First Generation


1. Emanuel Jonas, son of Moses Jonas and Myriam, was born in 1832, died on November 18, 1901 in Bombala, NSW1 at age 69, and was buried in Bombala Cemetery, NSW Grave 806.

Notes: The Bombala Herald was set up in opposition to the Bombala Times in 1872. Edited, printed and published by Emanual Jonas.
Emanuel Jonas had come to the district as manager of Maharatta for H.M. Joseph, and was well respected as a stud master. After his retirement the Bombala Herald was taken over by his son P.J. Jonas who "conducted a successful auctioneering and stock agency business as well".

Emanuel married Esther Frankil, daughter of Jacob Frankil and Sarah, in 1860 in Sydney, NSW.2 Esther died in 1907 in Bombala, NSW.3

Children from this marriage were:

   F    i. Sarah Miriam Jonas was born in 1861 in Bombala, NSW4 and died in 1942 in Woollahra, NSW5 at age 81.

   F    ii. Amelia C. Jonas was born in 1862 in Bombala, NSW.6

Amelia married Stephen H. Butts in 1909 in Kempsey, NSW.7

   2 M    iii. Herbert Emanuel Jonas was born in 1864 in Bombala, NSW8 and died in 1945 in Redfern, NSW9 at age 81.

   M    iv. Alfred Hyam Jonas was born in 1865 in Bombala, NSW10 and died in 1946 in Waverley, NSW11 at age 81.

Alfred married Mary Ann Lord, daughter of James Lord and Elizabeth Magdalene, in 1909 in Sydney, NSW.12 Mary died in 1936 in Waverley, NSW.13

   M    v. Arthur H. Jonas was born in 1866 in Bombala, NSW.14

   F    vi. Sophia Jonas was born in 1868 in Bombala, NSW15 and died in 1868 in Bombala, NSW.16

   3 M    vii. Sydney L. Jonas was born in 1869 in Bombala, NSW.17

   M    viii. Frank D. Jonas was born in 1872 in Bombala, NSW.18

   4 M    ix. Percy John Jonas was born in 1874 in Bombala, NSW19 and died in 1973 in Eden, NSW20 at age 99.

   M    x. Septimus Jonas died in 1951 in Burwood, NSW.21

Septimus married Irene Elizabeth Lane in 1904 in Sydney, NSW.22 Irene was born in 1881 and died in 1964 in Willoughby, NSW23 at age 83.

Second Generation


2. Herbert Emanuel Jonas (Emanuel1) was born in 1864 in Bombala, NSW8 and died in 1945 in Redfern, NSW9 at age 81.

Herbert married Elizabeth Sarah Joseph, daughter of Hyam Moses Joseph and Rachel Moses, circa 1900. Elizabeth was born in 1864 in Bombala, NSW24 and died on July 26, 1958 in Bondi Junction, NSW at age 94.

Children from this marriage were:

   M    i. Hyam Emanuel Jonas was born in 1900 in Broken Hill, NSW25 and died on June 9, 1972 in Bondi Junction, NSW26 at age 72.

• Religion: Jewish.

• Occupation: Student.

• He served in the military as a Private, number 60466, 2nd Battalion, 1st AIF from May 17, 1918 to 1920 in WW1. Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A41 Bakara on 4 September 1918.

Hyam married Rebecca Jonas in 1923 in Sydney, NSW.27 Rebecca died on September 2, 1986.

   M    ii. Arthur Edward Louis Jonas was born in 1904 in Candelo, NSW28 and died in 1952 in Bondi, NSW29 at age 48.

Arthur married Marie Matilda Wooster, daughter of Edward Hawley Wooster and Constance Ivy Smith, in 1928 in Waverley, NSW.30 Marie was born on August 3, 1911 in Moss Vale, NSW and died on August 17, 1982 at age 71.

   F    iii. Julia Rebecca Jonas was born in 1906 in Candelo, NSW.31

3. Sydney L. Jonas (Emanuel1) was born in 1869 in Bombala, NSW.17

Sydney married Mary Emily Davies, daughter of Albert Henry Davies and Janie Campbell, in 1901 in Orange, NSW.32 Mary died in 1957 in Katoomba, NSW.33

The child from this marriage was:

   M    i. Emanuel G. Jonas was born in 1902 in Orange, NSW.34

4. Percy John Jonas (Emanuel1) was born in 1874 in Bombala, NSW19 and died in 1973 in Eden, NSW20 at age 99.

Percy married Elsie Elizabeth McKeachie, daughter of David McKeachie and Catherine Anne Rowley, in 1906 in Sydney, NSW.35 Elsie was born on November 16, 1886 in Bombala, NSW36 and died on September 4, 1908 in Bombala, NSW37 at age 21.

The child from this marriage was:

   M    i. Percy John Jonas was born on February 17, 1908 in Bombala, NSW38 and died in 1956 in Sydney, NSW39 at age 48.

• He served in the military as a Private, number NX60216, 9 R R BTN, Australian Army from July 11, 1940 to July 15, 1940 in WW2.

Percy married Daphne Tyrrell Watling, daughter of William Henry Watling and Ida Jane Higgins, in 1938 in Bega, NSW.40 Daphne was born on October 20, 1910 in Bega, NSW.41

Percy next married Eileen Balfour Scandrett in 1917 in Sydney, NSW.42
