Ann Geal.    Henry and Ann had three

sons, Henry, baptised 30/1/1831, Alfred, baptised 27/1/1833 and Amos, baptised 12/6/1836.  Henry and Amos immigrated to Australia.  Alfred

remained in England and married Mary Fox in 1857.  Robert Bellchambers died  4/9/1841 at Edenbridge, Kent, leaving Ann a widow.  She married Robert Parker, a bachelor, in 1851.  Ann, Robert's mother, died on 24/10/1873, aged 69 years."

With thanks for your generous volunteer work on the website, Elizabeth Gray Hirschl

Hi Elizabeth,

I have corrected our website as you suggested, thank you for your support.

Ian.

My name is Trish Moon and my husband Peter Moon [Doris Alma Montgomery, Florence May Whittaker/Laing, Donald Laing, Sarah Higgins, Robert Higgins] is the GGGG Grandson of Robert and Ellen.

I am so grateful for this website as Peter comes from so many families from the Monaro and it is great to have it all together and being able to check on my research is a fantastic resource.

The Robert and Ellen research list their daughter, Sarah as being born 1855 - V18551255.  I do not think that this is right as that birth lists a Sarah Ann born to John and Elizabeth.  I have never been able to find a birth/baptism for Sarah and her marriage certificate does not list her parents.  However I have found a website jamesobrien.id.au it has all of the family history of Robert and and Ellen Higgins and like me cannot find a birth for Sarah but has other documents that state the children, and Sarah is one of them.  The site also has family history documents about the James Laing Family as Donald Laing married Sarah Higgins.

As the Higgins Family has no contributors I have emailed you as the site suggests and would be willing to contribute my research if it would help sort out the right info.

Les was brought up on Hazeldean Station by his mother and grandparents (George & Emily Brown). He was told that his father was dead.
It was not until shortly before her death in 2007 that Elsie relented and told Les that not only had his father been alive up until1990 but he had a second family and Les had a number of half brothers & sisters. She also advised that she always refused Milton a divorce.
You have a Hazel Rose Roberson listed in your tree and have her as a wife of Milton. You also list a number of "living" children.
What I hoping for, Pattrick, is some help from you as to how we find out who these children were, are any of them still in Cooma, do they know of Les etc?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Subject: Re Monaro Pioneers ' Decendants of Anthony Rolfe'

Dear Ian,

The name Ethel Rose Rolfe is recorded among the second generation of the Decendants of Anthony Rolfe as a daughter of George Rolfe and  George's second wife Margaret Lee.   This entry is incorrect.  Ethel Rose Rolfe , nee Ethel Rose Wellford ,is, however, correctly recorded as the wife of Arthur Lawrence Rolfe , the youngest son of George Rolfe and Margaret Lee. Her birth date is incorrectly entered as 1889. It should be 1888 according to a birth certificate in my possession.

I tender this advice as the eldest son of Arthur Lawrence Rolfe and Ethel Rose Wellford. You might consider making the necessary amendments.

May I take the opportunity to congratulate you and all concerned on the creation and maintainance of this site which we only recently discovered. Many thanks and best wishes.

Yours sincerely, Arthur George Wellford Rolfe

Hi Arthur,

Thank you for bringing those discrepancies to my attention, our site will be rectified as soon as possible.

Hi David

We are attempting to hold a Reunion in August 2010, details attached. Would you be able to add part of this information to your newsletter.

We are quiet happy to provide a donation if you give us details of where to send it. We have contributed information to Ian Harvey on our side of the Love family.

Thanks for your assistance.

Please open attached document EXPOFINTEREST.DOC for full details of this exciting event.

Please direct all enquiries/responses to Lyle & Margaret Cooper.

Hi Ian

I have been in touch with David asking if he can add the attached information (in part) to the Newsletter.

As you will see I am trying to put together a document/book on the Love Family and their descendants.

How do I seek permission to use some of the information on the Monaro Pioneers site?

