HYAM MOSEL JOSEPH, JP
of Maharatta, is the eldest son of Moses Joseph of London and Sydney and was born in Sydney in 1835. He received his education partly in the Sydney College and partly at Goulburn, under the Rev, Dr. Woodwood and Mr Patterson respectively. Visiting England he intended to study for the medical profession but necessity compelled him to forego his aspirations, and to return at the age of twenty one years to Sydney to take charge of his father's business. Shortly afterwards he went into business on his own account as an importer and general merchant. Four years later he went to New Zealand, and in 1860 returned to NSW and in conjunction with his father purchased the Maharatta station , at Monaro from Messrs, Throsby and Hebden. This estate comprising 70,000 acres, includes Crown lands, and raises cattle and sheep. It gives employment to forty three men and their families, and is noted for its short horned cattle and blood stock. Mr. Joseph sold a heifer from one of his cows, which has since bought the large offer of 2000 guineas. The station is famed for its cheese, of which large quantities are daily sent out of the district to Sydney and other metropolitan markets. Mr Joseph is a JP of NSW and of Victoria. He is Chairman and treasurer of the local stock board, acting PM of Bombala, chairman of the Licensing Board, quardian of minors, chairman of the School Board, vice-president of the Agricultural Societ, president of the Jockey and Athletic Clubs and chairman of the Hospital Committee etc.
