Subject: Quinn and Ivill Families

From:    "Louise Lowe"

Date:    Thu, March 4, 2010 2:01 pm

Good afternoon

Firstly, could you please add me to your Newsletter Mailing List as I have recently started researching a branch of my son-in-law's tree that relate

back to the Monaro District and I have found your site to be of great interest.

Secondly, in your Pioneers Database there is mention of Edward IVILL and his descendants.  One of the children of Edward IVILL and Catherine BRADSHAW is listed as Charles William REED.  This Charles married Julia QUINN (daughter of John Laurence QUINN and Ann Cole MOSS).

Would you have any further information or documentation as to why Charles REED is listed as a child of the IVILL's.

I have attempted to contact the people listed has having submitted their research for this family but to no avail.

Thank you for your time and have a great day,  Louise Lowe

Hi Louise,

Perhaps one of our newsletter readers will be able to provide you with more information.  But I would suggest that Charles William Ivill was raised by a family called Reed after his parents were drowned and took the surname Reed instead of Ivill,  Certainly all his descendants are called Reed.

Do you have proof that Julia Quinn is the daughter of John Laurence Quinn and Ann Moss?  Julia's burial records show she was 76yo at the time of her death in 1903 which puts her dob at 1827. According to the information we have John Lawrence Quinn married Ann Matilda Cole Moss in 1848 in NZ and had 16 children not including a Julia.

Regards, Ian

Subject: Keon

Dear Ian,

Blackrock College is currently celebrating our sesquicentenary, having been founded in 1860. We are trying to find relatives, descendants or family generally of our very first students here. It would be wonderful for them to be represented at Foundation Day here next September.

Ferdinand Keon and his brother O'Brien Keon, orphans, were both among our first students, coming here in the autumn of 1860. We have very little information about them except a note on his record saying that Ferdinand died, place unspecified, aged 37 so, knowing he was 12 in 1860, this might have been around 1908. We know their grandfather, name unspecified, was in Co Meath.

O'Brien Keon was living in Dublin in 1901 and we have his address at that time.

There seems to be a branch of this Keon family in Australia and the name Ferdinand Keon is relatively unusual. Perhaps your Keon contributor would contact us and maybe we will be able to work out the relationship with our two past students.

Yours sincerely,

Caroline Mullan

Hello Caroline,

There is no specific contact for the Keon family, I am the person who added that material to our records as the family were related to the Toms family.  I have attached a report of what we know already for your use.

I believe that Margaret Keon nee Plunkett probably came to Australia to join her brother John Hubert Plunkett, who was appointed Solicitor General of the Colony of New South Wales.  I also believe that Margaret was the wife of Ferdinand Keon who was already dead at the time (but I have no proof of this).

Therefore my best guess is the two boys to whom you refer were probably the sons of Ferdinand and Margaret left behind in Ireland for their education but again this is purely speculation on my part.

I hope this helps you and of course if you discover any further information that might assist us, we would be very grateful to receive same.

Regards,

Ian Harvey

Subject: FW: Edward Carroll ancestry/James Carroll line

Hello Ian,
I had forwarded this to Carole, but it bounced.
Will try you, this time round.
Regards, Irene Mason (nee Carroll -  Maria Williams/William Gait line - their daughter Mary Gait married James Carroll, my grandparents).

Hi Irene,

Alas, all to often folks change their email addresses and do not let us know.  In the case of Edward Carroll, I was the original contributor although I have no direct connection with that family.

All the information we currently have is already shown on our site.  Whilst I don't have any images of Edward Carroll's grave, I do have a photo of Hannah's (Johanna) and it it is self explanatory (see the Edward Carroll page on the MP website).   The dob will always remain questionable I believe.  One thing is certain, they were very fast and loose with the truth in those days.

As to your other questions, I don't have an answer unfortunately. I have added some of your information to our database.

This email will appear in our next newsletter and that may generate some responses for you.

Regards, Ian

Hello Ian,
Thank you for your quick reply.   I'm amazed that you research a family so thoroughly, esp. one with which you have no connection.

The Monaro information fired me to investigate Edward and Johanna further.   Accessed the Old Bailey files for Joanna's trial and traced her via her ship, and accessed her personal details via those shipping records.  I am going to see if I can find out some more about her.  Also, discovered by working from the Ship's manifest that Edward came from Ireland. National Archives of Ireland gave  a record of his trial and further investigation of shipping records showed not only his personal details, but also that a brother, John Carroll, came out on the Earl Grey.   Had never heard of his brother, John, so there's another avenue for me to pursue.   Edward stole potatoes (no previous offences), and John stole shoes (1 previous offence of 3 months ).

Would you want any of these details once I have reference as far as I can go?   Do you know of any other family member who might have current information on either Edward, Joanna, John?

Yes, I appreciate that a survival instinct also needed a big of devious behaviour and stretching of the truth!!!   God bless them, I'm sure I would have done the same ---- must be in the blood.

Is it possible to be included on to that mailing list, please?
Regards, Irene.

Hi Irene,

Yes I would greatly appreciate any further detail you could provide regarding Edward Carroll and Johanna and his brother John,  we do have a number of Carroll loose ends in our database including at least one John.

If you would like to compile a "Story" for both Edward and Johanna I will be very happy to add them to our records with your name as contributor. Any family members who have expressed interest and contributed would be listed on the site.  Plus may be a newsletter reader. David will be delighted to add you to our newsletter distribution list.

Regards, Ian

Subject: Edward Carroll ancestry/James Carroll line
Date: Wed, 24 Feb 2010 03:55:42 +0000
Hello Carole,
I have recently discovered your Monaro District web publication regarding the Descendants of Edward Carroll.  Congratulations on the work involved in the compilation of the family through the Edward Carroll/Joanna Welch line as the material is quite extensive.  Both of the sisters of James Carroll certainly helped to populate Australia -- one with 16 children, and the other with 13.   Makes James's 3 or 4 (1 deceased) rather small.

I was formerly Irene Carroll - my father John Henry Emmet Carroll was one of the 8 children of James Carroll and Mary Gait.

I noticed that 6 of the 8 children of James and Mary have been recorded and that in itself is  an accomplishment.   Should you wish to note it publicly or privately note it, I will supply the names of the  children  as listed on the Birth Certificate of the
youngest--
8.  Elizabeth Irene Renalda (my namesake)  both on 4 April, 1900--
1.  Violet Mary was the eldest,  16
2.  Thomas Edward William (Ted or Will), 14
3.  James Frederick Gordon (Fred),  12
4.  John Henry Emmet ( Harry or Jack)  9   (my Dad)
5.  Herbert Alphonsus Nash (Phonse or Fonce)  7
6.  Lawrence Mervyn Gait (Mervyn)  4
7.  Alma Maria Catherine Victoria (Alma) 2 - shows as twins on Irene's Birth Certificate.
I'm inclined to think that this may simply be an error and Alma had 4 names. My father had never told me about any sibling who had died and 'Nil Deceased' appears on that same Certificate.

Please feel free to make what you wish of this information or simply do nothing at all.  As far as Carroll ancestry goes, also, the line seems to have faded in my generation -- girls seemed to predominate and I know of no Carroll male carrying on the name.

The main reason I'm emailing you is that
I'm really interested in the fact that both Edward Carroll and Joanna Welch  were recorded as convicts.  If the information came from the female side of the family, then it is probably correct.   All sorts of pains were taken, and tales concocted to hide convict ancestry and as Mary Gait came down a convict line we know of a romantic tale explaining that.

This information set me on the path of discovery via Old Bailey records, and it appears Joanna was 16 when she came to Australia - sentenced to 7 years for larceny.   Edward, tracing back from St Vincent records, was tried at Kings Co (now Offaly, Ireland) and sentenced to 7 years at 17 years of age for larceny.    He was transferred to the hulk Essex - no doubt to await transportation to Australia from Cork.

As Joanna came to Australia in January  1831 on board  Earl of Liverpool and was 16 at the time of her conviction in 1830 - her birth year must have been 1814.    Edward arrived at 17 in 1837, so would have been born about 1819.   This would make Joanna 5 years older than him and perhaps the reason for her 1809 supposed birth year.  Many women put their ages back and no doubt, she would have been a tiny little lady and able to pass as younger.
Joanna's 'crime' was 'theft, simple grand larceny, 8th July, 1830, indicted for stealing 1 coat, value 3s, 1 handkerchief, value 6p and gloves, value 6p"

There was a Hannah (also Ann) Welch tried in Dec 1829 - wife of a Thomas Welch (not John) - for passing counterfeit coins.  Her sentence was Death at age 34.   I have been trying to reconcile my head around the reason for Joanna to change her name to 'Johanna' 'Hannah' and 'Anna' on various certificates and wondered could the lady sentenced to death about the time of Joanna's conviction could be the 'unknown' mother?   All speculative, of course.   Was John Welch an engineer? or simply a story?

Our family story was Edward came freely as an assisted immigrant in about 1841-2 and Joanna told her grandchildren that 'she was sent to Australia for stealing food from the Governor's table'.     I think the Tower of London featured in there somewhere, but I cannot remember where.   She also said she came out as a children's nurse and the family died on the way out.   She may have been protected when she came out here, but unless female convicts had a protector, they were at the mercy of many a rogue and abuses were commonplace, unless they were particularly wily.   Shudder to think of life in those years.

Old Bailey records show a Hannah Welch (10 January 1828) charged with theft of 6 lbs bacon value 3s6p but found Not Guilty.   One  wonders if our Joanna was actually the same person calling herself Hannah in the first sentencing and after another theft - this time  under a different name - the judge could have decided that 2 attempts at larceny closely on the heels of the other was enough to send her off to the Antipodes.