Of course acknowledgment would also be included at the beginning of the document/book.

I would also like to use some of Jim Grant’s Reflections which you seem to oversee.

I have emailed all persons on Ancestry who have John Love on their family tree to seek permission to use their information.

This will not be a money making concern, just the cost of printing the book/document.

I have already spent a couple of years getting the information together, and hope it happens sometime.

If you have any comments would love to hear from you.

Cheers

Lyle & Margaret Cooper

Hi Folks,

You have our permission to use any material on the Monaro Pioneers website with a suitable acknowledgement.

As for the material "Jim Grant's Reflections" you will need the permission of the author Shirley Hesse whose email address is attached.

Your idea is a splendid one but alas I fear may not garner much support as more and more sites like ours display information for free.  We would be happy to assist if we can.

Unfortunately there appears not to be any contact details for the researcher available.  Could you either pass on there details if allowed or past on my details to them. Yours assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Joy,

If no contact details are listed on a family tree it is because we have not received any specific information regarding that family from any

contributors.  Much of the information we receive is often contained in files sent to us for other families.  I am the researcher for our site and I add information during my investigations as well. If you care to contribute further information to this family, I can add your contact details to that page to encourage others to contact you.

Dear Ian,

First of all, what a wonderful presentation has been done of the Monaro pioneers.

I am the eldest daughter of Carlyle Norman Murray and Mary Blanche Murray (nee Grant) I am the grand daughter of Daniel Joseph (No. 23) and Mary Blanche Grant.

Sandra Florance of the Pambula Historical Society sent me the death notices of my grandfather and my uncle Albert (Trick) that were in the

ACT Monumental Transcription Book.

Albert (Trick) Grant (my mum's brother) died 11.6.1971 aged 67 and his father (my grandfather) Daniel Grant died 19.3.1967 aged 95.

This makes his birth year 1872.

My sister and I were in Canberra and visited our grandfather in 1965 and stayed with Trick and his wife Maisie. I have never heard till recently that he was called Melon Dan and he was definitely alive in 1965 when we saw him. I hope this information may be of some assistance for your records.

Best wishes, Margaret Bull (nee Murray)

Thank you Margaret, your information is very helpful.

Subject: Re Twofold Bay and the arrival of the Bermondsey in 1848

Hello Ian,

A couple of years ago when I first started researching my family history, I contacted your website in the hopes of finding out about my ancestors, David Matthews and Elizabeth Neasmith, who were married at Dundundra near Maneroo, now Monaro, in 1850.  They had two daughters in the next couple of years, but I cannot find their births registered anywhere and Patrick Mould couldn't help me at all.

I have since discovered that my ggggrandmother Elizabeth Neasmith, her mother Margaret, and siblings, Margaret, William and Agnes, arrived at Twofold Bay on the Bermondsey in 1848.  I have also discovered that Dundundra was a squatters run in the area, possibly owned by Ben Boyd, and Elizabeth's sister Margaret Neasmith married a John Hendry, in 1849 at Burnima, and had two sons.   Burnima was possibly another pastoral run owned by Ben Boyd, and my ancestors who arrived on the Bermondsey must have gone on to work on these pastoral runs upon arrival, as this ship was part of Ben Boyd's Great Experiment.

Unfortunately for me, after just a few years, the Neasmiths and their partners left the district and moved on to greener pastures.  This is why they could not be found on your website.

My question is why is there nowhere on your site, the story of Ben Boyd and the Bermondsey?  This would have made my task so much easier, as I had found the Neasmiths arriving in NSW on the ship, but no mention of the ship arriving at Twofold Bay.  I had assumed it was Sydney.  I have only found out in an accidental way the story of their arrival.

Ben Boyd and the Bermondsey played an important role in a lot of your early settlers and the story should be told on your website.

Perhaps you can tell me if the births of these early children were ever registered properly or were they just baptised by a visiting minister?

