1. Edward Joyce, son of John Joyce and Cecilia, was born in 1804, died on April 21, 1906 in Cooma, NSW1 at age 102, and was buried in Rose Valley Cemetery, NSW.
Notes: The story so far goes that the Joyce's came from county Clare, Edward ran away from Ireland as a boy of 10/12 by stowing away on a ship bound for Australia on which his older brother James 12/14 had a job as cabin boy. Edward survived the trip by James sharing his food ration with him. When the ship docked possibly Melbourne, the boys where penniless and lived by the luck of the Irish until they found their way to North Eastern Victoria. Here they found work as Shepherd boys, Taking it in turns to sleep while the other tendered the flock at night. Some time later James who was something of a writer, gained a position writing in Melbourne. Edward then found his way up to Rose Valley.

Stories my G. Gran told me
I didn't know it was possible to get that excited over a 100 odd year old grave when I received the photos of Edward Joyce's along with the Galvin and Brodie graves. Then you added Edward's death at 102, it means that at least some of Maryanne's story that she told to me is true. I had written to the Cooma Historical Society a few years ago, regarding Edward, but no luck. Now he has turned up, literally. I have on and off tried finding some more clues about The Joyces. Bit hard with no written records. However I have come to the conclusion that Maryanne's story is basically true, allbit with some large holes. It seems likely that Edward did stow away, seeing how I can't find any shipping records anywhere. Add to that I can't find any for Michael Galvin [ the right Michael Galvin ] either. There is plenty of bits and pieces showing that Bridget and the children were in South Australia for some years before they arrived at Rose Valley. Indeed some of the nine children lived out their lives in S.A. Leads me to think that the two ''boys'' in the story were Edward Joyce and Michael Galvin. The James in the story is James Galvin not James Joyce. Edward could not read or write, so it is hard to believe that he could have a brother ''that was a bit of a writer''. We know that Michael Galvin was educated, so it follows his children would be literate. They landed in Adelaide, not Melbourne. Then they sarted their journey going in a north eastley direction, they did work as sherpards for periods of time. I have found some records that show they worked on a property around Hamilton S.W. Victoria. Edward Joyce married Ellen Galvin 1856. rego no. / 1856/ 1494.Vic.
Baby Edward born 1857 rego no 18179. Vic. Edward Joyce died aged 5 weeks. 1857 Father Edward Joyce, Mother Ellen. rego no 3401/1857 Vic. Then it seems they moved a bit further up around Bendigo way, worked their for awhile. Before finally settling on the Monaro, at Rose Valley.
