EDMUND JOSEPH COMAN,
is the second son of William Coman of Eurobodalla but formerly of Bumbo station and was born in 1845. He received his education at the RC denominational school, Moruya, and at the hands of private tutors. On the completion of his studies he engaged in station life and in 1861 when gold was discovered at the Gulph, marked the track for the diggers. He it was who led the police against the Clarke Gang of bushrangers with the result that the leader was captured and executed. In 1872 he opened up in conjuntion with his brothers, the Bumbo Reefs, which had to be abandoned. In company with his eldest borther and brother in law he left Moruya in 1875 and explored the country to the west of the Diamantina River. Here he took up the Wyroo station, and returned to NSW to make arrangements for stocking the property. Returning with his younger brother to Queensland, he passed through many adventures of peril, and took from Avington, on the Barcoo, 800 breeding cattle to Wyroo. On this journey our subject was struck down with a malignant fever, which his vigorous constitution successfully combated. Having sold the Wyree station and stock, he penetrated further west, crossed the Herbert and travelling thence north- east, and afterwards W.S.W reached a beautiful sheet of water - which had been first seen by our subjects younger brother covered with wild fowl and measuring in coast line a distance of about 80 miles. This was named Philipi in honour of the discoverer. Other places were afterwards reached and points of interest named but no country found so rich as that surrounding the Philipi Lake. Deciding to make this a cattle station the party returned to the place where the cattle had been left and Mr. Coman was chosen to ride to the nearest Lands office to make the necessary declarations and applications, while the remaining members of the party proceeded with the cattle to Sandringham station 50 miles west of Philipi on the banks of a river they named the Silvester, but which is now known as the Mulligan. Here huts were erected and yards formed. Further explorations were made, but the country proving inhospitable
the party went east, struck the Herbert and returned home. Mr. Coman then sold his stations and opened a store in Candelo, which not proving congenial to his tastes, he sold and after some various experiences re engaged himself in the mining industries of Moruya. Mr. Coman was created a JP in 1883 and since filled the position of Acting Police Magistrate of Moruya.

JOHN COMAN
of Wongaruka, is the third son of William Coman of Eurobodalla, and was born in Condom Moruya, in 1849. Educated in his native town he afterwards entered the employ of his father, whom he assisted in the management and working of a farm. In 1870 he selected a piece of land, on which is erected his present homestead,"Wongaruka" This estate comprises 800 acres. In 1873 Mr. Coman discovered the Bumbo reef, which for two years he worked with profit. He proceeded to Queensland, where, in conjunction with his brothers, he took over the Wyroo Station, of 500 square miles on the lower Diamantina. This they stocked with 800 head of cattle. On disposing of the property to Walter Douglas, they organised an exploring party, and, proceeding westward crossed the Herbert and Hamilton Rivers, penetrating as far as Lake Phillipi, which they discovered. Here they took up to 2000 square miles of territory, which they sold to advantage to Messrs. Parker, Wolsley, and Brown. Going further west, they took up 2500 square miles of country on then an unknown river, which they called Sylvester, and named the station Sandringham.
The subject of this sketch here detached himself from the party to proceed to Blackall, the nearest Lands Office, a distance of 700 miles over then an almost unexplored tract, in order to make the necessary application for the above squatting area. After securing the country he retraced his steps as far as the confluence of the Barcoo and Thompson Rivers, where they form Cooper's creek. Here by arrangement the brothers were to meet, but through unavoidable causes the other members of the family were a month behind the appointed time. He was alone, and felt in sore trouble as to the safety of his brothers, as the natives were at that time waging war against the whites, and also the danger they ran of dying of thirst, from the scarcity of water. The entire party started for their native district. Travelling up the Kiatra Creek then across to the Bulloo, crossing it at Thergamuda, then on to the Wilson, Paroo and Warregoo Rivers - The latter they followed down to the Darling, then along the Darling to Louth, across the back blocks, through Cobar on to the Lachlan at Condobolin, over the Mana Mountain on to Lake Corvel, then up the Bland to the Murrumbidgee Falls on to Wagga Wagga and finally arrived at their native district through Yass.