The conviction offence (theft of coat, gloves, handkerchief), in case you are not aware of it, took place in a local tavern in the Devonshire Mews which she had entered in the company of 2 other women.  She was intercepted in Devonshire Street.   Have you consulted the Old Bailey files?  They are interesting reading and so sad - indictments on  society more than the poor victims (convicts).
www.oldbaileyonline.org
So many came out here and led exemplary lives.  Hence the quote 'there but for the grace of God go I'.

Do you have any information about John Carroll and Catherine Hayes?  Being a soldier in Spain leads me to believe an Irish contingent's involvement in the Napoleonic Peninsula War.   Would dearly love to know but don't know how to go about it.

My Carroll cousins said that James Carroll enjoyed 'step dancing'.   Are you aware of such a reference i.e. can you elaborate if the stepdancing was of Spanish origin or simply Irish jigging?  Possibly Irish jigging if Edward was Irish.

With all these questions, I'm assuming you are of the Carroll line and that you do not regard me as being too forward in writing to a 'cousin' x-times removed and bombarding you with befuddling questions. I await your reply.

Best regards, Irene Mason (nee Carroll b. 3.11.1946)

Subject: Incorrect information in January 2010 Newsletter

An error in your January 2010 newsletter. (relevant excerpt pasted below)

My father was Algie Henry Smith James. Born with surname of James, and died as James.  and also married as James.  I have a BDM photostat of original Marriage Certificate containing signatures to prove this!   NOT Jakobi, and certainly not with the fanciful story 'Judy' has attached to this error that was obviously made by BDM listings.

This information below from your January 2010 contains pure fabrication from the mind of the person researching. If the researcher had checked she would have found this is a scanning/transcribing error of the BDM records)

Error as follows:

14 Marriage Certificates scanned in 1924 listed surnames as Jakobi when in fact, if cross-checked, these people were all born as JAMES. They were all from various parts of NSW.

Note : Strangely there were no 'Jakobi' marriages recorded in ANY other year than 1924 by the BDM. Obviously BDM had a 'glitch' while digitizing their records at this point.

Could you please advise 'Judy' that I have original documents stating 'JAMES', and I request that you remove this person's false and unhelpful 'imaginings', as this is disturbing to our family.

Thanks. Alma James

Excerpt:

Here's a doozy....

B9/2.1. Algie Henry Smith James, (Henry4; Julia3; Benjamin2; James1) born in 1895 at Marrickville [NSW  14310/1895  14310/1895 ] died in 1974 [NSW 5819/1974] aged 79 years.

He married as Algie Jakobi in 1924 to Ivy Enid Christina Kachel.

Jakobi (German) for James. Kachel: German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name for a potter, from Middle High German kachel 'pot', 'earthenware vessel'.

After convincing myself this was simply a sp. error. another family member pops up with the same name for marriage.....I'm convinced it’s a religous tradition or somthing... best I can come up with.

 B9/5.1. Christian James, (Robert John4; Julia3; Benjamin2; James1) born in 1898 at Wollongong [NSW  17446/1898  17446/1898 ] died in 1970.

She married as Christina Jakobi in 1924 to Henry Ryall born in 1899 at Orange [NSW 5771/1899] died in 1946 at Wollongong [NSW  14220/1946 14220/1946 ] aged years, son of John Edmund Ryall and Emily Rebecca.

Cheers, Judy

Hi Alma,

Your comments will appear in the next newsletter. It would be nice if you could add more specific detail to enhance our project.

Subject: White Siblings

Dear Ian Harvey,

I have just come across an the list of descendants of Sidney Adolphus White  Compiled from the Monaro Pioneers Database

1. Sidney Adolphus White, son of William White and Ann, was born in 1841 in Hinton, Somersetshire, England, died on January 11, 1927 in Bombala, NSW1 at age 86, and was buried in Bombala Cemetery, NSW Grave 9.

Notes: Sidney is believed to have come to Australia on board a ship owned by Thomas Sutcliffe Mort who pioneered the cheese business at Bodalla. in 1857 aged 16, landing at Moruya NSW. Another story is that Sidney was sent out by his parents to find his brother Henry and Mary Ann White who had settled in QLD as his mother missed them and asked Sidney to bring them home but Sidney wrote back saying "England was never like this I am staying too". This one could just be a story.

My Great Grandmother Mary Ann White may be the sister Sydney was sent to find.

The following is what has been handed down to me by my Grandma Ada's brother William Alfred, any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Ralph Morley

"James William Jull a milliner (hat maker) and Mary Ann White a nurse, emigrated from Somerset County and Cornwall County England in the mid 1850's. They met and married in Sydney where they lived for a time before moving to Nimmitabel on the Monaro Highway near Bombala, Mary had a brother living there.

Ada the eldest daughter in a family of three boys and six girls was born at Bombala a town in N.S.W. on the Monaro highway south of Cooma and about 70 km. north of the Victoria border. the date of her birth  5th April 1860. Zilla was one of Ada' sisters.

Jamas William Jull was her father her mother being a Mary Ann (White). The family moved to Drayton on the Darling Downs where Mary's brother Henry was living, James made a living making and selling hats. When Toowoomba began to be settled they shifted there continuing the business.

Henry White took up 1280 acres at Haden in 1876 and James and Mary took up the adjoining block of 1280 acres in 1879, these properties are on the left as you travel from Haden to Goombungee. James and Mary's property's name was "Arlington".

Ada married George Cooke son of Richard Cooke and Mary (Brown) immigrants from Ireland who settled first near Inverell N.S.W. but in the 1871 took up several thousand acres on the top of the range farming Emu Creek station below the range on the north. The name of George cook's property was "mossdale"  a property of some 3600 acers, it was situated on the Haden Evergreen road on the very top of the range Mt. Cooke the highest point for thirty miles around was on the property.

Ada and George were married on 04/08/1881 in the home of James william Jull at Gomaran via Gowrie Junction on the Darling Downs just west of Toowoomba.

Ada was killed by a car while she was crossing Adelaide Street Brisbane, 18/06/1937 She had just received her pension and was going to buy some dinner.  Ada was laid to rest in the Toowong Cemetery, while her husband George Cooke passed away on 24/09/1940 he to was buried in the Toowong cemetery."

Hi Ralph,

Sadly, I cannot shed any further light on the mystery unfortunately.  All the information we have is already displayed on our site.

Subject: Researching Ada Letita Falkner from Towamba

Hullo Ian,

I am trying to trace my fathers grandmother Ada Letitia Falkner. She lived at Towamba and I believe she was born around 1874. Her mother's name was Catherine and she married James Davis in 1890 at the Presbyterian Church in Eden I can find marriage records and death records but nothing on her birth. I found some info from another researcher who listed her as Ada Letita (Croft) Falkner. This researcher is not prepared to give me any info they have on her. The marriage certificate says she was under 21ys at the time of marriage and her mother Catherine gave permission for the marriage. I noticed the information on the relationship between Anthony Falkner and Catherine Crofts and but two and two together but Ada is not listed amongst the children on the site

I can find nothing on her husband James Davis other than the wedding record and I think I have found his death

Ada's death certificate listed her father as George but how reliable this is I am not sure as she died in 1950 after a second marriage and my Grandmother did not tell her children of her mother's second marriage. At my grandmothers funeral a lady came up to my Aunt an introduced herself as a step sister of my grandmother!!!

Really enjoy the website and appreciate anything you may be able to tell me

Cheers, Lyn Byrne

Hi Lyn,

Sadly, we have nothing more to add to your quest, you have already seen everything we know on this family so far.

It is truly sad that some people still persist with a possessive attitude towards information which only sharing can enrich the enjoyment of the research.  Fortunately, the folks who make the Monaro Pioneers website what is DO NOT share this selfish and self cantered view.  In my experience, these negative and possessive people are very small in number and thank god the vast majority of people are good, generous and helpful folks who enjoy helping others.  There is an old saying "what goes around, comes around"  and hopefully our site is a good example thereof - if you can gain something from our site and give something in return then we are all enriched by the process.  Therein ends the sermon.

I am interested in information on the Kirklands as they are part of my maternal grandmothers' family  At present I am interested in Mary daughter of Henry and Eliza Ann who was (as per your site) born in 1869 at Bungawalbyn near Lismore.  I have searched for a registration of her birth without success and wondered where this information was obtained - family bible or records or from her death certificate?  I just would like to be able to varify it the information and would be grateful for your assistance.

Gloria Pugh

Hi Gloria,

The information was supplied by Terry Howard.

The details were supplied thus...

Extract From 'Fabric of a Family' by Doug Parbery - Mary Kirkland (1869-?).Was born at Bungawalbyn near Lismore, possibly at the home of Eliza's parents during a visit since the family was again living in Bega two years later. She married John Thomas Clark in 1895 and they had a family of at least eight:- Iva A. (Les?) (1895); Bruce J. (1896); Albert J. (1897); Helen B. (1898); Vida (1899 m Thompson); Lynda M. (1900); Laura M. 1903; Roy C. W. (1904).

However, I now believe her birth was at least registered in Eden, NSW as the NSW BDM Index has the following entries....

Hello Barbara / Ian,

Thank you for your work on the Monaro Pioneers.

I am a descendant of Mr Daniel Gowing and found the information on line very interesting. I think I have found one piece of missing information in the geneology.  Clement John Kelly (born Bega 1878) first marriage was to Clara Anne Morgan in 1906 - NSW BDM Registration No. 10229/1906.  Clement John Kelly and Clara Anne Morgan had 3 children George Kelly, Tom Kelly and Leslie John Edward Kelly.

