Subject: Plumb family

I see on your site that you have a few of my Plumb relations from your area. I have a correction for one such family if I may.

Charles Plumb born 26 April 1868 in Penrith NSW to parents John Plumb and Lydia Howlett-Plumb is not the one who married Hannah Churchill. This Charles Plumb(middle name William) married Agnes Engelman in 1894 in Bega,NSW .

Charles Plumb born 1866 in Cambridgeshire,UK to parents Charles Plumb and Emma Mansfield is the one who married Hannah Churchill. He arrived in Australia 1885 on "Lady Octavia" as a cabin boy aged 19. He gave his name as James but this was his middle name.

I have more on both these families and heaps more on other Plumb families as my paternal grandmother was a Plumb and was related to all of these I have mentioned.

Thanks for your time, Vickie Shears

Hi Vickie,

Thanks for letting us know. We would be very grateful for any additional information you could provide.

Subject: George DeCosta

Hello Ian,

Merry Christmas and I hope 2010 is a peaceful and prosperous year for you and your family.

Over the past few months, I have had cause to reflect on the life of my great-great-great Grandfather, especially with the passing in August 2009 of my Grandfather (who was George’s Great-Grandson), James Cornelius Casey, 3rd child of Elvira Elizabeth DeCosta.

Earlier today one of my relatives forwarded me a copy of the birth certificate of George’s youngest son Henry Custody DeCosta. This certificate shows George as the informant of the birth (which suggests his English skills would have been reasonable), it also gives a clue as to the thickness of his accent (even after some 12 years in New South Wales), his wife Elizabeth’s surname at marriage “Cain” is recorded by the registrar of the birth of their youngest son as “Hand”. It also lists her birthplace as “ Manly Beach , Sydney NSW” – whereas the Monaro Pioneers site has her as being born in Canbury NSW. (Not sure how I check this one?).

I also had the opportunity to visit Bombala and surrounds in September, to get a feel for the sort of life George would have lived. Must say, I was struck by the beauty and tranquility of the area….and can see why George DeCosta, like so many others from across the seas, was happy to call this region home.

Attached to this email is a photograph of Henry Custody DeCosta’s widow, Grace (daughter of George Graham Campbell & Frances Ann Chapman) tending her father’s grave in Newcastle NSW.

Regards, Aydan Casey

Hi Aydan,

Thanks for the photo, now viewable on the De Costa and Campbell web pages. Happy new year to you and your family as well.

Dear Sir,

What a lot of great information I discovered today.  A lot of course I have known as I am a descendant of Mary A. Webb.

My grandfather Ernest Walter Glasses' information is not quite right.  He married Ellen Miller in 1911 and after she got ill and died he went overseas with the army where he met Leonce Marie Belle. After being discharged he went back to France and brought her back to Australia and married her in 1920. I believe he was born in Nambugga, near Bega, and that is where they lived for some time.

(It is the wrong way round in your article)  You haven't mentioned Walter and Leonce's living children.I don't know if you care to.  These things could go on forever.

Cheers, Beverley Jones (nee Glass)

Hi Beverley,

Thanks for the information, Walter's given names are shown as Walter Henry on the BDM indexes and his Enlistment papers, is Ernest the name he preferred?  As to his "missing" children, we do not have any information on them as yet.

Regards, Ian

Dear Ian,

I confused you, my father's name was Ernest Walter Henri Glass. Leonce and Walter had 6 living children

Ernest Walter Henri   Born 4th April 1921

Phyllis Marie             Born 11th December 1923

Richard George         Born 22nd April 1925

Donald Roy               Born 16th October 1927

Vera                         Born 25th June 1930

Thanks

Hi – I was part of the group which regularly used the red shack (known as the Poachers Hut) which stood adjacent to Pollock’s Creek. It was destroyed by KNP in 1971. I have written a number of books on flyfishing and would like to use some historical data in a new book under way in which a chapter is devoted to the “Red Shack days”. I seek your approval & details of compliance.

Cheers & hope to hear from you. Les Hawkins

Hi Les,

You have our permission to use information from our site for your book.  All we ask is you make reference to our site as the information source.

Subject: James Mealing b 1805 Wandsworth

Hello team

I just noticed that James Mealing (born abt 1805 in Wandsworth, Surrey England) and his descendents have appeared on the Monaro Pioneers site, with his parents shown as William Mealing (1780-1849) and Charlotte Mealing (1786-1848).  Your details of James & family on the site are remarkably identical to those on my Ancestry.com tree, which makes me suspect that they've been merged from my data!  Which is great, it's how we all get much of our data (after cross-checking of course).

