9. Charles Gordon Walker (Mary Jane Ryan3, Jane McGuigan2, Patrick1) was born on January 11, 1922 in Delegate, NSW and died on June 23, 2003 in Delegate, NSW at age 81.
Notes: Gordon was born at Rose Cottage in Delegate on 11th January 1922. He was the second son of Henry and Mary Walker, brother to Jimmy and Sarah, who both predeceased him, and his surviving sister, Jane.
He attended Delegate Convent School, and in his younger years, played football and cricket for Delegate. He was also a keen golfer for many years.
Gordon joined the army in 1940, shortly before his 18th birthday, and fought in New Britain, Port Moresby and the famous Kokoda Trail in New Guinea.
He married Dawn Armstrong on 2nd March 1943 in Sydney, and the wedding breakfast was held at Nina and Curly Taylor's flat, where they enjoyed steak & kidney pie, sponge cream cake with strawberries, and drank a fair amount of apple cider. So much apple cider, in fact, that the bride preferred to spend their wedding night in her sister's bed, whilst the groom fell asleep next to the best man!
After the war, Gordon returned to Delegate, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was not only an excellent farmer, but was renowned in the district for his outstanding ability at breaking in horses. He also spent many happy times at his hut at Willis, or the "Hotel W illis" as Dawn referred to it, where he caught wild brumbies, which he brought home to break in and sell.
Although a very shy man, Gordon was a great prankster. Many times, when his daughters opened their purses at a ball or the Country Club, they would find all manner of things such as empty bottles, or even spiders. He was always hiding family, or visitors' purses or cigarette packets! Once upon a time, he hid some money of his own and couldn't remember where he put it . He found it, many years later, under the meat block in the dairy. Even this did not teach him a lesson, and the pranks continued. He also had a habit of sneaking up behind people and digging them in the ribs, whooping, and frightening them out of their wits!
Gordon loved a game of cards, especially euchre and John's Game, and he enjoyed watching westerns, particularly the ones starring his very favourite cowboy, John Wayne.
And of course, he found the best way to relax after a hard day's work was to sip on one or two glasses of overproof frigate rum, watered down with a dash of milk.
Gordon had a long and very happy marriage to his beloved wife Dawn, until her sad passing in 1987. He was the proud father of Carol, Carl, Christine, Bill and Cary. Sadly, Bill only lived for a few hours, and Carl passed away tragically in 1959 at the tender age of seven years .
After Dawn's passing, Gordon led a quiet life, continuing to work his farm right to the end . He passed away quietly at home, shortly after completing some farm tasks, and all those who knew and loved him know it was exactly the way he would have wanted to pass from this earthly life. His family are happy to know he is reunited with other loved ones in Heaven.
He will live on forever in the memories of all those who loved him, including his children, Carol, Christine and Cary, daughter-in-law Evelyn, his seven grandchildren - John, Carl, Stephen, Kelly, Tracey, Adam and Jucinda, - and his two great grandaugthers, Teagan and Lilee. He will also be sadly missed by his sister Jane, brother-in-law Murray, and his many nieces and nephews.
As a member of this community for over 81 years, Gordon will also be missed by everyone in this small, tightknit community.