Leslie John Edward Kelly was my grandfather.  Apparently his mother (Clara Anne Morgan) died when he was quite young and I believe that Clement John remarried and that the marriage to Sarah E H. Roberts in 1926 was his second marriage (as he was born in 1878 he would have been 48 at in 1926 which would have been very old for a first marriage).

Leslie John Edward Kelly married Mavis Hayward and they had two children Russell Leslie Kelly (my father) and Allan Kelly.

I hope this information is useful.  If I can help further please let me know. I have attached a copy of a document which is work in progress that summarises my family history.  I thought this may be of interest.

Hi Ian,

I think Ben Kelly would have forwarded You all of this, but in case he hasn't. All yours!   It is great to see the descendants looking at info,   and wishing to contribute and add further.. In this case the newspaper clipping photo you used, has sat treasured, for a lifetime in our old family album.  Now his contact,  really reminds me of what great work you do sharing the joy around for the right people to see and connect to,  What a gift!!!.. Without you, that old photo would have remained isolated.  Keep up the great work!!

All my best

Hi Barbara,

Yes I received his information. Thanks for the kind words, but you should take the credit because you donated the material in the first place and without the support of folks like yourself, the MP website would be very limited indeed. It does certainly give one a good feeling though and encouragement to keep going.

Hi Monaro Pioneers,

It was more than a few years ago when I first contacted this membership group. My husband is a KISS but at the time I could not make a link that fit the Monaro website. Since then much has been learned and needs to be shared.  I have contacted a number of the members over the past few years so I have copied this to each of you listed as contributors to the Kiss side of the Monaro Pioneers. Hopefully it is useful and accurate.

I look forward to any and all feedback.

P.S. I wish my maiden name of Kelly was as easy to research as the Kiss side has been! LOLs I live in hope!

Subject: Power stories for the Monaro Pioneers website

Dear Ian,

I have finally (I hope) completed all of the 15 stories as far as I am able and will be very pleased to see them published on your excellent website. I shall send each story and its photos separately.

The John and Mary Power story and the Michael and Jane Power story will replace the ones you already have on the site. I had an editor friend help me with the formatting of the stories and I have attached the instructions I gave her. I have reduced all of the photos to a width of 300 pixels with the exception of some landscape photos and some photos of large groups of people which are 600 pixels wide. I have indicated in the text where the photos should go should you be able to embed them. If not, the captions should be used with the photos if they are placed in some other location.

I have checked and rechecked the texts and photos several times but I'm sure that there will still be some errors that have evaded my attention so please let me know of any that you come across please Ian. With best regards, Bryan Power

Hi Bryan,

Thank you for all the stories and photos, I have completed the publication of your material on our website.  The John Power story page has a link from the Pioneer Index entry page for John Power.  On the Story page for John, there is individual links to each child's story.  I have also placed appropriate links on the Henry Agnew, Joseph Hyde, Thomas Geraghty, John George Jess and Patrick Pendergast pages. I hope this meets your approval.

Regards, Ian

Dear Ian,

Thank you so much for publishing the stories on the website site and for presenting them so well. I am pleased that you were able to embed the photos with the stories. Just a small point that you will be able to fix, I'm sure. In the story of John Power jnr and Henry Power the data in the lists of their children's names are out of alignment. It is a great pleasure and relief for me to see the stories so safely recorded.I'll send all my rellies an email today to tell them how to access the website. Again, many thanks Ian.

With warm regards, Bryan

Hi Bryan,

I have completed (hopefully) the update of our database records from the information in your stories and have republished the Descendant reports for the following:

John Power, Michael Power, Patrick Pendergast, Henry Agnew, John George Jess, Robert Alexander, Thomas Geraghty, Morgan Joseph Thornton and Thomas Tracey.

That was quite an exercise but worth the effort with all the extra information now available. Thanks again for your very generous contribution.

Subject: re atwell family history

Hi Pattrick,

My name is Robyn Baxter & I am researching my family history. I googled Robert Atwell  to try & find some history on my family members & The Monaro Pioneer Project popped up & I found other family members names as well. It said his wife was Eleanor Blundell, wife 2 Katurah Elizabeth & child Alfred Sydney Atwell. I was trying to access this info from the site but those names just kept popping back up. Is it possible for the info on this family be emailed to me please. Robert Atwell was my greatgrandfather, but his wife was Isabella Ellen Everett. Robert's sister was Katurah Elizabeth Atwell. Alfred Atwell was his brother.  An Alfred Atwell did marry Eleanor Blundell & I believe had a female child Named Alma. I am still not sure if that Alfred is connected to me.  I think this family is mine but the info appears wrong so I would appreciate seeing what you have on the site.  I would then be happy to share any information I have to correct any wrongs.

Kind Regards, Robyn

Hi Robyn,

All the information we have is contained in our database which has a search facility on our home page.  You can down load information from there if you so wish.

http://www.monaropioneers.com/

Regards, Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the reply. I have been onto the site & noted that you have changed Robert's wife to Isabella Ellen Everett.  Is it possible to find out who gave you this information as if it is my Robert Atwell the information is wrong. He did not have a son Alfred Sydney Atwell. He did have brothers Alfred, Charles & Albert.  Robert Atwell  & his wife Isabella Ellen had 5 daughters. Dorothy born 1894, Beatrice born 1896, Mildred born 1901 ( my grandmother), Phyllis  born 1905 & Ella born 1909. Isabella died 1914. & is buried at Mays Hill Cemetery. Robert died 1925 & is buried at Rookwood.

Robert's sister Keturah (sometimes spelt Katurah but on her brothers death certificate its spelt Keturah), married Robert Delaney.  There is a BDM ( death) entry for an Alfred Sidney Atwell as being the child of Robert & Keturah Atwell  & an entry for him being listed as a child of Keturah & Robert Delaney so we have a problem somewhere there an I now tend to think maybe he was born out of wedlock but can't find his birth.  This is the Alfred Sydney that married Eleanor Blundell & I believe their child was Alma.

This is confusing to me so it must look jibberish to you but if its my family I would like things to be right or removed so thats why I was wondering where it first came from.  I was also wondering what the Atwell's link was to the Eden / Monaro area. All I can think of is the Eleanor Blundell side as she has a connection to Blundell's Cottage in Canberra.

I will leave it there, Thanks Robyn

Hi Robyn,

There is no specific contributor for that information, Alfred Sydney Atwell/Delaney is in our database because he was the husband of Eleanor Blundell.  We have many families in our database from the Queanbeyan area. From the little extra research I have done, I believe Alfred Sydney was the son of Robert Delaney and Keturah Elizabeth Atwell, born Sidney A. Delany 1887 Penrith (29836/1887).  Why he changed his name to his mother's maiden name I don't know.

Subject: McDonald Family History

Dear Ian,

My name is Beau Simpson and I have been searching for information  about my great grandmother Catherine McDonald for the last 18 years. On the Monaro Pioneers site I believe the the Catherine born to Archibald and Ann McDonald 1853 is in fact my great grandmother. My family story is a little strange as my grandfather was informally adopted some time shortly after his birth by Alfred and Ellen Woodbride of Brunswick Victoria.

I have a copy of his birth certificate which I have attached, he was born 27-5-1882 unfortunatley the writing is difficult to read and I am unable to read the placeof birth, think King St. His mother does not disclose the fathers name, als I am not sure if the information about her place of birth is correct. On the certificate you will see her handwriting which is quite distinctive and I have also attached

another certificate re, the marriage of George Young to Catherine McDonald at Kilmore 1871. You will notice the witness signature as being the same as on my grandfathers birth cert.

I am not suggesting the Catherine being married is my grandmother but the witness maybe certainly this is the same distinktive hand writing. George young is the father of George William McDonald young who married Zoe Buck and they in tturn had a son George that married Ellen Selinda Woodbridge the daughter of Alfred and Ellen.

I would like to find where Catherine is burried if known and any further details .I suspect that it may be in the Kilmore, Bylands area but am unable to confirm.

I have written the story of my grandfather and my search and would gladly sent this to you if interested it details his Boer War service and service in the 8th. Light Horse at Gallopoli.

My search started in a rather strange way and has taken many interesting turns including finding lost relatives, at least unknown to me. An interesting thing is that as my father changed his name

my fathers name is Simpson his father Woodbridge and his McDonald Any help you may be abe to give will be greatly appreciated

regards, Beau Simpson

Hi Beau,

Unfortunately, we have no information on Catherine McDonald that might assist you.

Kind regards, Ric Dunn, New Zealand

To the Monaro Pioneers database                       23 February 2010

Hello Ian Harvey,

In regard to, descendants of Patrick Whelan compiled from the Monaro Pioneers database after some additional research by Ian Harvey:  19/11/07
http://www.monaropioneers.com/whelan_Patrick.htm#i58790

and in particular, descendants of 2 M i Roger Whelan - namely:

F iv. Catherine Teresa Whelan, born on August 8, 1875 in Bega, NSW32 and baptised on September 26, 1875 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Bega, NSW was my grandmother.

Catherine Teresa Whelan (known by family and friends as Kitty) married Laurence Dunn on April 29, 1903 in the Catholic Church, Waihi, Hauraki District, New Zealand. Their marriage licence number is 1903/2271.
“Kitty” died August 17, 1951 in Auckland, NZ. Her death certificate number is 1951/26032.
They had 4 children all of whom are now dead.

Of perhaps greater interest to you, Catherine had a sister whose title was Rev Mother Mary Alacoque.
Our family records say Rev Mother Mary Alacoque died on June 27, 1923.

During my search for ancestors of Catherine Whelan, Roger Whelan and Jane Grealy and my finding the Monaro Pioneers database, I also found Rev Mother Mary Alacoque.