In fact William and Charlotte Mealing were my gggg-grandparents, I'm descended from their son Thomas born about 1811, which is why as a new migrant (1970) I also have an interest in the Bombala Mealings.  I would be very interested to know if you have other corroborating data about the origins of these pioneers, as unfortunately my data on William and Charlotte's early life is very scant. They may have had an older son, another William Mealing born around 1800-1804, who also took the trip to Australia but in 1830 and not of his own choosing (he was convicted of Larceny after a bungled attempt to steal the silverware of a lady in Hanover Square on Christmas Eve 1829).

I would be very happy to submit any further information to the Monaro Pioneers project - I do have some data on the death of James' son William - his death in 1913 in Victoria was due to "exposure" and was the subject of a coronial enquiry.  These Mealings were true pioneers, having chosen to leave London for an unknown life in Australia, and raising their city-born boys to be stockmen at Kameruka.

Regards, Alan Mealing

Hi Alan,

Thank you for the information, I have added James Mealing to our Pioneers Index with a full descendants report which shows all the information we have on this family.  I did some further checking and the immigration records show James' mother's name was Ann. We would be very grateful for any further information you can contribute.

Subject: RE: Descendants of Thomas Underhill / James Rixon

Hello

I stumbled onto the Monaro Pioneers page by accident when researching some information on my late great-aunt and uncle (Edna Irvin & Roy Honeyman), when I found:

37. Ivy Edna Rixon (Elizabeth Anne Underhill2, Jane1) was born on August 6, 1892 in Bega, NSW170 and died in 1944 in Marrickville, NSW171 at age 52. Ivy married John William H. Irvin, son of Foster Irvin and Margaret Ann Cochrane, in 1916 in Bega, NSW.367 John was born in 1890 in Bombala, NSW368 and died in 1964 in Rockdale, NSW369 at age 74.

   F    i. Edna A. Irvin .

   F    ii. Edna Ann Irvin

Edna married Arthur Roy Honeyman.

   F    iii. Margaret Irvin .

Margaret married Thomas Alexander Muir.

(http://www.monaropioneers.com/Underhill-t.htm#Genealogy.... Also found at #112 - http://www.monaropioneers.com/rixon-j.htm#i11975 )

The most interesting thing (to me) is that this information doesn’t appear complete…  I am actually the granddaughter of Joan Irvin (b. 1921), youngest sister of Edna Ann and Margaret. The listing on the webpage has 2 Edna Irvin’s… no-one in the family is aware of more than the one, so believe that one of these may be incorrect.

Joan married George Henry ‘Harry’ Young and had two daughters, Margaret Anne (b. 1945) and Alison Ivy (b. 1952)… I, Ciel Jane (b. 1983, to Alison), am Joan’s only grandchild. Edna and Roy (both deceased) had a daughter, Valerie – who has 3 adopted children: Leanne (now Adrianne), Janine and Anthony. Margaret ‘Molly’ and Tom (both deceased) had a biological son, Brian, who in-turn has 2 children: Jane and George.

As you can see… there is a lot of name sharing in the family!

I don’t know what you would do with this information, if you are the correct person to contact, or if it is wholly important to you – however I found it wonderful to find some of my history in this document, and would at least like someone to know more complete and accurate detail.

Regards, Ciel

Hi Ciel,

Thank you for the information, our records have been updated.

Hello David

Thanks for the latest updates. I found the information very helpful. I still owe you the James Thomas family details and these will be sent in early Feb 2010.

I noted in the list of children for Sarah Ann Dunn listed in the “William Dunn” file. There were a few more children that have been overlooked and they will all be in the Thomas family details for you.

I remain very interested in the history of the village of Lobbs Hole (Ravine). I have been compiling fragments over the years since my mother told me about her childhood there. Next year I hope to put in a more serious effort and collate what I have and then seek input from others who may also have some information they may wish to share to ensure this little piece of our history is not lost forever. I think there is a story to be told about this little settlement, and the families that lived and worked there, that has not yet been covered.

Merry Xmas to you all

Subject: additions to Bray/Grant family tree

Hello Ian,

I would like to add additional information in relation to my great grandparents, Daniel Clarence Bray and Esther Ann Grant.