I hope you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism.  I received you newsletter for some time, but it was of no use to me as my ancestors had all moved on after just a few years in the area.

Diane Jakubans, Bendigo, Victoria.

Hi Diane,

I am glad you have found our site to be some use, if only limited.  I am not sure if you fully understand the nature of our project.  We display the information contributed by others, particularly such things as you point out like Ben Boyd etc.  Why don't we have anything detailed yet, well no one has contributed the information, simple as that.  Perhaps you might like to rectify that situation for us?

As to your questions on the birth of your ancestors, alas we have no information unfortunately that will assist you.

Hi Gail,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes Robert Henry McPaul was indeed the son of George McPaul and Mary Hanscombe.  Our site incorrectly showed Robert Henry dying in 1904 whereas in fact he died in 1978 near Kyogle.  Our site will be rectified as soon as I am able to do so.

There have been e-mail discussions between my partner and a member of the Ryan Family as to whether Claude Phillips is the biological father of Jennifer and Terrence.  It would appear from the research done by the Ryan Family that he is not.  However, Claude is noted on Jennifer’s birth certificate as the father.  I do not know who is noted on Terrence’s birth certificate as the father. Subject: MARY JANE STIMPSON - ELTON-PARKES-SMITH

Dear Pattrick

I’ve new to computers and tracing the family tree, but have come across your fantastic MonaroPioneer site:  My husband Peter’s ancestors came from the Bombala district and I have a query re Mary Jane Stimpson, Born: 8.2.1.1818 , Eng – Decd: 28.5.1875 – Buried as “Aston”.  Her lst Husband was Charles Campbell Elton, the 2nd was to ISAAC  PARKES (my husband’s G.G.G.Grandfather) and her 3rd marriage was to JOHN WILLIAM SMITH? I think your records say William Smith – I have a copy of their marr. Cert: No in Register 1863/109 Bombala.  It lists his name as John William Smith (carpenter) and a witness was Charles Elton (I think he was her son)

Sometimes records are wrong, so would you mind confirming if you know which is correct?    I understand that they had a daughter  Sarah (1866 – 1924)?

Answer.  If you have a copy of the certificate then I would accept that information as the most accurate.  Do you have any further details on Sarah?  Who did she marry?

A  little more information should you be interested:  Mary Jane Stimpson & Isaac Parkes had a dau: Susan who married William Hobbs in 1874 (in your records)  They in turn had a dau: NORA B:1881 who married David McIndoe; David Mcindoe was born abt. June? 1865? Bendigo Vic. (Can`t  find if the birth was ever recorded?)  -  Nora & David married 12.10.1898  Delegate, Presbytherian Church. David was a wheelwright/blacksmith – aged 34 yrs and Nora was 18 yrs. David`s parents were – George McIndoe (Grocer) and Mary Wood Patterson  -  Don`t  have any other information on them...Have you ever come across these names?

Answer:  We have not received any information regarding these people until now.

David died 21.5.1924 (59 yrs 10 mths 9 days) at Yeppoon (near Rockhampton, Qld)  -     Nora died 28.6.1968 and buried in Yeppoon with David:

Their children were:  George William, 1900 / 1959  -  Jessie Constance 1901 / 1978  -    David Donald 1904 / 1951  -  Rita 1905 / 1908?  -  Alpha Wood Patterson 1908 / 1952 – Gertrude Ethel 1911 / 1911.

Thanking for your wonderful site and also for any assistance  you may be able to give me.  We travelled through Bombala twice but were unable to get accommodation so had to continue our journey.  Were disappointed as we were looking forward to spending some time in the area...

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am in the middle of a history project, which is an essay about someone who died at Gallipoli. The person I was assigned to was Private Reginald Henry Bede Rankin. He was born in Tumut.  Based on research, he was the son of Helena Rankin, and Donald Charles Rankin, and was the headmaster of Jerilderie Public School before he left for the war.

I was wondering if you are a relative of his, and if so, have any information on him. From research, when he died he had a diary with him. Your help is much appreciated.