Rev Mother Mary Alacoque died June 27, 1923 and was buried in section BRC1, row C and plot 8 in the Blackheath Cemetery, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia.
Whilst her age at death is listed on the Blue Mountain registry as being 49, I believe Rev Mother Mary Alacoque, a known sibling of Catherine Teresa Whelan is most likely to be the person named in the Monaro Pioneers database as:

F i. Mary Whelan born on January 18, 1871 in Bega, NSW29 and was baptised on September 4, 1872 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Bega, NSW.

I have not been successful in finding either a NSW death certificate number for Mary Whelan, or indeed Rev Mother Mary Alacoque.
Perhaps your people will have greater success?

The link to information on Rev Mother Mary Alacoque’s burial is:

http://www.bmcc.nsw.gov.au/cemetery_register/map/maps.cfm?rid=3100&s=1&tid=0.811071843577

I commend you for the good work you have done with the Monaro Pioneers database and thank you for making it accessible for people such as myself wanting to find our ancestors.
Through your database I have found information on my great grandparents Roger Whelan and Anne Jane Grealy, names I already had - but that was all. Thanks to your Monaro Pioneers database we now know much more about the Whelans and the Grealys.

It would be great to find some photo’s of our ancestors but I am very pleased with my efforts to date.

I trust the information I have supplied is of some use to you?
If you are successful in learning the death certificate number for Mary Whelan or Rev Mother Mary Alacoque, I would very much appreciate knowing it.

Kind Regards. Ric Dunn
Grandson of Catherine Teresa Whelan, Great Grandson of Roger Whelan and Anne Jane Grealy

Hi Ric,

Thanks for the information and kind words. The NSW BDM Index shows that Elizabeth Whelan, daughter of Roger and Annie died in 1923 in Katoomba Registration district, NSW 13244/1923.  Blackheath would have been part of this district so I am guessing that it is Elizabeth and not Mary who died as Rev Mother Mary Alacoque.  Perhaps Mary, like her sister went to NZ?

Regards, Ian

Subject: Charles William Cooper ANZAC

Hello Ian,

Regarding the Anzac pages,I may be able to put some flesh on William Charles Cooper.

Charlie was married to my paternal grandmother, Kathleen Anne nee Cantrill. They came to Australia aboard the SS Euripides in 1915. Charlie was a steward on the ship and my grandmother, about 15 and sailed from England with her mother, her father had died in 1899 and her mother Mary Cantrill nee Hayes remarried William Arnold Bullen, at this stage I cannot find any reference to him coming to Australia but a William Arnold Bullen died in Sydney in 1941.

Charley signed off from the ship in Melbourne and made his way back to Sydney, he enlisted in the AIF , he and 'Kit' were married at Enmore on 20th September 1915, at that time his address was 'Soldier  The camp, Liverpool.

He sailed on HMAT Beltana that was one of the 38 ships that formed a convoy at Albany WA, he completed the 7 days Field punishment No. 2 for  'urinating in the lines' and embarked to the WW1 front in France near Etaples. He was wounded and was transferred back to England where his recuperation was somewhat hindered by the ' Spanish flu" that was prevalent at the time. When he was fit again he was sent back to the front, again at Etaples, the records show that he was wounded again and went to the clearing station and because the wound was minor he was treated and went back to his unit.

On 15 February 1918  he was cleaning his rifle in his dug out, his dugout companion Sydney Paul Bernasconi was also cleaning his rifle when it is said to have exploded wounding Charlie severely, the injuries as described we ,fractured pubis, lacerated bladder, torn urethra,a hole in his bowel and a wound penetrating his stomach. On 16 February 1918 he succumbed to his injuries and died,he was 23 years old.

A courts martial was convened and Sydney Paul Bernasconi was found responsible for the death and was awarded 40 days field punishment No 2, It should be noticed that Charlie was awarded 7 days Field Punishment No 2 for urinating in the lines.

The official description for Field Punishment No. 2 is " :the Manual of law, 1914 explains it as being kept in irons ( fetters or handcuffs ) which may be secured to prevent escape. Whilst being "subjected to the like labour, employment , restraint and dealt with in a like manner as if he were under a sentence of imprisonment with hard labour."

Charlie's fatal wounds were declared to be accidentally received thereby denying any pension that was due to his NOK, originally his papers first indicated that he died of wounds received in action, this was changed to accidentally received.

As an aside, in the ships gathered at Albany WA was the ship 'Hororata', aboard this ship is another of the ANZACs in your file, Raymond Monaghan Hayes. He was my maternal great uncle, there is a memorial in Cooma named after him, I'm not sure if he was the first man from the Snowy or the first Australian killed in WW1.

Any further information you wish I will do my best.  Cheers, Ted Washbrook

Thanks Ted,

Regards, Ian

Subject: Descendants of Alexander Crawford

Hi Ian

Whilst I am not related to the above family, I had noted in the Monaro narrative applicable to Alexander Crawford, that the ship he and his family arrived in 1838 upon was unknown. I was doing some research on another family when I lucked upon the Crawford family. The ship they arrived on was called the “PORTLAND” and arrived in Sydney on 18th December 1838.

The family was listed as Alexander age 40 a shepherd, Mary 38, sons John 19,Archibald 5, daughters Flora 17,Margaret 15,Elizabeth 12,Catherine 10,Mary 7 and Jenny, an infant of 8 months. I am hoping this little bit of information in regards to the ship will be helpful to the descendents.

Regards, Michelle

Thank you Michelle,

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Robinson

Dear Ian,
I am still gathering information regarding my family which includes the Chapmans, the Sercombes, the Hunters and the Williams (descendants of Nash).  My great grandmother, Eliza Ellen Williams married John Robinson at Tantawangelo on June 25th 1874, witnessed by George Robinson (who I might presume to be the groom's brother) and Caroline Isabel Williams who was the bride's sister.  However, as much as I have searched the database I cannot find my John Robinson among the Robinsons on the site and because of the place of the marriage and the connection with the Williams, I would have thought he would have been of the Monaro area and a member of Charles Robinson's family.  Are you able to throw light on this? Any pointers you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

You will find your Great Grandmother under the Robert Williams (1815) Daniel Tindall pages.  We do have John Robinson born September 25, 1854 in Dapto (no death information as yet) married to Eliza Ellen Williams.  John Robinson's parents were James and Mary.  We have no information as yet to connect this Robinson family with the other Robinson's of the Eden/Monaro area. John's birth certificate and marriage certificate may shed some further light.

Regards, Ian

Hello Ian,

Thank you for the updated info. for Richard Johnston on the Monaro Pioneers site.

I have noticed on The Monaro Pioneers Project - Pioneers an Settlers Database some information you may like to add.

Under the heading John Henry Johnston b 15 feb 1884 d 26 Aug 1941 who married Inez Mealing b 1892 d 28 Jan 1965 the new information is for their children:

After Ruby Martha Johnston, add Vera Johnston Born 1918 Died 28 July 1999. The remaining childrens names are correct. Also need to add Allan Johnston Born 24 Sept 1924 still living who was born before William Keith Johnston. Also Unknown Johnston should read William Keith Johnston b 6 April 1929, died March 17, 1997. This last addition is in regard to my father. Lastly Harold Johnston also one of the children died in the 1990's not sure what year.

Yours sincerely, Mrs Marilyn Costa

Subject: re Archibald Hugh McDonald ( M 25)

Hi Ian, I have been looking at the Monaro Pioneers Database and my grandfather was Archibald Hugh McDonald (M25). He is descendant of Alexander and Christina McDonald. What I found interesting is my mother(still living is listed as Evelyn) but he also had a son my mums brother Edward McDonald who has passed away and never married so he never had any children, my mother had 5 children 3 girls 2 boys. I do have photos of grandfather and can also give you dates and info. should it be of any interest to this site which is just so very  informative. I know my Great grandfather was Black Sandy my mum has talked about him over the years.I just thought it may be of some interest and I would love to see Uncle Ed's name on this sight. Thank you all for the incredible reading and the wonderful look into our family history. Regards Rhonda Perry ( daughter of Evelyn Dicker Nee Mc Donald)

Hi Rhonda,

Thanks for the kind words, yes we would be very grateful for any additional information and images you could contribute.

Hi Christene,

Unfortunately I do not have the Bega Cemetery Transcriptions so I am unable to help on that question. All the families you refer too are in the Monaro Pioneers database in varying degrees of completeness.  There is no specific contact for this information as it has been largely gathered by myself or supplied as part of other family contributions. Yes, I believe Theresa Leplaw was the illegitimate daughter of Mahalia.

If there are any errors or omissions in our information and you can help to rectify same, we would be very grateful.  The same applies to any additional information your may care to add to our project. Sorry I cannot be more help in your quest.

Regards, Ian

After a little bit of researching I think that maybe her parents are Thomas Hayes (64875) & Anastasia Mary Steward (64888). It’s possible that Anastasia may have been pregnant with Sybil when Thomas embarked on his military service in 1917. Thomas returned from service in 1919, then marrying Anastasia in 1920.

On Sybil’s death records her parents are listed as Thomas & Stasia. What do you think ??.

Denis Victor FILMER – born abt 1939/1940. Died July 1959, Nowra NSW 20324/1959. Age 19 years.

ID: 116743 – Robert James LITTLE – I have found no concrete evidence to think that he married Mary J. Burke (89370) in 1881. In 1881 Robert and Ann were still in the process of completing their family with the birth of William Johnson in 1881and May Magdaline in 1883. His obituary mentions his marriage to Miss Annie Constable. There is no mention of any other wives.  Ann’s obituary says that after she married Robert Little, they took up residence at Dwyers Creek, Moruya where they lived for the next 60 years. Both Robert and Ann’s obituaries state that they were both buried in the CE Section, Moruya Cemetery. I haven’t located any headstones for them but I assumed they were buried together.

