Notes: Copied from CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF NSW 1888 by Barbara Adams MARTIN BYRNE one of the oldest pastoralists and hotelkeepers in the neighbourhood, was born in Carlow in the year 1815 and educated in Dublin. In 1839 he landed in Sydney and immediately became a resident of Gundaroo at a time when there was only one house-- That of Mr. Gray, the storekeeper- on the site of the present thriving town of Queanbeyan In the same year the Government sale of the present town lots was held in Sydney, so Mr. Bryne actually witnessed the foundation of the settlement. For the first eight years of our subject's career he followed pastoral occupations with his Uncle at Gundaroo At the end of this period he opened business in the Traveller's Home, Gundaroo and four years later sold out and took the Royal Hotel Queanbeyan, which he kept for thirteen years. In 1864 he retired altogether from business. After living on his station at Woden for about five years, during which he suffered severe domestic bereavements, he returned to Queanbeyan where he has since resided. Mr. Bryne has erected several important buildings. which have considerably altered and improved the aspect of the town. In 1883 he built the large steam flour mills at present carried on by his son, and elsewhere described in this work In 1866 he was appointed to the commission of the peace and was one of the most active workers in the founding of the local hospital In many other ways Mr. Byrne has done a great deal to advance the town and district MR JAMES BYRNE BYRNE STEAM FLOUR MILLS, built in 1883 is carried on by Messrs. Martin Bryne and Son, of whom Mr. James Bryne is the managing partner. The plant used is as complete in scope and as modern in design as any in the colony, and was constructed at a cost of three thousand five hundred pounds by Mr. William Crispin, of Sydney to the order of Mr. M. Byrne, who built the mill. The capabilities of the establishment are forty bags of flour per day, requiring the assistance of only two men. Three pairs of elevators are used in the building.