Tejas Iyer, Sydney Boys High School

Dear Tejas,

My only connection with the Rankin family, is that from time to time I transcribe information from a wonderful old book that I have, and send the information through to the very hardworking Historian, Ian Harvey at the MonaroPioneers.com.au

On the Monaro website, there are at least three Rankin strains of the family and their descendants and I am sure that

Mr. Ian Harvey would be kind enough to direct you to whatever info is available  Good luck with your history project.

I think you will find that many of the Rankin family, and the hard work of the Historian, will have made it very easy to research the family of:

 Private Reginald Henry Bede Rankin

All my best

Barbara Adams

Hi Tejas,

We have no information on this individual in our database.  This Rankin family has not been submitted to our project for inclusion as yet.

Also I have noticed the family of Alan and Alice Rankin (nee Oslington) has been removed from Donald Rankin and is now under John Rankin, I feel the photos in the (Ron Rankin collection) should also be placed under John Rankin as they are revelant to the family of Alan and Alice Rankin. Sincerely. Ron Rankin.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for new image.  The changes you requested have been made. Thanks also for your ongoing support.

Subject: Mead /Moon Families

Hello Ian,

I am writing as an excited researcher who has been dabbling in family history for a few years. Recently I decided to get a lot more serious{turning 60 did it} and was checking some details on the Blacka Family when I came across your site and there was my family history in a bundle . I am a direct descendant of both Samuel Mead and Frederick Robert Moon,  the daughter of Samuel Gordon Mead and Shirley Marie Moon which makes me I believe 5th generation of these two pioneering convicts.  I made an all to brief

visit to Bendoc around 15 years ago and could find very little , but took some photo’s of the Mead graves at that time.  I would like to keep in touch with your society and would offer any facts I find on my journey as I am now researching the earlier ancestry of both families.

Thank you for listening, Chris Reed

Hi Chris,

We would be most grateful for any additional information you can share with us.

Regards, Ian

Hi Denise,

Sorry, we don't have that information.  A copy of their wedding certificate should provide you with all the information you need.  Another alternative might be the electoral roles.  There is an entry for both people in the Ryerson Index so there will some indication in the Lismore Northern Star records where they were buried.

Subject: Elizabeth Turner

Hi Ian

I have been tracing my family tree for many years now and have found a lot of great information including some from the Monaro Pioneers website. My Great Grandparents were Harold Ernest Charles Turner and Ethel Lorna Rayner (daughter of George Sydney Rayner & Ethel Bertha Robinson). They had a daughter Elizabeth in 1923 born in Berry and she died a few days after birth. I cannot find any information on her and cannot find any birth or death certificates. Do you have any details about her?

I have also found that they had another daughter called Joyce Turner who was born on 5th November 1922 at Berry and died on 8th November 1922 after only living for 3 days. I have managed to find the following information on her burial:

1922– November 8– TURNER– St. Luke Burial Register– Joyce Turner of Berry died 8-11-1922, buried 9-11-1922 (SFHS– Berry C/E) age 3 days, Rev. L. R. O’Connell.

(Possibly buried CEN A19)

My Grandmother, Norma Rayner Turner and her sisters Lorna (Rae) and Barbara never knew about Joyce and Elizabeth until I discovered them recently. Any information that you have on Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards, Karren

Hi Karen,

Unfortunately we have no other information that might assist you.

Subject: JARVIS/STEPHENSON

Hi Ian,

Is it possible for you to tell me how I may contact one, Kevin Browning. He has submitted a few articles to the site, along with an e-mail address, which I am told is no longer current. If thats not possible perhaps you could tell me if the Joseph Stephenson. Kevin mentions in his page about ''John Jarvis and Joseph Stephenson'' is the same Joseph Stephenson that married Emma Dalton in 1881 at Goulburn. It appears that we have two John Jarvis's. I would like to make sure I have the right Joseph Stephenson.