A correction needs to be made for the D.O.D. of Frederick Austin CONSTABLE (157882). I haven’t found anything relating to his death yet, but I would gather that he is probably no longer with us. The date which is currently on the database belongs to Frederick Athol CONSTABLE – born Forbes NSW 49067/1914. Died 16 July 1995, Forbes NSW.  Son of Herbert A. Constable and Florence M. Riley.

I think this will do for the time being. Regards, Cathrine Constable.

Hi Catherine,

Thank you very much, your help has been enormous and is greatly appreciated.

Subject: Re. Family of Albert Edward Shannon

Hi Ian,

Just came across the Monaro Pioneer website and had a great time looking up our family. Amazed to find our Jewish heritage... we always assumed Shannon was Irish!

We can help with more information if you are interested.

56. Albert Edward Shannon (Lewis4, Israel Laurence Lewis 3, Jacob Lawrence2, Isaac1) was born in 1884 in Bombala, NSW214 and died in 1968 in Newtown, NSW215 at age 84. Another name for Albert was Bert.

Albert married Elizabeth E. Jose, daughter of John Benjamin Jose and Selina Warne, in 1919 in Cooma, NSW.534 Elizabeth was born in 1898 in Cooma, NSW.535Another name for Elizabeth was Bessie.

M    i. Laurence Edward Shannon was born on August 17, 1920 in Cooma, NSW and died on July 15, 2001 in Hammondville, NSW at age 80.

My mother Edith Fay Shannon (now 87) is sitting next to me as I write this. She tells me that her mother's name was Elizabeth Eliza.

My daughter and I took my mum back to Cooma a few years ago and had a great time finding relatives on head stones and church windows. My mum says her dad owned the picture theatre in Cooma, but had to sell it when the depression hit. The Cooma history book we bought seems to say other than this.

Re. your website...

Albert Shannon and Elizabeth Jose had 5 children altogether:

Laurie Shannnon (as above)

Edith Fay Shannon (known as Fay) Born 1922 Living Married Ron Gettens (died 23.2.1969) then Allan O'Regan (died 30.5.1995)

Barbara Shannon Born  1924 Living

Francis E (Frank) Shannon Born next, but died at 4 months 1926

Enid Ruth (known as Ruth) Born 1933 (?) Living

Also Laurie and Joan Shannon had 4 children, not 5. Their first daughter was Rosalie Diane Shannon - she went by Diane as a child, then changed to Rosalie. Your records have her as 2 separate people. Joan is still living. Do you want further information on the next generation of children? Thanks for the great site - really fascinating!

Regards, Pam

Hi Pam,

Thanks for the information, I have updated our website and database. We would be very grateful for any additional information you can provide.

Subject: Fw: DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS AKERS

Dear Ian,

I am writing in regards to the following entry on the Monaro Pioneers website:

248. Matilda Maude Blyton (Jeremiah Blyton4, Eliza Jane Smith3, Sophia Akers2, Thomas1) was born on August 17, 1883 in Cooma, NSW1161 and died in 1955 in Paddington, NSW1162 at age 72.

Matilda married Henry Tiernan Mason, son of William Mason and Charlotte, on March 25, 1902 in St. Barnabas' Church, Sydney, NSW.3851 Henry was born on March 25, 1881 in Sydney, NSW and died in 1939 in Canterbury, NSW3852 at age 58.

I am Matilda Maud's Great Granddaughter, and would like to correct some of the information above. I have Matilda Maud's birth certificate stating her date of birth as 17 July 1883 in Woolway NSW and that her name was Matilda Maud (no e)

I also have Matilda Maud's marriage certificate stating she married Henry TUDOR Mason (son of Henry Mason and Martha Skinner) born in London, England on 25 March 1881.  Henry Tudor Mason came to Australia on board the "Potosi" in 1882 with his family as free settlers.  Henry Tudor Mason died in the Bronx, New York USA in July 1967

Further, I would like to add that the wife of their child, Marcus Ashby Tudor Mason ie, Mona Doreen Fitzsimons died 16 June 2000 at Chatswood (I am their granddaughter!). Also, their place of marriage was St Marthas Church Strathfield, NOT Burwood.

I would really appreciate these details being updated, as I do refer some family members to your fantastic site and it is disconcerting to see obvious errors!!!

Thank you, Regards, Cathy Nagy

Hi Cathy,

Thank you for the information, the website has now been rectified.

Subject: Looking for info about Dawson family from Bega

Hi Ian,

My name is Paul Dawson and I would like to contact anyone who might be able to provide any information re my Great Grandfather Thomas Wilson Dawson and Great Great Grandfather John Dawson who were in the Bega area during the mid 1800's.

The only information I have is that John was a Storekeeper/Farmer and Thomas was drowned in the Bega River 9/5/1871. They may have come from Nova Scotia around 1859.

Also, if anyone in the Tindall family would like to contact me via email I can provide more info about the descendants of Jessie Adeline Tindall as she was my paternal Grandmother. Thanks. Regards, Paul Dawson

Hi Paul,

We don't have any specific contacts for the Dawson information we have in our database unfortunately.  If there is any other information about this family you can provide I will happily add a new index entry. The known contacts for the Tindall family are listed on the Daniel Tindall web page on our site. Could you please supply me with the descendant information for Jessie Adeline Tindall so that I may add you as another contact for the Tindall Family?

Regards, Ian

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Additional Information

Ian

Thanks for the great work on the website. Both my mother's family and part of my wife's family are from the Monaro so we find it great to be able to look up information from time to time. My mother is Mary Daphne Welch the only listed child on your website of Claude Leslie Royston Welch and Cecily May Reid. Claude is No 13 on your site in the line of John Daniel Welch. Apart from my mother, Mary Daphne, Claude and Cecily had another child, Alfred Gregory who was born in Adaminaby on the 5th March 1921 and died in Sydney 1982. I thought that you might like to add Alfred Welch to your website. Also, I have all the details of Alfred's children and grandchildren, the next generations if you wish.

Regards and thanks once again. Greg McGrath

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the information, I would be delighted to add the information on Alfred's family to our database, just be aware that we do not publish any details other than name for individuals known to be living.

Subject: Brown Mountain plaque

Dear David

The attached article was recently published in the Bega District News & the  Cooma Monaro Express. Would you be so kind as to include it in your newsletter & on the  Monaro Pioneers website.

I will forward  photos separately.

Kind regards, Margaret Parker

Following on from a family reunion of the Green/Alcock families held in Nimmitabel & Bemboka in March 2008 it was decided to recognise the achievements of four pioneers of the Monaro (Kybeyan NSW).

With funds raised during the reunion it was agreed  to erect a bronze plaque in their memory. With the assistance of NPWS who generously donated their time, they placed the plaque last week(22/01/2010) at Fred Piper’s Lookout on the Brown Mountain. The plaque is in recognition of the efforts of these four pioneers of the Monaro who paved the way for what is now the Snowy Mountains Highway from Nimmitabel to the foot of the Brown Mountain. The spelling of Nimitybelle was correct in those days & further research revealed the J Trigell to be John Trigell.

I have photographed  the plaque in situ & will  forward it separately.

This is an extract of the event taken from an article reported in a Bega newspaper in 1857.

‘the Nimitybelle folk subscribed a sum of 100 pounds as a reward to the man who could find and mark a track on which a horse might be safely led from the tablelands to the foot of the Brown mountain. Four venturesome young men took up the challenge; J Trigell, Arthur Alcock, James Green and Joseph Hammond….. The party succeeded in marking a line, nine miles down from Nimitybelle, or from Pole Flat to Stoney Pinch, near the lake where Irwin’s Mill now stands and for about thirteen miles upwards… at this stage they ran out of water and provisions. They eventually struck the river at the foot of the mountain near Nelson’s Flat. They were in an exhausted condition and their clothes were torn to shreds.’

James Green was my great grandfather.

Margaret Parker

Thanks for the information Margaret, I’ll ensure that your article/photos are included in the next Newsletter. I have also forwarded to Ian so he can update the website.

Rgds, David Knox

Hi David,

The material and photos are now up on the site and accessible via the "Towns" link on the home page.....

Subject: Monaro Site

Hi Pattrick

I have been researching the York family history and found one of your sites on 'Billilingera' with the attached comments that should not be assumed.

BILLILINGERA

Contributed by Jen Swales <janese-at-bigpond.com> 09.10.06

Billilingera Station.

1848-1850…In Hancock’s lists.

Billy Linpepa (sic) Cosgrove and York were non-residents of the property. Had a good many sheep but no cattle..

If the York’s and Cosgrove were not living there, shepherds or a manager would have been settled there to look after their interests. I wonder how many great cattle runs in Australia were run by overseers and shepherds who were most likely ticket of leave men. All the glory going to the owner, I guess that is the difference between the classes of rich and poor.

I object to this assumption and would like to clarify this comment. 'All the glory going to the owner, I guess that is the difference between the classes of rich and poor.'

Charles York was born on the convict ship William Pitt to convict Mary York. His older brother Henry was transported as a convict on the Fame 11 years later. Mary York married William Cosgrove when she arrived in Australia (note they were both convicts). William Cosgrove who became a settler at South Creek, Sydney and was a guide to Governor Macquarie and was appointed Chief Constable but was killed by bushrangers soon after. He left Mary 1000 pounds which is assumed was used for the expedition by Henry and Charles York and John Cosgrove to the Monaro in 1829.