Daniel was born 17 January 1886, the second son to Thomas Bray and Johanna O’Mara. Unsure where Daniel was born, I can only assume he may have been born in Rocky Hall as that is where the family homestead was until it burn’t down earlier last century. All of Daniel’s siblings births are registered in Eden and Bega, but for some reason Daniel’s birth was never registered as I have not been able to locate it. Daniel died in his home at Rocky Hall, 9 December 1978 (Reg: Eden NSW # 200051) and is buried in the Catholic Portion, Bega Cemetery.

I have noticed that there is a limited amount of information about Esther Ann Grant, daughter of John Henry Grant (AKA Possum Jack) and Maria Love. Esther was born 1877, Eden NSW # 11422, and died 19 August 1968, Bega #37271. She is buried in the Wyndham Cemetery. Esther was married twice before marrying Daniel, they are as follows:-

1st Marriage: to Albert Ernest Henwood, son to Samuel Henry Henwood and Harriet, in 1901, Scone NSW # 4922. Albert was born in 1872, Scone NSW # 17316, and died 1902, Scone NSW # 3097. There were no children to this union. NB: Esther was married in the name of Ethel E. Grant.

2nd Marriage: to Linden Stafford Teague, son to Hugh Henwood Teague and Eliza Oliver in 1903, Sydney NSW # 7590. Linden was born 1880, Waterloo NSW # 7234, and died 1938 in Western Australia # 22. NB: Esther was married by the name of Ethel E. Henwood.

There was one child born to this union, Alice Thelma Teague (AKA Thelma), born the 1 December 1903, Sydney # 135. Thelma married Francis Edward Whitby (AKA Ted). I notice that you already have further details on Thelma and Ted in the John Whitby Family Tree so I won’t repeat myself, but just of interest, I was told by my father that their son Norman was killed in 1968 when he was struck by a falling tree while working out the back of Wyndham somewhere.

3rd Marriage: to Daniel Clarence Bray on 27 November 1912, Woollahra NSW #16601. Children to this union are as follows:-

            2. Harold Bray

            3. Darcy Bray (my grandfather) born 23 May 1917. Died  24 October 1995 in his father’s home at Rocky Hall NSW.

Buried  General Section, Bega Cemetery. Darcy married Daphne Robertson, daughter to Randolph Robertson (AKA

Rash)  and  Maria Ethel Sarah Warburton in 1945, Bombala NSW # 7647. Daphne was born 13 November 1920.

Died 15 April 1993, Bega NSW. Buried in the General Section, Bega Cemetery.

I have further information on all of the children to Randolph Robertson (AKA Rash), son to Charles Robertson (John Love Family Tree) and Elizabeth Annie Robinson, and Maria Ethel Sarah Warburton, daughter to William Thomas Warburton (Thomas William Warburton Family Tree) and Emma Jane Hamble.

1.       Eric Robertson, born 1909, Stroud NSW # 3327.

Charles was born 1900, Eden NSW # 3012. Died 18 July 1989. Late of Pambula.

Just on a different subject. I have been researching my husband’s family tree. They are the Constable family who were a pioneering family in Moruya NSW. Its probably a little bit out of Monaro’s area but it any one reads this message and has any information they would like to share with me, please do by emailing me.

Regards, Cathrine Constable (nee Bray)

Hi Cathrine,

Thank you for the information, I have updated our records.  I am not sure whether you have used our database search facility yet but the family of John Oldfield Constable does exist in our database.  If you have any additional information you could add to the Constable clan we would be very grateful. Our scope of interest does extend well beyond the traditional boundaries of the Monaro. David, could you please add Cathrine's address to your email distribution list.

Hello Ian,

Just especially to wish you and yours a joy filled Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. The web site that you have spent so much time on is a credit to you and a continuing joy to many of us. I was particularly delighted to read in the latest Monaro Newsletter that a Britten descendant, Fiona Hamilton, Granddaughter of Thomas and Ethel has been in touch and enjoyed the photos of her 5 beautiful great Aunts. If it is OK I would love her email address as I would like to contact her.  Meanwhile I will go on enjoying those wonderful old photos.  I love them!! Anyhow keep up the good work.

Love and all best wishes, Barbara Adams

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for the kind words and your continuing support, the site is certainly developing nicely and I expect more developments in the coming year.  I would like to wish you and your family the very best for the festive season. David, would you please satisfy Barbara's request?