 Many Thanks   Johanna

Hi Johanna,

Unfortunately the only email contact we have for Kevin Browning is that displayed on our site.  If he has changed his address we have not been notified thereof.

As to your question, I guess there is a possibility the Joseph Stephenson who married Emma Dalton is the same Joseph Stephenson who was tried for the Manslaughter of John Jarvis but I doubt it.  The newspaper article does state that Joseph Stephenson was a returned serviceman and this fact would almost certainly rule out the Joseph who married Emma Dalton in 1881.  Checking the WW1 records also shows there was no Joseph Stephenson who served with 1st AIF who was married and would have been born about 1860.  Now he could have been a British soldier as the article does suggest he was British by birth but again, hardly likely to be someone who was married in 1881.

David although I have changed my newsletter email, it is still at my old one, on my family page. Would you please alert all those needing to know is that Vista does not permit one to click on a name to raise an email, therefore no communication is possible unless using the "reply" function.

Thank you Doreen Pennell nee Plunkett

The change has been made.  The email address we display has been slightly altered to thwart "trawling" software.  The @ sign has been changed to -at-.

I am trying to trace the history from here back to England or where ever.  It’s my husbands family and his mum never asked any questions about the grandparents etc. Hard to believe.  But i rang his aunty in Sydney and she gave me some more information.  She is sending it via post to me but i got some info over the phone –

This is as i think it goes......... William J Wakeling at some stage married Cate Masterson ( no more details about these 2 yet)

They had a son called Arthur A. Wakeling – Born in 1866  in Paddington NSW- who married Caroline Jackson in 1887 in Manly Australia.

Arthur and Caroline had a daughter called Iris who got pregnant to a USA Sailor and had a boy called Danny.  I think the sailor went back to USA and she stayed here and remarried but new husband didn’t want the boy so he was looked after by the Grandmother – apparently, they also had a son maybe more one is called Herbert Laurence Wakeling Born 30.04.1919  married Mary McDonald – Foster name was Nicolas.

Where W J Wakeling was born i don’t know if it was here in Australia or back in England somewhere. Is any of this in your area with your lot of the Wakelings?

Regards jane

Hi Jane,

Unfortunately, none of the individuals you refer too are known to us.

Subject: Blewitt Family Tree

Hi Ian

I am in the process of producing a Blewitt Book and a copy of my database was given to Bruce Elliott by mistake from his Cousin and it has a copyright on the database and you have published it up on the website which I am not very happy about as it has cost me thousands of dollars and 20 years research and phoning the descendants to get the information so I would like the information removed from the website as it doesn’t belong to Bruce Elliott to be giving it to you. If it is not removed I will be seeking legal action on this matter.

Regards Daphne Hamilton

Hi Daphne,

Thank you for the email, I am sorry you have an issue with information displayed on our site.  I would like explain a few things before I specifically address your concerns.

We accept all information as contributions in good faith and we have no control over the original source or validity thereof.

The file we display for William Blewitt was created on October 27, 2008 by myself from information we already had in our database.  That information was obtained from numerous contributors for other connected families plus additional research by myself.

Subsequent, to this file being published, 2 contributions of small amounts of additional information were received and added to our database and website, the first being from Carmel Wood on January 20th, 2009 and then from Bruce Elliott February 25th, 2009.

I still have all the emails from Bruce Elliott and he did not provide us with a complete database of this family, he merely provided a few updates to information we already had.  Again I state, the majority of what you see on our site was put together from material other than from what you claim is your own copywrite and provided well before Bruce Elliott ever made contact with our project.  Any similarity with your own material is just an unfortunate coincidence in this case.

In fact, much of the information we display has come from online sites freely available to any internet user.  For instance, all the details of deaths where buried in the Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery have been obtained from the online transcription of that cemetery.  This site also provides DOB and place in many instances.