Henry York and John Cosgrove lived in the Monaro district for many years and managed many stations. Henry York only went back to Sydney after his wife dies in a fire in Adaminaby.

As you can see the comment that they were 'rich' should not be assumed. There was many family tragedies and they worked hard to arrive where they were. I am stongly offended by this type of comment.

regards Cheryl Areke (nee York)

Hi Jen,

Do you want to sort this out or would you prefer we did it?

Hello Pattrick.

I have been assisting Ann McIntyre with research regarding the ancestors of Edward McIntyre who was married to Maria King. His mother Bridget's death was registered in Cooma in 1878 and I wondered if she was buried in Cooma. I think her husband James died in Sydney before she came to live in Cooma.

Robyn

Hi Robyn,

Sorry, we have no information on a Bridget McIntyre being buried in Cooma in 1878. The information we have in our database shows Edward McIntyre's parents as Edward James McIntyre (b 1826 Dalgety, Fife, Scotland d 1894 Liverpool, NSW) and Bridget Galaher (d 1895 Redfern, NSW) .  If you have more accurate information we would be very grateful if you could assist us to correct our database.

Subject: DAY FAMILY

Good morning John,

I came across your email on the Monara Pioneers Website, regarding the Day family.

I have been contacted by I believe is a descendant of this family Anthony Day.  He came across and story I had posted to one of the Rootsweb List about a convict by the name of Evan Brindle.  I carried out the Brindle research on behalf of a work mate, Wayne Brindle.  Anthony was very interested in this story as a daughter of convict Evan Brindle and his wife Lucy Walker, Lucy Ann Brindle married William Day in 1880 in Muswellbrook. He provide this information to assist me to get back further into the Day family.

Anthony's father was Colin Lawrence Day, his father was William Lawrence Day and his father was Albert Lawrence Day (born 1880) and his parents were William and Lucy Ann Day (nee Brindle).

I then began to work backwards from there and found the parents of William Day born 1852 were James and Mary Ann Day (nee Harmer).

The parents of James Day born 1827, were Thomas Day and Susannah Stubbs, who married in 1816 at St Phillip's C of E on Church Hill, Sydney.

Thomas Day was a shipwright and lived with his family in Kent Street in Sydney Town.  Thomas Day was born to Thomas Day and Mary Clayton in 1795.  Thomas and Mary Clayton were married in 1790.

I find that Mary Clayton was tried at the Old Bailey on 2nd April 1788 and sentenced to 7 years transportation and arrived on the Lady Juliana (the story of this voyage is written about in the book "The Floating Brothel" by Sian Rees).  However, I cannot find when Thomas Day arrived.  I have found some mention of a Thomas Day on the Colonial Secretary Index 1788-1825, however not sure which one he is.  Was he a convict or was he a soldier?

I hope I have the family correct and if you can help me out with Thomas Day Snr, the husband of Mary Clayton, I would be very grateful.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you, Regards, Janice

Hi Janice,

I am confused as to who you are directing your email request too?  Is it me or "John"?  If it is John, then in order for us to be able to connect you with him you will have to supply the page link address where you found his email so that we can then determine which person is involved.  We get hundreds of these emails and your description is insufficient for me to identify who it is your referring too.

Unfortunately, we have no information that might assist you.

Hi Ian, If you wouldn't mind taking at a peek at Mary Kathleen Nickle's ( Jack Britten) real death date  please.

if she is Jack's wife, then I know she was alive in early 1970's as she made me tea and scones, on a visit down the coast, I remember coming back and promptly sending a gift of a pair of fur lined boots as the lino was lifting off the floor every time the wind blew, and let me tell you they were a hardy old pair, we couldn't feel many of our moving parts when we left that old farmhouse, and to them it was just a wee bit on the cool side

anyway according to Col  see below.

all best, Barbara

Hi Barbara, it would appear that the information on Mary Kathleen Britten's (nee Nickle) death date is incorrect.   I had a quick look at NSW BDM index and could not find her passing in Bega in 1952.   On the Ryerson Index, there is a Kathleen Mary Britten Death 24 Jul 1996 (late of Mt Ousley) Sydney Morning Herald, this may be her.   I have also attached the 1954 Electoral Roll for Bega which shows she was still alive then.   Her address is different from her husband's, maybe one was the farm and the other the family house.   This is also the case with William Blaxter Britten and his wife Dulcie Jean.   Will keep looking

Regards, Col Blaxter

Dear Ian,

Hope you are not drowned out with all the rain,

I have a bit more family information to be added to the Joshua Britten page please

I can also provide some basic info on the Blaxter family which I will forward under separate cover,

As for Caroline Margaret, she was the seventh child of nine of Joseph Blaxter and Mary Ann Maria Stone m. 1864.   Joseph was a convict and was transported to Van Dieman's land in 1850.   His father and mother were Joseph Blaxter and Hannah Guyton.   Joseph, the father, served in the Royal Marines and died in the Naval Hospital at Greenwich in London.

Will log on to old bailey and see if I can find details of the crime and forward you...seems he hightailed it to Eden fairly early in the peace.

All best, Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for the information, I have updated the Britten page.  We did have a lot of information on the Blaxter family in the database but now I think it is "complete" and have added an index entry for Joseph Blaxter.  Please supply Colin's email address (with his permission of course) so that he may be properly represented as a contributor contact on the Blaxter page.

I found her death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, on the 26 November 1946, which states she died on 24 November 1946, her husband as Frank Higgins and her address as 34 Simpson Streeet, Auburn.

Please pass this email on to Robyn Croft, thanks.

From Mary Nicholls

Dear Ian,

A bit more on my previous email, info for Robyn Croft.

I added Emily Higgins children's names into the search field in the SMH of 26.11.1946 and I found the names of the following children listed in Emily Higgins death notice:

loved mother of Jessie Blanche Norman Ron.

This all ties back to the names mentioned for Edward Alexander Crawford (born 1864 Cooma), on the Monaro Pioneers Website, in his relationship with Emily Elizabeth Peasley. I am happy for you to pass on my email and contact details to Robyn Croft.

Bye for now, Mary Nicholls

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Kirk Family

I am trying to trace my g grandmother, namely Elizabeth Kirk b abt 1860 who according to marraige and death certificates was born in Cooma area.  Her birth is not listed on NSW BDM and her parents are not named on marraige certificate.  I feel that there could be a connection to your pioneer family of Alexander Kirk as her only son was named Hugh Alexander (Hugh being paternal grandfather)  I wondered about Fanny Kirk maybe she changed her name to Elizabeth as I can find no further trace of Fanny.

I am going to be touring in the Cooma area in March and would welcome any suggestions you may have as to where I should look for any relative info.  Are there any schools in the area that would have records relating to 1865 - 1875 period? I would appreciate any help or suggestions you may have.

With thanks, Leonie Wood

Hi Leonie,

I personally have no knowledge of any information that might assist you but I think you should try the Mitchell Library in Sydney or the State Records Office in Kingswood. Pattrick, perhaps you might be able to suggest some better options?

Your ggrandmother is most likely Betsy Kirk (b1865) as "Betsy" was a common nickname or alternative for Elizabeth. If you would like to send me the details of Elizabeth Kirk and family I will try to help you as best I can.  Alexander Kirk married Mary Goulding according to the shipping records, his parents being John and Elizabeth and Mary's parents being Alexander and Mary.

Regards, Ian

No, I think you are on the right track, you need to just keep looking for places where she could be listed - Bdm's, Certificates, Family Forums, Cemeteries, Honour Rolls, Index's, Census, Schools (Dept), newspapers, Passenger Lists etc etc etc and try different names

Thank you Ian for your reply.   I am going to be in the Cooma area in a few weeks time and would appreciate if you could direct me to where I might find school records or similar.  The details for Elizabeth Kirk that I have are:

Born :. Cooma ABT 1860 according to marraige cert.

Married:  James Nelson in Leichart Sydney March 1884.  Aged 23

Daaughter born:  Redfern Sydney 1885  -  Ida

Daughter born    Sydney 1887   -  Amy

Son born Sydney 1890- Alexander Hugh

Family moved to Broken Hill early 1890's and then moved to New Zealand mid 1890s  She died in .  NZ 1935  Death cert also states born in Cooma NSW.  Both daughters birth certs state mother born in Cooma, sons birth cert states Bega.

I have considered that Betsy, daughter of Alexander and Mary could be my Elizabeth, but age is several years different.  Have you any suggestions as to how I could prove if this is the Elizabeth I am trying to trace?

I would appreciate any help you could give me and thank you for your time.

With regards, Leonie Wood

Hi Leonie,

I don't think you will find any facilities in Cooma that will assist you, I would try the State Records office in Kingswood first.

Hello Ian

I have just spent a wonderful couple of hours on the Monaro Pioneers website.

I am researching my great grandfather, James Cole (1849-1931). I understand that he was living in the Nimmitabel area and working at an abattoir before he was brought to Sydney where he died.  Would there be any information on abattoirsin the area. He also took bullock teams down Browns Mountain.

Thank you, Barbara Sharkey

Hi Barbara,

Sorry, we have no information as yet on any abattoirs in the Nimmitabel area.  Your Grandfather is not known to us either, was he born in the area?

Subject: Correction to Monaro Pioneers

Hello Ian

I was recently contacted by a Fred Sheehan of Bega and during the course of our correspondence, picked up an error for one of the people in your database.

Your entry shows:

Daniel Albert Sheehan, son of Daniel Sheehan and Anne Elizabeth Brown, in 1911 in Bega, NSW.3269 Daniel was born on July 26, 1883 in Bega, NSW3270 and died in 1934 in Bega, NSW3271 at age 51.

