Third Generation

5. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick (Frances Barton2, William1) was born in 1857 in Berrima, NSW,12 died on March 13, 1938 in Skeleton Creek, Glen Innes, NSW13 at age 81, and was buried in Glen Innes, NSW.

Elizabeth married David Joseph Bell, son of Joseph Bell and Unknown, on September 12, 1876 in St. Matthias' Church of England, Bombala, NSW.90 David was born in 1811 in Dumfries, Scotland, died on February 28, 1886 in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW91 at age 75, and was buried in "Spring Flat" near Nimmitabel, NSW.

Marriage Notes: Elizabeth's surname is spelt Fitzpartrick on the marriage index.

Notes: David Bell, was born in Dumfries but establishing the family to which he belonged has to date not been proven as there were numerous Bell families in the vicinity of Applegarth. On his death certificate his father was named as Joseph Bell but no Joseph has been found who had a son called David within a probable time frame.

The family first settled at Mulgoa where David was employed as an Overseer on a property known as Shancomore. (Source: Mary's baptism certificate.)

From, "Wells Geographical Gazeteer of Australia" Shancomore was situated in the Parish of Bringelly, county of Cumberland NSW at the junction of Bringelly Creek with the Nepean or Cowpasture River.

By 1839 they were on the Monaro. According to Claire Schofield in her book "Bombala, Hub of Southern Monaro," David Bell, in 1839 was Superintendant of "Gunningrah" for John Terry Hughes, a merchant and brewer of Elizabeth Street, Sydney. This was correct as their fourth child was born at "Gunningrah" in 1838. However a correction must be made at this point as Claire stated that David Bell came free on the "Lusitania" and was an upholsterer in George Street, Sydney in 1828 \endash this is incorrect as in 1828 our David Bell was still living in Scotland. "Gunningrah" was 25 square miles of open forest country on granite and whinstone. Hughes did not live on the station which supported nineteen residents. Buildings were six slab huts, one woolshed and one set of stockyards. Sheep numbered 4051, cattle 1244 and horses 25. Twenty acres had been cultivated and sown to wheat." (Ref. Commissioners of Crown Lands Itineraries: Lambie, Monaro1839-45- Archives Office of NSW) . When Elizabeth was baptized David was shown as a Settler on the McLaughlin River, Maneroo. Spring Flat was on the McLaughlan so it appears the family had already moved to the area where David was to eventually apply for a land grant. The family's abode as Spring Flat first appears on Robert's baptism details in 1844. David's occupation, Grazier.

1848 (Agnes' Baptism) he was shown as a Settler, Spring Flat. In "Bombala, Hub of Southern Monaro" David was listed as Licencee and Superintendant of Spring Flat. A lease application had been made by David Bell for 10 240 acres on the McLauchlan River. ( Ref. "Squatting on Crown Lands in NSW" by J.F. Campbell

On the 27 April 1854 David was given the land known as "Spring Flat" in the Maneroo District, County of Wellesley. (Ref. Letter from the Society of Australian Genealogists, Sydney 1975.)

In 1849 David Bell's name appeared on a list of 172 squatters whose lands had been surveyed and then published in the Government Gazette. With his total of 10 240 acres it would appear he made a good choice of grazing land. He made certain his run was secure when he paid 160 pounds for 160 acres around his house on the 9 August 1854 following an application dated 18 April 1854 for the land now legally available to him.

1851 10th March David applied to purchase 160 acres at Spring Flat in the district of Maneroo. He was to pay 160 pounds by 26 April 1854. Ref. Return of Applications to Purchase Portions of Runs of Crown Lands beyond the settled district.

1865 Spring Flat Station 7200 acres, occupant David Bell, capacity 350 cattle; charges 26 pounds, 8 shillings and 2 pence. Ref. Bailliere's NSW Gazeteer and Road Guide Melbourne 1866

David and Annie remained at Spring Flat where they reared a family of nine children.

Annie died on the 12 January 1873 at "Spring Flat" aged 60. She was buried on the property beside two of her sons. When David died in 1886, he too was buried there. This cemetery is now on private property but the headstones were transcribed for me some years ago.

I have sighted a Bible presented to Annie by David in 1859. The inscription read: "Spring Flat 5 July 1859 Presented to Annie Bell by her fondly attached husband David" This Bible was in the possession of Alice Godber of Orbost, daughter of Annie Bell and James Godber. It was my impression that Alice wished to have this Bible buried with her but whether this happened is not known.