Hi Ian

My name is Angus Hobson and I am a grandson of Charles (Tony) and Peg (Valerie) Garnock.  Tony and Peg own ‘Bukalong’, which my parents and I manage on their behalf. Tony has compiled a plethora of information over his years – mainly in regards to ‘Bukalong’ and his Lighthorse interests - and we’d be keen to see this passed onto you, and any others who may be interested and/or benefit.

Kind regards, Angus Hobson

Hi Angus,

We would be delighted to display the information on Bukalong and the "Lighthorse" on our website. Please send the information and/or images to me via email if possible, otherwise I can supply a snail mail address.

Cheers, Sylvia Clissold

Hello again Ian,

Unless I have misunderstood the emails between yourself and John Worthy, (8th August, 2009) I understood that the question was asked about a

James Day 1815.

John Worthy refers to an IGI entry for a James, who apparently died on 30 Jun 1909, buried at the old cemetery in Tumut.

He further explains:  My wife is a direct descendent of Benjamin Day 1860-1939 (age: 79) one of James' 11 children...James Day m. Mary Jane Harmer...parents.

The James Day buried at Tumut, is obviously not the  son of Thomas (ll) and Susannah Stubbs named James Day, was lost at sea on the Schooner "ANN".

You asked in your email to John Worthy, "Were there any other children from Thomas Day (ll)  and Susannah Stubbs".  So I clarified that they had 5 children, Susanna, Thomas, Richard, William, and James.

Thomas John James Day (lll) m. Jane Lockwood....no issue

The shaded information forwarded to you, merely follows the direction to the present generation

Ian, I was wondering if John Worthy may be interested in this information.  If he is prepared to forward his email to me, I may be able to fill in some blanks.

Regards, Sylvia...

Subject: NEWLYN -BERESFORD FAMILY

Hello Ian, my name is Sandra Fishwick from Ballarat, Victoria, I am researching the Newlyn family.  On your site you have a George Newlyn married to Caroline Edith Beresford 1896 the daughter of Joseph Beresford and Julia Dixon this should be Dickson.  This has been verified by the site NLA Australian Newspaper website.  (The Argus 22 August 1860 - Page 4) they were married at her uncle Bassett Dickson J.P. home at Glen Ayr, Tasmania.  The article reads as:

MARRIAGES

On the 24th ult, at Glen Ayr, Tasmania, the residence of the bride's uncle, Bassett Dickson, Esq., J.P., Joseph Beresford, Esq. to Julia, eldest daughter of T.S. Dickson, Esq., of Euroa, Victoria.

I also have information on Charlotte Newlyn (daughter of William Newlyn and Elizabeth Barrett.  Charlotte was born 3rd quarter 1844 Lambeth, Surrey, England and d1912 Ryde, NSW she married John Ellson (not Ellison which is stated on the marriage certificate) 22 Jan 1866 Pambula, NSW, he died 30 Dec 1902 Bega, NSW.  Left issue:

1.  John Ellson b1866 Eden (NSW BDM Index 8279) d1867 (NSW BDM Index 4958) Bega

2.  Emily E. Ellson b1868 Eden (NSW BDM Index 8916) d1889 (NSW BDM Index 5223) Woolahra.

3.  Louis Ellson b1869 Eden (NSW BDM Index 10447), d1949 (NSW BDM Index 20642) Randwick

8.  Lyly Ann V. Ellson b1881 Bega (NSW BDM Index 14811) d1896 Bowral (NSW BDM Index 12955).

I have children to those that married if you are interested.

My relationship to this family is through William Harold Ellson, he is my Great Grandfather. Best wishes for a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the information. I believe Louis (Charles) Ellson married Florence Beatrice Dunn, not Charles Albert Ellson.  Florence Beatrice is listed on the Electoral rolls as living with Louis in 1943 in Randwick which is after the death of Charles Albert (Charles Herbert) in 1937.  Prior to 1943, Louis is listed on the electoral rolls as Charles but living with Florence Beatrice and some of his children..  Why he was called Charles is unclear.

Subject: Power stories

Dear Ian,

I already have sent you a couple of stories: John Power of Wyndham and Michael Power of Kiah. I have updated those stories and also completed another 13 stories of the children of John Power. Prior to sending these 15 stories to you I am about to have photos added to some of them and intended to embed the photos in the text. Is this a satisfactory way of doing things from your end or should I send them independently of the stories?