Daniel married Stella Brown in Bega in 1911 and one of their children, William Henry Sheehan (1914-2001) was my husband’s stepfather.  We know for a fact that Daniel Albert Sheehan was still alive in 1960 and, since I only started researching Pop Sheehan’s tree a couple of years ago and don’t have all certificates, the following death registration is most likely his:

16921/1967

SHEEHAN

DANIEL ALBERT

DANIEL DENNS

ANNIE

MORUYA

To clarify, the Daniel A Sheehan who died in 1934 is not he but did have similar parents, Daniel and Annie M, also in Bega.  They appear to have been married in Eden (near Bega) in 1997 and Annie’s maiden name was Smith (not brown) :

7566/1897

SHEEHAN

DANIEL

ANNIE M

EDEN

Their son (the one who died in 1934) was born in 1899:

Birth:

BEGA

Death:

If there is someone else I should contact regarding this, please let me know as I would be happy to do so.

Hi Gloria,

Thank you for the information, I have corrected our records.

Subject: RE: MONARO PIONEERS NEWSLETTER  -  January 2010 Edition

From:    "JANESE SWALES"

Date:    Wed, February 3, 2010 9:18 pm

Hullo David and Ian.

Is it possible to find out who contributed certain information to the Rootsweb's World site, regarding the Monaro Pioneers.

I ask this simply because I have discovered a great deal of information on 5 of my direct lines. If only it was all correct. In fact so much of it is

either guess work or straight from the BDM site. Without obtaining certificates, I don't see how anyone can put this information online. I am

concerned that any researcher looking for these families and taking what is written as gospel, will certainly be up that creek!

I have travelled extensively and visited a great many depositories for family information, amassed over 600 certificates, from around the world,

thousands of photos of graves, found many cousins, all for the sake of my own need to do family history.

I am certainly not ungrateful for any information that I find, especially if I do not have it, and I willingly share. I have a great many people contact me regarding the photos I have of Bredbo and Billilingera on the Monaro site. Some who have been related, others not, all asking for copies or help, which I have given happily. So I am not a grouch. I just thought I should make that clear.

I know the easiest thing to do would be to send you the correct information, but I am curious of whom else is researching my family. I have checked with two other cousins, both have not put any family information online. Both are as interested as I am as to where the information came from.

The families are. BENNETT/GILLIGAN/KENNEDY/MARTIN/RICHARDSON/AY YET/ . I am directly and indirectly related to over 50 families from the Monaro.

Warm regards Jen Swales.

Hi Jen,

I am unable to locate the families to which you refer without more specific detail unfortunately.  We have so many families with those surnames.

When we have a family listed on our Pioneers index which has been specifically contributed in full or in part by someone, we list that person as the contributor and potential contact for any one reading those pages.

Not all the families in our database have a Pioneers Index entry though; and some of the Pioneers Index entries have been generated from the database information without any identified contributor.

The information contained in the database has come from family submissions over the years and research by our team.  We specifically encourage anyone using our information to do their own validation of the details to ensure correctness as we have no direct control over the accuracy of the information supplied.  We have however, endeavoured where ever possible to list the BDM index reference as a source entry to provide a simple (but no

infallible) validation process plus a convenient means for each researcher to acquire certificates for verification where necessary.

Any date shown as just year only with no day and month is a clear indication that further detailed research is needed by any one using our information. The year is usually the year of registration, and the place being the registration district.  Obviously, the dates could and are often incorrect as registrations may have occurred some time after the event and the place of course is usually a major centre whereas the event may taken place in a small hamlet of village near by.

Yes, I am sure there has been guess work in many instances, but who amongst the vast army of family researchers has not "guessed" connections at some stage of their research.

The success of our project has been the ready willingness of the hundreds of people who have contributed original and/or correctional information.  Yes we may be displaying some information that is incorrect (but not deliberately), but if by displaying it we encourage people to contribute the right information our project continues to grow.  Our database on Rootsweb is the same, we have information that may be incorrect but seek input to help rectify that.

The Pioneers Index is not complete and we need help to identify those families that should also be listed there.  The index is not just confined to the earliest Pioneers but includes subsequent settlers as well.

If any of the families to which you refer should be included please let me know.  It would be wonderful if we could have at least one contributor contact on each index page, the more the better.  If there are errors and you can help us to correct same we would be very grateful.

Finally, if you can help me to specifically identify the start ancestor of the families you mention I will be able to more clearly determine if we have received a specific contribution or whether the information has come in whole or in part as part of some other family submission.  Quite often, we receive bits of families and have been able to make connections to create "more" complete families.

As you probably already know, where information and/or images has been received and can be clearly attributed to someone's generosity, we do so.

I do hope you will help us to rectify the errors you have detected.

Best regards, Ian Harvey

Subject: Monaro Pioneers - Info on James Wilton

Hi,

Under the pioneer ‘Duncan Davidson’, there is some information about his daughter Margaret Webster Davidson (and her husband James Wilton). It says that they had a hotel at Captains Flat. I’ve been researching James Wilton and have found out that he owned the Pioneer hotel in Forbes (1861 – 1862). He also owned the Harrow Inn near Goulburn (1865 – 1869). He moved to Bemboka in 1869 where he became a farmer. I can’t seem to find any evidence that he owned a hotel in Captains Flat. Is there any evidence regarding the Captains Flat hotel?

Thanks, Terry Smith

Maybe there was a misunderstanding between Lambing FLAT and Captains FLAT???

Hi Ian
Firstly I would like to express my gratitude for all the work put into the website.  As a lover of Australian history and sharing with my now extremely large family the knowledge of what our beautiful, dedicated, hardworking ancestors have done to help make this country what it is today.

This is the printout for Carberry family.  I have high lighted in red the 2 soldiers William Blunt and Vincent Walden for Byrne/Carberry family.  Ernest McCarthy is in Blue for the McCarthy family.  I have high lighted in red the  the 2 sisters Ada Eileen wife of Ernest and Muriel May Blunt Walden my grandmother and mother of Stanislaus and Vincent (great granddaughters of Rosehanna Byrne and granddaughters for Sus Carberry.

My father is in green as he has married into the Kiss/Mckee family but is also Great great grandson of Rosehanna Byrne/Carberry Great grandson of Susannah Carberry, Reid, Collingwood.

This family is confusing and now getting bigger.

When we attended the funeral last year of Lillian who died at 103 years and 10 months it was  amazing to see all the families come out of the woodworks but it was also gratifying to see how much they loved her and held her such esteemed.  I know they all knew there was no monies or material goods to be had my anyone of us.

2nd February 2010.

Hi Ian,

My name is Janette Yvonne Simpson. My maiden name was Morrison. I am a descendant of Isabella Inglis and Thomas Baird who came out on the Samuel Plimsol from England. My grandfather was Alexander Thomas Baird Morrison Janie Morrison's son.

According to your history Alex  and Elsie only had one son Harry Creswell Morrison. That is incorrect as they also had Jeffrey Alexander Morrison who was born on 20th September 1914. He was my father. He disappeared in 1945 at the end of the war and the search such as it was by all concerned never revealed his whereabouts. I would like outr family history to be included in your site. I can provide names links and dates. How do I go about this. Please email me on (removed by Editor) I use my other grandfathers name as my email address.

Please reply. Kind Regards, Janette Simpson nee Morrison.

Hi Janette,

We would be delighted to add your family information to our site,  just send me the details and I will add it to the database and website.  Your father is not on our records purely because we have not received his information yet. Now we can rectify that situation.

Hi Ian ,

Here is our family history that needs to be inserted into the Eden Monaro pages. It fits  into  the Morrison history from section Isabella Inglis / Janie Baird /Alexander Thomas Baird Morrison . I will start at Alexander Thomas Baird Morrison as there is one correction here as to the place that he died.

Alexander Thomas Baird Morrison was born in 1883 Bombala and died 23/10/1962 at Lealholme Private Hospital Ashfield aged 78 . He was cremated and placed in Rookwood Cemetry in Sydney. He had worked  on farms in the area of Delegate.

Alexander married Elsie Cowell daughter of William Holland and Mary Jane Cowell  on 20th December  1906 in Bombala NSW . Elsie was born in 1889 in Queanbeyan. She died on December 2nd 1942 Delegate NSW at the age of 53 and was buried in Delegate Cemetery NSW Grave 336 . They had two children.

M 1. Harry Creswell Morrison was born in 1907 in Craigie near Bombala  NSW  . He died on October 10 1937 in Goulburn NSW at age 30 and was buried on Oct 11 1937 in the Catholic Cemetry Kenmore NSW.

Harry married his 2nd cousin Margaret Bell Mudie daughter of Robert Coulson Maudie and Annie Elizabeth Morrison on May 27th 1931 at St Marys Church Bombala NSW. Margaret was born on October 27th 1909 in DelegateNSW. She died on September 15th 1956 in Yallourn Vic at age 46 and was buried on September 18th 1956 in the Catholic Cemetery Delegate NSW. They had no children

M 2.  Jeffrey Alexander Morrison was born on 20th September 1914 in Delegate. Jeffrey married Elsie Clarice Kent daughter of William James Kent and Janet Adeline Patterson of Harden Murrumburrah. They married at the Presbyterian Church Bridge Road Glebe on the 22nd December 1936. Jeffrey was a fitter and turner and Elsie was a teacher.Elsie was born on 10th July 1914 at Mt Dillion in the Harden Murrumburrah district. Her father was a farmer. Elsie died in  October 1998 in the Port Macquarie Private Hospital at Port Macquarie. She is buried  at Innes Gardens Memorial Park Port Macquarie grave no B1131. She had a long distinguished career in teaching, travelled widely, excelled in dressmaking, knitting , gardening, pottery, cooking , and knitting . Jeffrey went to Sydney to work in Munitions during the war and at Water Supply Depot at Camperdown . He left there in October 1943. . Elsie stayed in Goulburn.