All the NSW BDM Index source references have been provided by myself by checking that index for each birth, death and marriage - again a freely available source to anyone.  The military service of anyone who enlisted for WW1 is also freely available on the National Archives Website and the Australian War Memorial site. Some family details for William Blewitt and Anne Hardcastle are also freely available on the Familysearch website.

Therefore, quite clearly Bruce Elliott did not provide the majority of the information we display and we can prove it.  Secondly, other people have contributed information to that family tree so "ownership" by a single individual is certainly not the case.  Thirdly, we are not in a position to confirm or deny what you say is true.

Where can we go from here, well we are quite happy to remove any specific details provided by Bruce Elliott if he instructs us to do so as we do appreciate your concern and that would confirm your assertion.  Unfortunately, because Bruce was not the original contributor and many others have provided information from interconnected families, including myself, your claim to ownership of the entire information we display for William Blewitt is without foundation.

We will not be removing the file as shown as others have contributed to the information we display, but we are willing to display an amended file if I do receive the amendment instructions from Bruce.  I suggest you communicate with Bruce to arrange.

On a more positive note, I am sure your book will be a much more information rich source than the tree skeleton we show.  All the family stories and finite detail would always make your book a much better source of information about that specific family.  We could assist your endeavours by having a reference to your book and where it could be obtained listed on the Blewitt page on our site to encourage any visitors to that page to obtain a copy.  You would need to provide us with the detail text for such a promotion.

We are happy to cooperate if we can.

Regards, Ian Harvey

Dear Ian

Thank-you for the good work you continue to do. Could you please tell me the source for the information that you have on George Keeling and Edward McIntyre? (August Newsletter) I may have some additional information.

Kind regards, Dianne

Hi Dianne,

There is no specific contributor of the information on those families, the reports were compiled from the  information in our database plus additional research by myself. I would be very grateful to receive any further information you may wish to contribute.

Regards, Ian

Thanks Ian.

Just curious as to where the information about the ‘Java’ came from … and whether there is anyone apart from me researching the Keelings.

Will send some additional information ASAP.

Kind regards, Dianne

HI Dianne,

The immigration information I found on the State Records Immigration Index. Your request will appear in our next newsletter and that may bring forth someone else interested in these families.

Regards, Ian

Thanks Ian.

Can we hold off the newsletter request until I forward the additional information to you, please?

Kind regards, Dianne

No problem.

Dear David
Welcome to the new job! Firstly, I received two email copies, so see where the duplication is, please, as we don't need to waste electrons!!
Secondly, I sent this message to Ian after his computer problems a couple of weeks ago, so perhaps you can assist, as it obviously missed this latest issue.  He had lost her email address, so was going to put a notice in the August issue in the hope that she would see it somehow:

I'm on the mailing list for the Monaro Pioneers' Newsletter because of my link to the Booshang/Booshand family.  William Henry Booshang (1897-1961) married Gertrude May Fairhall (1898 - 1982) in 1934.

Following on this month's issue, I would like to contact Sharlene Molloy to get some dates and places for Norman Thomas Booshang's story, as I have some gaps she may be able to help me with.

My web site records names, but there are no dates/places for living persons, however I would like to have this information for my family record.

I'm asking therefore if you could forward this message to Sharleen and we can speak directly if she is willing to share those details.
Thank you, Bruce Fairhall

Subject: Monaro Region - the towns it takes in as belonging to Monaro

Hello Ian
Not being a local to the Monaro Region, my ancestors are from the areas that I have listed below, would they be part of the Monaro region?
Adelong NSW Gundaroo NSW? Queanbeyan NSW? Sutton NSW Sutton Forest NSW Tumbarumba NSW? Tumut NSW Yass NSW?  I have a huge amount of information if this is the case (including three (4) convicts.
Jill Roder

Hi Jill,

All except Sutton Forest border the Monaro and we have many families in our database from those towns.  Have you checked our database to see if your families already exist in whole or in part in our records?

We would be have receive your information, preferably in Gedcom format if possible.

Regards, Ian