Also I intended to record them as jpegs but they are large files that would slow the downloading of the stories from the website. Should I include them as some other file or is the changing to a 'web friendly' file something that you do as you load the material?

Finally, I intended posting the stories to you on a DVD or memory stick if the files are too large for email transmission. If so, what is your postal address?

In conclusion I must thank and congratulate you and the other good people involved on the creation and maintenance of this great site. After 40 years of research and writing it is very pleasing for me to be able to make these stories available to any interested people in such a well managed medium.

With best regards, Bryan Power

Hi Bryan,

Thank you for the kind words and offer of further information. I would prefer to receive the photos as separate files with descriptive caption details for each.  Jpeg is fine. Whilst the inclusion of photos in the stories is a great idea and presentation method, it is not really suitable for our project because I include each story into the individual's record within my software and imbedded photos will be automatically removed.  Thus our format is text stories for inclusion in the "notes" fields and photos for inclusion in the "family Photos" section of the web pages we display. Could I suggest you send the information individually, ie the story and photos for each individual as one email to make it easier for me to manage the process?  This should also overcome any email size limitations.  If this still prevents any email from being sent I am happy to provide my snail mail address. There is no simple way for us to be able make the downloading of the various pages quick for all users as we have no control of their access method.  In the case of some of our pages the amount of information and photos is very large and it does take a little time to download but hopefully the rewards when completed are worth the wait. Most often we do make the images smaller in size to fit our display needs thus improving the download speed.

Thank you again for your wonderful contributions and I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.

Regards, Ian

Hello David

I have been lucky enough to be able to find invaluable information about many of my Monaro Pioneers ancestors..from the Hoads through to the Sims/Miles/Freebodys/Gates/Cullens/Eldridges etc and appreciate the amount of time and research which has gone into the site .I would love to offer a donation of cash to help keep the site alive and up to date so please inform me of where I can send/bank a donation?

Merry Christmas, Michelle Ambrosini (nee Hoad)

Thank you very much for your generosity however I understand the Monaro Pioneers Team to be a volunteer group and (I can only speak for myself) whose rewards are getting a great kick out of helping people such as yourself, to find out as much as they can of their ancestors. Our (my) reward is receiving letters such as yours. I have of course copied Ian so he can provide you with the official response but don’t be too surprised if your offer is not taken up. Take care and enjoy a safe and merry Christmas season .

Regards, David Knox

Hi Michelle,

David's summation is correct, our project is entirely voluntary and free.  Pattrick Mould started the project with the philosophy that the information we have should be freely available and owned by no one.  I also subscribe to that view and have continued the development of the site and the database to its present form.  There are some small costs involved but Pattrick and I happily contribute to cover those so that the site remains available for all to use.  We don't ask for nor want any monetary contribution from anyone to maintain the site. As David says, the rewards are the letters and comments from folks like yourself who have gained benefit from the endeavours of all the contributors to our site.  In most cases, including your own, people generously give back additional information to expand and enrich the site when they discover their families in our records.  Thank you for the generous offer, but your contribution of information has already been sufficient to make you part of our large "family".  The fact that you have been able to make all the connections between your various ancestral families is exactly the reason why we have created the database we have and makes the efforts involved worthwhile. I look forward to additional contributions you may make and wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Subject: Info on Stanislaus Thurbon

G'Day Ian,

Would you mind passing this onto Nik A  please.

Dear Nik and Wife,

Re; Monaro Pioneers Newsletter.

I take it that you are talking about my G. Uncle Stan Thurbon, who was indeed a champion boxer in the 1920's. Unfortunatly after being selected to compete in the then Empire Games that were to be held in South Africa, The games were cancelled, not sure why maybe the depression, or political unrest I'm not sure, I  do have some 'photo's and newspaper clippings that I will dig out after Christmas, and post them on the Monaro news letter. Stan Thurbon was my grandfather's younger brother by 20 years. When their father William died,  William had a tooth ache, '' The boys '' took him to the shearing shed and pulled out the offending tooth, William then developed blood poisoning and died the day before Christmas 1913, Stan was only 8 years old. Peter and Margaret Thurbon also very young.  My grandfather also Richard Thurbon helped his mother take care of the younger children. If you look back on the pioneer site you will see a photo of Stan and Richard's mother Maryanne. As Murphy's Law would have it, that was the same  year a lot of the Monaro got flooded out in a big wet. Maryanne's house was either washed away or destroyed, Either way, Michael Galvin jr. Maryanne's cousin left her some money which enabled Maryanne and the younger children to buy a house in Sydney. It was there that Stan and Peter were introduced to boxing by another cousin Kevin Spillane. All three did very well at the sport.