The last time she heard from him was Christmas 1942 when he was living at 270 Bridge Rd Forest Lodge in the Glebe area of Sydney. The last time he ever was on an electoral roll was at this address in 1944. Elsie divorced Jeffrey naming an Edith Margaret Hyde as a person he had lived with for many months.Since neither party could be found  by her parents or his parent the divorced was confined to desertion without just cause or excuse for 3 years and upwards.Jeffrey only saw his daughter Janette once in the first year she was born. Janette Yvonne Morrison. She married Malcolm Kethel Simpson 1965 at Bankstown. They had two children and  are now divorced. email bill.kent@bigpond.com.au  with any information  or photos re Jeffrey Alexander Morrison.

Ian a few dates and second names are missing. Since I cannot reach anyone at present I will email them for inclusion later. I put in the additional information about Jeffery and Elsie since someone reading it may throw some light on what story did eventuate for Jeffrey. There may be step sisters and brothers who knows. It would be good even to know a little . Or if there were some old photos. I have 4 photos of my father way back when he was in his 20s. Whatever the story it cannot hurt anyone now since they are all deceased most probably. Wonder if I could leave my email in my section?

Kind Regards, Janette Simpson nee Morrison.

Subject: Greer - Sorrell connection in database

Good morning Ian.

Firstly, thank you so much for your great work with the Monaro Poineers site.

The reason for this email is because I can expand a little on one of the families listed in the database, which will in turn provide a link to another.

I was reminded of this fact by an entry in the January 2010 Newsletter from David Greer (who is in fact a relation of mine it seems).

Under the family of Thomas Greer, his grandson Lawrence James Greer married Millie Eileen. Her real name was Amelia (Millie) Eileen Hall.

Amelia (Millie) Eileen Hall was a daughter of the Amelia E Bean you have listed as a granddaughter of James Sorrell in the database.

Please find below some extra information on Amelia E Bean which will provide the link between the Greer and Sorrell families.

Amelia (Millie) Elizabeth Bean was born in 1895 at Cootamundra, NSW. She was married in 1912 to George Frederick Hall at Queanbeyan, NSW. She died on 18 July 1976, in Queanbeyan NSW, and was buried on 20 July 1976 at the Queanbeyan Lawn Cemetery (Section F, Row B, Lot 19). Her husband, George Frederick Hall (Snr) died in Canberra, ACT on 13 May 1947, aged 63. He was buried in the C of E Section, Riverside Cemetery, Queanbeyan, NSW.

George and Amelia Hall (nee Bean) had the following children:

Lila Isabel Hall - Born:                3 March1913 in Queanbeyan, NSW; Died: 20 January 2008, Queanbeyan NSW

Lorna Hall - Born:             @1915

Mabel Florence Hall - Born:                   1918 in Queanbeyan, NSW; Died: 19 January 1967 in Queanbeyan, NSW. Aged 48
Edna Marie Hall - Born:               @ 1921; Died:                   19 May 1981, Queanbeyan

Amelia (Millie) Eileen Hall - Born:          2 April 1924; Died:             29 March 1987 in Queanbeyan

George Frederick Hall Born:               16 August 1925 in Queanbeyan, NSW; Died:                  25 June 1967 in Sydney, NSW. Aged 41

Nora Benita Hall - Born:              @ 1928

I have also noticed a Roland Cecil Bean listed as a son of Amelia Sorrell and Albert Arthur Bean in the database. That is incorrect. I have a copy of Amelia Sorrell's death certificate and it lists only 5 children, none with the name of Roland Cecil. Also, the BDM database states his age at death in 1969 as 55 years, which means he was born circa 1914, 3 years after Amelia died in 1911.

Thank you, Lyn de Klerk (nee Bean)

P.S. In case you were wondering about the family link between David Greer and myself, it is that his grandmother, Amelia Elizabeth Bean, is a sister of my great-grandfather, Augustus Charles Bean.

Hi Lyn,

Thank you for the information.

Regards, Ian

Subject: Volunteers for WW2 Project

Dear Ian

Received the newsletter and I would like to volunteer for the WW2 Project-  Bega, Eden , Moruya,  Queanbeyan and Tumut area. I have recently retired and have been able to do more family research, as luck would happen it was only two days ago I visited the NAA website for info on a WW2  person- but it said “not yet examined”

My family were mainly in the Bombala area however some went to Bega and another side of the family were in the Queanbeyan area.

Could you please let me know how I can made a contribution to the project

Thanks, Graham Campbell

Hi Graham,

Thank you for the generous offer of assistance, we welcome your involvement. Firstly, do you have any Genealogy software to use?  This is vital to the easy entry and management of the information.

The process of the task is identify all those individuals who were either born and/or enlisted in the towns and villages in the areas in question.  Starting with say Eden (but you can choose where you want to start) and its surrounding district, you will need to be become familiar with all the major and minor place names in that locale.  Having made a list of all the place names, you then need to search the WW2 Nominal roll on the War Memorial Site by place to obtain a list of all enlistees.

Each individual in that list then needs to entered into your Genealogy Software with his details and Military Service as an "event".  Each place searched being a separate database in your software with all relevant individuals located therein.  Where a person has died on active service, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site needs to be searched to establish burial location for inclusion as well.

When all the individuals for that place have been entered, the database for that place is then exported to a gedcom file and sent to me for merging into the MP Database.  Then you move onto the next place and so on.

The specifics for the format of the data entry we can discuss when your ready. How does that sound? If you would like to talk about the process, my phone number is (removed by Editor)

Regards, Ian

Subject: re Roger Sheehy

Dear Ian,

Roger Sheehy

Descendants of Roger Sheehy
Compiled from the new Monaro Pioneers database:  17.10.07
with additional information supplied by:
Joan Jerzyna [fhjoan-at-bigpond.com] 12.04.08
Mary Nicholls [nicholls-at-activ8.net.au]  13.11.08

Some time ago I received an email telling me that some of the information contained in the above site was incorrect.  I have only just now had the time to check this out, and  I have spent a few days looking at the Monaro Pioneer website.  As a result there have been a number of additions, corrections and alterations.

All additions, and/or alteration to dates have been taken from actual Certificates obtained; or, after sighting of Church Registers at the National Library in Canberra.

Trying to help you with all of these amendments I started with a copy of the Roger Sheehy data obtained from the Monaro Pioneers website.

The key to these amendments is --

1.  Minor adjustments have been made and are highlighted by being typed in a larger font and surrounded by a box; and,

2.  On Page Nos. 3, 6, 7, 13, 14, 16 - all info surrounded by a box and coloured “green” are to be removed completely.

Roger Charles SHEEHY -- born 1855.

All information previously shown re Marriage and Children has been deleted.  That information is pertinent to Roger Charles SHEEHY, son of John Sheehy and Catherine Brown.  John Sheehy was a brother to Roger Sheehy.

I have liaised with Mary Nicholls on this and trust that you will ultimately be able to make the necessary alterations on the website. Please contact me if you have any questions about all this. Thanking you for your excellent work

Sincerely, Joan Jerzyna

Hi Joan,

Thank you for the information, I have updated our records and hopefully the website is now correct.

Regards, Ian

Hi David,

I just read the enquiry below and most probably I will be able to assist as our Society does have the Pambula Voice on microfilm.  Would you please be able to forward me their email address so that I can make contact.  By the way, for your information there is no Pambula Historical Society - we are Bega Valley Genealogy Society and we are based at the Old Courthouse and Police Station in Pambula. We do research for people from Tilba to the Victorian Border and up on the Monaro.

Subject: CASH Family, Eden.

Hi Ian

I'm Barry Cash from New Zealand. Found the 'Monaro' web site and wondering if you can help. I'm looking for info on Joseph and Jane Cash, residents of Eden, c.1872. I have info on their 9 children. What I'm looking for is newspaper clips about the family from the Pambula Voice which I cant access from here. Joseph was born in Suffolk, 1829, and joined the 43rd [Monmouthshire] Regiment of Foot age 17/18 and served in Ireland, South Africa, India, and New Zealand, where he was discharged and lived for about 3 years before moving to Pambula, and then Eden where he married Jane in 1872. He died 1911. One of their children, Arthur, came to NZ and started my branch of the CASH tree. Can you can help, or pass me to some else?

Regards, Barry

Hi Barry,

Sorry but we have no transcription details of the Pambula Voice newspaper unfortunately.  You could try the Pambula Historical Society or the Bega Valley equivalent. You mention 9 children, we only have details of 8, perhaps you might like to fill in the blanks in our database?

Regards, Ian

Subject: Cotterill/Groves/Helmers family history

My name is Richard Bradley and I am a  direct descendant of the Cotterill line and also the Helmers line.  My grandmother was Ethel May Constance Groves (nee Cotterill) whose father was Charles Oliver Cotterill son of Thomas Oliver Cotterill.  and Sophia Cotterill (Banks)  Iam  heading to Bombala on Thursday 28/1/2010 to do some research.  I believe Sophia  Cotterill was the niece of Sir Joseph Banks, botanist with Captain Cook.. I would like to know how to research the Banks side of the family in UK and know  if Sophia was related  to Sir Joseph Banks.  Could you please  add my name to your newsletter as I am very interested in all of this.

Thanking you, Richard  Bradley

Hi Richard,

We have no information that links Sophia Ban ks with Sir Joseph Banks.  That only means our information on Sophia includes her mother and father's names but no details nor ancestors and siblings.

Good luck with your search.

Regards, Ian