Death Details - Annie Bell

Annie died as a result of heart disease, aged 60. No doctor was named as attending her. The informant was David Joseph Bell, her son, of Spring Flat. Burial took place on the 15 July at Spring Flat. The Minister was John Wilson, Presbyterian. Witnesses to her burial were Andrew Agnew McKeachie and Alexander McKeachie. (Source: Death Certificate) Of David and Annie's nine children, the following were baptised outside Maneroo. Mary 11 April 1837 Parish of St Andrew's Church, Sydney by John McGarvie Robert, 3 April 1844 Parish of St Matthew's, County of Cumberland by Wm. Hamilton Margaret 10 April 1850 Parish of Portland Head, County of Cook by Geo. Macfie

Following the death of Annie, David married Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, a woman much younger than himself.

Marriage Details 2nd Marriage:

David and Elizabeth were married on the 12 September 1876 at St Matthia's C.of E. Bombala. David was listed as a Grazier residing at Spring Flat. The only details for Elizabeth were her usual place of residence, Spring Flat and that permission was given by her father, Michael Fitzpatrick, for the marriage to take place. (Elizabeth being under 21) Witnesses were J.H. and Eleanor Morgan.

1878-79 Official Post Office Directory \endash Nimmitybelle Bell, David Farmer Spring Flat They had one son, Robert Bell, who was only five when his father died. Robert was virtually raised by his half-brother David Joseph Bell and family. When David died, Elizabeth married Edward Taylor at Kameruka NSW. They had a family of six. Death Details \endash Elizabeth Taylor nee Fitzpatrick:

Elizabeth Taylor died on the 13 March 1938, aged 80, at Skeleton Creek near Glen Innes. Cause of death was Malignant Cachexia, Carcinoma of Caecum, Chronic Bronchitis. Her parents were Michael Fitzpatrick, a Labourer and Fanny Barton. She was buried in the C.of E. portion of the Glen Innes Cemetery on the 14 March. Children living: Robert 56 \endash 1st Marriage 2nd Marriage - Martha 51; Amos 47; Mary 44; Henry 42; John C.J. 39; 1 female deceased \endash (Source: Death Certificate)

It would appear that David had been well educated. He wrote with a fine hand as can be witnessed, by his signature, when he signed his will despite his seventy years. He left an estate valued at 12 400 pounds.

His will gives the impression, that he became a very unhappy and bitter man. The wording in the following section, certainly conveys that impression to me.

"…… in the first place to pay my wife, during her life and while she shall continue my widow, twenty pounds per annum, payable quarterly from my death and to pay each of my daughters now living and my grand-daughter Annie Rolls, the daughter of my daughter Agnes, now deceased, the sum of five hundred pounds each…."

Agnes was still alive at this time so it would appear she had been disowned by her father. The other two major beneficiaries were his surviving son, David Joseph Bell and his five year old son, Robert.

Death Details - David Bell:

David, a Grazier, aged 76 died from natural causes at Spring Flat, near Bombala on the 8 February 1866. He was seen by Dr Eddie the day prior to his death. The informant was Thomas Barber, son-in-law of Bombala. Burial took place at Spring Flat on the 10 February. Witnesses to his burial were \endash John McKeachie and David Binnie. The Minister was W. Gardner, Presbyterian. His father, according to his death certificate, was Joseph Bell. (Source: Death Certificate)

We learn, from his will that David Bell had two properties in Bombala. Land and premises which were occupied by Dr Robert Eddie and a Chemist shop and dwelling occupied by N.E. Earl.

From information passed to me by the late Sheila Barber, then President of the Bombala Historical Society, David at the time of his second marriage, gave his father as Robert Bell and his own Christian name as Hugh \endash these facts were not on the transcript of the marriage certificate obtained by me.

The following information was given to me by Alice Godber who in turn was told these facts by her mother, but to date they have not been proven. However, I must hasten to add that Alice had a wonderful memory and was of great assistance to me when I first became interested in family history several years ago. To date I have been able to prove that much of that early information was accurate.

David was a student at Edinburgh College. When they first arrived in NSW they took up country in the Cow Pastures \endash David was an Overseer on their arrival but did not own land in the Cow Pastures. David had convicts working for him and once a year he took a trip to Sydney for supplies. On one trip he took a convict with him and while in Sydney, the convict got drunk. He was given 32 strokes and his back was cut and bleeding. David got a salve and patched him up for the return journey.

David lost several thousand pounds in a bank which collapsed. He had been warned that the bank was on the verge of collapse but chose not to heed the warning.

He was known as a man "whose word was law."

When Annie died he apparently began drinking heavily. He was supposed to have asked for one girl's hand in marriage but her mother stepped in and said, "No. Why Bell, you have two daughters older than her." His second wife, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick was said to have been sold to him for 60 sovereigns.