As to Richard Thurbon sr.1817/1881, he did indeed commit suicide, I found the inquest on mirco-fysh. The inquest was by a circuit judge  12/1/81 held in Good Good.

Findings; death by suicide, hanging. value of worth 1,500 pounds. There was a will dated 1879. which left equal shares to his wife and children.  His head stone reads.

Richard Thurbon 1818/1881.  Native of London.  "Go home to your wife and don't cry''   erected by his loving family.

Thanks Ian, and do have a great Christmas and New Year.    Regards Johanna

Subject: FW: William Linger file corrections = 2nd email

Hi Ian

Re my previous email of today’s date, (below) I have just received a transcription of Elizabeth’s death.

Her husband is recorded as Carl Bauer and there were several children. Death nsw bdm 08702/1908  Died 6 Sep 1908, Bega St, Bega age 57, father William Linger Mother Sarah Canney (this is probably Garner),  Buried Wesleyan cemetery, Bega

Children on death certificate: Mary Ann 38 , Emily 37, Julia 35, Alice 34, George 32, Thomas 30-, Henry 28, John 26, Wililam 24, Eva 22, Laurie 14 probably Lawrence, also: 1 male 1 female deceased.

The BDM indexes show Carl and Elizabeth as the parents except for Emily which has George C & Elizabeth.  There is a death registered in Bowral, NSW for Carl Frederick.

I’m inclined to think George Carl not Carl Frederick was Elizabeth Linger’s husband but am only guessing.

Subject: William Linger file corrections

Hi Ian

I don’t like to disparage another’s research, but I think there is an error in the William Linger File. William’s daughter Elizabeth is noted as marrying Carl Frederick Bauer and several children are listed including George Charles.   The NSW BDM marriages indicated  Carl Frederick Bauer married Elizabeth Wheatley 1951/1878 Waterloo District.

George C Bower married Elizabeth Linger  367/1869  Sydney District

I think he may actually be George Carl Bauer who arrived at Two Fold Bay on the “Caesar” from Germany with his parents when he was aged 15.

One child is registered – Emily Bauer to George C & Elizabeth 7107/1871 Bega district   I think Elizabeth died in Bega 1872/1908 and I am following up on this.

Approx 1879 to 1890  children were registered Waterloo District to a  George C Bower and Elizabeth (Ann) but conversations with that family indicate this couple were probably married in Melbourne, of English background, and there is no family history of a connection to Bega.  They are buried in Rookwood cemetery.  -  Perhaps another reader can throw some light on to the matter.   Regards,  Gayle Pedler

Hi Gayle,

I agree with your suggestions and have altered our files accordingly.

Subject: mystery of Richard Stephen Peters Williams, brother of Gertrude Williams Seears, Son of Richard Williams and Amelia Peters.

This gentleman was my maternal grandfather, born 1878 in Bombala.  He died in 1929, when my mother was 6 years old, in Warracknabeal Victoria. She and her mother were told by Richard that he had no siblings, as his only sister Gertie had died as a child.

In fact, we now know that Gertrude and many other siblings were alive at the time that he died. Gertrude was listed as his next of kin in his recruitment papers to the Armed Forces for WW1, and she was contacted on the event of him being medically discharged and returned from overseas service. She later contacted the war office to ask where he was as he had made no contact with her, and she was worried he had died. The army confirmed he had disembarked, and apologised that they could do no more if he chose not to be in contact. He lied about his age when he married (reduced it by 10 years), and it seems no one in Warracknabeal were aware of his early life. Gertrude continued for some years to search for her brother (writing to the Salvation army and the Army on some occasions). We have wondered whether there was local knowledge of some sort of scandal that may have led him to leave and not come back, nor ever make contact with his siblings again. It may be that someone who knew Gertrude and her family might have some knowledge of the story if there is one. I would be very grateful for any information regarding this rather sad story.

Hi Sharelle,

The only information we have on Richard Stephen Peters Williams is his birth and military service. I have found an entry for him in the Electoral rolls for 1914, 1919 and 1924 in Warracknabeal sub district.  We have no other information on him unfortunately.

Perhaps you might care to contribute the details of him and his family?

Regards, Ian
